What's the value of a course?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 14, 2018:
Agree with the other comments so far. It really depends on how you seek to use your knowledge. In the professional world, typically the degree from accredited institutions has the most credibility, especially in a competitive hiring process or in bureaucracies. Otherwise, knowledge -even wisdom - can be found in many, often surprising places, as can some really great teachers. In some professions, a degree is not as valuable as a good track record of having the skills to apply your knowledge. In the US, sadly, many formerly fine universities have become glorified trade schools. For some of us, however, knowledge is about more than monetization. Two of the most educated people I know are self-educated.

Sounds a lot like what depression is like for me. I’ve learned to manage it, but it takes a lot of effort. Sometimes, I feel it coming on, so prepare for it and take a step back. When it does come, I just go with it, knowing that it always passes and that I'll be OK on the other end.

The dating pool in my neck of the woods.
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 13, 2018:
Upon much reflection: 1) Maybe we are “blaming the victim” here. Maybe those little vixens invited him into their Fairy Tire Pond and offered him beer to some dastardly end. Or, 2) Perhaps homeboy is a genius entrepreneur who has discovered a strategy that spells doom to all dating sites everywhere.

Where is the best place to go when you want to be alone?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 12, 2018:
I like the desert or more remote areas in the mountains to get away from other people for a while. Not the same as being “alone,” however. One is never alone Out There, and the company is often better.
Is there life after divorce?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 12, 2018:
YES, if, as in my case, you were in a dysfunctional marriage. Not to say there weren’t good aspects, some of which I miss. BUT, the negative eventually outweighed the positive, and I probably stayed in the marriage for a few years longer than was healthy for me (sometimes I do the wrong things for all the right reasons). Now, I can appreciate the freedom from being so close to a person who is very judgemental of others, has no boundaries, but has all the solutions to everyone else's predicaments. After the divorce, my horizons opened up again! Life goes on, regardless ...

I have to admit, I like putting on Americans.
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
Although I was born in the US, my parents were Eastern European refugees and, in my early years, I was brought up in a very Old World way. It was only in American schools that my assimilation took place ... incompletely. So, I’m conflicted. Part of me says “Stop picking on us, you belligerent Canadian bullies!” While the other half totally understands, approves, and questions if it’s sporting because it’s just way too easy to do. Dating is harder after 50. Here's why.... [thepowerofsilence.co]
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I haven’t shared in the author’s experiences, and so don’t share her conclusions. Personally, I find dating easier and less pressured now that I’m an elder. Firstly, the imperative to breed is gone. Secondly, because I have experienced and observed so many different types of friendships, “relationships,” and diverse human interactions over the years, I no longer think of an ideal or perfect type of connection to another person. That doesn’t mean I don’t have preferences and/or standards. But I feel that there are lots of ways it can look, and many more possibilities to explore.
As a non believer do you still enjoy movies/shows that derive story from religion?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I like a good, scary ghost story, despite not “believing” in ghosts! Mythology and folk culture consist of a lot of metaphor and dramatic device, and I suspect the biggest mistake is to take it literally.

I saw a study a few years ago out of Boston University and Bringham Young University about ...
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 11, 2018:
I’ve read this and similar studies and it seems to me that what can be truly destructive is social isolation, of which lonliness can be a result. We are deeply social creatures, and have been so since before we became modern humans. We use each other as reference points and reality checks, and without that sort of contact and feedback, our judgement suffers and perspective narrows. Our greatest achievements have been collaborative (science, for instance). Downside can be groupthink, peer pressure and social dysfunctions, but I’ll risk those and would rather deal with them as opposed to missing all the intellectual, material and emotional possibilities my fellow human beings can offer.

Just hire character actors. Give them a script and a role, let them improvise, and see if it works. If not, kill off the character and hand the actor a new script with a new role to play. Will save us a ton of money, and a lot of people could use the work.

Harm Caused By Religion. What Do You Agree/Disagree With?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 10, 2018:
OK: I could quibble about generalizations about all religions based on bad behavior on the part of the so-called "world religions," especially the Abrahamic ones, but this is a good conversation-starter and challenge to the assumption by many believers that religion is always a beneficial thing.

Could an atheist be a valid witness in a court trial?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 10, 2018:
I haven’t testified in court in years, but have and do serve in positions of “public trust” that require an “oath of office” in California and on a US federal level. I’ve always been given the option of affirmation, but my colleagues who choose to swear, still aren’t asked to reference the bible or any religious belief. (Full disclosure: I used to swear a lot when I was a sailor.)
The NYT magazine asserts that atheism is just another religion: [nymag.com]
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 10, 2018:

Question 32: What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 9, 2018:
Mark Twain, an atheist, once wrote that, if there WAS a heaven, there would be no humor there because humor is our way of dealing with the tragedies of life. In that spirit, maybe its precisely the most awful stuff that we have a need to laugh at.

Do you enjoy a good gossip?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 9, 2018:
Gossip is potentially useful information that is socially discouraged, or discouraged by authorities, because of its subversive and uncontrolled nature. Historian Yuval Noah Harari wrote that the need for good gossip among early humans played a big role in the development of speech. Therefore, I honor our ancestors by gossiping, and often.

The difference between religion and cults is tax exemption. Agree or disagree?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 6, 2018:
A gross oversimplification. It has to to with leadership and power differentails as structured by the group. There are cults that are now several generations old (I’d include the Unification Church and Scientology), and cults that are not “religious” in nature (some “self-help,” new age, and even political groups).
