Millennial women don't like Trump but will they vote in the mid-terms? [refinery29.com]

I am going to be extremely disappointed if they do not get out there and vote.
Surfpirate replies on Aug 19, 2018:
@Countrywoman When I lived in Ecuador pretty much everyone was Catholic but almost nobody believed and the church was more of a social gathering place. You don't get thrown in jail if you don't vote but you get fined because you are neglecting your civic duty, essentially littering by throwing your ballot in the street like garbage, so you are free not to vote but you have to pay for the privilege. Correa was in power when I lived in Ecuador, he told the US military that they could have their base in Manta provided the US reciprocated by allowing Ecuador to open a military base in Miami, the Americans refused so Correa closed the base. The military junta that had been in power prior to democracy being re-established had run up a bill with the Americans and the World Bank, most of it being graft to pay off the military puppets. Correa told the bill collectors to collect the money from the ex-generals who had actually received the money as the Ecuadorian people never got any of it. Moreno is not indigeno and neither is Correa but at least Correa broke the chokehold that the European and American banks had on Ecuador and he gave diplomatic shelter to Julian Assange when the US spy agencies were trying to get him extradited for torture and imprisonment in the US because he aired some of their dirty deeds. Nobody was ever put at risk by Wikileaks but a lot of powerful people wound up with egg on their faces and they hate that, so they want to put a chill on this sort of reporting by making an example of Julian Assange. Sadly, Moreno will be throwing Julian Assange to the wolves soon, a case of illegal confinement according to the UN Tribunal that investigated the case. You are free to speak anything you want to in Ecuador but it is like all the old Spanish colonial nations and operates under Napoleonic law so you better be able to back up what you say or you will be in court facing a Denuncia law suit - they take libel and slander very seriously in Ecuador. I found Ecuador to be very free when I lived there for more than a year, the people are monetarily poor by North American standards but they are much richer than they were a decade ago and one thing you see everywhere you go is polite people who smile and wish you good morning.

@Eldovis There are plenty of rules that go with those canals and sheltered coves. Good friends of mine had a beautiful liveaboard boat that they built themselves in Bermuda, even there it had become very difficult to find a liveaboard space that didn't require shuttling by dinghy to a mooring. There was always the concern that their home would slip it's mooring and wind up on the rocks, especially in hurricane season.

Surfpirate replies on Aug 18, 2018:
One of the things I found so interesting in Season 1 was how quickly things changed once the tipping point was reached. It went from mildly oppressive, then bank accounts frozen, then women's rights erased and suddenly live rounds being fired on protesters in the space of a few weeks. That's the way it is with coup d'etats.

Surfpirate replies on Aug 18, 2018:
It does help to connect the memories in your mind, the good and the bad. Like the time I had a rear tire blow out right beside a military checkpoint in southern Mexico, it sounded like a shotgun blast. The vendors who gather around these checkpoints to sell their wares were closest and did a duck and cover act, the military came on high alert with M-16's at the ready but everything went back to normal when I pulled over and checked the tire which was completely split. I drove with one of the dual wheels on the back completely flat for another 10 km to a road side lantana which fixes tires, usually located under a tree for shade. They changed out the spare with trucks whizzing by just feet from their head and charged me $6.
I think you all missed it.

Surfpirate replies on Aug 18, 2018:
Well you certainly don't have to be interested in UFO or other such things to enjoy Ecuador but you would be well advised to learn some Spanish if you want to have a full and rewarding experience. There are very few places where English is spoken and if you only speak English then you will be in the Expat ghetto for all of your social interaction and much of your commercial life as well, which you will have to pay a premium for. The country is not large but it has a number of climatic zones that are more dependent upon elevation than upon latitude because Ecuador straddles the Equator. Guayaquil on the Pacific coast is hot and humid year round, Quito is quite cool at 9,000' ASL, Cuenca is about the same and is a continuous springtime but wet and cool, The Amazona is very hot again and then there are all the points in between that tend to be somewhere in between climate wise - plus the Galapagos which are unique. Ecuador was hyped by International Living for it's wonderful climate and affordability for retirees and as a result there has been a large influx of economic expat retirees moving to Ecuador for the past decade and more. It's not as rosy as all that but it is quite nice. The living can be very easy in Ecuador.
Life seemed simpler back in the last century.
powder comments on Aug 17, 2018:

@Snickers77 You don't have to be able to write Espanol but if you can even speak Spanglish it is a huge help. The nice thing about all of the romantic languages like French, Spanish and Italian is that they are essentially backwards compared to English so being dyslexic might actually help you to learn street spanish. Lots of Americans don't even try to learn the local language so it is easy to meet people just by helping them out with a bit of spanish language skills.

@DUCHESSA I would say that telling people to make a case to keep someone from leaving any group is the height of arrogance. There's a whole wide world out there, constantly changing and in flux, when you are no longer comfortable where you are then you should move or change your expectations, not demand people make a case for you to stay. I don't ask people to kiss my ass in order for me to grace them with my presence because that would be truly arrogant. As an aside I find that many of your posts are also quite arrogant and annoying but I let it slide because that's your right just as it is my right to wish you would go elsewhere with your shitty attitude. Watch out for that door knob yourself.

@CelticFire He must get bored but he is a real operator, I saw him trying to pick up a young chick passing by that he seemed to know, she just blew him off and he went back into character. There is a town about an hour drive out of Cuenca that was the original capital for the area but the governor abused the natives so badly, constantly demanding more and more gold that eventually the natives attacked him and the whole town the night before the tribute was to be delivered. The natives killed everyone in the town and poured molten gold down the throat of the governor in an attempt to quench his insatiable thirst for gold. The nuns are pretty hot though, I'd never seen a nun in heels before I went to Cuenca. lol

@Snickers77 Ecuador is one of the best places in the new world to learn to speak Spanish, it is the most pure form outside of Spain itself. We studied for several months and the private lessons were really affordable, it opened a lot of doors for us that would otherwise have been shut. Imagine being a Mexican in the US but not being able to speak any English or just enough to sound like a toddler, you wouldn't get very far would you? ;) Spanish lessons would be one of the best investments you could make and you will also get to meet a lot of other expats if you take regular classes.

I spent so many years being the man with all the answers that I have had to learn to tone it down in retirement. I'm not expected to provide all the answers anymore, it's not my job and I try to keep my mouth shut now. Just because I know the answer doesn't mean I have to share it with everybody.
Surfpirate replies on Aug 17, 2018:
@Stacey48 Not all of the answers are available on Google, sometimes you have to ask the old man for the answer because he has common sense from having to come up with practical solutions on the spur of the moment. Fuck that made me sound really old. :D

Surfpirate replies on Aug 16, 2018:
@Stacey48 I hear someone yell 'Hey BOSS!' and I still turnaround to see who is calling for me, force of habit. The problem is that I usually do know the answer because I have been asked so many questions over the years, a lot of them repeatedly, so I know the answers by heart. I had a boss when I was just a pup and he played a game with all us Newbies. If you came into his office with a question he would immediately ask you if you had a dollar bill on you, when you said yes he would ask to see the dollar bill, so you would pull a dollar bill out of your wallet and he would take it from you, then the game would begin. If you asked a question that you should easily be able to figure out for yourself but were just too lazy to do that so you came to the boss for the answer, he would give you the answer but he would keep the dollar. If you asked a question that was difficult but you had asked it before and were just too lazy to bother remembering the answer then the boss would repeat the answer but he would keep your dollar. If you asked the boss a difficult question and you hadn't asked the question before then he would give you the answer and your dollar back. The boss wanted us to learn from him but he also wanted us to value the knowledge that he had amassed over the years, knowledge that had often cost him dearly to learn. That knowledge has value and we quickly learned to value not only the knowledge that the boss had (Del Borgel) but also we learned to value his time.

@John-Paul I have a younger brother with schizophrenia and it is a similar scenario, especially since his wife who also suffered from several mental illnesses took her own life with a rifle shot to the head a few years ago. My family is generally very well off, although we all go our own way with a survival of the fittest approach to life, it's a bit libertine but we all pitch in and do our bit for the mentally ill in our family, even if the religious side refuses to acknowledge the existence of mental illness and blames it on demons. I know, it's bat shit crazy but at least they chip in. Do what you can do for your sister, I know how frustrating it can be but you can't choose your family, you just have to deal with them. Life's a bitch, then you die, blah blah blah. Keep plugging along, keep your plan flexible and your options open, it's the best you can do, plus hope for the best of course. :)

@Sheannutt I like heights, I have spent many hours up in tower cranes or walking the high steel on my construction projects but I also know Ecuador and their safety protocols - Dodgy as Fuck! Safety in Ecuador consists of the saying - 'Don't be Stupid or you will get yourself hurt'. It's a very interesting country to live in and you must constantly be on your toes. This is one of my favourite pics of our visit to Machu Picchu, it's in the middle of the ruinas and it points to an open staircase that leads you down to the main ruins and the hitching post of the sun. If you don't pay attention and follow the arrow then you will fall about 30' to a sloped embankment which is very steep, then you will roll over and over for about 50' before dropping off the edge of the precipice to your death about 2'000 feet below. Granted this is in Peru but you get the general idea - Don't Be Stupid or You Will Get Yourself Hurt. ;)
