@Ellatynemouth Although I don't see it as convoluted, I see it as multiple straight lines and how they interact with each other. I see multiple options and multiple solutions and variable combinations where most people just see a tangled mess. Untangling projects was what I did for much of my career, sometimes untying knots and sometimes cutting them out completely until the project was running smoothly again, it paid very well but you had to be able to see the order in the chaos. ;) My wife decided on what is the right way and then just barrels ahead, I pity those that get in her way, not even skid marks in front of the spot where she ran them right over. :D

@jeshuey Not the first time I've heard this and probably not the first time you have had your definition of Libertarianism questioned either, that's how it is with a bunch of idealistic freedom lovers. I'm a Canadian so there are definitely differences in what qualifies as being a Libertarian here compared to where you are in Florida. Add to it that I am a Lefty Libertarian and it gets even murkier. I do like much of what Ron Paul has to say on the topic , he walks the walk from what I can tell. We have a provincial election here next week, I will probably vote Green Party because that makes the most sense in our current political climate where everything is topsy turvy. Would Lincoln even recognize the present day Republican Party? Unlikely.

I've done it ever since and yes, I have never had a partner who didn't appreciate getting their morning cup of java in bed as soon as I heard them start to stir. ;)

@Kojaksmom a Libertarian would not be in favour of child labour because the opportunity cost of having a child do a menial task instead of getting an education would be a long term net loss to society. My home country of Canada has child labour laws, affordable post secondary education that may be going back to free depending upon who wins the next election, universal health care and potentially a no user pay drug plan. The reason Canadians are in favour of these government services is because it maximizes the potential earning power of Canadians and that means it maximizes the tax base to provide these services, it's all quite pragmatic although the government spins it as altruism. As a Lefty Libertarian I support these initiatives because business no longer wants to pay it's fair share to provide the roads, health care and education initiatives that are necessary to promote a free and open society. Libertarianism is about Liberty and can anyone be free when others are in chains, history shows us that it is not the case. If you want to be free then you have to work towards making everyone else free as well or it becomes a game of crabs in the bucket. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtSzpKiARrI

Did you just say that the oppression of religious dogma has kept people from committing crimes they might otherwise have committed out of fear of hellfire and damnation and you think this is a good thing? Furthermore, did you just say that the empty comfort people derived from this massive lie against human potential and growth as a species is also a good thing? I would suggest that freedom and democracy came about in spite of religion and that the power of kings and other despots is legitimized by religion. One has to wonder how much humans might have advanced as a species without the oppression of religious dogma. Religion is not a positive force in society, it has been shown that Atheists are at least as moral as Theists and they do so without the fear of a sky daddy raining down hellfire on them it they don't act morally. How can Theists even claim to have the moral high ground when they have to be coerced by threat of eternal damnation to behave in a civilized manner?

Surfpirate replies on May 31, 2018:
There are many good books that have been banned for the sake of a single sentence or paragraph, books that are great literature and the bible by comparison is a homicidal, genocidal, misogynistic and barbaric train wreck of a cobbled together collection of myths and fables. The bible does not deserve respect as a literary work or as a moral guidebook. That our western culture is deeply rooted in this book is no defense of it, our culture was deeply rooted in slavery until a little over a century ago, should slavery be respected? Your position that the bible is full of comforting lies that give people false comfort is equally indefensible as it does more harm than good and in fact encourages people to put off living today for an imaginary heaven that will never come. It robs people of their real life, the only one they can be proven to have for the sake of a pipe dream. No sir, this book of yours does not deserve respect, it shouldn't be burned but it should be kept as an example of deceit and superstition and ignorance, to be a warning against such beliefs.

@nicknotes Nope, don't read the paper but it is delivered daily for those who imbibe that stuff. 500 or so year round residents and in the summer it swells to 3 times that number. Islanders are a different breed, if I am out of something then I just call around until I find someone who is on the mainland and ask them to pick it up for me or I borrow it from another islander who has it and then replace it, the same applies if someone calls me or asks to borrow something, whatever it might be. This is my 5th island so it becomes a bit of a lifestyle choice, everybody waves to each other, even if you don't know or even like that person because in the end, they are an islander and islanders stick together.

About the only thing I learned from religion was that a person has to stick to their convictions if they are honorable, no matter how many shit kickings you get for doing so. I won my fair share but nobody wins every fight, 4 broken noses and too many black eyes to count but the point is that eventually most of the idiots backed off and a few of the good guys actually backed me up when it was two on one which happened a lot. Not because the good guys shared my point of view but because they respected my standing up against the odds. If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything is something my dad always used to say - of course he also said fake for the smaller guy and then punch the bigger guy in the throat. :D

Come recess, I usually got to fight some idiot who thought I was fair game because I was different because I didn't do what he did every morning. I know how hard it is to stick by what you believe in and fight for it when the other guy doesn't understand that you are just the same as he is, only different. Trump telling the citizens he represents that they are criminals when the Supreme Court clearly says they aren't is a travesty, Trump works for the people and not the other way around. The same goes for the team owners who are trying to strong arm the players. Most importantly the same goes for anyone who wants to force blind obedience upon others because that's the road to fascism as the Supreme Court rightly pointed out back in 1943 when people were fighting and dying to stamp that shit out, not praise it.

The river does freeze over but because the water is always moving it usually only gets thick for about a month or so. This pic was taken on March 1st this year, a long winter but not too bitter, the swans even stuck around for the whole winter, they usually go to open water in February.

Surfpirate replies on May 30, 2018:
Very few mosquitoes on the island, there is usually a breeze as this is one of the best freshwater sailing areas in North America and except for that reedy section in the background of the pic it is all flowing water from the Great Lakes heading to the Atlantic. In the winter there is a bubbler system that keeps the ferry lanes open, they are both cable ferries so the route is constant.

Do you know if they will continue to fruit once the temps get up into the 90's, most tomatoes seem to shut down when the temps get to high but this tomato plant seems to have adapted to the Florida climate.
Surfpirate replies on May 30, 2018:
@Donto101 True I lived in Bermuda for many years and we were on the same latitude as Washington DC but never saw any snow because we were right in the middle of that warm current. Mangoes and Papayas grew like weeds but any of the colder veggies were a problem and even tomatoes could be tricky to grow. Buying them in the grocers after a 750 mile sea journey on a cargo container made for expensive tomatoes that didn't taste very good.

For the same reason gun control is forgotten when an armed citizen takes down a shooter.
Surfpirate replies on May 30, 2018:
@Holysocks I found it so hypocritical for a past president of GM to be quoted as saying that Tesla would be out of business by 2019 because Elon Musk didn't know how to run a business. This coming from a man who begged for bail out money and spent decades undermining any attempts to get the auto industry away from fossil fuels. No doubt the Koch brothers sent him a cheque for services rendered.

@repubatheists where did these 'migrants' come from? Oh yes, the countries that are being bombed to secure corporate power and profits. Are these people who have been uprooted from their homes poor and even desperate enough to commit crimes in order to survive? Probably so. Blowback is a factor in any war for profit, so if we don't want the 'migrants' then we have to stop making more of them by bombing the crap out of their home countries. Hand guns are only good for one thing, killing people. You can't hunt with them and they aren't even much use for target practice but they sure make a small person feel big about themselves. As Bruce Lee famously said 'Any Fool can pull a trigger'.

@Ellatynemouth garlic grows just fine in a planter, even an old bucket with some decent soil will do and it requires very little attention, just plant it early and it will be ready by fall when the bottom leaves turn brown. It is also an effective deterrent against many garden pests like deer, squirrels and rabbits, even some insect pests. I plant a garlic perimeter around my main vegetable garden as a barrier to pests that want to forage on my veggies. :)
