A little personal anecdote here that may interest many. In April, 2000 while my daughter was going through Chemotherapy ( I was with her 24/7 btw), I had the opportunity to fulfill one of life-long wishes, the being to go out and watch the whales as they migrated around South Australian waters. I was lucky in that I found the Captain of Fishing Trawler who had retired from fishing and had set his boat up as a Whale Watching boat instead. After telling him what I was trying to do, he agreed that he could take Lorrae, myself and 8 other children plus a nurse out to see if we could find any whales, the cost surprised me, he was asking a mere $5.00 per head and would supply both a Morning, a Lunch and an Afternoon Tea for everyone as well. We were about 30 miles out from land when a Hump-back broke the surface followed by a smaller one, which we later were told was most likely her Calf. The kids were awestruck as the whale was only about 150-200 yards away from the boat, but things changed for the better when the Hump-back turned slowly and seemed quite deliberately to move towards the boat with the kids along the port side railings. She and her calf, then began to swim around the boat in slowly decreasing circles until she reached the side of the boat, stopped and 'hovered' in the water actually touching the boat. A few mments went by and and then this huge flipper of hers came out of the water and she rested on the railings right were the kids were as if asking the everyone to pat/stroke her flipper.
