We rush to grow up into adulthood and then find we missed our childhood, why rush?

@CaroleKay I guess this is a thorny issue for both of us, for the record, I like artists, real artists. I do not like fraudulent, do nothings who pretend to be artists but just make real artists look bad. I've been a landlord, I've been a tenant - good on both counts. Take from it what you will.

Surfpirate replies on Feb 1, 2019:
@AprilFlowers okay, you rent to people that are always behind on the rent and leave a pile of trash behind when you finally have to evict them, clean up the mess and pay the legal bills. I'm a master builder, that involves creativity with a very large and expensive canvas, usually greater than $50M, so I take my profession and my work seriously. My issue is with people who call themselves 'Artists' when in actual fact they are not artistic but people who have no skill or trade or work ethic and just drift along under the guise of being 'artistic'. If you are down on your luck then work through it and if you are a bum then don't drag down artists by calling yourself one.
hahahahaha

@CaroleKay I also wouldn't classify you as a typical artist in so far as you actually have an artistic trade in comparison to the 'always late with the rent, never have two cents to rub together, living for my art' sort of artist I was envisioning. My own work is artistic but also practical and that's where I notice the difference between functional artist and artists who use the term because they really don't do much of anything.
hahahahaha

That is bordering on discrimitary, defamatory. To tell kids to avoid atheists is disgusting. Someone should sue them.

Canada and Quebec? ;) Seriously, my wife has a completely different understanding of Canadian/Canadien history than what I was taught. Apparently, after the French won the battle at the Plains of Abraham they took pity on the Black Dog English and allowed them to stay which was a mistake in hindsight.
Therein lies wisdom. ;)

On a per capita basis we are just as likely to have something bad happen as Americans are. We're just nicer. It's always been like that. They fought a war of independence. We politely asked for permission. It's been that way ever since.

Personally, I think we just sat back and let winter work it's magic on the British. Eventually they got tired of the frostbite and went home, much like Napoleon and the Russians. ;)

Surfpirate replies on Jan 28, 2019:
@DonaldHRoberts Canada is a native word, for village, so maybe First Nations tribes are the true Canadians? ;) My people sailed over in 1753 which makes my family roots pretty deep but my wife's roots go back to the original Seigneuries of New France in the 1600's. Old Canadian families are out there, you just have to look for them a little because we are after all a nation of immigrants. Nothing annoys me more than a British Immigrant that feels they aren't emigrating to Canada but touring the colonies. lol Those pompous twats are a surefire target for mockery and derision. :D

Perhaps you have the basis for a separate post here? I'm a 9th generation Canadian, I've owned several companies over the years and made countless payrolls with the accompanying taxation. I have also been told by more recently arrived Canadians that there is no such thing as a Canadian Canadian, that ALL Canadians must be hyphenated Canadians. Chinese Canadian, Italian Canadian, Russian Canadian, Pakistani Canadian etc. etc. BUT there are a few of us still out there that don't trace our roots to any place else but Canada. I'm one of those. :) I think it is good that Canada is a young country, perhaps we won't make some of the stupid mistakes that the older countries seem to like repeating, ad nauseum.

Surfpirate replies on Jan 27, 2019:
@Davekp Pretty much, take the first exit off the 401 east of Kingston and it will take you right to the ferry dock. Unlike the ferry to the neighbouring island, ours is paid for with our local taxes and not by the province, there is a small fee of $6 for visitors so it keeps down the traffic on the ferry and a 15 minute wait is unusual. The provincial ferry is free so there can be long delays during the tourist season, sometimes several hours.

It pisses me off when some of the island residents complain that these guys get paid too much and it is such a cushy job. It is mindless work that has to be performed safely, all the while dealing with the elements and the public who are often a big part of the problem. I notice that none of the complainers want to step up and do the work themselves, like being called out of a warm bed when the ferry breaks down or someone doesn't show up for their shift.

Ontario is seeing a backlash against the Liberals with the election of Doug Ford and his Tories. I think we may see even more Tories federally in the next election, particularly in Ontario.
