TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 4, 2022:
You also don't list alternative rock, which is quite different than most mainstream rock or classic rock, so your poll really doesn't give me an option that represents my true tastes. You also don't list country, but I've got a feeling that country is probably about the least popular genre among members here, mainly because of how religious it is, along with how politically and culturally conservative it is.

50 and 60 bring on even more changes.
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 3, 2022:
Older age and body changes didn't happen quite that fast or drastically, at least for me, but the point is taken and does apply. The real milestone was age 45, where my body started to hurt and bother me too much to keep playing full court basketball anymore. And because of that, by age 50, I had lost my flat belly for the first time ever, never to return.

So true on both counts. I have met so many tech people that are inevitably conservatives or Libertarians, because they have never studied any liberal arts or humanities courses, so they know nothing of history, economics, sociology, poli sci, philosophy, etc, and think there is a technical solution to everything, so they vote for technocrat and fascist leaders. And they totally think that money is everything and that the strong should be able to run over the weak and everybody else, same as the rich over everybody else. And they love dog eat dog competition, since they were always the smartest kids in school, so they are glad to work for corporations that exploit most of them, because their kind would never join any unions in their industry, since individualism reigns supreme with them. Yes, they are a curse on our society when it comes to politics and the atomizing of our society.

Why So Many Spiritual People Refuse To Call Themselves 'Religious' | John Cappello | YourTango
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 2, 2022:
The online dating sites recognize this and Match has the religious affiliation category, along with Christian, Catholic, etc. of Spiritual, but not religious as one of the label choices for members to use for themselves. I use it because, frankly, where I live, being labeled Agnostic is not only seen as a red flag by most women who grew up here, even if they are not very religious, but most people where I live are too ignorant to even know what the label Agnostic means. So I cop out and use the first label simply to avoid outright rejection and give myself a chance to get my foot in the door, so to speak, and allow myself to be considered and for the woman to get a chance to get to know me more before springing the label Agnostic on her during either the messaging phase or the first in person meeting. I have found that if I delay it like that, most women are ok with the Agnostic label by then, tho some aren't. If the woman is only moderately religious, they usually are not put off by the label Agnostic later on, but if they are strongly religious, and are hiding that in their profile, they end up rejecting me anyway, every time.
I love this!
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 1, 2022:
That is so true, it's all about supply, demand and location. Unfortunately, I live in a shitty, mismatched dating pool for me, where guys with my traits and type have a very low supply of women who are compatible, and thus, little demand for my type around here in the dating game. Which leaves me with only two other options, neither of which are really viable or worth the trouble, moving away to a better dating pool, like Chicago or Minneapolis (and leaving behind my local friends which are my only support system), or dating long distance, which I have looked into in the past and nobody I connected with was interested in doing that with me. So, I am stuck with being the 50 cent bottle of water that sits on the shelf past its expiration date... But I bet if I had above average looks, instead of average looks, more women would overlook my offbeat traits and be willing to date me. Same if I had more money and wanted to play Sugar Daddy, which I would never do. But that is the reality of the dating game, if you don't have great looks, won't be or can't be a Sugar Daddy, and are mismatched on traits with the vast majority of your local dating pool. You are the drink that is an unpopular flavor and not cheap enough to compete with the more popular flavors on the local market. It also doesn't help that I have three guys for every woman in my local dating pool, that are in my age range. I have done the test for this three times where I used the library's computers to set up a dummy female profile and run a search of men that matched the traits I am seeking in a woman, that are compatible with my traits in my profile. So what are we supposed to do, Chicago gal that is the OP here? Move to another, better dating pool? Waste our time trying to date LD? Or just sit on the shelf waiting to expire and die alone?

His son was the president of the company and it was an open secret that many of the guys he hired there were in the country illegally. And this was after years earlier, the company had layed off or fired most of its workers here, and outsourced almost all of its production work to Taiwan. I guess for Repub business owners, you can never cut costs enough, or get cheap enough labor to make you happy with your profits....

I would also add that 2 or 3 conglomerates control almost all of the dating sites and apps., so no wonder the products and services keep getting shittier all the time, while the prices keep going up. They don't give a shit at all about helping people actually connect and find compatible partners, they just care about raking in as much money as possible... That is the American way of business these days, buy or eliminate your competition, then make your product or service as cheap as possible for you, since you have no real competition, then raise the prices all you want, because you can and your customers have no where else to go that is better or cheaper.

Gotta love Texas, where they love their guns and both people on the right and the left are usually packing heat... To me, the one good thing about it is that with the queer folks on the left packing guns, the cops are way less likely to risk brutalizing them the way they did with the unarmed BLM protesters. Armed protesters are more likely to keep the cops honest about how they deal with them... Esp. after seeing how chickenshit and cowardly the cops were in that school shooting down there.

The 14 months of Covid where I was pretty much sheltering at home were very tough and lonely for me, but I never blamed the rest of the world for it, and did my best to adjust to it. I coped by making a lot of phone calls to friends who were going thru the same thing, reading a lot, borrowing books from the library, watching a lot of TV, surfing the net, and visiting Agnostic a lot, as back then there were a lot more active members. Then, after I was finally able to get vaxed, I started getting back out there to enjoy karaoke, live bands, movies, and, finally, live theater again. I resolved to start living my life again as normally as possible once vaxed and I am determined to keep doing so, as long as being vaxed and boosted protects me from serious illness and death. The only things I am holding back on are commercial air travel and out of the country travel.

That is why liberalism no longer has any credibility with average Americans and neither does the Dem Party, because neither one deserves it. And that is how the white working class, after being overwhelmingly loyal to the Dems historically, was driven into the arms of the Repub Party.

Most Americans are idiots who politically identify with who they admire or aspire to be, even if it's a delusion in thinking that they are or will ever be a member of that club, so they keep voting and politically allying against their own economic interests. If most Americans ever heard George Carlin's rants about the club they are not in, and never will be in, and believed him, we would have much better politics here. The Lucy and Charlie cartoon here is like Trickle Down economics, a myth spread by the rich for their benefit and the fleecing of everybody else, but it works because most of those being fleeced buy into it.

All those Dems care about is campaign donations of corporate cash, keeping their jobs and perks, while posturing about identity politics and culture war stuff that has no real effect in improving the lives of most average Americans. Which is why so many average Americans have caught onto both major parties and no longer vote in federal elections. In fact, the non-voters outnumber the number of voters who voted for Biden as well as those who voted for Trump. In any other country, that would be seen as a vote of No Confidence for either party.

Iowa human trafficking victim Pieper Lewis sentenced, ordered to pay $150,000 : NPR
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 14, 2022:
In the interest of fairness and accuracy, I wanted to share that I saw the story of this case on the front page of the statewide newspaper, The Des Moines Register today. I figured this site's members would be interested in knowing that racism apparently was not an issue in her sentencing. The judge was a black male, same race as her. Sounds like she maybe could have had better legal representation and not settled for the plea bargain that took away her affirmative defense for the stabbing and murder. But that could easily have ended up with a conviction, where a long prison sentence would have been certain. I do hope this troubled young woman does take this opportunity of the fundraising paying her restitution to finally get her head straight and make something positive out of her life. She has clearly suffered greatly and also made some bad choices, along with developing some behavior issues. I think the restitution was excessive, but it's now a moot point. The future is all up to her. I hope she completes her probation and gets into some programs for her issues and learns some job and life skills as well during her probation.

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 14, 2022:
Nice that the establishment did the right thing, since my experience with bars that I go to for karaoke, never seem to do that when someone harasses me for no good reason. But in your case, you had a whole group there that the guy harassed, unlike my experiences where it was more one on one, so they probably figured it was worth bouncing him in order to keep your group coming back. I call that bar economics or bar injustice, where it's not about behavior, but about numbers of each party involved, that determines what, if anything, the bar does after a conflict occurs. In this case, the guy was clearly a nutcase, rather than some regular drunken asshole like I encounter at bars, so hopefully the place will bar him for good with the police call, and if he shows up there again, he will be charged with trespassing and violating a no-contact order they got against him after the police call. I'm like you, in that I enjoy screwing with the heads of religious nuts, but I have begun to realize, like Betty said, that it's probably not worth the risk now that right wingers feel so emboldened to act violently towards us and that you never know which of them might have guns at home or in their vehicle, even if they are unarmed when you encounter them.If we were a sane and civilized country with gun control, the risk from these people would be a lot less, but we aren't and it isn't.

Because communism has already become fairly discredited, I would much rather see a debate in which one side argues for democratic socialism, which has been successfully practiced in many countries, and the other side attempt to argue in favor of American capitalism, which in practice is actually a plutocracy for government and neoliberalsim and unchecked capitalism for its economic policies. The argument that societies have only two choices, capitalism and communism or some other totalitarian form of government, is a false one. Socialism has been given a bad name because if its critics constantly lumping it in with communism, falsely and bringing up the boogeymen of Mao and Stalin... It's bullshit that her lawyer is even having to make the appeal for a reduced sentence solely on grounds of mercy for her medical condition and pregnancy, rather than just on the obvious unfairness of the original sentence and the original charge against her. She was no threat to anyone, unlike the insurrectionists. Typical American justice, one standard for colored defendants and left wing protesters, and another one for whites who are right wing protesters or terrorists, unless the latter group actually kill or shoot somebody that is law enforcement, then they get the book thrown at them... Unless they kill or shoot law enforcement, they always get the kid gloves treatment, since the cops and prosecutors are usually politically allied or at least sympathetic to them.... The story give no details about the sentencing judge, but I have little doubt that he was likely a conservative white man, probably racist, who wanted to put this black woman in her place...

So terribly sad the guilt this innocent man has borne.
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 11, 2022:
He has no reason to feel guilt. The real guilt and blame belong to Cheney and maybe also W., as well as all those in the intelligence community who I have no doubt at least knew 9-11 was going to happen and let it happen, all so Cheney could have his war with Iraq and get their oil, as well as provide the excuse for the War On Terror, the Patriot Act, and other policies to take away our freedoms, civil liberties, and rights to dissent. An added bonus was that 9-11 allowed W. to suddenly rocket in popularity and stature as the country predictably rallied around him and he went from looking like a doofus to a Churchill-like statesman. I'm a pretty cynical person, but even I don't want to think the Cheney and some of his allies in the intelligence community were actively, instead of passively involved in the attack on that day, but either way, it was obvious the government was involved in the demolition and collapse of Building 7 at the World Trade Center, so they knew something was going to happen and were ready that day to work with it to serve their ends.

Your experience is by no means unique. I have run across the profiles of several really hot looking, college educated white professional career women on Match, who only wanted to date black men who were less educated than them, high school level only, for what was obviously just a casual, sex-based relationship, if you can call it that, or dating. It's not hard to figure out where these women's heads were at, maybe some sort of fantasy about black studs, etc. Needless to say, I never messaged any of them after seeing their profile, as I'm not their type or the race they wanted, to each their own.....

Is this site and group the best approach to a dating site?
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 10, 2022:
Not sure how to answer your ? This site was originally intended to be a dating site, but that never really came to feasibility. The site never reached the critical mass number of members needed to offer local dating options for more than a very small group of members. Since then, the site has lost the vast majority of members that joined in the last several years. As for finding people here that are interested in poly relationships, I would say the odds are even more uphill than for finding people interested in mono relationships. Rotsa ruck... I like the format of this site for being able to get to know people more deeply and gradually than in other dating sites, where the process is more brief and superficial than here, and would prefer this to the regular paid membership dating sites, but since this site offers no local dating options for me, and never has, since I joined several years ago, it's either Match or nothing for me as far as ever meeting someone to date. And even Match has become a worse site over the last couple years, as is probably the case with all paid dating sites, since they have no real competition and have no incentive to improve their quality and services. It appears that all of them, except E-Harmony maybe, keep making their profile formats worse and more limited, so their usefulness in finding compatible matches keeps getting worse. But the prices keep going up. That's what happens when companies have no real competition, enjoy monopoly power in their industry and have no government regulation either. And the dating sites really have no incentive to help their members successfully find long term compatible matches, as they make more money from keeping you single and a paying member for years and years. So they will, as long as most singles continue to have hope that by remaining a paying member, their ship will come in eventually and as long as the dating sites have enough anecdotal success stories among the public to continue to seem legitimate as a way to meet a partner.
Doesn't this just sound about right?

Met another woman last night who labeled herself as Independent on her profile. She rejected me, mainly on not being outdoorsy enough to match her, which I think was probably honest and legit, but what struck me as weird, in hindsight, is that my profile info should have made it pretty clear that I'm not as outdoorsy as most people, so why did she reply to my first message and agree to meet me in the first place? It was obvious once we started talking about politics last night in our meeting, which she doesn't like to discuss, that she is very conservative on the economic issues, with the usual mindset that most poor people made bad choices, deserve to suffer for it, and don't deserve much help from the government or society. I learned this from her bringing up the issue of student debt relief and she had no response when I heard her out, and then brought up the counter arguments of how a highly educated general population is a social and societal good that would improve our politics, government and society, as well as the contrast and lack of justice, fairness, and equality in how corporations receive all kinds of undeserved and unneeded welfare from the govt., same with the military budget, and finally how businesses were all bailed out with Covid relief along with the Wall Street banks that made bad bets and fraudulent loans in the Great Recession and they were not seen as undeserving. She had no answer and changed the subject, but I had already knew we were politically incompatible and just wanted to maybe get her to learn something about her selective standards for who is worth and deserving and who isn't, regarding government help.

Whites becoming even more of a racial minority is not a concern for these theocratic, racist fascist nationalists, because, under a totalitarian, fascist government, a minority group can still control the majority oppressed group or groups thru sheer force of the iron fist. Ever hear of South Africa? It's not something that is easy to maintain forever, but it's something that can be implemented, and don't think the Repubs and their white Christian nationalists allies are unwilling to take power, thru elections or civil war, and go for it.

I think public shaming has its place and some constructive uses. Our modern culture and society might benefit some from having it partially returned to more frequent use, at least on the powerful, rich, and famous... Most of America is way too enamoured of the rich, famous, and powerful, who tend to be some of our worst people. All because, in many cases, becoming one of those three groups requires a certain moral flexibility, shall we say, that I find disgusting and shameful.
Physical Attraction
TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 9, 2022:
I am gratified to see the fairly even split of votes, because it doesn't surprise me much in my online dating experience. The numbers finally seem to add up and make sense. Let me explain. Almost all the women I have connected with on Match, tho they are only a small subset of the total population in my local online dating pool, tell me that almost all the guys they encounter on Match seem to be only interested in sex rather than actual long term relationships. But at the same time, over 85% of the women in my local dating pool, even tho I am very selective about who I message and reach out to in the first place, reject me without ever replying to me. What I infer from that, for what it's worth, is that there are also plenty of women in my local dating pool who are glad to also, like all the men I keep hearing about, go ahead and date someone otherwise incompatible if they are hot enough looking and the sex is great. Because so many women are rejecting me, due to looks or maybe also or instead feeling I'm not compatible, even tho they seem to be compatible on paper, otherwise I wouldn't have messaged them in the first place. So looks and dating just for sex, seem to be the unspoken factors, at least in my experience, of who gets chosen for dating, rather than it being mostly or always based on compatibility traits that show up on paper and in profiles, so to speak. And it goes both ways with each gender. Which is what people have been saying for years on this site as well as what the research has shown. Looks matter way more than most people are willing to admit in their dating choices, except maybe in polls like this, where people are willing to privately admit what their priorities are in dating and partner selection. I have no doubt that, in spite of how mismatched I am on paper with the local dating pool, on traits like religion, kids situation, drinking habits and hating country music, that if I still had a full head of hair and an athletic body, my response rate to my first messages would be a lot higher than the 10-15% that it is..... even with the fact that in my dating pool, the ratio of men to women is almost 3 to 1. And it is also obvious with online dating, including with my choices, that the first factor people use in narrowing their choices for who to connect with, is how attractive the photos look, and then moving on from there to see how compatible the rest of the profile appears to be, on paper, so to speak.

Sorry, not sorry... Sex is not important enough to me to date someone whose values are diametrically opposed to mine, and, while sexual attraction is important to me in choosing who to date, it's never been enough for me to keep seeing someone that I am otherwise not compatible with and who does not share my values. I won't even maintain a friendship with someone whose values are extremely oppositional to mine.
