@Delaroux Fortunately I paid for my training out of pocket. I had no contract. If you want to be come an o/o I can give you a lot of advice! If I were to get back into trucking, I'd haul cattle. It's not something for a rookie. It's one of the most dangerous things you can haul around here. However, if you are an o/o, you charge whatever the price of fuel is per gallon per loaded mile. Have detention time? Charge them for that as well. I've seen far too many new o/o's go broke because they don't look at NET as apposed to GROSS! Yeah, you'd need an nice truck. Might cost 150K (or better) for a tractor. 70-90K for a bull rack. But I've heard of people paying that off in less than a year! Gotta run like hell tho! You know as well as I that in a CMV you are under VERY strict laws. For example you can get a ticket and placed OOS for "driving under the infuence of illness". Really. You get a cold... @Delaroux I've never heard of Stevens, but I guess they fronted you the money to get your class A? They then take monies out of your check. Then maybe some interest. There are companies like Swift and Schnider that do that. You might think "$700"/wk is good! But when you work 70 hours a week... That's not great. No o/t. Most are CPM. I was making 34 CPM with Keim starting. A friend of mine worked for UP. He was making 33 CPM and just about shit hearing what I started at. Yes there was and is a huge shortage of drivers. Why? Most can't/won't do it. That is why we allow Mexican drivers to do it in the US. CNN Money had an article about 10 years ago about it. People think truckers are just lazy and drive all day. Easy, huh? Far more to it than that. When I was flatbedding, those damn tarps were 130# each! It the winter it sucked! Folding them when half frozen sucked. Yeah, I'd get $25 for tarp pay, but when it takes 2 hours. Keep on truckin'! Even at the local/straight level!

@Delaroux Local trucking jobs are hard to get. That's because they are the most highly desired. You usually have a set schedule, and are at home every night. Lots of people don't realize that trucking is a 24/7 job. Not a 9-5 job. Get to where you need to be at 3AM then have to unload by 7AM? Forced disbatch? It ain't no glory job, but the saying goes "if you got it, a truck brought it". Unless you live 100% off the grid. I have an associates degree in Automotive Technology, and half a degree in Computer Science. Make 10/hr working on cars breaking your back, finish my second degree and end up in debt? Or buy your own trucks and make 100/hr. Tough choice. It is one of the few jobs you can start making very good money. I worked for Keim TS right out of trucking school. Hired me immediately. That was somethink like 65K/year.

I did OTR flatbedding for a while. Didn't last long. Bought my own trucks and trailer. If lines are that bad I'll just not take a load. When it was hard to find work hauling grain, I'd haul milk for another company. I was just a relief driver. I'd work maybe 2 days a week. In my own bed every single night. A typical trip from Leigh, Nebr, to LeMares, IA, paid $160 for about 6 hours worth of work. Didn't have to pay for fuel, plates, insurance, anything. They'd give me a call usually 48 hours in advance and ask if I wanted a load. I almost always said yes. They lost the milk contract because someone underbid them. One of the owners told me I could haul reefers to Sioux City, IA. Drop and hook, and working 5 days a week would pay the same as working 7. I said no because I can't back a trailer to save my life! Just got good enough to pass the test, and after that put myself in a position where I never had to back.

She said he would get up in the middle of the night and cook a full meal, eat it, then drink a 12 pack. Didn't remember it. The last time I took it I hallucinated really bad. Right in the toilet the next day. Same doctor had a patient that was on it. His wife couldn't find him in the middle of the night. She found him in the garage hanging by a noose. She was able to cut him down, and he survived, but he had brain damage by that point. He doesn't remember anything. These are NOT internet stories. I haven't cooked any Salmon, but I get Swordfish from Trader Joe's After defrosting it, I use a Lowrey's Sesame Ginger Marinade on it. I'll let it soak in for about a half hour or so and the wrap it tightly in foil with some of the Marinade. I place it on a baking sheet in the oven at 350 degrees F ...
TheGreatShadow replies on Dec 9, 2018:
Swordfish is good. It's kinna like salmon. It's not the easiest thing to get in Nebraska tho. I can't remember the last time I cooked it. I think I just did the old olive oil trick? But a marinade would take some of the dryness out of it. I'd buy it again, but it is spendy. Every once in a while you can get it here, and a lot of people around here have never heard of it. If I can find that, I'd opt for Mahi Mahi. No, it's not dolphin. Also sorry for your loss. :(

Lavergne comments on Dec 9, 2018:
I pretty much do the same thing you do - on the grill if the weather is good - or in the oven if its not. I do have a recipe for salmon poached in olive oil and herbs. Sounds a little weird but I did try it and it was very good. Salmon is one of those things that is good however you cook it ...
TheGreatShadow replies on Dec 9, 2018:
If you have the recipe for the olive oil/herb I'd like to try that. Sounds good. I've tried some citrus flavours before. Doesn't work well with salmon. It does do a decent job with talapia tho. For that I usually just add some butter. The salmon I was talking about wasn't undercooked. It was flat out RAW. Not cooked at all and served very cold. That was nasty. It was free and sent to my state room, so I didn't whine. Just don't like wasting food.

I cook the same way... Light dusting of salt and pepper... In a hot pan.. Finish off in the oven... Sometimes dredge in seasoned flour is good too
TheGreatShadow replies on Dec 9, 2018:
@Cutiebeauty Yeah I know there is a no sodium version (which is what I get). The regular stuff is fairly high in sodium. I don't eat TV dinners much (and for good reason). I just buy them when on sale, and if I'm in a hurry, or just hungry, I take one out of the freezer. I had one yesterday for supper. I looked at the box that was in the trash. 1190 MG of sodium. Pre-packaged crap usually has a lot of sodium and preservatives. I avoid them like the plague as well as fast food. Lots of this stuff needs to be sold in grams of sodium. I need to drink tons of water to try and flush it out. Otherwise sometimes I get light headed. Not good. When I buy chips, I make sure it says lightly salted or something to that effect. Otherwise you can make some easy chips at home without any sodium. Get a potato, cut into slices. Bake with only olive oil. Unless if you have very steady hands, it will be a lot thicker than your packaged chips (or be like me and use a food slicer). You can zap fry them too. But almost everything is better when you bake it. Unless if you are boiling water. lol

TheGreatShadow replies on Dec 9, 2018:
I don't add any sodium to anything. I have high blood pressure. Pepper might be good. I forgot to mention that if one is very lazy (or very hungry) you can zap fry it. But at over $1/oz I'll spend a little more time on prep. Otherwise I could just zap a tv dinner.

That reminds me of an article I read a few years ago. There was an English teacher (I think) that got a ticket for running a stop sign. His defence was that "stop" didn't specify what to do. I'm sure that it got thrown out. If you read the manual to get a license, I'm sure there is a legal definition of what the sign means (besides the obvious). If you pass the test, that means you understand the legal definition of signs. If this is some sort of law rather than a company sign, I bet it would be a similar story if he took it to court.

@mordant Yeah it is fun to dream about living in an exotic place. At least it'd be cool to say you lived there. You and I don't seem like the outdoresy type. I couldn't stand it. If you want to live that primitive, I'd move to Antarctica. I heard that there is one establishment (whatever you call it) there. It is so remote, and there are no laws of any type. No government. Like -100 or better. No thanks. Plus you mentioned cost. I understand what you mean about being a nomad. I myself was kind of one. Lived all over the US. I've talked to a few people that lived in Hawaii. Lots of people think it'd be cool to live there, but every one said that it's only cool to live in for 1-2 years. Cost of stuff is so high. Hell they can't even get decent meat for the most part! Down there it's Spam everything. My kid sis went there with my brother in law. Brought back Spam flavored macadamia nuts. Not joking.
