@PalacinkyPDX Or, in numerous cases a Church or village Meeting Hall as well. The S.S. favored the open-pit method and they used the next group of victims to cover up the first before shooting them as well, sometimes 3 or more 'layers' of victims would be in those 'pits' and then the soldiers would add the final layer of soil.

@Closeted The Nazi actually destroyed a great deal of their records, the tally taken at the capture of the Death Camps was just an estimate at best. There would be still unknown mass grave sites throughout occupied Europe containing hundreds, if not thousands, of human remains, shot by the S.S. alone. One captured journal that springs to mind is that of an S.S. UberSturmFuhrer, Kurt Hiesel, who boasted that he had " personally ordered and overseen the slaughters of a total of 197,000 men, women and children from 161 separate villages throughout Poland and western Russia in just 11months. The victims were ordered to dig the mass graves and then shot one by one, young children and babies were buried ALIVE with their dead mothers/parents. Hiesel was captured by the Russians at a small village in west Russia, tried and executed 3 days later, his body was burnt and buried in an unmarked place afterwards.

Actually, and according to my paternal Grand-father who's father sailed with the likes of Nelson, the 'brass monkey' is the plate fitted to the deck of the old wooden sailing ships of war, the balls referred to the iron cannon balls stacked on the brass plate in a pyramid shape ( you were correct on that bit) and when the weather became extremely cold and ice formed on the decks the plate would get a layer of slippery ice and the cannon balls would often slide off the 'monkey.'

Ah yes, the Pommie run carnage of ANZAC troops that should never have happened. I had a Great-Uncle who served at Gallipoli, he was shot twice, once by a Turk ( which gave him the wound that sent him home,) and once by a Pommie Officer while him and two of his mates were return from a reco, all because the Pom Officer couldn't quite remember the password. I had 2 Uncles who served in WWII, 1 in the European/African Theatre and 1 in the Pacific Theatre with the Yanks. Uncle Dave served at the Battle of Tobruk, started off as private, got promoted to a Sergeant, then got demoted back to the ranks simply because he shot a Pommie Officer in the bum, the Pommie was outside of the lines one night trying to find his way back to his tent, stopped for a shit and poked his bum up in the air while pulling his pants back up, being on sentry duty and given FIRM orders to shoot ANYTHING moving in the 'No Mans Land region' Uncle Dave obeyed the orders to the letter, took aim and fired, as he once told me, " at the biggest part of the body he could see." No-one ever found out if the Pommie ended up with 'brain' damage though. When both uncles got together they'd compare notes on the 'allies' they served with and both would agree that the only ally worse than a Pom was a Yank.

@GuyKeith We don't usually get tornados down here, but I remember a bloody massive Willy-Willy ( tornado like whirling dust spiral) that came through this area of Broken Hill once, it actually lifted the outside toilet in the neighbor's yard off the ground and dumped into our backyard, the neighbors young daughter was sitting on the dunny at the time, luckily she wasn't hurt in any way, but she was terribly shaken up though. Willy-Willies around here can range from small, relatively harmless spirals through to ones around 10 - 15 metres across tearing fences to pieces as they go and even lifting small sheds, etc, off the ground.

@Beowulfsfriend Around 30 years ago a good friend, a recognized Archaeologist from the A.N.U., showed me dozens of photos taken by her and members of her team of Indigenous Australian Rock Paintings found in a cave on the N.W. Australian coastline, the paintings have dated to approx. the mid to late 14th - early 15th centuries and show a 'fleet' of at least a dozen ships closely resembling large Chinese Junks anchored off the shore. Their Aboriginal Guide and Elder told them of an ancient story where " many small men with yellow ochre skin came ashore and greeted the people with friendly smiles and spent many days amongst them before returning to the sea." When her team attempted to publish their findings, etc, they were summarily hoo-hooed by the Faculty to the point that the Government even stepped in and BANNED them from publishing their findings. She and her team subsequently resigned from the A.N.U. and are now working in various Archaeological fields elsewhere in the world.

Lots of it? If it's been parched dry, wouldn't a slow, gentle rain be the best? Fast and furious rains can cause flash floods that lead to soil erosion rather than being absorbed by the soil.
Triphid replies on Jan 26, 2019:
The countryside really needs about 3-4 days of slow and steady rain first, then a week of dry but not overly hot weather followed again by 3-4 days of steady rain and that's just to allow the vegetation enough moisture to start to regenerate enough to feed the animals out here in Far Western New South Wales. My friends Sheep Property about 50kms north of here has been dry for so long that Red Gum trees are shedding branches that are well over 20 -60 years old in an effort to survive. As for the utter disaster that once was the Great Darling River, well 2 main things are needed URGENTLY to save that river from extinction; 1) a complete cessation and removal of ALL dams, weirs and barricades made by Rice and Cotton Growers north of Bourke, those growers are literally allowed to SUCK the river dry by the Governments, 2) massive rainfall episodes to occur in the Darling River Catchments in Queensland and unobstructed flows to be let run down through the Darling River, fill the Menindee Lakes STORAGE System to capacity as they were originally design and legislated to be and then let flush the river of the toxic Blue-Green Algae blooms that are killing the fish and poisoning the water. Hey, here's a thought, MAYBE we could start pumping our MUCH needed water from Lake Burley Griffin in the A.C.T. to replace the water the Government has allowed the Cotton and Rice Cockies to STEAL from us.

@OtherPatrick I still have a 'landline' phone, but very much modern these days, NO cell/mobile phone though since I like to be without one such thing that everyone EXPECTS you to have around at all times. Sadly, but humorously at times, I often get calls on the landline from someone twat who dialed the wrong number. One such call was from a woman who wanted to speak to 'Ethel' so I simply told her that there was no more Ethel, I had had a sex change and was now called Ethelred the Ruthless, haven't heard from her since....LOL.

@CS60 Maybe you might like to learn a bit of 'Strine' to help you along; Swag- the bedroll carried around by a Swagman/Swaggie, Swagman- an itinerant traveling person who would wander from place to place, get enough work to get a few meals and fill his tuckerbag then move on again, Tuckerbag - usually a hessian or sometimes leather sack with a rope strap sewn to it to hang over the shoulders whilst walking, Billy - a tin pot, usual capacity of about 1-2pints used for boiling water to make tea, etc, blacken with the soot of many campfires, Sundowner- opposite of a Swaggie, he only arrives just before sunset, cadges a meal and them leaves before sunrise so as to avoid doing any work in return for the hospitality given, Bluey or Mathilda - another common title/name for the 'accoutrements' carried by Swaggies and Sundowners, Cow Cocky/Cockies - Graziers running cattle instead of sheep, Jumbuck - derived from the words jump and buck, habits that sheep often exhibit when startled, meaning a sheep in particular, Squatter - an owner of large/great stretches of pastural land for grazing sheep in particular, " Keeping Cocky," - a criminal terminology for a lookout on the watch for the 'Boys in Blue' (Police), Drop me a gumleaf if you'd like to know more.

The abuse is far worse since it has a life-long effect on the victim, even to the point of driving them to suicide, alcoholism, drug dependencies, self-harming and innumerable other detrimental effects. The culture of covering it up is CRIMINAL, to say the very least, the abusers rely and depend upon the culture of covering it up, e.g. the Catholic Church, that is why they are so prolific.

Triphid replies on Jan 18, 2019:
@MissKathleen Yeah, I collect seeds from native trees, and other non-natives as well from time to time, both in and around my area plus from trees growing in the bush when I'm out there. Native trees are better to grow in this region because they've evolved and grown acclimatized to the regions weather conditions, etc. For example, the common Red Gum found around my region can grow and survive for well over 100+ years, it can send its tap root down well over 30 metres through soil and rock so it can reach the water table when times are very dry, it can grow to over 20 metres in height and twice that in spread of branches, it can drop branches during drought times, re-generate after bushfires have burned off its leaves, etc, and native birds and some native animals like possums will make their homes in the stumps where the branches have been shed, especially cockatoos and galahs because they wil actually use their beaks to hollow out the stumps, deepen them and then build their nests inside those hollows for as long as the tree still stands, which may mean that generations after generations will use the same nest over and over. I would NOT recommend growing native Red Gums in any suburban yard, especially closer to a house or structure, than at least 7 - 10 metres from that structure since the sub-surface roots can grow outwards to a least twice the spread of the tree, they expand as they grow and can easily lift up concrete paving, cause severe cracking to walls and foundations, tear apart water and sewage pipes, etc. In my front yard I have 3 Cypress Pines, aka Pencil Pines, that were recently dendro-dated to approx. the year 1900, this house was built in 1898 btw, and I regularly collect the seeds from them as well in an effort to preserve their 'heritage."

In my wood heater, 2 years older than I am btw, when I use Red Gum the house temp rises from an outside temp of around 5-10 Celsius to a lovely warm 23-25 Celsius but the Red Gum usually last about 2 hours per log around 12 inches long and 4 - 5 inches in diameter, the Mulga, much denser and harder than the gum, lasts for up to 4 hours per log of the same size and leaves a bed of hot coals in the firebox for the morning.
