I think its important to ask good questions. And then question the answers. I’m not cynical, though, despite my love of sarcasm and dark humor. I’m a professional writer and editor, with a background in journalism in newspapers and radio. I’ve done a lot of other stuff, too, working with my hands and my brain. I’m on this site to connect with folks who may ask some of the same questions I do — to chat with, learn from, have fun and even hang out with. I’m set in my ways, and my ways include looking to experience new stuff, new ideas and new people, and starting new friendships in which we don't have to work around issues of religion is a plus. Hope we cross paths …

It's Wild and Wacky Wednesday! Let's see yer funny stuff!

Happy Tuesday wonderful people! What is something new that you would like to try?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 8, 2020:
Space flight. I know it’s beyond probability, but it’s a nice fantasy. On the other hand, something I WILL provably find myself doing soon after the pandemic ends is whitewater rafting the Rogue River in Oregon. Sometimes, I get talked into things ... (I highly recommend the train ride. If you can afford it, on a longer trip, get yourself the little room. Nothing like it!)

Happy Thursday Everyone! Work was hella busy today, so I was unable to get to posting before now.
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 4, 2020:
I have a “it’s complicated” relationship with stress! The same deadlines that stress me out also focus my attention and lead to many positive accomplishments. The thought of something can be stressful, while actually doing or experiencing that same thing gives me pleasure or satisfaction. Yet another of those contradictions I enjoy in life ...
Always wondered.

The-Krzyz comments on Nov 25, 2020:
An improvement on the original.
Happy Tuesday! Which charity or charitable cause is your favourite to which to contribute?
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 24, 2020:
I tend to give locally, to groups whose work I can see, and avoid most of the larger organizations with high overhead and administrative costs. My one exception is the International Red Cross, because I remember my parents talking about how much it meant to them when they’d show up in the hellish places in which they were held prisoner by the Nazis during WWII (mom was a concentration camp survivor; dad a POW). Otherwise, I have been a longtime supporter of a small tribal college on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, which I visit regularly.
Can an atheist be a proud Secular Christian?
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 22, 2020:
They may not use that label, but I think most of the people on this site fit that category: Having ditched the theological/“god” part of Christianity, they still often uncritically embrace the moral/ethical ideas for which the Jesus character is the front man.
Happy Friday Friends! What's something whose texture is repellant to you?
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 20, 2020:
Food-wise, I’m very adventurous, but draw the line at sea cucumbers! East Asian food has been a part of my diet since childhood, and I live in a majority Chinese community and am still discovering new stuff, some of which I like and some not. But sea cucumbers are one of the few foods to which I can apply the term “repellant!”
Happy Thursday Everyone! What's a pet you've always wanted, but never had?

The-Krzyz comments on Nov 9, 2020:
Good for you! I think self care is an important yet all-too-underappreciated survival skill. I learned myself to ignore it at my own peril. Sometimes, my self care involves clearing my calendar, keeping to myself and creatively loafing; other times, getting myself outdoors for a nice walk and some fresh air. Probably the best lesson my life experience has taught me about self care is NOT to save it just for times of stress or crisis: cultivate it as a good habit, part of a plan to keep yourself healthy, happy and strong!
Happy Saturday Everyone.
The-Krzyz comments on Nov 7, 2020:
As an editor, I am afraid that speeches like those will make my work much harder than it has been for the last four years. People may want to follow their example and start using complete sentences again. (OK, OK: I liked them .. a lot! 😊)

The-Krzyz comments on Nov 2, 2020:
Rather than replace religion, I think it was philosophy that actively undermined the pretenses of religion for me. That, and an understanding of mythology from an anthropological and historical perspective.

Happy Monday Everybody! How do you shave?
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 12, 2020:
I have a Braun electric razor that seems indestructible: still works perfectly after more than 15 years. I use it when I’m in a hurry. Otherwise, I like an old-fashioned razor with shaving cream and hot water. I like the ritual of it, plus the sensual aspect — the feel of the blade and the water on my face is invigorating.
Happy Saturday Everybody! I've been in a slump, but I'm feeling a bit better, so I'll be cleaning ...
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 10, 2020:

I would like to submit the idea that religion IS politics.
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 9, 2020:
Well, yeah: obviously! Anything involving two or more people is political in some level. A lot of my work is in public policy, which is politics. I like two definitions, which I teach my students: politics as “the mechanics of power,” and as “the art of the possible.” For better or worse, I admit I find it kind of fascinating — and useful ...

Happy Thursday, Everyone! What is your favorite herb or spice?
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 8, 2020:
Totally with you on garlic, followed by chili and dill. I have a neighbor who grills up a bunch of garlic to cook with on a little hibachi in their yard every couple of days. The aroma fills up my back yard, and I’ll just stand there, inhaling deeply with a big smile!

Good morning, and Happy Tuesday! How much time do you spend in front of a screen each week?
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 6, 2020:
Varies wildly! I also do a lot of my work on a computer, and am a news hound to boot, getting info on current events in my car radio, my tv at home, and online in between. This is about to decrease as our heatwaves decrease, the smoke clears from our air, and outdoors adventure beckons.
Happy Monday everyone! What does October mean to you?
The-Krzyz comments on Oct 5, 2020:
One of my favorite months! I like to take my vacations in October, when (in other times) kids tend to be in school and parents at work. It’s the start of my hiking and camping season, and a friend who runs a pumpkin lot sets aside some good “eating pumpkins” for me to steam up and enjoy. Normally, I would also be traveling for some quarterly meetings around California, plus attending the annual Skeptics’ conference in Las Vegas — a gathering of like-minded folks that I will sorely miss this year. Finally, my fall harvest comes, and I am now picking tons of lemons, limes, tangerines, avocados, persimmons, bananas and pomegranates!
Happy Wednesday Everyone! I'm overwhelmed with work today, and I don't have a joke.
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 30, 2020:
Hey guys, Happy Tuesday! When you hear the phrase "Processed foods," what does that mean to you?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 29, 2020:
A “process” can be all kinds of things done to prepare or store food, and like the words used to indicate the opposite of “processed,” like “organic” or “natural,” it can be used imprecisely or even deceptively. I avoid foods that have additives like corn syrup or lots of sodium, are fried (especially deep fried), or are processed in ways that deprive them of their nutrients (like many breads and baked goods). Oh, yeah: I only eat foods that are chemically based!
Happy Monday! What’s the spiciest thing you’ve ever eaten?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 29, 2020:
A soft-shelled crab in a crimson chili sauce served me outside of Pusan, South Korea. Now, I grew up with spicy foods in predominantly Mexican-American neighborhoods in East Los Angeles, but nothing had prepared me for this. Nearly took the top of my head off after the first bite. My government minder was horrified: “Stop! I don’t want to explain how you died out here!” One of the few times I backed off of a meal I had started.
Happy Saturday Everyone! What “young person” things do you do?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 26, 2020:

Happy Thursday! What's one thing you've done to improve your health?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 24, 2020:
In the last couple of years, I’ve gotten serious about integrating stretching into my regular exercise practices, and it has benefitted my other training and physical activities a lot. Most dramatic: A couple of years ago, I tweaked my lower back when I pulled a load of 150 pounds or so while not braced properly, resulting in lower back pain that I was told would probably be permanent. Not so! I started doing stretches that worked that area, and the pain is gone as flexibility and strength increase.

Why hierarchy is a destructive force: Sapolsky [] .
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 10, 2020:
Hierarchy can be useful and practical as an ad hoc tactic. When power differentials become ossified in permanent structures, however, I think they become destructive of creativity, flexibility and potential.
Happy Thursday Everyone! I hope today finds you doing well.
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 10, 2020:
Not at all. I can be a very forgiving person, but don’t elevate “forgiveness” to some kind of virtue, as I’m not willing to give up the focus of a good grudge or the sheer joy of a well-planned revenge! 😈

The-Krzyz comments on Sep 5, 2020:
I also love seafood, and it’s become a bigger part of my regular protein intake. I grew up around boats, and my family used to go sailing and fishing off the California coast most weekends when I was a kid. We’d catch our dinner - mostly white sea bass back then - and then my mom would cook it up right on board. I’m no longer big on fishing, but gladly will eat the results! I like everything from fish tacos to clam chowder, and usually have sashimi once a week. My most daring seafood choice, however, is the infamous, deadly blowfish, served in a soup, Korean style!
Happy Friday, Heathens! What's your favorite popsicle flavor?
The-Krzyz comments on Sep 4, 2020:

Happy Thursday, Beautiful People! When's the last time you were proud of yourself?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 27, 2020:
Sounds like you had “Sewing Block!” What you describe is very familiar: Searching for that “Aha! moment” as I begin a project, usually something I’m writing, or maybe designing a presentation or curriculum. Right now, I ‘m getting ready to put together the fall edition of a quarterly news magazine I edit for a regional organization. If inspiration is slow in coming, I often start with the mechanics: assembling and editing articles, gathering info, selecting art and cartoons, etc. If the “Aha!” still eludes me, I goad myself into starting without expectations, knowing I can improve/change things later. Sometimes, “Aha!” just needs to see me start ... and I’m proud of myself when I see the process through.

Happy Saturday! What/who was your favourite pet ever?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 22, 2020:
A goldie-chow mix, sarcastically named “Fluffy,” who I rescued after she found me on a hike. I had her for 13 years, and she was a great dog, a good companion and a comfort in hard times.

The-Krzyz comments on Aug 22, 2020:
I remember those tracts from the ‘70s, as well as some children’s catechisms I was given as a kid in Catholic school with cartoonish pictures of kids surrounded by the flames of hell. Luckily this stuff didn’t resonate with anything in my personal life, or even with the rest of the curriculum at the school. I do a lot of work in the mental health field, and we have only recently understood the potentially lasting impacts of trauma on our health and developed better strategies for addressing it. Occasional recreational trolling ... 🙄
Happy Monday Everyone! What natural occurrence always makes you happy to see?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 17, 2020:
I grew up in, and now again live, in a dry chaparral Southwest environment, so I love when rainstorms start moving across the skies in fall and winter. When I lived in the Northwest, and it rained all the time (it seemed!), it was the coming of the snow in the high country.

"Leave No Trace" when hiking and camping is ignored by many
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 16, 2020:
Sadly, this type of degradation is spreading far and wide as people with no background in responsible outdoors behavior, and apparently lacking in basic civility or consideration for others, are flocking to trails and parks because the types of recreation they are used to are closed because of the pandemic.

Happy Saturday, Everyone! Something cheery, I think, for today. What is your favorite flower?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 15, 2020:
I really like flowers of all kinds: the wildflowers I encounter on a hike; all the offerings in a nice botanical garden; and whatever I find in my fairly overgrown yard. I don’t typically think in terms of “favorites,” but maybe the spectacular epiphyllum is a good candidate! I also like that they bloom at night and only last a day or two.

Happy Friday Everyone?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 14, 2020:
With my luck, people I really like and respect like you and members of this group will bail, leaving me with only the annoying ones on the site. I would really hate for that to happen! I’ve been a member for less than two years, and am slowly clawing my way to Level 8. I very much enjoy and value Agnostic, partly because I haven’t found anything else like it. Even living in a very large and diverse city, I still often feel the lack of a community of fellow non-believers and like our sometimes contentious membership with our disagreements, our breadth of interests and opinions, and diversity of, well, almost everything. The loss of any one of you would diminish that value and sadden me. If the site went downhill or even went under, I would mourn its loss. I’m hanging on for now and will see what happens.
Happy Thursday Everyone! When was the last time you were snooping, and found something you wish you ...
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 13, 2020:
I first became a journalist in the wake of Watergate and the Arizona Project, and have done my share of investigative work. Now, I mostly do other kinds of writing, but knowing how and where to find info, and how to check the sources of information, continue to be valuable habits/skills, especially these days. With my professional background, combined with my skepticism, I can usually “smell a rat” miles away, but once in a while that collides with my optimistic side, which still sometimes wants to believe in some things that sound good. A charitable organization wanted my endorsement recently, and their work sounded really good to me: until I dug a little deeper, and found out that most of their income went into executive salaries.

Hey guys, Happy Monday! Which appeals to you more - soft, sinuous curves and lines, or straight ...
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 10, 2020:
I’m a “curve person,” but appreciate both in context; and like the contrast between the two. California, where I live right now, is a long, slender state, with a lot of road trip potential. Interstate 5 is an efficient and boring route, charging fairly straight through our plains and deserts, getting one quickly north or south. Our beloved Highway 1, however, meanders gracefully along the coast, taking one near or through all kinds of beautiful and stoppable places worthy of enjoyment. 5 is my business road, 1 is my pleasure road!
Happy Saturday! Have you ever procrastinated out of fear of your own ineptitude?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 8, 2020:
I just enjoy procrastination - my way of saying “screw you!” to someone else’s deadline! But, the self-doubt part I know all too well. I do a lot of public speaking around the country: keynotes, trainings, presentations, classes. I know I’m good at it, but ALWAYS have to buck myself up in preparation and especially before I go out and take the mike. I usually remind myself of something I heard Lord Laurence Olivier say about his stellar acting career: that he always got butterflies before a performance, and that he’d quit if that ever stopped.
Happy Friday Everyone! How do you feel about clutter?
The-Krzyz comments on Aug 7, 2020:
I love clutter! As a devout materialist, my sense of identity and self-worth derives from my stuff. And what stuff it is: the end result of years of adventure and plunder! I’m not a hoarder, mind you — my stuff is interesting, well-organized and even valuable. And I can be an efficient minimalist when hiking, camping or raiding my enemies ... to get their stuff.

It's funny day! Share your jokes, stories, whimsical thoughts, and ALWAYS, always, Bad Dad ...

What to do?
Wow guys! You've really made me question my oil change choices! When's the last time you had to ...
The-Krzyz comments on Jul 28, 2020:
In these days of rapid change, it seems like I’m doing that a lot! Meetings on Zoom, wearing my bandana when running in the park, etc. Maybe the hardest when it hits close to home — or, at home, literally. I have houseguests coming over to spend a few days roughly every three weeks (leaving time for shopping/business, followed by two weeks self-quarantine). On the one hand, I always bid them to “make themselves at home,” on the other, I have my own ways of doing things ... So, I’m learning to be more flexible and open to change on the home front! Being a good host is really important in my culture.
Can't really argue with that logic.
The-Krzyz comments on Jul 26, 2020:
I certainly get the point, but would find it more moving if the first panel showed someone I respected, rather than someone I despise. Like a firefighter in full gear rushing into a burning building. But, that’s just me!
Good afternoon everyone! What's your favourite mixed drink?
The-Krzyz comments on Jul 25, 2020:
Rarely drink hard liquor, but prefer a high quality tequila or vodka straight up when I do. (Not including gin & tonic, as that is medicinal — needed in copious amounts to fend off the ever-present threat of malaria in my part of Los Angeles.)
Romantic relationship with a strongly religious person?
The-Krzyz comments on Jul 24, 2020:
Despite being fairly flexible myself, in my experience it usually became an issue, especially if my partner was of a Christian or Muslim worldview. Both faiths have a strong “us vs. them” attitude and are outright commanded by their faith to convert unbelievers or “spread the good word.”
Happy Friday, Everyone! When you're shopping for a hotel, what do you find is most important?
The-Krzyz comments on Jul 24, 2020:
I travel a lot in non-pandemic situations. Much of it is business/event related. Good news: The costs are covered by a government agency, an organization I am representing, or a client. Bad news: They pick the hotels, which are usually VERY "nice" but basically interchangeable and soullessly corporate. So when I travel on my own for pleasure, I look for unique, funky and often historic hotels that reek of character. Sure, one takes a chance, but I have mostly discovered real gems that become my go-to places to stay when I'm in that area.
