How are you using the word 'apologetic'? If you mean that atheist/agnostics are behaving as xtian apologists & defending xtianism - I don't think so! Just b/c someone prefers to be cordial doesn't mean that one agrees with the opposing position!
Surfpirate replies on May 16, 2018:
Perhaps I am more militant in my Atheism than others but I do try to be cordial whenever possible and it is certainly easier to do so when the religious belief isn't fundamentalist in nature. However, when some one gets in my face with their , either proselytizing or demonizing me or claiming some special moral rights because of their kooky beliefs then it's gloves off time. It is really irksome to have someone else who I know to be an atheist or agnostic sit quietly on the sidelines while someone else stands up for them because they want to be cordial, long after the time for being cordial is gone.

@mary25y The next question is 'If I do leave, where do I go?' I've lived on a few Caribbean Islands but I wouldn't want to be there if the SHTF, I'm a bit too pale to blend in with the locals and some of them still harbour some strong resentment. Mexico would be a disaster for Expats if America continues heading in the current direction, not the place to be a Gringo with the current rhetoric and worse if things escalate, I have several friends who have sold up and left, others that are sticking it out and I worry about them. South America could be a possibility if you spoke Spanish, Ecuador could be good or Uruguay, but Brazil and Argentina not so much. No hablar Espanol, no tenga nada. Europe could be alright if you had enough money and didn't need a Social Security check as those would likely stop coming if things continue to go south. New Zealand is hard to get into and the same applies to Australia. Asia is nice to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. Africa I can't say because I don't know but something tells me NO.

Surfpirate replies on May 12, 2018:
@schmiedeskamp I agree completely that humans are amazingly adaptable but being a slave from the tropics, shipped across the ocean in inhumane conditions, then picked over by every slave buyer from Barbados to New York City and finally dumped off as the dregs in Canada to perform hard labour and live in a lean to shed for the livestock through a Canadian winter are long odds for survival. Bear in mind it would be pre-1834 Canada, wood stoves were still a luxury for many, drafty houses with inefficient fireplaces were the norm. I do recall reading a historic account of a visit by one of the English Lords who had been appointed to Canada back in the late 1700's and how his man servant was a black negro which raised quite a stir at the time, many Canadians having never seen a black man in the flesh before. Certainly there were black settlements in Canada because Canada was the end of the Underground Railroad where slaves were finally safe from capture and return to their owners in the South. There is a historic settlement in Oro-Medonte not far from where I used to live on Lake Couchiching, built on land granted to them by the Crown. So Africans can adapt to cold climates most certainly but it would have been a greater hardship for them than the Irish indentured servants that were shipped over during the clearings and the potato famine. My brother in law was born in Jamaica but moved to Toronto as a child, he still complains about the bitter cold here and loves the hot humid summers but maybe that's just him.

Surfpirate replies on May 12, 2018:
The flip side of this argument is to paint every white person with the same slavers brush, to insist that all white people were complicit in black slavery. There were very few black slaves in my native Canada, the climate is barely tolerant of people raised in cold climates and is potentially lethal to people from tropical climates, at least before the invention of central heating. I'm not saying my Canadian ancestors were adverse to having black slaves back in the mid 1700's when we first came over but it just wasn't a viable option, investing in livestock hardy enough to survive the winters was a much better business decision. Indentured servants was the way to go back in the early days, basically the poor or criminals who would be sold into temporary slavery for a period of 7 years, after which they would regain their freedom having paid off their debt for transportation to the New World. Faced with the prospect of death by starvation or by the gallows, indentured servitude was an option that many whites opted for, including some of my ancestors. The trick was to survive the last year of servitude because the employer/owner would cut back on expenses like food/clothing/heat in the final year because there was no incentive to provide for the slave that was soon to be freed. The Underground Railroad's terminus was in Canada because there were laws on the books until after the American Civil War that allowed slavers to recapture escaped slaves in 'free states' and return them to their owners in the 'slave states'. Something I had to point out to some of my black workers in Bermuda who accused me of being the descendant of black slave owners who had made their fortunes off the sweat of the brow of slaves. Slavery was banned officially in Canada in 1834 but black slaves were virtually non-existent here, indentured servitude for white virtual slaves continued for another century, including the transportation of orphaned children for work on farms until the 1940's and the subjugation of the native peoples which has only recently been addressed. Aren't humans a bunch of enslaving bastards and I'm not even going into the history of slavery among non-whites like the Barbary pirates, Chinese slavers, Native American slaves captured in war and even African tribal slavery.

Sounds to me like a confidence issue. You're terrified that you don't know or can't do something. Either in general or something specific. Accept that you have limits just like everyone else and next time the soldier will share his cigarette with you and leave you alone.
Surfpirate replies on May 9, 2018:
A plausible interpretation except that confidence has never been something I lacked. generally or specifically. I know the soldier is going to kill me the moment he smiles at me, he does a little shoulder check just before he approaches and I'm not afraid at all, instead I am resigned and even content. I've had a good run but the world has gone to hell in a hand cart and I know it's my time to get off the ride. The sound of my skull crunching is pretty bad though, makes me grit my teeth just thinking about it, the pain actually isn't too bad, more of an assisted suicide than a murder. Oh, I also know that I am 73 years old in the dream, don't know why but I know it and also the city is Philadelphia but a lot has changed.

Surfpirate replies on May 8, 2018:
In my experience the single most important factor in obtaining riches is to have an all consuming greed that allows no room for compassion or kindness unless that moves the amassing of wealth forward. Little wonder some wise acre said that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into heaven. I'm not talking about being well off or financially comfortable but for real wealth it has to be an all consuming passion. Maybe that's why I have known so many tightfisted, miserable, rich guys and so few generous and happy rich guys.
