Nah, why brand yourself instantly as an idiot? There were a couple idiots at my local senior center that would wear theirs to lunch there. One of them still does, the other guy's wife got sick, so he (thankfully) hasn't been there for several months. I guess it's probably more convenient when they wear them so you know who they are, instead of wondering which people are private Trumpers, but I still find the MAGA hats really offensive and am tired of seeing the same idiots wearing them.

@xenoview Suit yourself, and you're entitled to your opinion. We all have to make money some way, whether it's stealing, selling drugs, working a straight job, or stripping for porn hub. I don't judge what others do for money, as long as it's legal and doesn't screw other people over to make it. Personally, I have more respect for the woman on Porn Hub than some soulless piece of yuppie scum working on Wall Street ripping off other people and ruining companies, for example. Or some member of congress who gets rich off their legalized bribery of corporate campaign money, followed by working as a lobbyist for the people they whored for in office. The latter two examples are legal ways of earning money, but I don't think they should be legal, that's all.

TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 11, 2022:
@linxminx Exactly right. The ones leading our politics and our corporations are the ones who sold out the younger generations, not me. At the same time, the majority of Boomers did vote for Reagan and other members of congress and presidents of both parties that sold them out, but not me individually. I always voted for the most progressive candidates I could find and I also did my best to promote progressive or socialist policies. I did my best but was simply way out-numbered. So they have reason to hate and blame my generation as a whole, but I will not put up with being individually or personally blamed or insulted for being a Boomer by Millenials or Gen Z members who don't know me from a hole in the ground. I don't insult or put them down for their generational membership, as I know nothing about them individually, and just want them to return the favor.

@TheoryNumber3 I wish I were wrong. I usually regret being right about things these days. I can relate, more than you might think. I am willing to date women as much as 8 years older than me, provided they are in good health, but even with that kind of flexibility on my part, I have little success in the online dating game, since I match up so poorly with the local dating pool by not having kids, not being religious, and not drinking. Add to that the fact that I hate country music and won't date a conservative, and it makes me fairly undateable for my local pool.

@TheoryNumber3 That is quite true. The older you get, the worse the dating pool gets on those sites. A widowed friend of mine has really seen that. I've been on Match for over three years, and yes, there are a lot of obvious scammers, but in my experience the vast majority of profiles are from real women in my local area. The problem is, tho, that most of them seem to be pretty dysfunctional or incredibly rigid and demanding about who they will date. And to be honest, a good third of them are not at all attractive to me, either because they are very overweight, or have the lined, hard faces of someone who either spent their life drinking too much or being in the sun all the time without sunblock. Finally, a lot of the profiles are of women who have likely been inactive for at least a year or two. I have often heard that dating sites will keep your profile on there for up to three years after you have stopped using the site, just so they can appear to boost their membership numbers.

@FvckY0u I sadly think you're right. After that, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the billionaires are able to emerge from their bunkers and survive on some level above the surface, but then again, even they may never be able to live above ground again. If they do emerge, it will be to start some new form of feudalism between them and their surviving servants. What the current group of bought and paid for pols in DC don't realize, is that after the shit hits the fan and civil war erupts, a lot of them are going to get slaughtered by the mobs, along with a lot of folks like us, and their money and status won't be enough to protect them. They will no longer be necessary anyway as the middlemen between the masses and the ruling class, once elections and open government are gone.

TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 9, 2022:
@FvckY0u We have only had radical change in the US, since the civil war, during two or three time periods. The first was the Progressive Era, when Teddy Roosevelt was president and there were many new immigrants to the country, including many socialists. The establishment major parties were afraid of the socialists and their growing popularity, so they allowed many progressive reforms early in the last century for a short time. The next major period was the Great Depression. There were tens of millions of Americans that were ready to vote for socialist candidates, including for president, capitalism was no longer credible or popular, and there were violent uprisings all across the country. So the ruling class allowed FDR and the Dems, at least for a while, to implement socialist policies to prevent violent revolution. Same thing with the sixties, the threat of violent revolution, from violent groups like the Weathermen, Malcom X, and the Black Panthers, were as much or more what produced The Great Society Programs and the civil rights laws of LBJ, not just MLK and the non-violent anti war protesters. The powers that be were not scared of the non-violent groups and did not concede radical changes because of them. In none of these three time periods did voting Blue No Matter Who or asking nicely produce any radical or great amount of progress beyond incremental steps. We don't have time for incremental progress anymore, because we are facing a right-wing Christofascist enemy that plays for keeps with only hardball and scorched earth. We need warriors on our side in the political fight, not centrist corrupt sellouts like Biden, Pelosi, or Schumer. Frederich Douglass said, quite rightly, that "Power concedes nothing without a fight. It never has and it never will". Asking nicely and accepting incremental steps, never gets it done. How many years have we been trying to get single payer or universal health insurance? The last radical progress we made on .that was Medicare, when I was 7. The ACA was a joke, merely a gift to the insurance companies and drug companies, and it has done nothing to reduce medical bankruptcies or improve our life expectancies for anyone below the top few income groups, or make needed, life-sustaining drugs like insulin available and affordable to all who need them.

@FvckY0u So true. About a week ago I was in a bar at a karaoke show, where I became the object of a guy bullying me and trying to start shit with me. What made it worse was that he was there with a woman that has shared a mutual hatred of me for some time. She even started egging him on after he started harassing me, by literally making up shit on the spot for him to tell me and insult me with. My late wife developed dementia, and years ago I had attended a Meetup.com group for single people, after her death, where I first met this bitch that was egging the guy on. I have hated her ever since the Meetup group. So during this encounter a week ago, she told him that I had "said in a meeting that I had beaten" my wife. WTF? What kind of sick bitch would make up something like that to give to her buddy to use in a bar argument? My wife died from her dementia, and I can't believe someone would make up lies about that shit. But she clearly has no heart or compassion at all. I wanted to smack the shit out of her, as the guy told me she had told him that. What assholes, both of them! And, big surprise, I found out later from a third party, that they are both Trumpers, not surprising, as the guy gave me a parting shot as my friend and I moved away from where they were sitting, by saying " Fuck Biden", like he even knew anything about my politics, since I hate Biden too and wanted Bernie both times he ran. What an ignoramus! Not all assholes are Trumpers, but it does seem like most assholes I run into personally these days, versus on the net, are Trumpers... no fucking surprise there, since neither Trumpers nor assholes seem to care about the truth, esp. when it comes to telling it instead of lying...

@FvckY0u I'm with you on the dating issue. We are both men of greater integrity than most, and I will speak the truth, regardless of whether it may offend some women. It didn't offend my late wife, so I will not change now, just to appease women who are not my type in the first place. I have no problem with militant feminists, only when they cross the threshold to being man-hating, and then on top of that, refuse to admit or acknowledge that about themselves.

I got tired of ignoring it and felt the need to confront it, both with her, and other women on Agnostic who clearly had a double standard where they felt it was ok for them to male bash all the time on the forums, but men were not allowed to make any negative statements regarding women without being accused of being misogynists and getting bashed by multiple members of the sisterhood on the boards. I got blocked by lots of women for that in the past, but I am proud that I stood up to it and called them out on it every time. Only one man, racocn8, (Howard) ever had the balls to back me up on it. About all the other men were either too afraid of the sisterhood, or were maybe hoping, back when people still thought this was a viable dating site, that by not bucking the sisterhood they could end up dating someone from the site that was watching the arguments on the forums. And they didn't want to risk offending some women that they wanted to date.
My rant for today.

I agree. I would say, however, that people on the political right tend to be way more obedient and unquestioning of authority than people on the left. TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 8, 2022:
@FvckY0u You make some good points. Most of us on Agnostic do appear to be deeper thinkers than the average person. I do agree, however, that it might be true that it takes a deep thinker to do the mental gymnastics of avoiding reality, making sense of nonsense, etc. Those people might be hard to detect or distinguish from other believers who aren't deep thinkers and are easily able to accept religion. Same with members of the ignorant herd simply choosing to not think critically rather than lacking the intellect to do so, in the first place. Thanks for the props on my IQ. I have been tested twice as an adult, and my IQ was in the 130s both times, but I am far from the smartest person I know. My late wife was smarter than me, and a friend of mine who is a retired doctor claims to have an IQ of 163. I'll take his word for that, but at the same time, he has some emotional intelligence issues, has to be right all the time, and can be exasperating to deal with at times.

@TheoryNumber3 I'm widowed and not at all looking for someone exactly like my late wife, who was not perfect, and neither am I. I just want someone compatible. But you wouldn't believe the number of divorced women who ignorantly assume that I AM looking for someone exactly like my late wife, and that I felt she was perfect, etc. It just shows that they are defensive and also that they would rather cynically assume the worst about all widowed men, instead of actually giving them a fair chance, a clean slate and getting to know them as individuals. But that would take too much humility and effort on their part, so they would rather make knee-jerk assumptions about all widowed men and just refuse to date widowed men, instead sticking with only men who are divorced, like them, preferring to just stick with the familiar, rather than take a risk. I also suspect that many of them are actually more interested in finding a man who understands and sympathizes with their emotional hurt from the divorce than in finding a compatible partner. If that is the case., maybe they should just get a therapist, instead of trying to meet that need solely thru a dating partner. What did Einstein say about continuing to do the same thing (sticking with only divorced men) and expecting different results? I agree with the rest of your comment. At least the divorced men seem to be trying something different than just dating the same kind of woman they divorced.....

But one thing you can bet your ass on, without unions and a strong socialist movement in America's past, we would never have had a middle class, medical benefits for average workers, paid holidays, an 8 hour day, a 40 hour week, workplace safety regs and laws, etc. Those things didn't happen just because of the Great Depression and they sure as hell didn't happen out of the goodness of the hearts of big business or employers.... And most of the progress did not happen non-violently, most of them were paid for with the blood and even the lives of many people killed by strikebreakers and private cops hired by the employers.... But school history books rarely, if ever talk about those things, so most Americans, except for those who have been in unions, don't even know that history...

@Organist1 I've been saying this for decades... This is not the 60s anymore. Asking nicely and appealing to conscience doesn't work anymore. Winning against the Repubs requires playing hardball and playing dirty sometimes, because winning really is everything now and people no longer respect someone who does not fight hard. They only respect warriors who get results, which is why Reagan was popular with the working class, even tho his policies weren't, because he was a warrior in how he did politics. Americans do not get nuance. They only get who appears to actually be fighting for them and who isn't. That is why Bernie Sanders and Trump were the most two popular pols in America in recent years. One was a total liar about fighting for the working class and the other wasn't. But what does that tell you about how people think when it comes to supporting pols? That what matters, even more than results, is who appears to be a fighter for their policies and who isn't.

I dress casual all the time and feel no need to dress fashionably upscale, because I do not identify with upper middle class people and want to make that clear in my clothing, rather than risk being lumped in with them on appearance. My one suit is for funerals and weddings, that's it. I'm not interested in impressing most people. Like you, I am probably to the left of Bernie, but in America, that doesn't really matter much, because we are never going to get anyone to the left of him as a leader, at least not in my lifetime.

She highly over estimates the degree that most Republicans care about the majority of Americans. For one thing, the majority in many of their states that elected them are Right Wing Christian Nationalists. There is a reason the most populous states on the coasts are Blue and the mid country and ...

Yup, when it comes to statewide elections in my red state of Iowa, as far as having any impact on the outcome, my vote has about as much effect as a fart in the wind, as someone else on Agnostic said recently. Same thing with writing to the Repub pols from here who serve in congress or the state government. I won't waste my time with the latter. As far as writing letters to the editor, that is also a waste of time, unless one is out for an ego trip, since almost nobody reads the Des Moines Register anymore and a letter to them would serve no purpose other than letting other people know they aren't alone in agreeing with your opinion, but it would have no effect on public policy. The days of letters like that having any effect are long gone, at least around where I live.
My latest rant.

I have always seen conservatives as basically selfish and progressives as being more generous towards others and more interested in the greater good than their own self interest.
TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 4, 2022:
@FvckY0u Well you are certainly right about all that. It really is more about up and down, rather than left and right, like the Occupy Movement said so well, the 1% against the 99%. Everything else is mostly just a distraction. It is all about those with all the money and power against those who don't. With all the bought pols in DC in the middle working to keep the lid on things and serve the 1% while pretending to care about the 99% just long enough to get their votes and then forget about them in between elections.
My latest rant.

@FvckY0u My attitude is that they can "feel" as compassionate as they want, in their own minds, or be as Christlike as they want in their individual acts, but as long as they support fascist Repubs, in my mind they are neither compassionate nor Christian. They have sold out their religion for political power and they are both hypocrites and their religion no longer has any moral legitimacy to me either.
It is very difficult for me to enjoy this Independence Day when 167.

I'm feeling sad for my country. I didn't even put my flag out today.
TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 4, 2022:
These days I feel like what is the point of having an American flag out? Seems like at least half the time anyway the flag is being flown at half mast for some mass shooting or death of someone important. So frequent that most people have no idea what the reason is during that particular period for it not flying at full height..

I would say liberalism is for the status quo while progressiveism is for moving forward..
TomMcGiverin replies on Jul 4, 2022:
@FvckY0u Some less than others. I vote third party every chance I get, so my hands are cleaner... and in primaries, I always vote for the most progressive Dem, which means I almost always lose, but I can have a cleaner conscience than most liberals, for sure...
