My question is, how do you know, unless told, someone is gay?
TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 12, 2020:
No one can really know, even if they claim to have a good sense of "gaydar". In the end, it's still an assumption. Why should any rational person care, is what I ask?

I know the guy, Ed Fallon, that is touched and tapped in the chest by Biden in the video. He is so right that Biden is out of it and if he had responded to Biden by touching him, even to push away his hands, the Secret Service would have been on top of him to take him to the ground.

What a fucking joke! The guy only won because he ran as a None-Of-The-Above slightly better alternative to Trump. I wonder if Time will have integrity a year from now to admit how little better than Trump he will turn out to be. I doubt it.

I can put up with a year to 18 months of depravation and isolation. In some ways, it's been good preparation and conditioning for rejoining the dating scene after Covid settles down. I would rather do without for 18 months than risk likely serious illness and possible death by taking a lot of risk with Covid and then likely getting it. I figure it's worth it in order to have a decent shot at living another 20 years or so in fair health. It also helps that I don't really miss seeing my few remaining relatives-siblings- because I don't get along with them anyway. My friends that are still in my life have the same cautious attitude about Covid. They are smarter than most people and that's probably why they are my friends.

I think I read this piece which is excerpted here from Common Dreams. Is this by Chris Hedges, I think? He tells it like it is, but most liberals and Dems are not ready to hear it. I totally agree that Biden and the Dem leaders in congress are paving the way, on purpose or not, to lose control of both houses in two years and give the White House back to the Repubs in four years, to someone even worse than Trump. We are experiencing a temp reprieve before we get our own version of Hitler in four years.

TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 10, 2020:
The Dems are masters of the pre-emptive cave and negotiating with themselves in phony pursuit of non-existent bipartisanship. Why? Because they really aren't rivals or that different than the Repubs and are instead more of a fake opposition party on all the issues that really matter to the ruling class and corporate America, which do not include identity politics and culture war issues. Most of the battles in DC over issues the two parties agree on are just so much Kabuki theater.
Senator Feinstein is no longer fit to serve. This is why we need term limits. [youtube]
TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 10, 2020:
I don't agree that term limits are the answer. Rotating chairmanships might be a good idea. But age by itself is not the issue or the problem. Biden is just as out of touch as Feinstein, and, in my opinion, also has dementia, as does Feinstein. At the same time, Bernie is just as mentally sharp as most people twenty years younger than him. I had to push my late wife to give up driving and quit working after she developed dementia, and it's not easy. But the party leaders and her loved ones need to step up and do the right thing for her, the party, and the country. I wish Biden hadn't been pushed into running and I hope he steps down soon into his administration after Covid and the economy have settled down, before he starts embarrassing himself with his dementia like he was during the primary. I don't know what meds they have him on now to help him function better, but I doubt they will keep working that well for 4 years.

Do you think the Pandemic will change the way we shop permanently?
TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 9, 2020:
I will always continue to do a fair amount of in person shopping, esp. for clothing and food, because I want to see in person what I'm buying, as well as the convenience and savings, as long as stores continue to allow in person shopping. With clothing I always want to be able to try things on to be sure they fit. I am skeptical about buying everything online and having to go by photos and info about a product. I want to see and touch things most of the time, unless it's a book, DVD or CD. Those things I don't need to see in person to know what I'm buying. Even with electronics, I want to see things in person before buying them, even if it's just a demo model. I can't believe people are willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars on buying a car online that they have not seen in person to look at even a demo model. I don't do impulse buying and most advertising doesn't work on me. I guess I'm just smarter and more skeptical than most.

I always referred to Obama as Barry The Liar, since that described his essence. Like Bill Clinton, he was such a smooth, charming liar that most people overlooked his policies. Maybe that's why, like Reagan, both of them were so popular even tho they promoted policies that hurt most average Americans, who are not very deep thinkers nor are they well-informed on matters of policy, at least.
I love this man.
TomMcGiverin comments on Dec 9, 2020:
Bill Clinton and Obama were both neoliberal traitors to the working class and most Americans. Nice to see someone tell the truth that Biden will only be an improvement over Trump in that he will be more stable, better behaved, less openly racist, more supportive of our allies, and, most importantly, much better leadership on Covid. Otherwise, things will all be the same. The swamp will stay full of the same people, same MIC, etc. Only diff is the skin color and gender, identity politics bullshit. What matters is what policies they support and who they serve, which is never the common people.

I love using these arguments on asshole Libertarians, who live in their fantasy bubble of being their own island and never needing other people or government because they are greedy wannabees, as in wannabe rich, which is never gonna happen for them. Another thing they will never admit to. A big reason why our politics are so fucked up is because since the 1980s, with the extreme transfer of wealth to the top 10% income classes, we now have a very large group of people in the top classes that no longer need services from the govt., so they demand the pols give them tax cuts along with service cuts that only affect the bottom 90% classes. These are the people, the multi-millionaires and the income groups of $250 K or more, that the pols actually listen to and serve in their policies, not the average voters. Of course, the same policies are supported by the wannabees who are still part of the bottom 90% of income groups. Talk about cutting your own throat, but they are too deluded to realize they will never make it into the top 10%.

This reminds me of a case many years ago in my area of Iowa. Some sick fuck broke into an animal shelter and attacked several of the cats there by grabbing them by the tail and swinging them from it. The cats that were not killed outright had to be euthanized due to the damage to their tails and the amount of pain they were in. After reading about it in the newspaper I hoped that the cops would catch the guy, but they never did, to my knowledge. I would like to have seen him hung by his balls so he could learn some of what agony he caused the cats.

I would like some opinions! (And these are examples of why some women are disdainful of some men .
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 28, 2020:
Gwen, you seem like a good egg from what I have read from you on the forum. You say you want opinions, but you may not like mine. Some women play just as many games as some men on dating sites. You have no control over how honest the other person will be. You can only be as honest and explicit as possible if you are seeking only a particular type of arrangement. After that, you can either stay involved or opt out. It sounds to me like you may not be explicit enough in defining to the men you engage with what you are after. Personally, I wouldn't use a dating site if what I really wanted was only some kind of FWB, which is what you seem to be after. But maybe I'm wrong about that and it depends on the dating site. Maybe a hookup site would be better for what you are after rather than something like Match or Our Time, which would seem to be more for people who want to actually date and be involved romantically. As to what you said about mutual sexual attraction, I can only speak for myself that I never assume that sexual attraction on my part towards someone is mutual, until they make it very obvious that is the case. I have never been confident about my looks, so maybe that explains that. I have no idea how most other men are on the front of assuming their attraction is automatically mutual. After two years of frustration and rejection the last time I used a dating site-before meeting someone I dated for about six months exclusively- I know that the next time I use a site after Covid, I will be a lot quicker to move on if someone does not seem right or appears to be playing games. I will come into it with no expectations and therefore will probably have less disappointment and get played less often.
Getting back in the dating game. The search is daunting. What dating sites are recommended?
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 28, 2020:
For most people in the US, I would recommend Match. Also, if you have the money and decide to join multiple sites, you will probably find a lot of the same people from Match on the other sites as well. Since Match has the most members in the US, the best use of your money would be to join Match and leave it at that. Less time and money invested than if you join multiple sites. I also think that until Covid has been resolved with most Americans being vaccinated, dating sites would be a waste of time as few people would be willing to take the risk of meeting someone new in person. So why spend the money on connecting with someone thru the site and messaging them if few are willing to take the plunge and meet up in person, because they have no idea if the other person is infected with Covid?

Britain’s Class War on Children This is what poverty does.
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 27, 2020:
The US and the UK are so similar. Each has their two major parties that both hate and beat on the poor. Only the names of the parties are different. Both nations put the military budget far ahead of providing for the needs of the masses. The one difference is that in the UK most people are keenly aware of class and know exactly where they fit into the class system of their country. In the US, most people are clueless about class, or, at most, overestimate their class status if they are in the lower classes. This is thanks to the successful brainwashing and censorship of the corporate media here doing a better job on the masses than the media in the UK.
Another meaning for other people's
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 27, 2020:
And yet, no doubt, you and other conservatives and libertarians seem to be entirely ok with how corporations and the rich continually steal from the working class and the rest of us peasants with tax cuts for just the wealthy, corporate welfare, and the military industrial complex. That kind of theft is totally fine, of course. Fuck off, greedhead... Are you already rich, or just another wannabee? At least Bernie is one pol who isn't for sale or bought off. Would you instead prefer only pols that are owned by the rich and corporations, like almost all the ones in DC?
It’s becoming more real every day.
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 26, 2020:
Becoming more real? In my opinion, we're already pretty much there. We have Newspeak, the propaganda speech of the corporate media. We have the persecution of whistleblowers, like Julian Assange, who has been imprisoned and tortured for exposing our corrupt authorites. We even have the daily Two Minutes Hate on cable channels like Fox News and MSNBC for partisans of both major parties to vent their anger at their enemies in the duopoly instead of focusing on the real enemy, the ruling class and corporate America. We also have endless war with constantly shifting narratives of who is trying to ruin America, as in China, Russia, Iran, North Korea or all of them. The main difference between Orwell's Oceania and America is we still have elections, as least for show, and that instead of TVs that spy on us while we watch things on them, we have computer devices that spy on us while we look at content on them. In both his world and ours, the rulers speak to us thru the devices on social media and we are content to let them watch us in exchange for letting us be entertained. America's so-called War On Terror, which the rest of the world has pretty much dismissed, is right out of Orwell's book as a way to distract from domestic oppression and corruption and instead keep the sheeple scared of our foreign enemies as defined by our government and fuel distrust and hatred of anyone who is different than our dominant racial group, whites.

What Trump Showed Us About America
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 21, 2020:
I fucking knew all that from the beginning of Trump, I even predicted we'd get someone like him and we'll get someone even worse in four years. That is, unless we get a presidential candidate from either a third party or, very unlikely, the Dems, that is an economic progressive. Biden or Harris won't cut it, but neither the DNC, the party establishment pols, or the loyal voters of the Dem Party seem to get it or even care if they do get it. Remember this in four years if we are all still on this site. Biden and democracy in America, what's left of it, lucked out big time this time around as if Covid hadn't happened, then Trump would have won easily.

Are there many success stories here for online dating sites?
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 21, 2020:
You definitely beat the odds, esp. since the relationship was techinically LD. I met someone on Match that I dated steadily for about six months before it ended, partly due to Covid. It was someone local, BTW. The next time I try online dating, after Covid blows over maybe this summer or next fall at the latest, my expectations will be much lower, as in next to nothing, compared to how I approached the first two years of online dating. I was very frustrated and bitter by the time I met the woman I dated, but now, with several months of sitting it out and getting used to being alone with Covid, I think I will be able to cope with the rejection and waiting game much better next time. We'll see..

TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 21, 2020:
I have known a lot of people with diagnosed mental illnesses as well as workers in the mental health field. What I have learned from them is that finding someone who can and will be supportive of a partner with mental illness is very difficult to find. And, not surprisingly, those people are usually folks who have their own mental illness. So, in other words, the realistic truth is that most single people with a mental illness that want to find a partner that will be emotionally supportive and reliable will probably need to be ok with that being a fellow person with MI. Because most so-called normal people are not willing or interested in carrying that load. Life is not a movie or romance novel. I hope my blunt honesty doesn't hurt anyone's feelings, but that's reality. If you want unconditional love and support from another creature, whether "normal" or a fellow being with MI, you might consider getting a dog or cat.

A Modest Proposal For Centrist Democrats: Join the Republican Party.
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 20, 2020:
I sure as hell wouldn't miss the corporate Dems pols and their supporters if they left the Dem Party for the Repubs, but I don't ever see it happening in my lifetime. The chances of a third party emerging that got the support of progressives and the poor who don't vote is probably more likely than the Dem Party reforming and again starting to represent the poor and progressives instead of the corporate donors and the liberals in social issues only.
Ah the pleasures of (at this moment in time) living in North Dakota.

Iowa isn't much better, and we have the Covid numbers to prove it. Like you, we have an idiot Repub guv who just ordered a toothless mask order, months after even the White House Covid task force said she should have ordered one. Most Iowans are brain dead and voted for Trump. I envy my younger sis, who lives int he blue state of Illinois, where at least they have decent leadership on Covid and people are intelligent enough to vote Dem rather than Repub., even if their state government is more corrupt than Iowa's.
This is the line for the food bank in Fort Worth, Texas .

Merry Fucking X-MAS to them.... The truth is, neither party really cares. Most Americans are too brainwashed to have figured that out, but most of those that have make up the eligible voters who don't vote.

Beats me. I have no idea how to gauge that stuff with Covid, and also wasn't good at that before Covid, as far as being able to gauge the other person's level of interest. As far as gauging my own level of attraction, I was fairly good at that before Covid. I've been sitting out the dating game since Covid hit in the spring.

Not that surprising. Trump has never had any real patriotism, only the fake, symbolic, rah-rah type that his fans eat up. He won't pay his taxes and he dodged the draft with phony medical claims. That should tell you all you need to know about his real amount of patriotism.

I agree. While I really want him gone from politics, I don't know that he's evil enough to wish him dead from Covid. I do remember what a dick he was during the Clarence Thomas hearings as well as the recent Kavanaugh ones as well. He also has been a shameless ass-kissing defender of Trump.

Access to quality healthcare thru a lifetime has always been closely related to life expectancy and health status. Income is also closely related, esp, in a country like the US where health care is a for-profit system.

I'll take group #1, Alex, for $500..... I used to work for a market research company a lifetime ago. It was laughable at times. I remember one client they took on was a pompus Repub plastic surgeon who did reconstructive surgery. He was a typical country club Repub who was running for re-election to the US Senate and had a lot going against him issue-wise. His campaign came up with the brilliant idea (sarcasm) of trying to fabricate him as an environmental candidate so they could get independents and eco-friendly Dems to overlook his policies on economic issues, foreign policy, etc. They brought in a focus group to test this approach on and, needless to say, it didn't sell. One of the few times I was proud of and able to say that maybe Iowans had more horse sense than I thought. He was not re-elected.
No Mask No Service! This is our Health! [reddit.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 16, 2020:
Poor baby. I could have some sympathy for her if she wasn't so selfish and uncaring about the health of others. Even in states, like mine, that don't have mask orders, the stores are private businesses that have always had the right to refuse service if someone refused, for example, to wear a shirt of some kind of footwear. We called it no shirt, no shoes, no service, no shit. As long as they are not enforcing it in a discriminatory manner and the rules do not target a protected class under the law, the stores can turn away anyone they want to under their rules. Unfortunately, in states without mask orders, most non-chain or small business stores won't do a mask rule because they are too chicken to deal with the assholes and are also afraid someone might sue them, both of which are lame reasons to not protect their employees or their more decent customers.
