I would not call it love and it never made it to a relationship but here is my Saturday afternoon ...
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 23, 2022:
WTF man, you live in rural MO, which is a lot like rural Iowa, only worse. Lots of hicks, rednecks, and white trash. I feel your pain, even tho I live in a suburb that's part of the largest city in Iowa. While my area isn't rural, like yours, most of the available women on the dating sites still are into the rural culture, where country music, kids and family, religion, and social drinking are all very important in who they will date. Also, because most of them grew up in rural Iowa, they also require their dating partners to be into camping and fishing, neither of which I am into, so culturally and lifestyle-wise, I'm a fish out of water in the dating pool. All I can say is, just like I have to, keep plugging and remember that not only are you way better than people like this woman and deserve someone better, but that there are also women out there in MO that are on your level and compatible. But, like me, you may need to adjust your criteria in who you will connect with and meet from a dating site.I don't know where you are on the MO map, but you might consider seeking women in the KC, St. Louis, or Columbia areas of your state, since they are more likely to be on your level. I have run across women living in rural Iowa towns, within less than an hour away from me, on Match, that seemed compatible with me, at least on paper. But I have not bothered with messaging them or meeting them, because, in my experience, if they are still living in some hick rural Iowa town, there is nothing there to do with them besides sit at home with them and binge shows, etc., since there is no culture or entertainment where they live. And the other thing is, if they are still living in Podunk, they probably will never move away from there, and also don't have the kind of money to ever be able to afford traveling with me to the places I would like to go eventually. Also, if they are living in Podunk, they may well be living with a relative or friend, out of financial necessity, and I don't want to deal with that either, by being an eventual meal ticket. Glad you went to the daughter's and got some instant support and affirmation. It's frightening that people like your date and her crowd are allowed to vote, but it goes a long way in explaining Josh Hawley....
'This is her store; we just work here': Meet the cat that has become a fixture at this Home Depot
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 23, 2022:
I've seen a few other store cats in my time. They all love the attention and know that their job is being cute and parading around for the customers. I also met a cat that lived at a nursing home, and her job was to comfort the dying residents. The cat had an uncanny sense of picking up on which residents were in their final days, and she would start hanging out in their room, standing guard and keeping them company until they died. Sort of an angel of death and comfort.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 22, 2022:
I have always been able to have good, healthy long term friendships with women over my life while single, and that has been a good thing, since it meets some of my social and emotional needs that are not met when I don't have a partner or am not actively dating steadily. The bad thing is, that those friendships are not really possible once or when one has a partner again. I think that women value those opposite, platonic friendships too, altho they usually have additional friendships with other women, unlike the single men. It's sad that opposite sex friendships always seem to fizzle out once either person finds their next dating partner, but it's better than nothing, because it helps fill the time of both parties, keeps them less isolated, and continues to give each of them some validation of their attractive qualities and worth as a person to another potential partner, since the dating game is so filled with rejection and discouragement, except maybe for those who are great looking, who get most of the interest from the other sex, and are usually doing the rejecting, rather than receiving rejection most of the time. I did listen to the whole thing, in parts, because the first third or so, was really kind of boring and not related to gender relations. Almost all of the rest was relevant, altho there was a segment about politics, the new form of terrorism thru inciting rhetoric.

Corporations Using Inflation As Cover To Raise Prices [youtube.
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 20, 2022:
Support of this unfair system, favoring the rich and corporations, is fully bipartisan, and Reich needs to say the Dems are equally to blame. Both parties have pretty much the same corporate donors, so the Dems are equally guilty of not wanting to do windfall profits taxes, they just blame the Repubs for blocking what they themselves don't want to do. Vote Blue all you want to, it won't change anything for things related to class warfare against us or the rigged economy. All Dems will do is say they will improve things, but their actions are no different than the Repubs. Don't listen to what they say, look at their inaction....

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 17, 2022:
Those women are making the naive or innocent assumption, of mistakenly thinking that Repub pols are capable of feeling shame or giving a damn about their own obvious hypocrisy. Experienced observers of Repub pols, already know those pols are immune to feeling shame about, or ever admitting, their clear hypocrisy... To me, it is incredibly ironic that the same party that crucified Bill Clinton (not that I ever really liked him or that I haven't hated him for years) for being a bimbo-chasing manwhore and committing sexual perjury, is the party that now promotes and protects Hershel Walker, along with other sexual hypocrites. Their capacity for arrogance and double standards is beyond belief.

Luckily, it doesn't really apply to me. I did play sports a lot when I was young, but my knees always stayed healthy. They pop a bit when I first get out of bed in the morning, but nothing else really. Probably due to me never playing football in school, which I hear is brutal on the knees...
I haven't interviewed in a long time, but I always hated this question.
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 17, 2022:
One big reason for age discrimination, at least for jobs with health insurance benefits, is that older workers cost more for the employer to insure, so they prefer to hire people who are younger and cheaper, preferably with plenty of student debt, so they are easier to treat like slaves and push around. The other reason is that older workers have more experience, as well as strong opinions, and are less willing to let themselves be pushed around like younger workers. So your convo between the old man and HR manager, is right on the money. I am so glad to be retired now. I used to even fantasize about getting even with the pricks and bitches I dealt with back when I had to go looking for jobs, and all the games they played with me, along with lying to me. I dreamed that after retiring I would apply for jobs and pretend to want a job if I ever got a chance to interview, then go thru the motions of the interview, waste their time, and then, on the way out the door, tell them off and reveal that I was happily retired and had no intention of working again. There would really be no legal action they could take against me for it, but I'm sure it would quickly result in me being placed on an employer alert list of sorts that would clue every Chamber Of Commerce member in the local area, about my game. So I wouldn't be able to use it more than a time or two at most. So I decided it was not worth the trouble, even if I would get my revenge on at least one asshole employer...

I'm a bit conflicted on this one. I get it that you want to be with people that have some capacity for playfulness, like the meme suggests, but on the other hand, not everybody is into mainstream pop or rock music. So if you are someone more like the latter, in your music taste, then maybe someone who shares that with you would not be a negative influence in your life, but maybe another kindred soul that you belong with.

It would be nice to hear the teacher was fired over it, but that would surprise me in this day and age. It reminds me of the idiot MAGA hat-wearing Trumper I used to see at my local senior center that I got into it with about a year ago. I found it really disturbing that he used to be a school teacher in my town, to think of what kind of values he was likely to be teaching his students before he retired recently. What's more scary is that in my heavily Repub town, he is probably pretty common among local teachers in his thinking and politics.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 14, 2022:
I understand how tempting a case like this is to want to have the death penalty, but with how unevenly it is applied to racial minorities and the poor, compared to killers that are white and/or rich, it doesn't seem worth having, to me, as an option. And there is also the issue of how governments use the death penalty for trumped up, non-violent offenses to kill and silence their political enemies and critics.

Call me a Luddite, but I don't see the movie as being that terribly, just somewhat, exaggerated, when it comes to how seduced by and dependent most people are on their smartphones. It really isn't that hard to get by without one, and to just use a tracphone, rather sparingly, instead. I am able to keep my focus on where I am, what I am thinking, and who I am with, rather than being constantly distracted or dependent on a smartphone. Most people are very hooked on their smartphone, and on being connected to the net and the rest of the social world every waking hour of the day, and don't realize it at all. Glad I have more awareness and self discipline than them.
Lawyer fined $400,000 for warning school about predator priest on staff
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 13, 2022:
That is one of the tough things about being a lawyer, namely that you often have to maintain confidentiality and not reveal things that are privileged between you and your clients, as well as information that is under seal by a court, as this information was, as part of the investigating committee the lawyer was on. It all comes down to choosing which principle to honor, the rules of the court and the law, or the public good. In this case, the lawyer chose the latter, and paid the price, literally, for violating the rules of the court. He also could have very easily been disbarred over it. I hope he doesn't end up having that happen, as we need lawyers like him that are willing to self sacrifice in the name of the public good.

Stories like this don't surprise me at all, in fact this sort of shit, white people feeling jealous of the success or property of others who were not white and minority races continued all the way thru the internment of Japanese American citizens during WWII. It came out years later that a big reason the internment occurred, was that many white farmers in California had been coveting the farmland of those Japanese American farmers for years, and the war with Japan, along with the internment, finally gave them the opportunity they had been looking for to steal the land away from these immigrant farmers. Of course, it all began with the stealing of land away from Native Americans, by white settlers and their government.

Nice to see you back here on the boards, Stephanie. Your perspective was missed, at least by me.. I can relate somewhat to the bind you are in, whether it's worth it to go out and enjoy an activity you like and yet probably, in order to do that, have to put up with some stuff you don't want or like. I love to go out and sing karaoke, esp. if I have at least one friend with me to sit with, talk with, and listen to each other sing the kind of music we like. I hate country music, but where I live, country music is king, and much as I would like to find one, there are no karaoke shows that don't have at least some country music sung there. So my choice is to either stay home, or do online karaoke, which is boring to me, or else go to public karaoke shows at bars and put up with some amount of country music being sung, the only ? is how much of the music will be country. The choice I make is to go sing, try to always line up at least one friend to join me that likes the same music genres as me, and if I can't have a companion like that, bring a book I can read during the country songs!

Maybe I'm too much of a romantic. Maybe I'm just too old to get or relate to this. Or maybe I have just not had enough bad, long term relationships to join in or relate to all the snark and bitterness I constantly hear from divorced people who are single. Maybe they should consider that not everybody's long term relationships ended up in bitter divorce or breakup. My one LTR ended because my wife inherited a horrible, progressive, terminal disease. Otherwise, I would still likely be happily married, at least for another ten years or so, since she was 15 years older than me, but in otherwise good health. So pardon me if I don't find this type of humor funny or relateable....

Living in GA these days has got to be really hard for anybody like us. I generally don't angry at the religious, only when they either make a big deal about being morally superior to non-believers and try to then oppress us with their theocratic laws, or when they get involved in running for office and either pretend to be more righteous and moral than they are or try to push theocratic laws and policies down our throat. If they stay out of politics and public bashing of non-believers, I don't give a fuck what they do in their churches or private lives, but if they start trying to dominate or control me or us, then it's political war, baby, and I will fight them whenever I can.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 8, 2022:
I would be careful not to underestimate him and see him as a fool. I remember how many people, including me, saw W. (Bush) as the dim-witted chimp he was, and thought there was no way he would beat Gore, but he did, at least officially in the end. But there was no way it should have even been close that election. Yet, even tho he was an ignorant dimwit, W. proved to be so likeable to most Americans, Gore ran such a shitty campaign, losing even his home state, and Gore proved to be such an unlikeably know-it-all type to many voters, that he still managed to lose a race that he should have won fairly easily. Another factor was that Slick Willie Clinton had already alienated many Americans with his scandals and dishonest behavior, that Gore ended up being punished at the polls for what Clinton had done, including NAFTA and ending traditional welfare, both of which betrayed the working class and poor folks, so they took it out on Gore.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 5, 2022:
I don't find it funny either, I find it embarrassing and pathetic. The only people I have found who seem to strongly feel Biden does not have dementia, are Dem Party loyalists and other defenders of the economic status quo, such as the corporate media, who hate Bernie and his ideas for reforming the economic inequality in America, but are just fine with the Dem Party's substitution of identity politics and culture war issues on the liberal side for any real or meaningful class warfare or reform on the economic, taxation, or foreign policy side, such as ending wars of choice for good. Everybody else, including me, could easily see as far back as the primary season for 2020, both in his debates against Bernie and the other primary candidates, as well as his very limited primary campaign appearances back then, that Biden had early stage dementia, something I am intimately familiar with, since my mother had dementia in the final few years of her life from a stroke, and my late wife had a rare and relative rapid form of it the last several years of her life. I also met, thru an Alzheimer's support group for patients that my wife attended for about a year or so early in her dementia, about a dozen or so other dementia patients. Since he became prez, Biden has again gone back to having relatively few public appearances, and when he does them, they are very scripted, much more brief than most presidents, and has even fewer press conferences, where he actually takes ?s he isn't prepared for, than Trump did in his first two years in office. I won't even go into the embarrassing incidents Biden has had where he got caught getting confused when he was asked ?s at the press conference and then began reading off the wrong note cards his staff had prepared for him to use in answering the ?s they thought he would be asked. He currently appears to be no better right now than Reagan was cognitively in Reagan's first term, which we now know was a time when he too was already experiencing dementia. The only difference is that, Reagan was a trained actor who had decades of being used to being able to read a script and fake things, while Biden is not as experienced at that as Reagan was and is also a stutterer, so he doesn't cover his dementia as well. He also is undoubtedly on cutting edge dementia drugs that were not available to Reagan in the 80s, so his dementia may well be further along than Reagan's as far as the actual condition of his brain. Who knows? I do know, from my wife's experience and what I learned about dementia drugs, is that all they can do, to my knowledge, is delay the symptoms that appear from the brain's deterioration, but not the actual deterioration of the brain, so that once the drugs are stopped, or quit working, the patient's decline is ...

The police need to buy a sense of humor. This merely proves what we all already know, that most cops are bullies with a badge, and get off on having power over others. So it's no surprise to me that they couldn''t take a joke, so they went after this guy hard.

TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 4, 2022:
You also don't list alternative rock, which is quite different than most mainstream rock or classic rock, so your poll really doesn't give me an option that represents my true tastes. You also don't list country, but I've got a feeling that country is probably about the least popular genre among members here, mainly because of how religious it is, along with how politically and culturally conservative it is.

Why is it that I always nearly max out these age related lists?

I would have to agree I know the vast majority of these, but not all of them. Anybody older than 50 will know way more than 16 of them.

50 and 60 bring on even more changes.
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 3, 2022:
Older age and body changes didn't happen quite that fast or drastically, at least for me, but the point is taken and does apply. The real milestone was age 45, where my body started to hurt and bother me too much to keep playing full court basketball anymore. And because of that, by age 50, I had lost my flat belly for the first time ever, never to return.

So true on both counts. I have met so many tech people that are inevitably conservatives or Libertarians, because they have never studied any liberal arts or humanities courses, so they know nothing of history, economics, sociology, poli sci, philosophy, etc, and think there is a technical solution to everything, so they vote for technocrat and fascist leaders. And they totally think that money is everything and that the strong should be able to run over the weak and everybody else, same as the rich over everybody else. And they love dog eat dog competition, since they were always the smartest kids in school, so they are glad to work for corporations that exploit most of them, because their kind would never join any unions in their industry, since individualism reigns supreme with them. Yes, they are a curse on our society when it comes to politics and the atomizing of our society.

Why So Many Spiritual People Refuse To Call Themselves 'Religious' | John Cappello | YourTango
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 2, 2022:
The online dating sites recognize this and Match has the religious affiliation category, along with Christian, Catholic, etc. of Spiritual, but not religious as one of the label choices for members to use for themselves. I use it because, frankly, where I live, being labeled Agnostic is not only seen as a red flag by most women who grew up here, even if they are not very religious, but most people where I live are too ignorant to even know what the label Agnostic means. So I cop out and use the first label simply to avoid outright rejection and give myself a chance to get my foot in the door, so to speak, and allow myself to be considered and for the woman to get a chance to get to know me more before springing the label Agnostic on her during either the messaging phase or the first in person meeting. I have found that if I delay it like that, most women are ok with the Agnostic label by then, tho some aren't. If the woman is only moderately religious, they usually are not put off by the label Agnostic later on, but if they are strongly religious, and are hiding that in their profile, they end up rejecting me anyway, every time.
I love this!
TomMcGiverin comments on Oct 1, 2022:
That is so true, it's all about supply, demand and location. Unfortunately, I live in a shitty, mismatched dating pool for me, where guys with my traits and type have a very low supply of women who are compatible, and thus, little demand for my type around here in the dating game. Which leaves me with only two other options, neither of which are really viable or worth the trouble, moving away to a better dating pool, like Chicago or Minneapolis (and leaving behind my local friends which are my only support system), or dating long distance, which I have looked into in the past and nobody I connected with was interested in doing that with me. So, I am stuck with being the 50 cent bottle of water that sits on the shelf past its expiration date... But I bet if I had above average looks, instead of average looks, more women would overlook my offbeat traits and be willing to date me. Same if I had more money and wanted to play Sugar Daddy, which I would never do. But that is the reality of the dating game, if you don't have great looks, won't be or can't be a Sugar Daddy, and are mismatched on traits with the vast majority of your local dating pool. You are the drink that is an unpopular flavor and not cheap enough to compete with the more popular flavors on the local market. It also doesn't help that I have three guys for every woman in my local dating pool, that are in my age range. I have done the test for this three times where I used the library's computers to set up a dummy female profile and run a search of men that matched the traits I am seeking in a woman, that are compatible with my traits in my profile. So what are we supposed to do, Chicago gal that is the OP here? Move to another, better dating pool? Waste our time trying to date LD? Or just sit on the shelf waiting to expire and die alone?

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 29, 2022:
Or maybe the farmer, as are most people here in Iowa and the Midwest in general, is too "Iowa Nice" or, as I see it, too chickenshit to actually speak up and voice a negative opinion on anyone. You don't live in my area of the country, where most people are infuriatingly too chickenshit to confront anyone or speak a negative opinion about anyone, esp. to their face. Unless they are really angry. So, I must dissent from the bandwagon opinion that this farmer is so fucking wise.... Some people are generally nice, friendly, and tolerant, others are usually assholes, and how they act is usually not that dependent on who they are living around or encountering from time to time.

Not only do they want to exploit these immigrants for political gain, I know for a fact that these Repub motherfuckers will turn around and hire these undocumented immigrants for their cheap labor while in the same breath bashing them as criminals, etc. I personally worked at a plant several years ago owned by a man who is one of the biggest Repub donors in my state. His son was the president of the company and it was an open secret that many of the guys he hired there were in the country illegally. And this was after years earlier, the company had layed off or fired most of its workers here, and outsourced almost all of its production work to Taiwan. I guess for Repub business owners, you can never cut costs enough, or get cheap enough labor to make you happy with your profits....

Vote away all you want, just don't have any illusions that it will really change anything at the federal level not related to culture war issues like abortion and identity politics stuff like gays, God, etc.. Because if you do, you will be quickly disappointed by the corporate Dems who have all the power in that party. Nope, that would be considered a waste of money and, besides, it wouldn't be as profitable for a few rich people as crashing something into an asteroid or the military blowing up something in a foreign country, so that another American contractor could later rebuild it.

TomMcGiverin comments on Sep 28, 2022:
I would also add that 2 or 3 conglomerates control almost all of the dating sites and apps., so no wonder the products and services keep getting shittier all the time, while the prices keep going up. They don't give a shit at all about helping people actually connect and find compatible partners, they just care about raking in as much money as possible... That is the American way of business these days, buy or eliminate your competition, then make your product or service as cheap as possible for you, since you have no real competition, then raise the prices all you want, because you can and your customers have no where else to go that is better or cheaper.

Gotta love Texas, where they love their guns and both people on the right and the left are usually packing heat... To me, the one good thing about it is that with the queer folks on the left packing guns, the cops are way less likely to risk brutalizing them the way they did with the unarmed BLM protesters. Armed protesters are more likely to keep the cops honest about how they deal with them... Esp. after seeing how chickenshit and cowardly the cops were in that school shooting down there.

Vote away all you want to.... But in federal elections it will make little difference on anything but culture war issues, as both major parties serve the same corporate donors. In state and local elections, voting might actually make a difference on issues of economics, taxes, and public spending, so concentrate on those races in voting.
