This could be about anywhere that people want to move to.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 22, 2022:
I don't see that attitude-yet-around the Des Moines area, because, honestly, the metro area has been getting a lot better and more progressive in the last decade or two. But, given time, I'm sure it could end up with the same kind of whining later on from the people already living here. Like the OP said, it is a universal kind of dynamic and cultural issue.
This could be about anywhere that people want to move to.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 22, 2022:
I think that mag is hilarious, people whining about how their cute, hip, perfect city has been ruined by the latecomers. The ultimate in a conservative mindset, being selfish, defensive and entitled while condemning those who committed the sin of moving there later than them. They must not realize the irony of how all Native Americans have way more right to feel that way about all white people in the US, and have been entitled to feel that way for centuries, rather than a decade or so, like the Portland Moaners. Talk about wallowing in First World problems.
I have had this on my truck for 4 years now.

You live in NM, which is probably way more tolerant of non-belief than Iowa. You would never get away with it here, vandalism would be certain. I do wear my Agnostic shirt in public sometimes, but rarely to bars for karaoke, because there the combination of redneck assholes and alcohol would ensure bullying on a regular basis. And these days, I seem to get bullied and harassed enough as it is at karaoke simply for not singing country songs, instead singing alt rock, and looking too much like a lib wimp to the bullies.

I agree with everything you said, and because I believe that most Americans are not someone I would trust to be smart and reasonable enough to use guns wisely, I don't want vigilantes to become respectable and above the law in America. Hell, I don't even trust most people enough to allow them to carry guns, but I am outnumbered in that respect. I think only bad will come of more people feeling emboldened to play vigilante, and that it will lead to our country becoming more like the Purge movies, only instead of being one night a year, it will be every day.

Bill Maher's False Flag Supply | Real Time with Bill Maher (HBO) - YouTube
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 19, 2022:
Not that much of an exaggeration, at least of the Trumpers I have seen in Iowa. They are mostly ugly, ignorant rednecks, and a typical one is the guy at my local senior center. He has shown up every day this summer wearing a sleeveless black T-shirt. It looks absolutely disgusting, because he has a huge beer gut and the shirt is always showing some of his lower belly and top of his ass. I have complained to the site director that his clothing is indecent and gross-looking, as he wears the same shirt about every time, but she won't do anything, saying the site has no clothing rules, but the real reason is probably that she doesn't want to have a stink about him feeling picked on because he is a Trumper or possibly too poor to afford appropriate clothing. But his attire is just this side of not wearing a shirt, which I know would get him barred from being in the room. On the other hand, in the time since the insurrection, the FBI investigations of the rioters charged in the event, it appears that the majority of them were not ignorant rednecks or were lower class men, but instead were often military veterans or even current or former members of law enforcement. So Maher's stereotype, while accurate of most men at Trump rallies, does not actually fit most of the Jan. 6 rioters..
Joe needs to go. But we still need to gain two seats to get him in line.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 19, 2022:
I would feel so unsympathetic to see him assassinated, but it would never happen, and even if it did, he would be replaced by a Repub appointee that would be worse. As for needing two more Dems in the Senate to force him and Sinema to cooperate, I bet that behind those two obvious traitors to the Dems, there are probably at least another six to ten Dem senators who are just as corrupt and happy to sabotage progressive legislation. Right now Manchin and Sinema are glad to play the villains for the Dems, so the rest of them don't have to show their true colors as much or openly as those two.
What side are you on?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 19, 2022:
No shit. The high gas prices are pretty new, what isn't new at all is the decades long class war against the 99% by the rich, corporate America, and the duopoly in DC, which have been responsible for all of those shitty economic policies. Both major parties are equally responsible for all the shitty policies that have kept the 99% poorer for the benefit of the 1%. For every Manchin or Sinema, there are several more corrupt Dems in the Senate ready to block any progressive legislation.

Capitalism - just doing what it does best!
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 17, 2022:
Yup, it's all about the peasants working hard to make the rich even richer. Capitalism is designed for all the wealth to flow up to the top, never to be shared equally between most members of the economy. I never bought into the propaganda, and thus have rightfully hated ever business owner I ever worked for, as they typified the attitude in the above meme. They have nothing but contempt for us peasants, including their own employees, so why should I have any positive feelings about them? I just was smart enough to conceal my feelings during me working years while at the jobs... While waiting for the track and field coverage to start today on CNBC, I watched a small bit of Undercover Boss, and it made me want to puke, with these CEOs going rather poorly undercover as worker peasants, and trying to act humble and benevolent to their worker bees. What a crock this show is! It disgusts me that it is so popular and that most people still buy the myth that CEOs are nice, good-hearted people, instead of greedy sociopaths.... In most American companies, the bulk of any rewards or bonuses for performance only go to the managers of a local branch of the company, not to the grunt workers who actually made it happen at the local level.

The pickings look really slim in your area on this site. Nobody that's been on the site in the last year. Agnostic.com has never been a viable dating site for most of its members, except for a very few large metro areas in the US.
Hi everyone, I'm brand new to the group and pretty new to the site.

Rotsa ruck... I saved you the trouble of running down the women in your area on this site that might be your age. Only one of them has been on here recently, and the rest from your area, Florida, have been gone for a year or more. Pretty typical for the last few years, as most people realized this is not a viable dating site for most people in the US, unless they want to date long distance. I totally hear you on the profiles in regular dating sites, like my local dating pool on Match. Most profiles of women are very strongly religious. I just pass those by, the same as women with lots of photos of their family and plenty of statements about how family oriented they are, etc. Since I know from experience, that they will never agree to date a childfree guy like myself who is not family-oriented. When the profile lists them as Christian Other, that usually means, in my experience with Match, that they are members of a non-denominational church. The point is, they are unlikely to be compatible.

The first time, there were no vaccines available yet, and I had the Regeneron immuno treatment three days into my illness. This time, I had already been vaccinated twice and boosted twice. So far I have not had long haul Covid effects from either illness. I have no doubt that if I had not been vaxed and boosted, I would have gotten much sicker this time around.

But I have no faith in Merrick Garland and he will not go hard after them because he and Biden are too afraid that doing THAT will cause civil war. I think civil war is inevitable, so why not at least try to prevent or discourage it by punishing the conspirators? It's our only chance left to save any sort of democracy that might be left.

Well duh. Anyone who ever played high school sports knows perfectly well the power coaches have over players and how easily the players are coerced into going along with whatever program or religion or whatever personal cause the coach may choose to promote thru the team. The only time that players have the power to defy the coach and still stay on the team is when there is a player revolt against the coach, but that is something very hard to organize and pull off when the team players are always more or less in competition with each other for playing time and starting positions on the team. High school players are too emotionally immature and young to achieve the kind of solidarity and cooperation to pull off a revolt against the coach, which is why the only player revolts I have ever heard of that were successful against a coach were at the college level.

All the new SC justices are lawyers. Lawyers know how to parse their words carefully and lie without appearing to lie. You are correct that the senators should have known they would overturn Roe as soon as they had the chance, since that is the main reason he nominated each of them. I wouldn't say the senators were naive or stupid, they and the SC nominees were playing their assigned roles that have been in place ever since Bork was rejected for the court. The game is that Repub nominees would lie about their judicial biases and the Dem senators would posture and grill them on their views, then vote to confirm them anyway. Meanwhile, the gullible voters who support the Dems would continue thinking that the Dem Party actually cared about abortion and other culture war issues instead of only caring about their corporate donors. As for MC, she is a petty and spiteful bitch, and she blocked me a long time ago, along with kicking me out of a group she ran, the Online Dating: The Reality, because she didn't like how I confronted some of the women in it for their continued male-bashing. They play for keeps and believe in total scorched earth. Dems like Biden that believe they can be reasoned with or compromised with are either dreaming or just using that as an excuse for inaction. Right now, my money is on the latter, but most Americans are seeing thru the excuses and are going to punish the Dems big time in the next two elections, by either not voting at all or voting for Repubs. The Dems have only themselves to blame. They could have won either time by nominating Bernie, and we might have been able to avoid this collapse, but now it is too late and their corporate donors will be the only ones from the Dem side that will win from the collapse of America. The voters and the Dem pols won't matter anymore as elections will only be a memory. I'm not shocked at all, but then again, I've been reading Chris Hedges for the last several years, and he's only been warning us about this for at least that long. The only shock is how quickly it's increasing and accelerating.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 9, 2022:
Most likely the closings of most churches, the small ones, is due to the strains of the Covid pandemic and the economic effects on their members, who can no longer donate like they used to, with losing jobs and not being able to keep up with inflation. The smaller churches tend to be mainline denominations and also tend to be mostly older people, who are dying off and not being replaced with younger members, who do tend to choose mega churches over smaller ones.

I agree. I would say, however, that people on the political right tend to be way more obedient and unquestioning of authority than people on the left. Which explains why so many Trumpers and members of the GOP are so quick to believe in conspiracy theories that have no basis in fact. I also agree that most people aren't evil, but so many are dumb. As Sticks 48 has often said, half the population have IQs below 100. It is easy, on a site like this, where the vast majority of its members have IQs well above 100, probably because non-believers tend to be smarter and more intellectual than most believers, to forget we are mostly way smarter than most Americans. It lulls us into feeling more normal or average than we are and thus, easily frustrated with why most of the herd outside of this site is not as intelligent or critical in their thinking as most of us. If only most Americans were like us, we wouldn't have a government chosen by sheeple..

But both times, she instead made sure that Bernie didn't win the nomination. So I really don't give a fuck anymore what she says should happen with political policy, since she is only interested in promoting her own career. She has blown all of her credibility and right to be trusted long ago.

Same with poor people, who must be sorted into the deserving and undeserving in order to determine who deserves help from the church. With them as well, it is assumed that most poor people made bad choices that made them poor, so they deserve no help from the government.

Some folks are just so dumb you wonder how they manage to breathe without doing so thru their mouth. They are too dumb to be allowed to live, no offense to the genuinely mentally-challenged, who do deserve as much as the rest of us. MTG displays her idiocy every time she opens her mouth... Maybe people vote for her merely for the entertainment she provides them...
What is the silliest profile comment you've seen on a singles dating site?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 7, 2022:
I see things like that all the time in profile essays. I prefer to call them cliche sayings, but it amounts to the same thing. I pass those women up because they are either brainless or too lazy to come up with anything that is actually personal and interesting. Same if they are just writing what they think men want to hear.
Brittney Griner pleads guilty in Russian trial: what happens next?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 7, 2022:
Actually, we do. There is a Russian arms dealer that has been in American custody here for a while, along with another American falsely imprisoned in Russia for a while. Griner was detained right after Ukraine was invaded and it has been obvious from the start of her detainment that it was done with the idea of Putin trading her and the other American for the Russian arms dealer, as well as some leverage against Biden regarding sanctions against Russia. Griner should have been warned by our State Dept. before she was detained, that she was likely to be targeted by Russia.

This post is in regards to gun control but first I'm going to talk about abortion.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 7, 2022:
I totally agree, but it would never happen in the patriarchy of the USA, because most gun owners are men, and we wouldn't want to offend or inconvenience them. Guns and toxic masculinity are sacred, so we can't mess with either of those sacred cows. But what do I know, I'm just a wacko socialist who believes that if we are going to force women to carry unwanted pregnancies, we need to spread the suffering and responsibility for those pregnancies by also requiring the responsible male to get snipped with a vasectomy, so he can't knock up some other woman who doesn't want a baby. I mean, it takes two to tango and he has already proved too irresponsible to use a condom, so why should he get to breed again? Let's make punishment for bad choices an equal opportunity thing for both genders if they screw up.... Better yet, let's stay the fuck out of other people's sex lives...

Americans Have Lost Confidence in Government, Religion, but Not Unions
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 7, 2022:
With the way the Dem Party has sold out to corporations, unions are about the only thing left, for most workers, that stands between them and neo-feudalism, where corporations are the new ruling families that own and run everything.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 7, 2022:
I'm sure I could have passed the physical tests as far as performance based activity stuff, but may well have been rejected on stuff found in the medical exam, such as my atril fib heart condition, back in my early fifties, but I know I could never pass those performance tests after my late 50s. Are they talking about stuff you need to pass just to become a cop, or about stuff you have to keep passing on a regular basis even after you are on the job? I bet most cops in their fifties probably couldn't pass those tests in their later years on the job. I used to play full court basketball until my late forties, so I know I could have run a mile and half in under 12 min. or less back then.
Americans Have Lost Confidence in Government, Religion, but Not Unions
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 6, 2022:
It all depends on the union, some of them are honest, some are corrupt. Some are actually on the side of the their rank and file members, some have leaders that are more on the side of Repubs and management than the workers. Nowadays most of the unions that are still left, are public employees unions, since in private industry, most unions were broken long ago and everybody scabbed out. In general, I would much rather work in a job that had a union representing me, and gladly pay dues, than work in a non-union job.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 5, 2022:
My state, Iowa, is not far behind in this shit. Our guv, Covid Kim Reynolds, is pushing all kinds of bills to send public money to private religious schools, undermine teachers, ban books, end tenure, restrict what can be taught, etc. She is doing her best to make us more than just the nickname, North Mississippi, as soon as possible. It seems to be her desired legacy after she leaves office...

As, Mel Brooks sang in his movie, History Of The World, Part I, " The Inquisition, what a show!" Yeah, these assholes want to take us back to the Middle Ages and The Spanish Inquisition, etc. Where anybody with a viewpoint they don't like can be put on trial and or persecuted. They are the modern Spanish Inquisitors, only without the humorous aspect of those characters in the Monty Python sketch of that name, The Spanish Inquisition.... Let's see: Mentally ill. Trump fan. Gun lover. Mass shooter. Why are none of us here surprised to see this combination of traits in the same person? Ever since I first saw the photo of this creep, he looked to me like the typical kind of smug, young punk that I would just as soon smack in the face as listen to a word out of his mouth. It sounds like he craved attention and is probably happy that he is now famous and will be remembered for a long time. Now, time to admit some ignorance on my part... 'A recipe for a lot of suffering': How abortion bans may strain the red states - CNNPolitics
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 5, 2022:
The anti- abortion conservatives don't care about suffering by those their policies affect. In fact, they believe that suffering, as long as it is not done by them, improves the person's character, while some of them may even get sadistic pleasure in knowing their policies cause suffering to the people they hate. To them, females who have sex outside of procreation are immoral, so they deserve what suffering they get, so the mindset goes... For some reason, they seem less interested in the men involved.
It's been awhile since I've been on here.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 5, 2022:
It may look that way to you, but the obvious truth to those of us who have stayed is that the community has actually shrunk greatly since you left. New people rarely show up here these days, the vast majority of people left quite a while ago, mostly because they realized this site was useless for dating, others because they got tired of the squabbling on the forums, and nowadays there are probably only a few hundred active members who visit frequently and post or comment. Also, the admin. has been absent for at least a couple years from here. For what it's worth, welcome back..... I also know that a lot of members from here went to a FB group for refugees or escapees from here, started by a former member of here. I joined it for a short time, but then got banned from it by the group's founder, who had gotten banned from here before that. She got petty and power mad over there, what a surprise-not!
Corporate political donations need to be controlled or eliminated.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jul 4, 2022:
They are the main reason that both major parties are no longer responsive to what the majority of Americans want that are also in opposition to what the corporate donors oppose, because those things would cost the corporations in lower profits and higher taxes.

I like the way he doesn't dress like a member of the ruling class and instead more like one of us peasants, gives him extra credibility to me. I like this guy even more than Bernie. He tells the simple truth, but even more powerfully. I bet they are afraid of him over there. Instead of wearing the suit like Bernie, he just lets his words speak for him and they have to take him seriously because of his words. He makes me proud to be Irish American, and I share his healthy sense of anger.. He dresses more like Roger Waters of Pink Floyd than like an MP, wonderful...
