Conservative propaganda to scare the base and make sure they vote Repub in Nov.. These protests and any reform they might force in policing will not cost the rich or corporate America anything in the way of money or power, but they will probably succeed in fooling the masses into thinking we still have a functioning and responsive democracy when it comes to protest. What would really make the ruling class sweat would be a repeat of the Occupy movement that started in the spring and went all the way to winter with tens of millions out there on the streets. That would truly look like revolution against the 1%.

How many of you think Biden would have vetoed this biill,? [forbes.com]
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
He would veto it, Bernie wouldn't. Need to remember Biden told his rich donors way back when he announced his run that nothing would fundamentally change under him. Biden also would veto single payer/Medicare For All if by some miracle it passed. Biden will not support anything that offends the rich or corporate America. It's a moot point as I think he would lose to Trump and that he will be replaced anyway in August with the convention as the nominee. It happened in 1968 after Johnson dropped out and Humphrey was chosen to replace him as the nominee even tho Humphrey had not run in the primaries or won any delegates, so it can be done and the rules allow it. Things continue to look more and more like that year in other ways as well.

I will probably call her later this month to see where her head is at and if she is not planning to do massages anytime soon, I will ask her for referrals at least for the time being until she is back to work again.

Sanders to supporters: Refusing to back Biden is "irresponsible" - Axios
TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 6, 2020:
As far as I'm concerned, Bernie betrayed his supporters, at least this time if not last time, and ought to refund their campaign contributions as he once again caved to the party without fighting to get his policies included in the Dem platform and promised to be promoted by Biden. Bernie no longer has any credibility to me as he clearly cares more about having some status in the Senate than actually getting any power for progressives in the Dem party or in DC. Glad I didn't give him any money or volunteer this time as it would have been too heartbreaking.

TomMcGiverin comments on Jun 5, 2020:
I get what he was saying. White liberals are a barrier to solving the problems of race in America because the vast majority of them are fine with capitalism and their privileged status. They are not willing to share more of the society's economic benefits with blacks and they are fine with capitalism as it is. I am a proud socialist and I have little time or patience with white liberals either. They are a barrier as well for socialists who want America to have a fair economy for all races. White liberals allow the ruling class to keep the lid on and prevent civil war between races or revolution against the rich because the liberals keep pushing for multiculturalism and identity politics without real economic reform. This tricks a lot of lower class people of all races into thinking we are making progress towards being a more fair and equal society when in fact we are not. Our economics are way more unfair than they were even in the 1970s. As long as white liberals (who are usually members of the top 10% in wealth and income) keep identifying with and supporting the top 1%, we will never have any economic equality. Instead, we will keep getting fed policies from the Dem party to increase tolerance for queer people and racial minorities, but no improvement in how the income and wealth are (not) shared.

I am happy that Steve King is going to be gone in Jan., but that probably means the Repub that beat him in the primary will win the general election in Nov.. If King had won the primary, he probably would have lost the general. My choice for US Senate lost in the Dem primary, which is almost always the case for me. I can positively vote for the Dem nominee in the general for that. A very sad commentary on the closed society of the police forces.
TomMcGiverin comments on May 30, 2020:
I think there is a lot of truth to that. When the cops who police an area actually live in or near that area, they see the public, even those who break the law, as their neighbors and fellow citizens, unlike when the cops live far away from their policing area in neighborhoods that are way different both racially and classwise. These kind of differences determine whether the cops have a fortress mentality where the community they police are the "other" or their enemy, or instead whether they see the public as their neighbors and fellow citizens. Sometimes I think these issues are a bigger part of the problem than cops just plain being racists.

Like MLK said, when people who are oppressed feel unheard by those in power, they become violent. This kind of shit has been going on for more than a century and non-violent protest has not made it stop. The cold, hard fact is that what progress that was made in the 60s, temporary as it may have been, was because of the combination of peaceful protest and the violence that happened in the riots as well as the threat of violence the white power structure saw coming from the Black Panthers and other militant leftist groups.. Those in power decided to make some temporary concessions in order to avoid constant civil war in the US between the govt. and the radical groups as well as black Americans in the cities.

George Floyd was accused of trying to pass a fake $20.
TomMcGiverin comments on May 28, 2020:
When I watch this video and can feel the rage and helplessness of the bystanders I totally see why so many of the protestors feel they are unheard by the system in Minneapolis and want to destroy property that is connected to the cops, like the police station that burned tonite and the police cars that burned last night. How else can they feel heard or taken seriously when none of the cops have even been arrested, much less charged? If the system there wants peace, then arrest them and bring charges so the community feels there is appropriate action being taken and that justice might actually happen this time, unlike the vast majority of times that it doesn't in cases of white cops killing unarmed black men.
Is the left overly confident in the outcome of the 2020 elections?
TomMcGiverin comments on May 28, 2020:
I'm sure as hell not. The Dems always seem capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory by running bad candidates or bad campaigns when doing otherwise would have meant a sure win. Biden is a terrible candidate, as was Hillary, but the problem is not "the left". The problem is the DNC, which rigged things to make sure each of them got to be the nominee instead of Bernie. Right now Trump looks beatable, but that's before people being reminded more about Biden's faults, get more exposure to his dementia, and, if there ever is a debate, watch him get creamed by Trump as Joe tries to track the conversation and fails. My prediction is that Biden will be replaced in August by the DNC if the DNC really cares about winning in Nov.. ( After, of course, Joe drops out due to a "personal health emergency". The DNC already won, as far as they're concerned, by stopping Bernie. If Biden drops out he will be replaced by Cuomo or Warren and they will be able to win comfortably against Trump. But with Biden as the candidate, the Dems could easily lose no matter how bad Trump blows handling the pandemic and the economic crash. Trust me Paul, nobody I know on the left is apathetic. We are just disgusted and concerned about what a poor candidate Biden is, one of the worst of the 24 that began the primary race. I have no doubt that is by design of the DNC.

Violence as part of protest is never justified, but at the same time even I, a white man who is fully aware of my privilege that goes with that status, understand that there is only so much that a member of an oppressed minority can stand before the desire to strike back with rage and violence against the symbols of oppression, whether it's cops in riot gear, an empty police car, or a police station building. Same thing back in San Francisco after Dan White murdered Harvey Milk and was acquitted. Gay people smashed windows at city hall. Same with Treyvon Martin's murderer getting a walk. I know that if the shoe was on my foot I would not be able to stay non-violent forever when my oppressors kept getting away scot free with murder.

TomMcGiverin comments on May 25, 2020:
My view is that both him and Biden have some kind of dementia. Trump's is not as far along as Biden's and also that Trump was more of an asshole before dementia than Biden. But the fact remains that because of the system where both parties are owned by the same people and we are only allowed choices between loyal servants of the ruling class and corporate America, we have the dementia election of 2020. Neither candidate has a healthy functioning brain. That's why I hope and believe that the DNC will replace Biden in August, now that they have stopped Bernie, and replace him with someone sane and competent like Cuomo or Warren. If they do, then we will know that the DNC cares more about winning than stopping Bernie. Otherwise, we will know that all that mattered to them was stopping Bernie. Sorry Larry, but those two issues about values and politics would be deal-breakers for me and probably most of us on here. Glad you found out about these before you got very far with her.
Congratulations on keeping the hippie mindset.

This sketch is so funny and sick because all of it is so true. It makes me ashamed to be a boomer. Both generations have their faults and also share the same problem of having huge blind spots about their faults. I am proud to say that I never became either of the first two types of boomers. I met some good millenials at the Sanders campaign, but I doubt they are that typical of their generation, which is why the future looks bleak for my twilight years. Thanks for posting this. I tried watching SNL a few times in the last year and I have to say that little of the millenial humor in their sketches seems funny to me. Maybe I just don't appreciate or get the huge layers of snark that are part of every sketch and it's probably due to my age. As far as the two boomers portrayed with stereotypes, I have always hated the music of Jimmy Buffet as well as the song Joy To The World by Three Dog Night. Both of them represent the typical boomer that has no taste in music and the LCD music listener that corporate radio music has always catered to rather than those who prefer underground or alternative music styles. There have always been hipsters who preferred music that was offbeat or ahead of its time while the majority prefer the music that is safe and familiar rather than challenging and stimulating.

Pence came to my state, Iowa, today to visit the Repub guv Kim Reynolds. He praised her for her reopening efforts with the state's businesses and economy, even tho the latest models say our new cases will not peak until June 8. Thoroughly nauseating and shades of W.'s "heck of a job, Brownie" with Katrina relief..
More than 12,000 Catholic churches in the U.S. applied for PPP loans – and 9,000 got them
TomMcGiverin comments on May 8, 2020:
I'm embarrassed to say that the Unitarian Church that I am a nominal member of got one of those loans. They really did need the money as many of their members are unemployed and/or retired on small fixed incomes or otherwise employed in low wage jobs. As a result, about a fifth of their members did not return pledge forms for this year's pledge drive and the church was short about 70K on what they hoped to raise for the next year. To their credit, they are keeping all their staff on the payroll even tho they quit holding services and programming in person and they also provide fair benefits to their staff as well as good pay for a church. The church is a tax exempt non-profit the same as the United Way, for example.

Before age and all that cigarette smoking ruined her singing voice, she had the best female voice in pop and folk music. Better than Judy Collins or Joan Baez. She had a five octave range too.
Love this writer. What do you think about Capitalism’s voracious appetite?
TomMcGiverin comments on May 6, 2020:
At least in the US, this pandemic should make it clear that all of us peons are merely commodities that are easily replaceable and expendable to capitalism and the ruling class. However, most will probably not see the clear message and will instead fall for the partisan blaming game rather than blame their real enemies and rebel.

Where else in America (besides New York) will voters overwhelmingly reject pro-corporate politics?
TomMcGiverin comments on May 4, 2020:
Iowa can barely ever get comfortable with electing mainstream Dems, much less ever give socialists or progressives a chance. We have been a one-party (Repub) state since 2007, even tho the state did vote for Obama twice. The fact that Cuomo is still so popular in the state proves that voters may still be very comfortable with corporatist pols. Cuomo sure as hell is one as well as being a friend of the 1% rather than the 99%.
