I feel your pain. I've quit lots of times, and the longest was when my kids were young and my wife and I had quit together. Losing a job and a wife inspired me to start up again, and I guess I'll quit sometime.

Family "kin or not" was important where I grew up, too. Though not "the South" it was close enough. My network of relationships still relies on "family", though my brother was adopted, and all the "family" he and I adopted are not blood, they are what's important. This story rings true.

I would love to have grandkids, but I don't yet, even though I'm 63. My oldest married woman who already had kids, but they are grown, so it doesn't feel like "grandkids" because of that, and because they aren't related to me. My other son is married but has no kids yet, and I don't think he's ready for that anyway. And my daughter is only 21.
