I don't think it would be a good idea to let napthalene leach into the soil of my garden, the plants would take it up and it is toxic. I do use them in our motorhome to deter mice but I think it works best in enclosed spaces.

@FrayedBear I liked seeing alpacas and llamas all the time when we lived in Peru and in Ecuador but I don't know if I wouldn't want them in my backyard. They spit on you and they have a habit of spontaneously aborting their fetus if they become upset. Dried llama fetuses were often for sale at the local mercados, kind of creepy looking.

Nature finds a way to overcome all of our deterrents, very true. I expect some losses but I do my best to minimize them. The chicken wire tenting I installed over top of my beets worked like a charm against the deer this year, last year they ate every single one in a single night, still something managed to gnaw on one of the beets I pulled up yesterday, possibly a mouse or a small rabbit.

@LiterateHiker It's amazing how callous some employers can be towards their employees, even at the family factory I found this to be true. I found one worker cleaning out a transformer tank with a powerful metal cleaner with only a rag tied over his face, I managed to pull him out of the tank before he was overcome by the fumes. He started vomiting and couldn't walk or stand up without my assistance so I took him to the Emergency dept. at the local hospital where he was given oxygen and he recovered. My stepdad was so pissed off at me for doing this, he thought it would make the other workers lazy but he was just too cheap to pay for proper safety equipment. The guys refused to do that job without a fan to clear the fumes and a proper dust mask with chemical filters after that experience, the old man was pissed off at me for years over that one. A year later he had to step up safety protocols when a delivery guy electrocuted himself when they were running up a large transformer for testing to 150% of rating. The guy died on the spot because there weren't proper lock outs, just a piece of caution tape that he ducked under to save a few seconds to make the delivery. The factory was shut down for several days while an investigation took place and my stepdad was fined heavily but to this day he thinks that he was the wronged party.

@Leafhead I can't say for certain because I have so many deterrents going on at once to tell if the lavender is doing the trick against the rabbits and I don't have many rabbits in my area. Surfpirate replies on Jul 7, 2018:
It would take a 10' high fence to keep them out and 12' would be better in case they were really determined to get in. Such a fence would look terrible and ruin my view so I take alternative steps that aren't foolproof but I can live with them. There are metallic strips on the fence to startle the deer when the wind is blowing, a motion activated, solar powered light, chicken wire over top of the beets (deer love beets for the sugar), lavender, marigolds and garlic, plus I let one section grow wild with weeds which provide cover for the crops. It's a process. :)

Crickets are delicious! Did you try the ones dusted in cayenne pepper? They are usually sold with grasshoppers and those legs you just break off and chuck in the garbage.

@FrayedBear I agree that the weather forecasts are more accurate in the short term than they were even 20 years ago, the technology has improved that much over the years and makes 24 hr forecasting very accurate but once you start casting further out on the time line it gets very grey. I used to check my tropical storm sites every morning during hurricane season when I was building in the Caribbean and the potential variables were pretty large for major cells and their intensity. We're seeing more extreme weather than we did when I was a kid back in the 60's and I do think it will continue to get worse and more unpredictable.

@FrayedBear I will have to shoulder any blame as I designed the structure and drew up the plans so any design flaws will rest with me. It's pretty straight forward structurally but there are a lot of clear spans and snow/wind loads that I over engineered for, basically the whole house is built to commercial specs which is what I am familiar with. So long as I don't get more than 6 ft of snow on the roof I am fine and that includes the live loading from the green roof.

@MissKathleen I picked up that info while researching the green roof design for this house. It's very hard to find anyone who will do the work on a residential project, mostly institutional projects so far. In the end I hired a local roofing contractor and his nephew to work with me on the flat EPDM membrane roof. Once I get the architectural panels and flashing installed I can see about installing the drain matt and seedom trays. Green roofs are now mandatory in most European cities for new construction because they reduce storm water and energy costs associated with cooling and heating.

Lawns are a result of French aristocrats trying to impress each other by stealing the commons and using it as a private grassy area to show they were so rich they could be wasteful of land that was previously used to graze the villagers livestock. Other aristocrats followed the example and soon the middle classes thought they would adopt the idea and so we have a multi-billion dollar industry that does nothing but waste resources to impress each other with. Sounds about right for our culture.
