Trump is determined leave America in the most vulnerable position possible since he was not ...
TomMcGiverin comments on Nov 17, 2020:
Not that surprising. Trump has never had any real patriotism, only the fake, symbolic, rah-rah type that his fans eat up. He won't pay his taxes and he dodged the draft with phony medical claims. That should tell you all you need to know about his real amount of patriotism.

@UUNJ I appreciate that you are more honest and realistic than most women I have dealt with in the dating game. Those women either were lying about what they wanted to hear or were mistaken about what they were ready to hear. You appear to be neither and also are rare in not expecting more from the men than you can offer yourself as far as physical condition at our age. In my experience, it seems like the women are still expecting men at my age to have the physical condition of someone younger AND have lots of money, both of which are unrealistic unless the woman has exceptional beauty. That's just how the dating market works.

@UUNJ Some people are able and willing to honestly and openly share why they are not physically attracted to someone, esp. if the other person asks them to share honestly. I am one of those people, but in the future I will think twice about doing so, even if asked, because most of the time, in my experience, even those who ask for that kind of feedback end up resenting it and turning out to not really be open to hearing it. I don't like being set up or put in a double bind by people.

If you want to get analytical about it, the Trump voters amount to just a few groups, some of whom overlap in their mindsets. Greedheads, who you referred to as those who don't want to pay taxes or fund the common good. Evangelicals who sold out their religion for getting conservative judges to go with the lip service of the Repubs on religion. The QAnon nutcases. Gun loving nuts. And, finally, bigots of all stripes who hate women, queer folk, racial and religious minorities, and liberal culture. In other words, nobody matters except white males and maybe the conservative obedient women they're married to. Our country would be so much better if they all did die off or leave.

There are always exceptions to every rule, but the fact is that having babies when young, single and without a college education or a decent paying career first means limited choices later in life and a very low standard of living. A small percentage of women manage to overcome this and get a college education, find good paying employment, maybe even win the marriage lottery and find a husband that earns a good income, but those exceptions are rare. An unplanned pregnancy at a young age to a woman on her own usually means long-term to permanent life at the poverty level or lifetime membership in the working poor.

So it's clear she changed her tune on what political side of the spectrum she supported over the other when she changed networks. TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 11, 2020:
@yvilletom I agree, Iowa sadly is not one of those states and for a couple decades now it's been a one-party red state. That is due to how Dems can't get any votes or find any candidates for statewide or federal offices that can connect with rural voters, same as Dems in most states. However, the way Iowa keeps losing population in the rural areas, it's only a matter of time before the Repubs will not longer win statewide elections or even control the legislature because the urban areas will have most of the population then. I hope I'm still alive to see that. The interesting thing about Iowa is that on a couple issues the two parties have no difference. One is air and water quality. Since factory farming is king here, neither party will stand up to the Farm Bureau and regulate hog lots or chemical pollution of the water by farm chemicals. The state department in charge of those things may as well be abolished and turned over to the Farm Bureau. The other is corporate welfare. Nuff said on that since it seems to be a national problem in state governments. The final area of similarity is regulation and inspections of nursing homes. Iowa's population skews heavily towards elderly folks and both parties take huge money from the nursing home industry, so it's the same as environmental regulation, anybody who tries to actually regulate or watchdog the industry either gets canned or is unable to get appointed by the governor of either party.
I remember why I stopped responding to posts in the general section of this website.

Your reference to identity politics as practiced by Dem party supporters and the party is amusing. As I said four years ago, most Dem voters are such rubes and so influenced by identity politics, that I said back then that after Hillary's loss to Trump, the next play to identity politics with the voters would be the Dems nominating a gay male Hispanic candidate to capitalize on the remaining ID politics cards that hadn't been played yet. As it turns out, I wasn't that far off, only because Mayor Pete was white instead of Hispanic. He had nothing going for him but being gay, but otherwise he could have run as a moderate Repub if that party wasn't so homophobic.

I think if most Americans were well-informed, payed close attention to what the parties were doing, and were adequately skeptical and critical in how they use mass media, we would have third parties that could win elections, even being outfunded by the major parties, who would either have to become responsive to us peasants, or else get voted out.

@Piece2YourPuzzle I agree and that really nails what I hate about identity politics. It uses stereotypes to con people into believing a candidate will act and govern a certain way if they get elected. In the case of Obama, it was the assumption that because he was black, and therefore assumed to be empathetic and sympathetic to the plight of colored people and poor people, would do the right thing for them if elected prez. What fans of identity politics don't get is that traitors and sellouts come in all colors, genders, and sexual orientations. Just because someone shares their group's hobbies, image, and identity on the superficial or skin level, tells you nothing about their real values or allegiances regarding class or politics.

I know more liberal Dems than I can count that actually believe this shit and blame the Repubs for all the lack of progressive action by the Dems. It's like the movie The Matrix, almost none of these people are willing to take the pill of escaping the illusion of our Matrix. And if you try to reason with them, they treat you like the crazy uncle who's off his meds...But I, and a lot of the rest of you, know better.... They can choose Harris in four years and run her on the identity politics of her being black and female, but it won't be enough because, not only is she not another Obama, but a lot of the voters have learned from the mistake of voting for Obama in 2008 and realizing he was a fraud, leading to them switching to Trump four years ago. Support for single payer is a good measuring stick for weeding out the true progressives from the corporate Dems who are Repub lite. It's always been true that when voters have the choice of Repub lite Dem and an actual Repub, they will always vote Red. Too bad the Dem leaders refuse to learn and obey this, that's why the really are a fake opposition party. They really don't care about winning at all costs, like the Repubs always do. The corporate media doesn't even need to bother about muzzling AOC, her own party has that handled. They will never let her get near having any real power in the party as a prez nominee, or a congressional leader for the Dems. Welcome to her being the new Bernie/sheepdog. Like Bernie, the Dems will use her as a poster child for fundraising and increasing voter turnout, but nothing else. Hell, I doubt she will even get to be a committee chair.

@TreeSpirit I think the impeachment vote settled any question about whether the Repubs believe in the rule of law. I rest my case. You can bet your ass that next time the Repubs will run someone who is smarter, a better liar, less prone to blurt out idiotic comments, and if the Dem establishment sticks to its decades-old strategy of nominating the usual neoliberal corporatist candidate, the Dems will lose and the Repubs will win, because next time the blacks and Hispanics are not going to bother turning out again like this time. They will ignore the pleas and cries of the Dems and the media about saving democracy, etc. as crying wolf and trying to stir them up about voting without offering them any hope or real change. @William_Mary He won't. He'll be too busy trying to deal with his legal problems, I hope. What Dem centrists need to realize and pay attention to is the fact that, with the exception of Biden, most Dems did not do well this election against the Repubs, both on the state and national level. The country stayed just about as red as four years ago. What they should take from that is not that Trump's defeat means the Dem's message is working, that the party is making headway with the white working class or any other positive signs. It simply means that Americans, a slim majority, were finally just sick enough of Trump to vote against him, not that they were voting for Dems or Biden because they thought they are much better than Repubs. Biden's win should be recognized more as if his ballot spot read None Of The Above, rather than Biden or Dem Party. But you'll never get a Biden supporter, a centrist Dem, a liberal, or the corporate media to admit any of that.

I esp. like the part about white suburban liberals, a group I hate almost as much as Repubs. Every time a Dem gets elected prez, they fall asleep in their comfort and privilege, smugly saying they have once again done their part for the country. And if the poor, the unemployed, the people of Middle East countries or Latin American countries that the US military interferes with, invades, or occupies suffer from that, it's not the liberal's problem. They've got theirs and too bad for anyone who doesn't. Their arrogance and callousness is equal to the Repubs. They have seen and heard it all before, so they will not turn out and vote if they think the candidate is saying the usual BS or does not offer their demo any specific improvements. Older people continue to vote out of habit, even if they don't believe it will change anything. @Diagoras I don't know if I will be alive to see it, but even now the younger people are immune to the whole tactic of red-baiting of progressives by calling them socialist or whatever. While some young people are still easily suckered by appeals to identity politics of steering them to vote based on the candidate's gender, race, etc., just like other voter groups, the young people that do vote based on policy rather than candidate identity do not care about labels like socialist, etc. Those young people judge the candidate on whether they share their values and policy positions, not on what labels the corporate media or party leaders give the policy or the candidate who promotes the policy. In this respect, they are savvier than their elders, who are still easily swayed by party leaders and the corporate media as well as labels. So, even tho I am very disgusted and pessimistic about the future, in this area I am strangely hopeful. These young people were born long after the Soviet Union fell apart and to them the labels communist or socialist seem like ancient myths or legends that are irrelevant to them or even phony lies. They also don't trust the corporate media or establishment elders of either party. Ranked choice voting is like campaign finance reform that would actually solve the money in politics problem. Both major parties know that public financing of all federal campaigns could be easily done and solve the problem, but they will never really support it because it would break the duopoly's stranglehold on the system and allow third parties to win. Same with ranked choice voting. Neither will happen until third parties have enough power to force it, but without either one they probably never will get that power at the fed level of government.

@DenoPenno I fucking promise it will happen again in four years if the Dems nominate another corrupt corporate neoliberal again then, and yes, Harris qualifies as that, unless by then we have a viable third party that can nominate a well known progressive and get into the general election debates. Right now, I have way more faith in a third party prez candidate getting us out of this than in the Dem party dropping its corporate donors and nominating a progressive. And for those who say a third party could never win, this time around a third of eligible voters sat this election out, about 70 million voters. So if a progressive third party candidate could get those voters excited and hopeful, get into the prez debates, and then pull in even ten million votes away from the Dem candidate, you've got a win the same way Slick Willie did in 1992.

@Zoltans_Queen The whole "a socialist can't win" is just self-fulfilling propaganda from the DNC and the corporate media because they are secretly terrified of one winning. And unfortunately, most Americans are sheeple that fall for it. How would anyone really know? We haven't had a progressive Dem nominated for prez since 1972 with McGovern, and a lot has happened since then. Voters, esp, younger people, don't really care that much about labels like socialist or moderate. They care more about the candidate's policies. And opinion surveys consistently show that voters support the kind of socialist or progressive policies that Bernie promoted. So the "Can't win" argument is phony and dishonest. The whole " electability" argument is used every time against progressives by the DNC and corporate media to kneecap progressive candidates. But the funny thing is that some of them continue to win anyway, so it proves that the argument is phony when they say they can't ever win.

@Zoltans_Queen You make two excellent points. One, is that working class people will vote for whoever says they will offer them something better than the status quo, even if (as in Trump's case) the offer is a lie. Biden and Hillary offered no improvement on the status quo, so most working class people decide to take their chances with Trump and vote for him. The other thing is that neither party even talks about poor people anymore or offers them anything to vote for economically, so the poor just sit out the election every time for the last couple decades. And why shouldn't they? I'd bet my life that the poor make up the vast majority of eligible non-voters. But the Dem leaders don't want to offer those poor non-voters anything because it would anger their big donors, the rich and corporations. Hell, they don't even give a damn about the unions anymore because the unions donate peanuts compared to the corporate and fat cat donors for the Dems. The Dems could win in a landslide with someone like Bernie as the nominee with all the poor non-voters that would turn out for him. But the Dems don't care about winning, just about keeping their corporate and rich fuck donors. So they continue the strategy of losing and hoping to win a razor thin victory by threading the needle each time with only votes from the middle class, a group that is becoming smaller and closer to extinction each year. The Dems get too much money from health care industry groups, so they don't want to offer M4all or single payer. They lucked out with Obama as a candidate because he was so charismatic and smart that people voted for him out of fatigue with W. and because he was also one of the smoothest liars in a generation. A plutocracy inhabited by an idiocracy of much of the voting electorate resulting in a system that pretends to be a democracy.

@Hages We do. Plutocracy and that are pretty much the same thing.

There's still hope! They are counting the mail in ballots in Michigan and Pennsylvania. But I think you're right that it shouldn't be this close. I think if it had of been someone other than Biden, we would be in a much better position right now.
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 4, 2020:
@Zoltans_Queen Most people who would vote for a Dem don't want a return to normal, as in a repeat of Obama. They want an improvement on Obama instead of the lies about hope and change Obama offered. If Bernie was the nominee, not only would there be more excitement and enthusiasm, but there would also be tens of millions of poor and working class white people who currently DON'T vote (but are eligible voters) but WOULD vote for Bernie because he would offer them something other than not being Trump and a return to the lack of change under Obama. But the DNC doesn't care about that or winning the White House. All they care about is maintaining neoliberal economic policies and endless wars for empire and oil. We need a new party that actually represents the 99%. The Movement For A People's Party appears to be our best chance.

The Gravel Institute is right. Maybe they could make a video about the history of the Democratic Party and how it has failed working people for decades.
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 4, 2020:
The Dem Party threw working people under the bus after the 1988 election, about the same time the DLC was created. The latter group succeeded in making the party totally about serving corporations and getting their campaign donations. The group succeeded so well that it was dissolved after Obama was elected.

Looks like the same failed strategy of running a neoliberal from the Obama administration who has a lot of political baggage and isn't running on popular policy wasn't the slam dunk they were hoping for. Who could have seen that coming?
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 4, 2020:
I know you're being sarcastic here, but I, for one, sure saw it coming. In fact, I bet this would happen and will win a steak dinner out of it.

TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 4, 2020:
Even tho the corporate media would have all been against him, I still say that if Bernie had been the nominee, this would have been a landslide. But the DNC would rather lose with a corrupt corporate centrist than win with a progressive. Their strategy of doing this the last two times is not working, but they don't care, so they won't change their policy on this.

When there's a real chance that a pathological liar, racist, bigot, adulterer, crook who has spent the last four years dividing this country, alienating our allies, and doing nothing to help the middle class or poor might get re-elected for four more years... yea... some of us have tears of anger....

Are you suggesting that there was a time that mass media wasn't compromised?
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 3, 2020:
@William_Mary Mass media in the US was way more fair and balanced before the 1980s. But after that the huge amount of monopolization in media sources, combined with the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine, meant that alternative viewpoints on the left were pretty well marginalized and eliminated. Anybody remember labor news being covered as a regular part of the business news? I do, it was a dedicated part of it back in the 60s and 70s. The media also gave plenty of coverage and detailed stories about trade deals. Nowadays there is nothing about it the vast majority of newspapers, even tho it's a huge thing impacting everyone's life. But nowadays, trade deals are a hush hush secret that the peasants are not supposed to hear about.

There are a lot of people out there that think Glenn Greenwald is the hack and someone like Rachel Maddow is the great journalist. 90+% of mainstream media is owned by 6 corporations, and they're working on the other 10% or so lol. Also, there is a portion of the 10% that are just batshit crazy ...

Anyone who has doubts that taking big bucks from corporations or fat cat donors corrupts a news source just has to look at what happened to NPR since they began accepting corporate "underwriting" as in advertising, for their programs. Nowadays their reporting and commentary on news and politics are no different than CNN.

Do girls date guys that are fat
BitFlipper comments on Oct 26, 2020:
Of course! Fat girls date fat guys. It has long been an issue for women to feel objectified and valued only for their "looks". But now women are demanding perfection from men. And they spell it out clearly in their dating profiles, whereas men would be admonished for doing the same.
TomMcGiverin replies on Nov 3, 2020:
In other words, you are observing some hypocrisy on the part of women on dating sites. I am so shocked, shocked I tell you, to hear that....
