Someone was asking about patios.

Lots of people talk about doing something similar by themselves, it's just talk though, you actually did it. Kudos to you, it looks very nice.
You get to a age or point where you just don't seem to fit in with people you've known a long time ...
Surfpirate comments on Jun 22, 2018:
When you find those rare diamonds, you treasure them and it makes wading through all the chaff and dross worth it. There are times when it gets slim, especially as we get older and many people cave into the false security of an imaginary friend or just stop reaching out to the world, cocooning instead. The choice becomes between staying awake and alive or going back to sleep and the peaceful dreams that are the delusions of religion. Either you rage against it or you succumb to it, we all have choices to make.
I am looking for some suggestions on making a small water fountain where I don't need to pump water ...
Surfpirate comments on Jun 22, 2018:
If you want it to run intermittently then you could use a reservoir with a bell siphon that is slowly filled with a small pump that runs continuously but slowly, when the reservoir is full the bell siphon is activated and the water is dropped fairly quickly until the siphon kicks off and the reservoir begins to fill again until it is full, then repeat. If you want a fountain that jets water upwards rather than dropping it downwards then a pump on a time is your best solution and the most affordable. I'm will be installing two waterfalls for our new house, one inside and one outside, the inside one will be run on a three way switch so people can pass through the water curtain and the outside waterfall will run on a timer both will be built out of copper sheathing.
What would you think if a religious person said they did not believe in magic ?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 22, 2018:
To believe in Religion is to believe in Magic, the Bible is their magic book and it is filled with stories of magical beings doing magical things. Her statement is a contradiction.

Human beings are the most dangerous animal on the planet, both sexes. Something I taught my Scouts when I was a Scout Leader was to rely upon the buddy system, not a guarantee of safety but your odds of survival and enjoying a safe hike go way up. If you twist an ankle or get sick or have an accident or have a run in with a bad person, you have an option B. Always have an Option B.

Quick poll how does everyone feel about GMOs?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 21, 2018:
Maybe it's because I studied genetics and microbiology for 3 years that I don't trust GMO's and I am NOT saying that there is anything dangerous about GMO's just that I don't trust them because I don't trust the Agribusiness players behind almost all of the GMO foods. The FDA used to be a check against abuses by industry but that hasn't been the case for at least a couple of decades now, most of the top people have direct ties to the big Agribusiness players so we really don't know what genes are being manipulated and what the knock on effects may be. I grow with heirloom seeds even though many of the heritage seed banks have been bought up by the same corporations that are producing the GMO's, many of the seeds I plant I trade for and I replant from previous year's harvests as well. We are what we eat and until I can be sure I know what I am putting in my mouth I will minimize my intake of GMO's, the same goes for the meat we eat, I shop locally for the most part and I am pretty confident about the amount of steroids, growth hormones and antibiotics that are being used but I am fortunate and live in a rural area.

What books should all atheists read?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 21, 2018:
The road to Atheism is paved with well read Bibles, Korans and other Holy books. If these books don't make you see the inanity of religion then you are probably too stupid to make it as an Atheist. It's an acid test for Atheism.

There have got to be at least a million Americans living illegally in Mexico, from tourists who have overstayed their visas to people who have been living down there for years without proper documentation. What happens if the Mexican government sinks to the same low, immoral state as this Trump government? Round all those Americans up and stick them in cages? Send them back in cattle cars without anything but the clothes on their back and let Trump sort it out? As usual, this POS POTUS has not thought things through, just went off on a whim that he thought would make him look like a big man instead of the boy in short pants that he is.

Could be worse, could be one of those huge Palmetto Bugs we had in South America. My wife wanted to check out of our hotel in the middle of the night because she got up for a glass of water and saw a particularly big one, I said no way, wait until morning, then there was gunfire in the park across from the hotel and I said absolutely not moving until the sun comes up and that settled it. If you have never been to Cali, Colombia then you should count yourself lucky.

Surfpirate comments on Jun 18, 2018:
I have what one person called a 'high burn rate' in my life, basically I burn the candle at both ends and in the middle too. So I outgrew all of my friends from high school and university a long time ago; tried hooking up with a few of them a few decades ago and it was a disaster. You do the whole how are things going? Q&A and while my life had changed several times theirs was just the same as when I last saw them, after 10 minutes you could hear the crickets chirping. Most of my relationships with people were task based because as the boss you have to have a certain level of isolation in order to be objective but it also means you interact with a lot of people every day. Since I retired 9 years ago that social interaction is gone but I did pick up a lot of new friends in our travels, the only problem is that they are scattered all over the world so we stay in touch via social media. Locally, we have met few people that are interesting enough to make us want to become close friends with them, once again, crickets. You just have to be comfortable in your own skin as a lot of people are stuck in a rut and aren't going to let new people into their lives.

Surfpirate comments on Jun 17, 2018:
1) My Freedom 2) My Wife 3) My Mom 4) My Kids 5) Myself I wouldn't be able to love anyone or anything if I wasn't free within myself so that's number One. My wife is my best friend so that's what makes number One important, so that's 2. My mom because I wouldn't be here without her or be who I am in large part because she's the one who put up with all my bullshit in the early years and wonder against wonders didn't smother me with a pillow. Except for the nurturing instinct that made her love regardless I'd guess she would be number One but I think she'd be okay with number 3.

What a douchebag, put him in an SS uniform and he would feel right at home. He is a perfect example of what is not superior about the Jewish religious group because they most certainly not a race unless they want to include themselves in the human race., The Jewish claim to racial purity is negated by the constant raping of their culture by every christian and muslim army that ever passed through the lands they were exiled to after losing their tiny little piece of dirt in the middle east.

Surfpirate comments on Jun 16, 2018:
You Sir are what is called a Good Man and there are damn few of us left so my hat is off to you for doing what is right and decent and the ultimate symbol of true love. As an atheist we realize that death is the ultimate closing of the book on our lives so I expect your wife would be frightened as you were no doubt yourself. No rosy fairy tales of heaven, just the darkness and the big dirt nap. So as an atheist you risked far more than a theist who believes they would be off to heaven and a choir of harpsichordists. I am very glad to hear that it worked out for you and wish that you and you wife have a swift recovery and many more happy years together. God Speed! ;) (just kidding but you know what I mean)

Surfpirate comments on Jun 16, 2018:
I think that people find it a bit disjointed because it keeps switching back and forth between the android outlook and the human outlook which at first glance appear to be the same but really aren't so it can be a bit confusing. I loved the original movie back in the 70's with Yule Brenner as the gun fighter, basically reprising his roll from The Magnificent Seven.

Surfpirate comments on Jun 16, 2018:
Oh ow I hate to do exercise that doesn't produce actual work being accomplished. A girlfriend once talked me into going to her gym which she religiously attended 5 times a week. An hour of that was enough for me and when the girl at the desk asked me if I would like to sign up for for the 3 month special for $299 I told her that I get paid $200/hr to do the same sort of thing on the job, thanks but no thanks. Now I am older and retired I am actually considering joining a gym but still can't pull the trigger.
A really fat happy ground hog has found my tomato plants. Anyone know of any repellents that work?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 16, 2018:
I've planted 600 bulbs of garlic as a perimeter around my garden and 2 dozen lavender plants in the middle as deterrents to garden pests, plus a 6 foot high fence. Last evening my wife called me to come have a look at what was going on in the garden. Standing in the middle of the carrot patch was a deer eating away happily, I chased it off and it easily cleared the fence from a standing position, this morning 3 more were back and I went out to ask them to leave the area, they reluctantly edged away from me when I got within 20 ft., I think the only thing that will work is to get a dog. Our last dog was an accomplished groundhog killer, she loved to bring back her presents to me, usually without a head.

Certainty in a belief seems to me a trait of a theist.
Surfpirate comments on Jun 15, 2018:
I would say that an Atheist is 99% sure that there is no god and 1% open to the possibility that there is one if someone would just provide hard evidence, However, since the fundamentalists are 1,000% certain in their delusion it is impractical to allow for even that 1% of doubt because the missionary zeal immediately comes out. Like any lunatic they want you to share their delusion and will stop at nothing to do it so you just can't allow them a foot in the door. If you don't believe it then the next time the Jehovahs Witnesses or the Mormons drop by and knock on your door, let them in and put on a pot of coffee so you can have a nice long chat, they'll be back, guaranteed.

You can get a sealer paint that is used for sealing gutters but it is pretty expensive, cheap just to line each drawer with a clear garbage bag and punch a hole in each corner to let the water continue down to the next level. A decent alkyd paint would give enough protection for a season or two, marine paint would last even longer. Check the mistints shelf at the building supply store and see if you can score a deal, the dresser drawers you should be able to pick up at the Habitat for Humanity Store or one of the charity stores.
What's the weirdest thing that our EX ever said to you after you were divorced?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 15, 2018:
The last words I heard from my Ex were at the courthouse where she was after me for even more money, after taking the kids out of the country, changing their surnames to her new husband's surname and denying me any contact with the children. She walked up to me in the hallway in front of the courtroom where I was talking to my lawyer, my wife and my mother and yelled **'Why did you have to fuck me like a whore?'** spun around on her heel and walked off in a huff. I was gob smacked but my wife wasn't and she quickly retorted** 'You need to get professional help'. **

My kids ask me some questions that the answer is obvious so they never know how I am going to ...
Surfpirate comments on Jun 14, 2018:
I had a boss when I was quite young and green who played a game with all of the junior managers, it went like this. If you walked into his office and said you wanted to ask him a question he would stop you right there and ask you if you had a dollar bill (this was a while ago when a dollar would actually buy you something). You would of course say yes and then he would ask to see it, so you'd pull a dollar out of your pocket and he would say something along the lines of 'Yes, that's a dollar, just set it on my desk in front of me'. Then he would lay out the rules: If your question was not very bright and if you could have come up with the answer by using your head for more than a hat rack - he kept your dollar but would answer your question. If your question was a good question but you had asked him this question before and had just been too lazy to bother to remember the answer he had already given you - he kept the dollar and reminded you of his previous answer. If your question was a good question and his superior experience and knowledge were now called into play, experience and knowledge that he had paid dearly for over the course of his career - the he would give you the answer and you kept your dollar. Knowledge is not free, it is hard earned and should be valued as such.

How close are you to your Ex?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 14, 2018:
I was friends with a couple who after more than a decade decided that they had simply grown apart after marrying quite young. They liked each other but they didn't want to be married to each other any more so they got a fair divorce and with the money they saved by not having to hire lawyers they invited everyone from their wedding reception to their divorce party. It was a blast and they both went on to marry other people but still remained friends. It would really depend upon the people involved. As for me, I find that I am too close to my Ex because she is still on the same planet and the possibility that I might breathe in a lungful of air that she had in her lungs is disturbing to me.

Nuclear power in the current US electrical infrastructure
Surfpirate comments on Jun 14, 2018:
Nuclear is not a carbon neutral energy source when looked at as a whole process. Plenty of green house gases get pumped into the atmosphere through the process of building the plant, sourcing and mining the uranium, processing the uranium into usable fuel rods and most importantly in the production of the heavy water which is necessary for the reactor. The carbon footprint is much great than that of renewable energy sources which do not require fuel to generate electric power. Renewables have a carbon footprint but it is a one time item, who can say just how high the cost will be to safely store and maintain all those spent fuel rods?
Do you believe in ex lovers getting back together ?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 13, 2018:
Do people really change? Somehow I doubt it, we evolve but our core personality is there by the time we reach early adulthood most of what we are is fixed. So whatever didn't work before still won't work if we give it a second chance. Sometimes we just want the familiar even though we know it isn't good for us.

I had always assumed that there was some Northern Cree in the bloodline because of the strong native features in my family; jet black, straight hair, dark eyes, dark skin and there walk like a bear gait that is typically associated with native peoples. Turns out it's not so, not a drop of native DNA in me. Interesting to check these things out and I still see myself as a full blood Canadian Canadian after 9 generations here. In a nation of immigrants everyone identifies as a type of Canadian - French Canadian, Italian Canadian, German Canadian, Indian Canadian, Chinese Canadian etc. etc. but I have always identified as a Canadian Canadian, something that other Canadians don't always understand because of their own immigrant backgrounds.
So, my wife and I have six sons.

Appropriate Boobage? Where? Is there such a thing as too much? I thought it was all about the nipples, show as much boob as you like but so long as there is no nipple then no problem. Humans are weird little mammals. BTW - it is perfectly legal for men and women to walk around topless in my Province of Ontario, Canada.
Hoping this is the ultimate outcome.

I hope he goes too far and instead of just blindly holding him back she whacks him hard with the sword of justice.
Swords of angels.

It's tough being a Northern Gardener, you never know when that last frost is going to hit and wipe out all the hard prep work you put into a garden each year. I started inside in March just to get ready for planting from seed, it'll come.
Thought I would share this, if I had a place to put one I would build it.

I just read that in the USA, Water became the most consumed bottled product in 2017.

While watering the garden yesterday I had a drink out of the hose which is from my well, still alive this morning. ;) This is what Canadians drink, you just drive right up and get some Tims, too bad they don't serve beer :D.

A friend of mine who used to sit on the RCMP public complaints committee said she could always tell when the Mounties had beat the crap out of someone for being belligerent to them because it always read the same way in the report - A Scuffle Ensued. Better a punch to the head than a bullet but that's Canada for you, alcohol was usually a factor.
Interesting.

The 2 page report from 2007 does not cite physical addiction to marijuana but psychological issues related to giving up a habit. This is nothing at all like physical withdrawal symptoms from a chemical dependency although the wording in the report tries to blur the lines on this. I wonder which of the big corporations paid to have this study done. Tobacco? Alcohol? Pharma? All stand to lose from the decriminalization of marijuana.

I just heard his 'Apology' from his interview on FoxNews, he seems to apologize to his boss Trump for screwing up his ad hominem attack on the Canadian Prime Minister but he never actually says the words I apologize Prime Minister Trudeau or even that he is sorry except for the fact that it made him look like the unprofessional buffoon that he is. Mostly he just talks about his mission to do a hatchet job on Canada in order to set the tone for Trump's meeting with North Korea. What a pathetic joke for a diplomat.
Did you see the ridiculous propaganda video that the white house produced for Kim?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 12, 2018:
My wife showed it to me, her degree is in political science and she could not believe how condescending and blatantly threatening it was. I doubt that North Korea will ever truly give up its nukes but it will go through the motions for a while at least.
