@mordant It's a very common American perspective that they aren't safe without a handgun nearby. I went over this many times with contractors I brought into Bermuda to work for me over the years. When nobody else has a handgun you don't need one either and there were no guns in Bermuda back then, except for the army and a special flying team of police officers, otherwise the cops wore Bermuda shorts, a badge and a bobby hat, not even a billy stick.

@mordant In Canada your firearms must always be kept in a locked safe, with trigger locks, unloaded, when not in use. Welcome to Canada and sensible gun laws. You can't even buy a shotgun or hunting rifle without first having passed a comprehensive firearms safety course, handguns are even more restricted because you obviously aren't using them for hunting or protecting your property from varmints.

I heard about that, some young guy blew up in his car and then a second explosion but I haven't heard anything about the motive. There was the same sort of insanity in Toronto with that young guy driving down Yonge St. on the sidewalk, mowing down pedestrians.
At least these are major news events because of there rarity but we really don't need to import more of this sort of thing from the nation that has more mass shootings than any other. If people want to come to Canada and become citizens then they can leave their guns at home and their attitudes towards gun violence as well.

@mordant As someone who has lived in several other countries for extended periods of time, here's my advice to you, give Canada a trial period of 6 months. You can work while taking an extended vacation in Canada, just so long as you are working remotely and getting paid in the US but I believe 6 months is the cut off period. You may find that the culture and the climate are not to your liking but it is better to find out on a trial basis than to up and move to a new country with only vague notions of what it is really like to live here. I've seen far too many expats move to a foreign country after a two week vacation there, they buy a house after selling off everything back home, then within a year or two they can't stand the new country and take a huge loss to return to their home country. Also you should try getting professional advice instead of winging it and taking the advice of people who have lived in Canada for a while and then moved back to the US. Why did they move back if it was so wonderful? Did they actually integrate into Canadian society or were they ugly Americans that are so loathed by Canucks?

@Geektheist After the Scouting Movement fell into decline in the 80's the administration became much more lenient about the requirement for religious belief and down graded it to a belief in a higher power. They let me in as a Scout Leader in the 90's because I acknowledge the possibility of a universal life force, I figured it was close enough and so did they but they also gave me the worst area in the district. In a year I had turned it around and in two years it was the largest and most active troop in the district, maybe because there was just a whole lot of outdoor activity and none of that praying in a church basement. ;)
