I think its important to ask good questions. And then question the answers. I’m not cynical, though, despite my love of sarcasm and dark humor. I’m a professional writer and editor, with a background in journalism in newspapers and radio. I’ve done a lot of other stuff, too, working with my hands and my brain. I’m on this site to connect with folks who may ask some of the same questions I do — to chat with, learn from, have fun and even hang out with. I’m set in my ways, and my ways include looking to experience new stuff, new ideas and new people, and starting new friendships in which we don't have to work around issues of religion is a plus. Hope we cross paths …

No stupid questions? Hmmm... ?
The-Krzyz comments on Feb 22, 2019:
I once had a professor at university who had a wonderfully dark sense of humor. When a student would preface a question by saying “This may be a stupid question, but ...,” he would jump in and say, always in an encouraging, comforting tone of voice: “Now remember, there are no stupid questions. Only stupid people.” Gosh, I loved his classes!

The-Krzyz comments on Feb 20, 2019:
I find the whole “gratitude” thing especially annoying. Not gratitude to someone for something tangible or specific, but an ubiquitous, generalized gratitude to no one in particular. WTF? I always wanted to be a millionaire… But APPARENTLY you have to have a million dollars first.
The-Krzyz comments on Feb 7, 2019:
I’m a millionaire, on paper. The reality is, I’d say my lifestyle is middle-middle class, at best. Most of any money I have is tied up: half in property (I own my home near Los Angeles), and half in investments, which generate a modest income. What it gets me is some freedom and some security, but not a lot of disposable cash for extravagant spending. Most people’s image of millionaires date back to pre-inflation days. I worked hard for years to get here, and am glad I saved over the years. I value that freedom and security more than any shiny baubles or chances to show off.

Hiding your lack of faith at work
The-Krzyz comments on Feb 6, 2019:
I facilitated a caucus session for people who question religion/spirituality at a national conference in the US a couple of years back. A LOT more attendees than I anticipated, many from “Bible Belt” states. Most of them said that they felt unsafe being open as nonbelievers or skeptics at work (and elsewhere) and a situation in which they could safely talk about this was rare for them. Especially in small towns, there aren’t many firewalls between work and the rest of your life. Even in the more urban and diverse environments I usually work in, however, often religious people are in the majority, and they tend to assume that everybody is like them. I try not to “go there” unless cornered, and often simply say that I’m “not interested” in religion. If pushed further, THEN I’ll tell them that I think the god of the Bible is a psychopath and that Jesus was a really bad carpenter.

What's the value of a course?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 14, 2018:
Agree with the other comments so far. It really depends on how you seek to use your knowledge. In the professional world, typically the degree from accredited institutions has the most credibility, especially in a competitive hiring process or in bureaucracies. Otherwise, knowledge -even wisdom - can be found in many, often surprising places, as can some really great teachers. In some professions, a degree is not as valuable as a good track record of having the skills to apply your knowledge. In the US, sadly, many formerly fine universities have become glorified trade schools. For some of us, however, knowledge is about more than monetization. Two of the most educated people I know are self-educated.

YES, if, as in my case, you were in a dysfunctional marriage. Not to say there weren’t good aspects, some of which I miss. Now, I can appreciate the freedom from being so close to a person who is very judgemental of others, has no boundaries, but has all the solutions to everyone else's predicaments. The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I haven’t shared in the author’s experiences, and so don’t share her conclusions. Personally, I find dating easier and less pressured now that I’m an elder. Firstly, the imperative to breed is gone. Secondly, because I have experienced and observed so many different types of friendships, “relationships,” and diverse human interactions over the years, I no longer think of an ideal or perfect type of connection to another person. That doesn’t mean I don’t have preferences and/or standards. But I feel that there are lots of ways it can look, and many more possibilities to explore.

The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I’ve read this and similar studies and it seems to me that what can be truly destructive is social isolation, of which lonliness can be a result. We are deeply social creatures, and have been so since before we became modern humans. We use each other as reference points and reality checks, and without that sort of contact and feedback, our judgement suffers and perspective narrows. Our greatest achievements have been collaborative (science, for instance). Downside can be groupthink, peer pressure and social dysfunctions, but I’ll risk those and would rather deal with them as opposed to missing all the intellectual, material and emotional possibilities my fellow human beings can offer.
