Why were chainsaws invented? The horrifying reason in the link below 😨😨 [the-sun.com]
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 29, 2021:
I had open heart surgery about ten years ago. Chatting with the cardiologist afterwards, I had some questions, especially about the procedure and the healing process. I already knew that they had to saw open my sternum to get at, and remove, the heart. How did they close it up later, I wondered? Staples and glue. Next time, I’m skipping the hospital and going straight to Home Depot.

I’m surprised that more people on this site don’t know that the Satanic Temple is a secular-humanist organization dedicated to legally challenging the predominantly christian privilege in the U.S. They don’t actually “worship” Satan, but chose him as a symbol of resistance to blind obedience to authority, in the tradition of Blake and Twain. Their legal strategy complements that of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), with an added dash of dark humor. And they love posting memes featuring the lovable antics of baby goats ... 🐐

Will it matter a billion years from now whether we are kind or cruel to today?
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 14, 2021:
I think what we do DOES matter, but my reference points have to do with the consequences, or lasting impacts, of our decisions and life ways, not “kindness” or “cruelty,” which are values whose interpretation is relative. We are more likely to be judged as stupid if, in a billion years, some discerning and inquisitive eyes were to see evidence that we destroyed ourselves by destroying the environments upon which we depended; or that we altered the course of evolution on our planet by making life unsustainable for some life forms - even after we depart the stage - by trashing the resources they would need and so changing the nature of the possibilities offered on Earth. As to your final question, atheism is only one answer to a single question: Do gods exist? Logic does not demand any implications, and nihilism is as legitimate a candidate as humanism, positivism, pragmatism, rationalism or any other world view contending to occupy the space left behind as the gods leave.

I've never been one for labels.
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 2, 2021:
I pondered our many labels recently as a board member of a powerful nonprofit in California dedicated to the rights of people with disabilities (which includes me, BTW). It concerned a mission statement containing a boilerplate statement about fighting discrimination and safeguarding rights “regardless of” a typical list of factors, such as ethnicity/race, economic status, etc., plus a well-intentioned reference to “religion/faith.” I objected, because it leaves a lot of us out, but had to think hard about what to add that covers communities as diverse as ours. I eventually settled on “irreligion” as a placeholder umbrella term, but am not sure I’m completely satisfied. As for myself, I like the term “free thinker,” as it leaves room for change and nuance.
Happy Friday Everyone! What's better, fluffy socks or slippers?
The-Krzyz comments on Jan 1, 2021:
Socks indoors, thickness depending on how warm or cold it is; crocs for venturing onto the porch or nearby, and more protective wear if it’s wet or I’m venturing into the garden. (Regarding your socks/slippers paradigm: As a martial artist, I must be ready to defend myself at all times. Fluffy socks lessen the impact of a flying kick, and slippers, especially those resembling fuzzy animals, seldom inspire the desired psychological terror in my enemies. 😳)

Happy Monday Everyone! I have so much paper for the recycling bin! Do you recycle?
The-Krzyz comments on Dec 29, 2020:
I got into the habit of recycling ages ago, and live in an area that provides waste bins for recyclables, regular trash and greenwaste. I reserve those recyclables that can be redeemed for cash, and can do that at a station right behind a grocery store I use (after 2-3 months, I get maybe $5 - $10. Not much, but it’s so easy: why not?) I hardly generate any regular trash, and recycling and greenwaste are at least double that amount or more. I’m going to get smaller bins for everything except greenwaste. As I said, it’s a habit now, and easy to do!

Otherwise, I have been a longtime supporter of a small tribal college on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota, which I visit regularly.
