SCOTUS new robes.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 25, 2022:
In fairness, Roberts did vote to uphold Roe, so maybe he doesn't deserve the pope outfit, but he may well have voted that way since he already knew it wouldn't affect the outcome.

Too many were too complacent. We now have to fight like hell.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 25, 2022:
I never said it wouldn't eventually happen. What I did say, was that the Repubs, and their people on the SC, would never do it as long as they knew it would cost them most federal elections, the same as the civil rights laws of the 60s cost the Dem Party the South from then on in elections. But now that the Repubs have passed voter suppression laws in so many key states, they know they can still win elections there even if most people don't want to vote for them or their policies. So that's why they finally pulled the trigger on Roe, because they don't need to fairly win elections anymore in those states and can still win the WH and control DC, no matter how many women start voting against them in the backlash against this decision. As they might say in chess, they were waiting until they were in position to checkmate before making their big move....

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 24, 2022:
No shit! The root cause of what happened today is the forty years of voting for corporate Dems, who then abandoned the working class in favor of their corporate masters. Which led to the working class voters, esp. white males, abandoning the Dem Party and voting instead for Repubs. Which led to Trump being elected because, even tho he lied about it, he at least addressed the grievances of the working class, so they took a chance and voted for him. Which led to the three shithead justices appointed by Trump. So here we are, thanks a lot corporate Dems, your collusion with the Repubs has paid off in spades! Meanwhile, like always, the Dems have nothing to offer but hand-wringing and excuses for why this happened..... Not to mention the corporate Dems in the Senate who helped confirm those three nominees, as well as Clarence Thomas..., who we can also thank Biden for.... Voting for corporate Dems, or even most Dems, is a waste of time, because it led to this and is not going to solve this either. Vote third party, everybody, and throw out both of the corporate parties. It will not only save us from theocracy, but it will eliminate the use of bullshit wedge issues like this and the rest of the culture wars, so we can finally move on to class warfare, for once on our behalf, against the rich and corporations, without having to resort to violent revolution...

Does society despise working class men? Or just ignore them?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 22, 2022:
This is nothing new. It has been known for a long time that the automation and shipping of jobs overseas, as well as the busting of unions and decline in union membership, have all disproportionately affected blue collar men more than women or even both genders in white collar jobs. So no wonder that blue collar men, who used to be solid Dem voters, are now mostly Repub voters, esp. since the Dem Party has not only sold them out and left them behind economically, but the party has also promoted identity politics as a substitute for class warfare on behalf of the working class, esp. working class men, and instead advocated for minority groups, women, and immigrants, all people that white blue collar men, somewhat rightfully, have seen as competitors for their jobs. No surprise that white blue collar men are so attracted to Trumpism and the Repub Party, since it plays to their legitimate grievances against the Dem Party on economic and trade policy while it also appeals to their sense of victimhood regarding the Dem Party and the system favoring every other group over them, such as women, minorities, and immigrants, at least as they see it.
A sad state of affairs.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 22, 2022:
I've been saying for a few years now that Biden has obvious dementia, but no mainstream Dems are willing to believe me, and it's not that I am a Trumper or a conservative. I supported Bernie, and that's actually who most Americans would have preferred over Biden or Trump. He is the one who turned out the huge crowds to his rallies, not Biden. But he's not who the corporate media, the DNC, the oligarchs, Wall Street, and corporate America wanted, so we were given the choice between the demented Biden and the crazy tyrant Trump. Like our votes and wishes actually matter anymore.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 21, 2022:
I don't think the hearings will make much difference in the next two elections, because even if people feel Trump and the Repubs were guilty of making the insurrection happen, people will remember and care more about how Biden and the Dems promised so much in 2020 and then failed to deliver on it. And those same people will not buy the argument that the big, bad meany Repubs were who prevented them from doing it. They are able to see that it was more due to Pelosi, Schumer, Biden, and also Manchin and Sinema, so they will blame the who party and the Dems will lose big the next two times. As they deserve to..

I consider your story a wise and timely reminder for this widowed man to never marry again and to be very careful about committing to a serious relationship without carefully vetting the emotional health of the woman. Even with that, it reinforces my current position on not moving in with or living again with anyone as long as both of us are in good health, have our own adequate money to afford living apart. I cannot imagine living thru this kind of nightmare ending to a relationship, as it would probably emotionally break me and ruin my physical health. I already endured six years of hell with my late wife's dementia before her death. I don't need to live that again anytime soon, so being alone is still better for the time being... I'll keep looking for a partner, but your story makes me glad I'm not desperate enough to jump in too soon with anyone.... I have to agree. The public hearings on the insurrection look like a typical DNC infomercial effort for the mid-terms, and it's not going to work for them. I already knew that nothing substantial would come from them as far as the leaders of the insurrection being indicted or punished and this article simply confirms my correct cynicism. But I really don't think the Dem Party leadership cares about losing control of the government in DC. They will be glad to going back to being the minority, fake opposition party, as they always have since the early 90s, when getting the corporate campaign money became more important to them than winning federal elections. It's been that way ever since the DLC was created in the late 80s.

What is the pettiest reason you won’t date someone?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 14, 2022:
I'm not telling, lol... But I'd be very interested in hearing from the OP on this subject... Notice how so far no women have weighed in, just guys... But I will mention three common reasons that I feel are petty, that are reasons many women won't date me: I choose not to own a smartphone. I don't have kids. I don't drink alcohol, even tho I am very tolerant and comfortable with a partner who does drink moderately. I've given this some more thought and I will share two of my petty reasons, because for a long time I have enjoyed singing karaoke at bars: The woman is a bad singer, but insists on singing anyway at karaoke shows. The woman sings the same few songs every time she sings at karaoke. Either or both reasons would be a dealbreaker for me on dating them.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 13, 2022:
I hear you, and you are right and realistic when it comes to federal elections, because these days both parties are so bought off by big money that it really doesn't matter much who controls DC. Because Wall Street, corporate America, the rich, and the MIC win every time, no matter which major party comes out on top. What does matter tho, is people continuing to share their opinions with each other wherever and whenever possible, outside of the corporate media, because that is the only chance we still may have of getting out of our stranglehold of the duopoly. We still have the collective ability, tho it's very unlikely to happen, of collectively waking up and voting out the two major parties from power in DC. I am very pessimistic of it happening soon enough to save our country, much less happening in my lifetime, but that doesn't mean I will quit advocating for it.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 12, 2022:
Unfortunately, there really isn't a better way, at least not at our age. You and I are both retired and not actively involved in any churches, so that eliminates two of the most common ways, work and church, that people would meet in the past. Other common ways are school and friends, both of which, also, are not usually relevant or helpful at our age in meeting other singles, as at our age most or all of our friends are married or coupled and don't socialize or know any other single people they could match us with. Lastly, that leaves only singles groups and other groups that are organized around a shared interest or activity. Those groups are things I've tried and they are, in general, very poor and inefficient ways to meet other singles for dating. The singles groups usually include a lot of people who are either not interested in meeting other people for dating or in dating at all. And many of the people in those singles groups are single for a good reason, as in personality problems that make them undateable and often never married. The interest and activity groups take a lot of time to become involved in enough of them to allow adequate opportunities to meet a lot of other single people thru them, and even then, you find a lot of the people in those groups either are already coupled or are not interested in dating anymore. So the dating sites are still the best place to efficiently make contact with the largest group of people who are, at least obtensibly, single and interested in dating. It's the best of the worst and it is what it is...

Not surprising. Many years ago, I attended the pride parade here in Des Moines, Iowa. A friend of mine was part of the event's security detail and they were expecting trouble at the parade with the local Bible-thumpers, and, as expected, they got some of it. A van with markings on it of something like River Of Life Church was spotted by my friend, who began following the van after it showed up in the parade area. The van was spotted leaving a dumpster that had been set on fire, undoubtedly to disrupt the parade and force it to either detour or stop. My friend put out the fire and the parade went on uninterrupted when it later got to that area. Typical petty right wing tactics. My friend also alerted the cops about the van, who later stopped it and, of course, the driver denied any involvement with the dumpster fire. The cops told him to leave the area and stay away, which they did.

No surprise to me. Repubs feel they are above all laws and rules that apply to the rest of us, so they will attack a person, as a mob or individually, if they see the other person as the enemy. They smugly feel the cops and courts will always take their side and let them off scot free. And they feel that way because, most of the time, they get away with their violence exactly like that. Most people in my town are like that, so I would never show up at one of their events wearing something that would offend or oppose them, because I am not ready to fight a mob or anyone, for that matter, unarmed. I am not even willing to fight them one on one physically, because I know the cops and the system won't treat me fairly or protect me. The only place I will wear a shirt like that around a group of these assholes, is the senior center in my town, because the staff there would have to do something and punish people there if they attacked me. Any place else, I'm not going to risk being victimized for my dissent.
Not really an overstatement 😳
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 10, 2022:
I do agree with you on this. If the feds don't really punish both the actual rioters on Jan. 6, as well as the pols and leaders, including Trump, for their role in this, the insurrection will be a dress rehearsal for the next time, and we will have a real civil war, with fighting in the streets. That is what the fascists want and they will not hold back if they feel the government is not serious about opposing or punishing them for Jan. 6 or any future uprisings. And I think the civilian leaders of our country are afraid of opposing them in any serious manner, because they know a majority of the cops and military are sympathetic to them, if not outright members of the same right-wing, white Christian supremist groups as the Jan. 6 group.

They will target anyone who is not part of their side, gays, intellectuals, liberals, colored people, immigrants, and all non-Christians or Catholics, as enemies of the state. In other words, the same playbook as Nazi Germany for oppressing and killing off anyone they see as a "contaminant" of their White Supremicist nation.
It would be funny if it weren't so goddamn serious. And cynical. And mendacious. And pathetic.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2022:
That's really not exaggerated much from the Repub distractions from their cowardice on gun control. The line between satire and reality is often very thin...
Yes. How come???
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2022:
Because America has a unique sort of toxic masculinity that the gun makers and Repub pols have combined to aggressively market guns to men, esp. young men, in a way that makes them feel more masculine, superior, and more powerful than other men, and esp. women, by owning and using guns. It's not much different than how large pickup trucks and guns are also marketed to women, who buy and use both of them in order to feel more powerful and less vulnerable, esp. to men, by having these toys.. And as long as there is so much profit for the gun makers, and so much political benefit for the Repub Party to oppose gun laws, the gun laws will never fundamentally change. Lastly, as Chris Hedges said so eloquently today, and Obama spoke about years ago, to many people on the right, owning guns and having their fundamentalist religion are, they feel, the only power or rights they have left under our corrupt system where the corporations and the government dictate everything else in their lives. They feel powerless against the corporations and the government, so they cling to their religion and guns for emotional comfort, because at least, in their minds, the government and corporations have taken everything else from them. And they are mostly right. Hedges also talks about the toxic mythology that white Americans, esp. males, have about how they came to dominate America and how much they need to fear those of other races that their ancestors oppressed and will surely take revenge on them once whites are outnumbered here, unless the whites arm themselves enough to defeat and protect themselves from them. Hedges says the country has two paths, civil war or a modern New Deal like FDR's to finally improve the lives of the underclass and restore some balance of equality in America, but he feels the choice has already been made by the elite and everyone who is not part of the ruling elite or the reactionary white right wing of America will be collateral damage, as everyone not in the latter group, such as racial minorities, queer people, liberals, intellectuals, etc., the same people targeted by Hitler, will be hunted down or killed by the right wingers, while the ruling elite stay safe behind their gated communities, their security forces, the FBI, the police and the military. The rest of us don't matter and we are all expendable to them. They will still have their servants while they wait out the civil war.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2022:
And most people over 65 have no idea what is wrong with Medicare Advantage plans, they just think it's cheaper and better for them, until they actually need to use it for a serious illness. They believe the bullshit TV ads with celebrities pushing it and talking about all the free extra benefits that most seniors will never get from those plans. It's the most blatant form of false advertising out there, but since both parties get huge money from those companies, the FTC and congress will never do anything about it, because both parties want to privatize Medicare after they run it into the ground, same as the Postal Service..

I think I opened some eyes this past weekend.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2022:
That's hilarious that you got to actually debate them and shoot (pun intended) holes in their arguments. Most Repubs just either cut you off or start calling you names or talking about God or the Constitution once you shoot down their policy bullshit. Not surprised they moved on to religion, so they would not have to back anything there with facts or logic. I hope you blew their whole Thoughts And Prayers bullshit out of the water if they brought it up. It doesn't surprise me that most of us are more intelligent and better educated as well, than most of the Repub followers.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 5, 2022:
The reasons for a suicide can often be complex and hard to determine. One thing is probably for certain, and that is the woman no longer had any hope for things to get better in her life and she had been in emotional pain for some time before the event. Please keep us posted on how the church leaders try to explain or spin this event to the flock. That should be interesting.
Does anyone believes in life after death or has ever been to the after life and still lives today?
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 5, 2022:
My father cardiac arrested for a couple minutes and then was revived. He felt like it was a near death experience or even a temporary death experience. He said all he saw during it was " Blackness", so after that he quite believing in any kind of afterlife, tho he still sort of remained a Catholic.
Let's imagine Pete.
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 5, 2022:
My answer is that Pete is probably not actively racist in how he treats people, but he is also part of the problem by remaining oblivious and not caring to become part of any solution. When it comes to power and privilege, neutrality IS taking a side against oppressed minorities, because it is upholding the status quo. I feel the same frustrated way about my liberal friends who are all financially comfortable and in the top 15% as far as economic class. Capitalism has treated them fine and they want no significant change in the economic system, so they vote blue and support any kind of centrist corporate Dem, and also love all the PC stuff and identity politics the Dem Party substitutes for any real change on economic justice or inequality, but they hate progressives like me for demanding anything socialist from the Dem Party and they never would have supported Bernie if he had gotten the nomination. They would have either not voted for prez or voted for Trump, secretly...

This has been the story of my life, people trying to make me feel weird, damaged, or crazy because I'm a non-conformist in a state that is all about conformity, avoidance of conflict or truth-telling. Most of the culture here is alien or stifling to me, so it is a battle to maintain my self- esteem and identity in the face of it.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 3, 2022:
It is a distraction, but it is also telling. The fact that almost all the victims were Hispanic, instead of white, probably had something to do with why the cops didn't go in for over an hour. Colored lives are considered a lot less valuable than white lives by cops thinking of risking their own lives. Nobody in the corporate media is touching that issue, but I think it mattered.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 2, 2022:
I'll make the other connection, both major parties are owned by those same corporations, so we've had no enforcement of anti-trust laws for decades, and we won't get any help from either party about the price gouging and greed of those corporations now either. Wake up, people, collectively, and start voting out both parties in DC. Until then, we may as well shut up and eat our gruel that we're being served by all of those colluding groups above...

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 1, 2022:
I don't blame god for how fucked up our system is, I blame our voters for not waking up long ago and voting out the two major parties for a third party that would be responsive and effective on not only gun control, campaign financing, and economic reform, because it's not like the Soviet Union, where no free elections were allowed. We just had too many blind voters that would never take a chance on electing leaders who were not bought and corrupt, even after decades of proof that they were, and after better candidates from third parties were available as a choice. All we need is people being willing to take a chance, collectively, to start voting their hopes rather than their fears every time, with lesser evil voting or not voting at all.
