I never voted conservative and never would. After the Filmon Friday’s in Manitoba in the 90’s and how they treated the nurses. It caused so many many of us to head south. I’ve always voted the Liberal party with a sprinkling of NDP.

There are two ferries to the island, this is the smaller one (3 cars or two pickup trucks in capacity) and a bigger one that takes 15 vehicles at a time. Rarely do both ferries go out at the same time but it has happened. If the big ferry goes down because of the weather then it can be a long wait to get on or off the island with only 3 vehicles per ferry trip, so people will leave their cars on the mainland and walk on the ferry.

Fracking is pulling natural gas out of the ground, the oil is harder to get and more limited. @FrayedBear Stepdad actually, the fucker drove the SUV off the road at highway speeds 100kph, down through the ditch, over the rock outcrop, through the air and then nose dived into more rocks; turtled the SUV, medvac helicopter to the hospital and the prick survived - tough as nails. The laugh was he wanted my mom to drive his old piece of shit car as a replacement and pocket the insurance money, so while he was laid up in the hospital she went out and bought a brand new Volvo X60. lol

I have experienced -58 and once I finally got my car door open it wouldn't close so I slammed it hard and broke the hinge. Half way to work the door started to fall off the car. Metal gets brittle at lower temps but it was an older Audi.

I'm a regular failure with soaked (quick uncovered boil, then hour-long covered sitting) dried beans. Always flavorless; canned beans, to my embarrassment, always taste better. I'll try overnight soaking next.
Surfpirate replies on Jan 20, 2019:
Overnight soaking and rinsing, slow cooking and never letting the beans break the surface, plus only adding the salt towards the end are the keys to success when it comes to making beans from dry. I also find that finishing off in the oven takes the guesswork out finishing off the excess liquid.

@Redheadedgammy That's the approach my wife takes with those sorts of people, cast into the outer darkness, never to return. It is a final sentence, no chance of parole - something I love about her. I tend to be more sympathetic of the psychic vampires of the world, they appear as leaky vessels to me, a bucket full of holes that is constantly trying to fill itself up by sucking the life force out of others, it's a bit tragic. That doesn't stop me from giving them a blast of distaste when concealment proves inadequate.

@Redheadedgammy Ah yes, the people that love to suck the life out of others, aren't they fun? I've tried various methods to deal with those sorts of people but in the end I have it is best to avoid them or make it unpalatable for them to try and feed off you if avoidance doesn't work. My ideal evening would be with a few people, 4 to 6 works well, and some interesting conversation over a good meal and a couple of beverages, maybe some light jazz in the background, in comfortable surroundings. However, there are times when I feel the need to test my metal and throw myself into the melee and for that I 'put on my armour' because I know I am going to need it. I don't seek out the crowd normally but there are times when I feel the need to contribute to more than a select group, to give back. I recently ran for election in my local government and I am somewhat relieved that I lost by 9 votes. I also volunteer because I think it is part of our social responsibility and that often brings me into contact with large groups. Throw in the fact that I have owned several companies and have lead large construction projects and you have an empathic individual who has learned to shield himself from the thoughts and feelings of others. I made a choice early on between leading or hiding in the back of the crowd, leading seemed more acceptable to me because I enjoy the solitude that goes with being a leader, even if it does put me in contact with conflicting groups of people who I must shield myself from in order to cope with them. Hiding in the back never worked for me as you are always pointed out eventually and then you have no defense but to flee the madding crowd.

Surfpirate replies on Jan 20, 2019:
From my own experience I know this to be true and I have grown very proficient at building that shielding around me so that the overwhelming pressure of others emotions does not come flooding in and drown me. I am perceived to be a very public and social figure, I often speak to large groups of people and I used to sing tenor in front of large groups. People feel I am very calm and sociable but they have no idea the effort I put into those shields and the dread I have that they will collapse under the strain. Be like a duck, calm on the surface but paddling like mad underneath.
Okay then! I am officially losing faith in our world. [msn.com]

The Devil's Brigade is a pretty good movie for an old one and gives some insights into the differences between Canadian and US cultures.
