How would you handle a situation if you just met someone socially and they said something you found ...
Surfpirate comments on Jun 2, 2018:
I have a pretty high threshold for rudeness and I am a pretty good judge of character in order to know where someone is coming from. If they are being a total asshole then I will gently ease them away from that behavior if possible and if not then Katey bar the door because they are getting both barrels. I haven't punched anyone in the face in absolute ages so I must be getting better with experience. :)
Are we heading into a mure puritanical time?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 2, 2018:
I find that people have become much more willing to self police each other when it comes to social norms and political correctness. This may be part of the reason why there is a backlash against political correctness as evidences by the Trumpsters constant outburst. The Puritans were well known for their zeal at outing each other for the most trivial offenses against the moral code they espoused.

The cucumbers have taken over the side of one raised garden and I have 7 little cucumbers so far.
Surfpirate comments on Jun 2, 2018:
I like to plant them on the edges of my garden and then spill the vines outside of the garden where they can get lots of sun and act as a perimeter defense against the deer that love to raid my garden. The deer don't like the prickly vines and tend to shy away, unless they smell beets, nothing keeps them from my beets except a chicken wire caging over top of the beets. :)

Anyone ever stay in a marriage because of kids? Is it worth giving up your own happiness?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 2, 2018:
I lost my kids in a divorce from a highly dysfunctional marriage, she took the kids to a different country, changed their names and I didn't see them again for 25 years, the cheque still goes out every month, the kids seem happy enough and nobody had to die. It probably would have been me and yes I think the kids suffered but not as much as if I had stayed in that marriage. If you can't make it work and you have tried everything imaginable to make it work then get out for your own sake and for your kids.

Its Saturday night, whats everybody up to?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 2, 2018:
Saturday Night is still 12 hours away for me but probably I will make a meal of Boullabaise for my wife and I, then we will listen to Randy Bachman's Vinyltap on the radio for a bit and probably watch an episode of Sons of Anarchy which we just discovered at our local library on DVD. In the meantime I have a trailer load of compost to shovel by hand onto the new flower beds, a little over a metric ton worth of compost from the local recycling plant, so I will probably be asleep before midnight after that little workout. Always nice to see a Kiwi on this site, a nice change from the usual Yanks, have a great Saturday night.

Most of my friends are interesting people who are scattered all over the world, people I have made a connection with over the years during our travels but most of the people who live physically close to me on the island are not very interesting at all. I stay in touch with my true friends via social media for the most part and meet up with them in person when we can find a way to make that happen. This group has more interesting people on it than I have found in the 3 years I have spent living on this island of 1,500 people and the surrounding area which adds another 150,000 people. Interesting people are like diamonds, precious and rare.

Did you know that Joseph Stalin killed more people than Adolf Hitler?
Surfpirate comments on Jun 1, 2018:
Stalin had a lot longer run to stack up his body count. Given the same amount of time I would think Hitler would have been up to the task, definitely if he had been able to invaded North and South America, the losses on the Eastern Front nipped that in the bud.

Surfpirate comments on Jun 1, 2018:
I was thinking that a B&B might be something to do during the summer months while I was watering the flowers and the new grass seed this morning. I designed this new house as two seperate and self contained units so it would be a pretty straight forward matter for me to rent out the upstairs unit as a private hotel suite with a view out over the river and fresh flowers and veggies from the garden. How do you find it as a B&B operator?

Crazy Americans, taking their jobs! They should build a wall! LOL!
Surfpirate comments on Jun 1, 2018:
I always smile when Americans tell me how they will just move to my country if things get too bad in theirs. Why would I want people bringing that kind of shit into my country? It's bad enough that we accept far more refugees than they do on humanitarian grounds, most of them the result of American foreign wars for profit. Move to another state if you want a change of scenery, otherwise get in line and fill out the forms like everybody else in line in front of you did. Oh, and have a nice day, Eh.

Poor People Often Don’t Survive To Become Seniors Who Vote
Surfpirate comments on Jun 1, 2018:
In the current corporatocracy that we live in, productivity and efficiency are the sacred cows that must never be questioned or infringed upon. The poor are at the bottom of the production line, they fill those positions that are menial but essential but once those workers reach old age they become not only nonproductive but a drain on the system. In the interests of maintaining profitability it only makes sense to cut this dead weight on the system, especially the poor because they bring no money to the table for investment or consumption in this system. That the survivors are more conservative is simply an added bonus as it helps to perpetuate this heartless system and it reinforces the notion that we all must be profitable and productive units in order to justify our existence within the system. I know this is madness but this is an asylum planet so what could be more natural?
Conservative and Libertarian Athiests
Surfpirate comments on Jun 1, 2018:
As a young man I identified as a Libertarian although never as an Ayn Rand sort of Libertarian by the time I reached my 30's it became obvious to me that the Social Contract between business and society had been broken and this to me was always a fundamental tenet of Libertarianism so I morphed into what I like to call a Lefty Libertarian. If the wealthy and big corporations do not want to meet their obligations as members of this society and enjoy the benefits of the infrastructure, human capital, education, quality of life and productivity that comes from a free and open democracy then they will have to be charged in a fair and reasonable manner for these benefits. Libertarianism doesn't work when people want to have their cake and eat it too. All you get are a bunch of selfish assholes spouting political dogma about free enterprise and smaller government to justify not paying their fair share; either way you pay because the very foundation of Libertarianism is that there is no free lunch.

The Zionist forces in Israel have done a remarkable job of crushing resistance to their expansionist plans, covered up and suppressed reporting of their crimes against humanity and brainwashed much of the world to into believing that they are the victims and not the aggressors. The propaganda campaign has been so effective that most people instinctively turn away from any suggestion that Israel could be in the wrong and that the world continues to owe a debt to Jews around the world for the horror of the Holocaust which wipes clean and sanitizes any crimes against humanity committed by this vile Zionist regime.

Are most Canadians Atheists?
Surfpirate comments on May 31, 2018:
I lived in the Comox Valley on the north end of the island back in the 1990's and I'm a 9th generation Canadian so I can tell you with a fair degree of confidence that most Canadians are not Atheists although it does vary by region and it's a very big country with a lot of regions, 2nd largest country in the world after Russia actually. Surveys show that on average the percentage of non-religiously affiliated Canadians is about the same as for Americans, about 1 in 4. What we don't seem to have as many of is religious fundamentalists and those we do have are naturally - More Polite- than some of the nut job fundamentalists in the US of A. The overwhelming, no holds barred, nobody else even comes close Religion in Canada is of course - HOCKEY! Hockey Night in Canada marks the beginning of the Sabbath on Saturday night and services are held throughout the week when one includes away games. Vancouver Island is probably not representative of Canada as a whole, Vancouver Islanders have been talking about separating from British Columbia for ages and barely qualify as Canadians, a bit like Puerto Rico for you Americans, only more polite, unless it's the play offs. :)

What do yall think about what happens after death?
Surfpirate comments on May 31, 2018:
I am in agreement with the majority here that there is no evidence to prove that there is anything after death, this can be depressing for some people and a motivator for others once they realize they have a finite existence and should make the most of that brief time here. On the other hand, what I would like to believe happens after death is another matter entirely and it looks a bit like this. :)

Surfpirate comments on May 29, 2018:
I would say that the majority of children are an accident, often a happy accident but usually an accident nonetheless. Surfpirate comments on May 29, 2018:
I think that the government and the power elites realized after the upheaval of the 60's that mass education of the population was problematic and policy changed to discourage education that would lead to free thinking. Religion jumped on the bandwagon because this is right up their alley as they've been condemning free thinkers as heretics for centuries. Now we have people who are only smart when they have a smart phone in their hand because they no longer know how to think for themselves or why that might even be necessary.
I feel this is true for most people who finally open their eyes to reality.

Surfpirate comments on May 28, 2018:
I agree that some children who were raised godlessly in a godless world would invent imaginary friends as many children do until they are 6 years old, then they put those things away with their security blanket. Granted the mentally deficient children and the retarded kids might keep up their delusion into adulthood but normal people would have no religion that spontaneously generated in their brains. As Joe Rogan points out, even the retarded kids would have issues with Noah's Ark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etCRX5nXLf8

Surfpirate comments on May 28, 2018:
I have visited and lived in many countries, America was one of the nicest and most friendly but at the same time also one of the most dangerous and unwelcoming, it all depended upon who you met. I'm pretty sure the country is bi-polar. I started paying extra in order to not have to fly through the States to my final destination, it's just too much of a hassle so it's worth it for me not to deal with TSA and US Customs which generally treat everyone as suspected terrorists. I haven't visited the States since Trump got into power and doubt that I will, my tourist dollars will be going elsewhere.
An interesting viewpoint of the American lawn. [blogs.scientificamerican.com]
Surfpirate comments on May 28, 2018:
The original lawns were in France and England, they were developed by the aristocracy making a land grab on the public commons, a communal grazing area that had existed since Medieval times, the aristocrats fenced this area off and stole the ancestral land rights, then they planted it only in grass which was a sign of opulence because this was arable land that no longer produced crops or livestock for the citizenry. By prominently wasting the production of these lands which were central to all of the estates, the aristocracy were flaunting their wealth, the larger the lawn the larger the acreage taken out of production and the greater the status as the aristocrats were flaunting the idea that they didn't need the production from their lands. The ultimate expression of class division because not only were the aristocrats flaunting their wealth and social status but they were doing it at the expense of their subject. Little wonder the lawn is associated with status.

I tend to be content within myself and my life has always had a good deal of chaos and change in it. I am always busy doing something but never doing a thing just for the sake of doing something, that would be a rut which I would think is a mini-death, just following a routine and not living.

He died of course, left a greasy smudge in the concrete where he got fried and fell to the floor. I'm guessing it was pretty painful.

Can someone tell me why is America so religious?
Surfpirate comments on May 27, 2018:
The United States of America was the first country founded largely on the Protestant religion which from the Roman Catholic point of view was heresy. The Roman Catholics had been in control for a thousand years in Europe so this was a major break from the control of the Pope and many Protestants fled Europe in order to escape religious persecution from the Catholic majority. This may have lead to the deep religious roots in America as it was founded by various sects of what would have been viewed as religious extremists. Plenty of historic evidence of the extreme nature of some of these 'new' religions.

I'm all for it in other people but not for myself at the moment. The problem is the fallout on other people, that's the real issue because the person who commits suicide successfully is now dead and it is the survivors who are left with the mess.
So what is your most hated song of alltime?
Surfpirate comments on May 26, 2018:
Years ago when I was just a small contractor building custom homes I got fed up with my crew constantly changing the channel on the job site radio back and forth from Country to Rock to Country to Rock. I realized that not only was the constant bickering bad for morale it was costing me as the guy who had to make payroll each week, doh ray me - money. So I decided to ban radios from the job site to stop the constant bickering, this had a unifying effect on my crew who now banded together against their evil overlord - that would be me. After a bunch of complaining about the right of workers to have music on the job (not true) I told the men that if they wanted music on the job then I had no problem with that, just with the radios, so if they wanted music they could sing and I would have no problem with that. Pretty clever for a young, boss man - never underestimate a construction crew. They got together at the bar that night and hatched up a plan to get even with me. They took me up on my offer and rehearsed several Las Vega show tunes, the favourite being Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual which they serenaded me with for the next few days. I almost always have a song running in the back of my head because I am a singer myself but this endless loop got into my brain like a worm and it wouldn't come out, it was even in my dreams. I eventually capitulated when I couldn't take it anymore, morale improved because of the unifying force I presented and the Country and Rock guys took turns on alternate days with the radio so it was a win overall BUT I still can't bear the sound of 'It's Not Unusual'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGRZBa4cKWA
Did people unfollow me, or they're all ignoring me now for some unknown reason?

Some days are just slow, not for you but for everyone. We are all ego centric but that doesn't mean that the world revolves around us. Relax, kick back and enjoy the ride.

Those troughs would make awesome aquaponic grow beds.
Ok Donto I have a pineapple top. What do I have to do to get this thing to grow?
Surfpirate comments on May 26, 2018:
I picked up a couple of pineapples at the grocery store back in March because they were on sale, decide to try and plant the tops just for shits and giggles. One of them made it and one of them wound up in the compost pile. I put mine in a container just a bit bigger than the base of the pineapple top, tossed in a bit of potting soil and kept it very wet. I think having enough of the pineapple attached to the top is important, the one that died didn't have much of the pineapple fruit to work with and it only last a couple of weeks.
Caught 7 fishes, emptied, scrubbed, refilled, cleaned pre-filter and DONE! The annual cleaning of my...

Since you already have a pond have you considered an aquaponic garden to go with it? I've done it myself and it is a win win.

You are what you eat and having an organic vegetable garden with heritage varieties is one way to make sure that you're good and wholesome. :)
Until people get tired of people, including children, being killed or wounded, they will not take ...

Until Americans (I say Americans instead of people because this really is an American problem, nobody else in the 1st world does this shit to the extent that Americans do) get tired of always living under the threat of being shot, the carnage will continue. Why can't the US be more like Canada? You have a problem with someone? You talk it out and if that doesn't work then you just punch them in the face a couple of times until you feel better, then you apologize, offer them a hand up off of the floor and buy them a beer. If the guy's nose is broken, no big deal, a trip to the emergency room is free and they'll reset it in no time. All of this guns, guns, guns mentality is just silly - it's much easier to fix a broken nose than it is to patch up a sucking chest wound - stop it.

An eternity on your knees, singing praises to a psychopath of a supreme being, if it exists then I don't ever want to go there because that really would be hell.
Let's all help the USPS get out of the red and screw with junk-mailers.
Surfpirate comments on May 25, 2018:
I thought it was the completely unreasonable pension payments that the government was requiring of the USPS that was the problem. Isn't that the real problem?

What women want on a first date.. Is it true?
Surfpirate comments on May 25, 2018:
I think most people like to be liked for themselves, whether or not we get that depends upon who we are and who we are with. I really don't miss dating.
