Are atheists a growing population?
ToakReon comments on Dec 23, 2017:
My understanding is that atheists are a growing proportion of the population in the western world, but that in other nations - notably strongly muslim nations - the combination of high birthrate and religious intollerance means that islam is the growing population there. Perhapse someone else has the figures?

These Evilgelicals and Hypo-Christians are really getting on my nerves.
ToakReon comments on Dec 23, 2017:
Evangelicals see 'proof' of god everywhere - even where the supposed proof actually doesn't fit the facts. Take hurricanes. According to the evangelicals, they are god's punishment for either being liberal or homosexual (or both, of course) - but guess what? They tend to hit south eastern, 'bible belt' states of the US ... so surely, if they are god's punishment, they are targetted at conservative, evangelical christians.

Does religion damage Self-Esteem?
ToakReon comments on Dec 23, 2017:
Absolutely. That is the whole PURPOSE of religion. "You're a FOUL SINNER!" "You don't DESERVE god's love!" "Grovel before the lord, so that he might take pity on you and forgive the endless multitude of sins that make you a verminous creature in his eyes!" "Nothing you do is good, for all good comes from god rather than you. Only your EVIL is your own - and you're not even capable of being bad without the inspiration of Satan! Talk about you being worthless and insignificant!" "Oh - and give us your money."

Why do people here hate Christmas?
ToakReon comments on Dec 23, 2017:

Loss of religion is a medical diagnoses wtf?
ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
Well - if you believe god is so 'obvious' that there is no valid possibility to doubt his existance, then you will conclude that doubting his existance must be the sign of a mental problem. It doesn't greatly surprise me that 'christian definitions of mental health' would have such concepts in them - it's just ridiculous that there ARE definitions of mental health that are faith based. As ridiculous, of course, as hurricanes being 'christian defined' as god's punishment for sin.

ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
Different religions have their 'commandments' - 10 or 42 - but just as you read through the ten commandments and think 'Some are OK, some are garbage, and lots have been left out', you do the same here. Oh - and in these 42 there are some silly 'almost repeats'.
Would you buy an electric car?
ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
Several years ago I started thinking about electric cars, and how I would personally design one myself. I thought about it over an extended period and came up with a concept that was not a hybrid (as they then were) but a fully electric car with a 'engine powered charger' that was not in any way directly connected to the wheels, neither was it directly connected to the throttle - it simply automatically 'fired up' if the battery voltage dropped below a specified value, and then ran at a fixed speed (chosen for maximum efficiency) until the battery voltage had been raised to a suitably higher, specified value. Nowadays something rather like my own concept has started to appear - called an 'e-rev' (extended-range electric vehicle). I would certainly concider an e-rev, if I could find one with basically the same idea behind it as I had those years ago.
If you could ask "god" just 2 questions, what would they be ?
ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
1. Why does a god who is so desperate to be loved, not appear before his worshippers so that they can love him? 2. Why does a god who declares 'thou shalt not kill' then encourage his followers to kill non-believers, homosexuals, women who are not virgins on their wedding night, and anyone who works on the sabbath? In short, god, why are you a HYPOCRITICAL CUNT!
According to this post, non theists have higher morals and values than non religious folks.
ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
These are statistics that 'look nice' and are interesting - but I personally don't have the greatest confidence in. In a society that is 'strongly religious', someone on the verge of incaceration in prison is not going to want to declare themselves 'unusual' by stating they are an atheist. They are not going to want to attract the extra attention that such a declaration would bring. Being a 'normal person' would be very tempting indeed, with all the other pressures of jail - and saying 'christian' on the odd form is very easy. So yes, it does look from the figures as if atheists are 'morally better' than theists - and they may be - but I suspect these figures are skewed in favour of that appearance by social pressure.
God said let us make man in our image. Who was he talking to?
ToakReon comments on Dec 22, 2017:
He was talking to himself - or would have been, if he had existed. In honour of this christians have talked to themselves ever since - they call it 'praying'.

Dating
ToakReon comments on Dec 21, 2017:
It would depend whether she was young and luscious, with never-ending legs, the figure of a goddess, hair like spun silk, a vibrant and engaging personality - and, of course, be a howling, erotically-depraved nymphomaniac. If the young lady had other 'plusses' I dare say I could forgive her the 'minus' of a bit of religious belief. Of course such a girl would have to be TOTALLY insane to choose an ugly old codger like me!
Anybody here raised as an Atheist!
ToakReon comments on Dec 21, 2017:
Sorry. Appologies in advance - but having tried to make a sensible response to this earlier I couldn't resist making a silly one now. The down side of having a juvenile and childish sense of humour, I guess. Have I been raised as an atheist? Yes - it happens dozens of times a day (possibly many more) - lifts ('elevators' in the US), escalators, whenever I travel in an aircraft, whenever my car reaches an uphill slope, even on occasion by my own muscle power as I stand or climb stairs. On all those occasions when I go upwards ot does not alter the fact that I am an atheist - so I am being 'raised as an atheist'. Of course I'm also 'let down as an atheist' a similar number of times and to a similar total extent - because my 'on-going altitude' does not alter greatly, long term. And I now finish off by apologising to the poor souls who've read this in disbelief, thinking 'this man's a complete IDIOT!' Yes, I am ... *grin*
Is "brutal honesty" unnecessary?
ToakReon comments on Dec 21, 2017:
If atheism has an 'aim' - and, to be honest, I'm not sure it's as simple as that - it's to persuade people to think and ask questions. In general, however, if you act like an aggressive cunt you'll get nowhere. The walls go up. 'He's an atheist ASSHOLE!' It's not universal - sometimes a little 'forcefulness' helps - but most of the time being a relaxed, pleasant, thinking, caring, calm individual works better. Think of the matter the other way around. Who is more likely to get the 'religious waverers' into a church? The charming, gracious young man/woman who drinks coffee, listens, shows concern, and softly quotes 'nice sections' of the bible? Or the howling street preacher bellowing, "Get thee into church, you fornicating sinners and foul offspring of demon seed, or you shall surely burn in torment forever in the deepest fire-pits of hell while Satan's laughter rings in your corrupt ears!"?
Anybody here raised as an Atheist!
ToakReon comments on Dec 21, 2017:

Is Islam more evil than other religions?

This is where I breathe a HUGE sigh of relief that I was born and brought up in Britain rather than bible-belt America. I have never suffered any form of discrimination or discomfort over my atheism. ToakReon comments on Dec 19, 2017:
I visit great churches, cathedrals and so on - purely for the architecture and the art. They might be built in honour of, and dedicated to, figments of deranged and irrational human imagination, but that doesn't stop them being astonishing and fascinating buildings. Do I treat them with 'respect'? Taking the hat off? Speaking in hushed tones? Not looking at a picture of Eve in the Garden of Eden and yelling, "Cor! That Eve's a cracker! I'd give 'er one!" ... Yes, I do. I don't believe what christians believe, but I have no wish to actively upset them. One of my biggest objections about christians is when they ram their religion down your throat - so I am not going to ram my atheism down their throat either. Yet 'bad energy'? There being 'something wrong'? No. Never felt that. A church is a building - no more. It has no more 'aura' about it than a warehouse, or a school, or a shop which sells pictures of Elton John. Not unless you, with your own imagination, create such an aura in the privacy of your own mind.

ToakReon comments on Dec 16, 2017:
No - as an atheist the 10 commandments are a set of rules that are based on a faith that you don't accept as a basis for morallity. Some of those commandments, however, make sense - such as 'Thou shalt not kill' - so yes, I agree with that one. 10 fallacies about atheists - have I missed any?
ToakReon comments on Dec 14, 2017:
There is another one - that atheists are waging a deliberate and vindictive war on religious people. Most atheist I know have no real problem with what people choose to believe - OK, we think they're dilusional and sometimes downright crazy, but heck, I'm a bit mad myself (in other ways). What atheists object to is religion BEING USED AGAINST PEOPLE. Religious zealots using religion to justify bigotry and injustice. Religion 'judging' people who have every right to be, and act, as they choose as long as they hurt no-one. Religious people believing their faith should grant them rights and privileges that society as a whole believes they shoyld not have - a classic case being religious individuals who believe they shiuld have a 'right' to discriminate against homosexuals vecause of their faith.

All the good in a christian's life comes from god. All the trouble and grief in a christians life comes from satan, or foul 'non-believers', of from the sinful christian himself. That keeps christians firmly in their place. As sinners who need god's blessing to avoid hell, they have to be GOOD little christians and grovel. And pay, of course - pay LOTS. But then you get this nonsense. A neighbour is a good man, and instead of seeing where the gratitude should properly lie, the christian insists on giving god credit for his neighbour's decency. It's like someone doing you a favour, and your response being, 'You've done that for me? Good. I'll just go and thank my dog.' The problem is that the truly religious don't even REALISE they're being arseholes.

What was the silliest theist argument you have ever heard?
ToakReon comments on Sep 10, 2017:
Let's be fair here. I'll offer the silliest arguments I've heard on BOTH sides of the theist/atheist argument. SILLY THEIST ARGUMENT The existance of god is proven by the existance if ... (wait for it!) ... THE BANANA. It is a fruit 'designed for human consumption' by god. This is PROVEN by the fact that it comes individually 'wrapped' in a skin, complete with 'opening tab' at one end. Furthermore the diameter of a banana is perfect for the human hand, and it's curvature means it can be alligned to the human mouth easily when held on a normal, relaxed grip. What more evidence do you need for the proof of god? SILLIEST ATHEIST ARGUMENT If god exists then all creatures are god's creatures - including birds. If this is so, then when birds fly upqards they will be filled with joy at getting closer to god's heaven. By similar argument, as they descend, their hearts will be filled with despair. Yet if their hearts are filled with despair, how can they sing joyful songs? The non-existance of god is therefore proven by the fact that birds can sing at ground level.

There are tollerant christians - but fundamentally atheism is a challenge to the beliefs of theists, so theists may tollerate atheists but that's about as good as it gets. That said, what I object to is not religion as such - but the evils committed in the name of religion and god. If a theist is not being an arsehole, there is no need for religion to have any bearing.
When did you first doubt religion?

ToakReon comments on Sep 10, 2017:
With care. You have to accept that an atheist and a theist will have fundamental differences, which might cause tension.
What does the word 'atheism' mean to you?
ToakReon comments on Sep 10, 2017:
A (meaning 'not') theist (meaning 'person who believes in an interactive, supernatural being). If you do not believe in an interactive god, you are an atheist.
