30 some years ago, I went to a Halloween party for singles at one of the member's house. When I got there, I saw about 15 men and NO women. After an hour, one lady showed up, but after seeing the extreme imbalance, she left about 20 minutes later (basically, as soon as she could manage an exit).
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 10, 2022:
@racocn8 That's a whole new, disgusting version of the term "rat race". Very good analogy for the dating and mating game with many humans. While there is plenty of bad behavior by women in the dating game, such as lying, manipulation, gold-digging, etc., there are also plenty of men who are just out there in the game for the ego trip and scoring as many conquests as they can, etc. But they tend to be a relatively small % of men, because most women will only sleep with them if they have a lot of money or are 8s or 9s in looks. And not that big a % of men fall into either group, compared to how many women of any level of looks, are capable of the bad behaviors I listed above. So there is little evidence to support men as being worse or more commonly, badly behaved in the dating and mating game.

TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 10, 2022:
@MichelleGar1 Well, for me Zoosk is a shitshow because of the tech level and tech savvy they require, but I've heard Match and the others have just as much of the bullshit and bad behavior by both genders of members on the sites. As far as online dating being harder than organic, offline meeting of compatible singles, I would say yes and no about it. Organic offline dating may offer more protection against safety risks, esp. for women, than online dating, but even still, some people can fool even your friends and acquaintances from being able to effectively screen for you who is compatible or even safe and sane, if the person is a charming, smooth sociopath. As far as online dating, the difficulty in that, esp. for men, who have way more competition than most women on dating sites, at least in the US, is that in organic dating, meeting singles offline thru social networks or events, a person only has to meet the other single person's basic, minimum standards of compatibility, and vice versa. In online dating, each person must not only meet those for the other person, but they must also "win" or be chosen, against all the other competition on the dating site at that time, in order for them to actually get to begin dating and keep dating the other person steadily. In other words, with online dating, being compatible, but not the top prospect, is close, but not good enough, in that game...

TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 9, 2022:
@racocn8 It is ridiculous, and very humiliating, at least for the men, if not for some of the women, being so openly "fought over" by the men there. But then again, there were no doubt some women who got off on it and enjoyed an ego trip by being competed for and having so much male attention. I have long thought that this sort of thing also goes on with online dating, that there are some women with insecure egos and a huge appetite for male attention and ego strokes, that go on dating sites, with no real interest or desire to actually date or find a partner, but just to soak in all the male attention and interest from men messaging them and maybe even meeting them, but then not end up dating any of them, just wanting to feel wanted and desireable. So before I get the usual bashing about how there must be men doing the same thing, I will make the usual, obvious unneeded disclaimer: It goes both ways, we all know that. But I will also say that it's also pretty clear that this likely happens way more often by women on dating sites than by men, if for no other reason that on dating sites, men do almost all the sending of first messages and the pursuing, while women sit back and let the men message them first. So it makes no logical sense that a man would bother to put in all that work, time and effort to message tons of women, just to get some ego stroke and attention. And if they did, they would need lots of free time, that could probably be used way more efficiently by just going to the gym or some public place, to get some quick female attention from the women admiring their looks.

Another thing, Howard, about five years ago, right after my late wife died, when I was finally in a position to start dating again, the local Unitarian church's singles group, which would have been the logical best place for me to start finding compatible women to date, disbanded. Talk about lousy timing for me! But it wouldn't have helped me anyway, as I found out from the woman my age who was single and the leader of the group. She told me the reason it disbanded is because it was almost all men by that time and that, in my age group of women that were members of the group, 50 to 70 years old or so, none of the single women in the church had any interest in dating, they were all choosing to go it alone and stay single. I think that trend is very common or prevalent these days among women in that age group, compared to men in that age group, and it is not going to ever change for the better, at least not towards getting any better for men wanting to find a partner.

TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 9, 2022:
@Sierra4 Heard about it, haven't tried it. I think this trend of lopsided gender ratios probably is present in about all the dating sites and apps, at least for my local area, if not across the country. I think most of us saw the study posted here on Agnostic, saying that 62% of the singles on dating sites in America are men, so that is a 2 to 1 ratio already, and then it will be much worse in certain geo areas. As a side note, I tried to use Zoosk today, and it was a disaster. My laptop and browser are probably too old for their site and when I kept trying to sign up or log in using FB or Google, it kept being rejected. Match is much simpler and user friendly for older, tech-retarded people like me. I called Zoosk's tech support and they said I would need to have a friend help me set up an account with them, because it would take too much time for them to help me on the phone, and then call them back again to purchase a membership. Too much fucking work and trouble for me to bother with, altho it does appear their membership fees are significantly less than Match, but who knows what their membership numbers are for my local area and what the gender ratios are? I have no way of knowing until I set up and account and browse. It's such shit that all dating sites require you to set up an account, and usually a profile, before you can even browse the profiles in you local area.

TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 9, 2022:
I think it has gotten to that point with online dating sites, that most of them have way more men on them than women, at least in my age group and in my area. And nothing will be done about it by Match or any other dating site, no matter how much I complain to their customer care staff, because they don't make money by actually helping people find partners and quit needing their services. All they care about is maintaining enough public credibility and antectdotal success stories for people to keep signing up and paying for memberships. They could easily do things to make the gender ratios more balanced, like advertising more for their sites on venues or platforms that appeal to women, like TV shows mainly watched by women, but they have no incentive to spend money on doing that, as long as enough people keep paying for memberships and signing up, be they male or female. Really sucks and makes me justifiably angry with their greed and indifference to the plight of their male members. As to your Halloween singles party experience, I went to a singles dance a few years ago, and, while there were seemingly more women there than men, it was still a disaster, as about all the women there were attending in groups, maybe for moral support or whatever, so they all knew each other from attending the same church's divorce support group, or otherwise a church singles group, etc.. Anyway, few of them seemed at all attractive looking to me (and my standards are not that high, a 5 or 6 on the ten scale would be fine for me), and it also appeared that most of them were not that excited about or interested in meeting men for dating. It seemed like most of them were along for the ride to spend time with the other women and just get a night out with female company and dance. BTW, I have also checked out the local dance club that is favored by single women my age, and it's the same way, mostly women who are just there to dance and hang with their friends, not really interested in meeting men there to date, contrary to all the conventional wisdom about Boomer age women and dance clubs.. The few women I talked to at the singles dance, also confirmed my suspicions about how mismatched I was with them as far as being compatible dating partners, as they all were members of Christian or Catholic churches, and much more mainstream and traditional than me on lifestyle and culture, same as what I encounter all the time on Match: Being very family and kid-oriented, into country music big time, politically conservative, big social drinkers, moderately or more religious and not willing to date a non-believer, etc.

@WilliamCharles That choice was clearly made by Trump and his cronies in the government. The only ? is if it will ever be proven in court and will he ever see prison over it. In the meantime, I would love to see some lawsuits against him by capital police officers who suffered because of him, because I have no faith the Dems will have the balls to actually get him punished for it. But in civil court, those officers might have a very good case against him if anybody in his circle ends up willing to talk.

@FvckY0u I'm an extremely skilled and careful driver, hence my having had a CDL and never having any accidents outside of in parking lots during my whole driving career, personal and on the jobs. So, regarding your insurance ?, I still carry a normal amount of insurance for my home and car, because things can always happen, even if it's someone else's fault, no matter how careful you are. I do drop collision insurance on my cars after they are ten years old, simply because by that time their worth is usually low enough to not be worth the money of repairing them after an accident. However, with the cost of used cars now, it might be worth adjusting that. I consider it simply being smart and sensible, regardless of what the government requires for car owners, or not. I know as soon as I begin hearing of right wing groups beginning to hunt average lefties, who aren't even elected pols, I will be arming myself and preparing to fight them if they come after me, regardless of the cost for buying a gun, ammo, and learning to shoot. That would simply be sensible spending to defend myself against a very plausible threat and not saving money in the foolish, naive belief that the cops would protect me.

Same as 9-11, there were people in the fed govt. that knew it was coming and did nothing to stop it, because all the way to Bush and Cheney, the attack served their purposes, both in providing a reason to invade Iraq and get their oil, as well as to boost W.'s image and power after the country rallied around him. As far as the article's points on support for right wing extremism in law enforcement's ranks, no surprise there, it's been that way for decades. Which is why if the expected civil war comes in in few years or less, started by right wing groups, I know that my side will be entirely on our own, with no protection or help from the cops. So we may as well buy our own guns, learn to shoot and prepare to defend ourselves once it becomes clear the war is about to begin.

TomMcGiverin replies on Oct 26, 2022:
It goes both ways, like everything. I have shared on these boards recently about running across several women on Match who were closet Trumpers or conservatives, but listed themselves on their profiles as Independent or Moderate for their political affiliation. Why they bothered replying to my message, after seeing my profile and that I was a Bernie supporter, is beyond me. But I think the reason they hid their real political position was to be able to get a foot in the door for dating guys that might not care about their politics if the woman was attractive and compatible enough for the guy otherwise. Didn't fool me tho, once I either began trading messages with them or met them in person for coffee. They rejected me and I rejected them, for whatever reasons, but I'm sure politics was probably part of it, for both them and me. My other two dealbreakers, on my end, besides someone being a conservative or Trumper, is being a daily smoker, or a big fan of country music. But that last one is because music is so important to me, as well as the fact that most country music fans also tend to be very different from me culturally, so there's usually other incompatibilities that come with that musical difference in other cultural areas, like what movies they would like, them wanting to fish and camp, etc.. I can also be ok with dating someone who is moderately or mildly religious, as long as they can accept my Agnosticism, but that last part almost never happens on the part of women who are moderately religious, and with women who are strongly religious, it's almost always a dealbreaker on either their part or mine.

It would be a cakewalk for Dems, if they willing to embrace policies that are proven winners by polling, like lowering health care costs, providing M4All, etc. and other lefty populist policies, but they never will, at least not sincerely, because it would anger their corporate donors. So they go on, election after election, trying to squeeze out, or not, a tiny marginal victory by basically saying, " We're not them!", and playing entirely to political theater, ID politics, and culture war issues. By now most Americans have seen this game long enough and either don't buy it or just give up on voting... Leaving all the populist positions to the Repubs, is not a winning strategy, but winning fed elections has not been a Dem priority ever since Clinton won in 1992.

TomMcGiverin replies on Oct 23, 2022:
@DenoPenno I guess we are different in that respect. I really miss traveling since my late wife got ill, and would love to start doing that again with a partner. As for partying, I never did that much since I was in my 20s, and don't miss it at all either, same as you. But as a non-drinker, no matter how open-minded and tolerant I am about dating a moderate drinker, it seems like very few women who are social or moderate drinkers are ok with dating any non-drinker, no matter what my mindset, because social drinking is the center of their social life with friends and family, and I would not "fit in" well enough for that, even tho they would have a built in DD with me. So, nothing I can do, because so many women in my dating pool have lots more men to choose from besides me, that are more mainstream in culture and lifestyle, and check every box in their rigid, narrow, stupid long list of traits that have nothing to do with what is in someone's heart, their relationship track record, their relationship skills, and their communication skills, all of which are my strong suits in what I can offer a partner, but that matter very little to most women in my dating pool, who are divorced and have never gotten any therapy. So they keep repeating the same poor choices in who they date and instead blame all of it on the men they choose, rather than getting therapy or looking at their own poor choices and their even poorer criteria for choosing a dating partner.. I would be willing to even try LD dating with someone who lived in Minneapolis or Chicago, even, but it's not worth even bothering to look into, again, after exploring it a few years ago, because it would be a dead end. The women in those two cities, or anywhere else that far away that might have some things to do where they live, are not interested in dating LD, or ever moving to my area, so what's the point in even looking into that? Anybody living in a better place than Des Moines, like Minneapolis or Chicago, usually already has family and friends they don't want to leave behind, same as my friends I have here, and even if they are retired like me or soon to retire, why would they want to move away from a better place to live like there, to live in a place like Des Moines, which is not as good? The answer is, they won't, because single women my age are usually not as interested as men are in making sacrifices just to add a partner relationship to their lives, esp. if they already have good relationships where they live with family and friends. And I am not willing to risk moving away from all my local friends, who are my only real family or support system. So I am just as stuck as you are, with my local online dating pool as the only way to find another partner.

I agree with you that there are good people out there in every online dating pool, even in a limited geo area of, say, 60 miles or less. But the thing is, online dating is also competitive, and in my case, for example, there are over 3 men for every woman that is in my age range and local distance limit of 60 miles, in my local Match dating pool. So, finding a partner means not only finding someone compatible on paper, in the local online dating pool, but also winning the competition between me and the other men in my age group that share that local geo dating pool on the dating site. Organic dating is way easier and less competitive, because in that sphere, all you have to do is meet someone while they are available and interested in dating, and if you meet their minimum compatibility requirements, and vice versa, you are on your way to dating them steadily. In online dating, you need to not only meet those things, but also end up being chosen by them over all the competition, and vice versa, so it's a wonder that anybody who is average looking is able to ever find a partner who is at least average looking, because all of the variables would seem to work against that happening. Since research studies have shown that both men and women seem to put all of their interest and effort into only trying to online date those who are better than average looking. So average looking men, who make up the majority of online dating singles, are pretty much out of luck against the guys who are 7s, 8s, and 9s in looks, because even the average looking women, who are the minority gender on dating sites, about one third, put about all their interest in the great looking guys.

I just leave. I don't need to hear crap music.
TomMcGiverin replies on Oct 15, 2022:
I don't agree with you about that song being crap music, but I do share your attitude. I feel that about all country music is crap, so I do just walk away and leave, whenever I can, from staying and hearing that music. The only place I have to just about always stay and put up with it, is at karaoke shows. Tho sometimes, I just get so fed up after an hour or two, that I just leave, instead of staying there just to sing some more, because I have reached my limit on country music for that night. Lucky for you, you live in New Orleans, so you probably have to put up with way less country music there than I do here... assuming you feel the same as I do about country music.

TomMcGiverin replies on Oct 15, 2022:
@rainmanjr Suit yourself, we'll have to disagree on this. This issue is one area where I actually believe in picking my battles, politically, and letting something slide, in the interest of getting action on other things that are more important to me.

@rainmanjr It bothers me too, but it is what it is, that's the practical reality, as least for now. I am quite willing to put up with it in pols, as long as they work for the right policies that we need and benefit the masses, rather than the 1%.

TomMcGiverin replies on Oct 15, 2022:
@rainmanjr The sad, practical fact, is that any elected office that is high enough to have actual, real campaigns, in which the candidate is asked about religion, requires, in America, that the candidate at least claim to be religious in some way, Christian, Catholic or whatever. Because in America almost nowhere can a candidate for a higher office get away with being openly Agnostic or Atheist, or even claim to be non-religious. For example, it seems very obvious to me, after following Bernie Sander for years in the news and even hearing him speak in person several times, that he is a cultural Jew, but most likely an Atheist or Agnostic, certainly not religious or a believer in any religion, but he has always coyly avoided identifying himself as non-religious or a non-believer, because he knows it would be political poison for him if he ever ran for president, even more than his label of being a democratic socialist.
