For quite a few years I was a Tutor in a programme called T.T.A.L.L. ( Teach, Talk to a Literacy Learner) at the Public School near where I live. Sadly, many of the other 'Tutors" selected and took on ONLY the Easy or relatively easy cases, i.e. kids with very minor learning problems or difficulties. Me, always being one to shirk a challenge, I took on 5 of the hardest cases of them all. Thought up, designed and even paid for from OWN pocket a Rewards system to encourage my students. Absolutely no Boasting, Bragging nor Blowing my own Trumpet here BUT of the 5 of my Students, 1 is now a Researcher at the C.S.L. Triphid replies on Dec 18, 2020:
@Admin Of course genes/genetics play a big role in how we look, how we turn out since IF they did NOT would we not all look pretty much the same? I also think you might well find that ALL Homo Sapiens carry the same/ similar genes BUT it IS how that genomes combine that actually make those subtle/not so subtle differences. If I remember correctly we ARE basically a combination of 4 main genetic chemicals, those being A.G.C. and T., it is how those arrange themselves that decides how we have become who and what we are. You, for example, share genes both from your mother and your father as well as from their parents and their parents before them and so on back through your familial history just as we all do. Why even a puppy born today, right at this very second, will have genes that trace back to the earliest of its canine ancestors and even further back to even the very earliest forms of life that started this whole thing off in the first place. The problem, as I se it, with all the hoo-haha in regards to the subject of the O.P. is that there are still, unfortunately, those that see/view Genetics/Genetic Research, etc, as being akin to Eugenics OR as Science and Scientists TRYING to "Play at being God." Those unfortunately deluded peoples have not come to nor able to come to the understanding that, a) God never truly existed EXCEPT in the minds of those who created the idea, and, b) sciences and Scientists are NOT trying to play at being God or anything even remotely Divine -like, they ARE trying their darnedest understand, adjust and even rectify, if at possible, the errors made by Evolutionary Processes.

He even had 2 jars filled with Industrial grade diamonds that came from, and still do, the local mines. Plus his treasured jar of of small bits of gold also found in the local mines. Back in 80's when I was working on the Railways there were 2 specially 'adapted' Ore Wagons that arrived on the first Tuesday over every month, were loaded on the Wednesday and returned to the Smelting Plant on the Thursday. Each wagon had a hinged false floor, under that, in a space measuring 18" in height and going the width and length of the wagon there were 30 locked and sealed leather bags, each weighing around 2.5 kilograms, 15 were marked with the letters AU and 15 with the letters CD ( Au- Gold, CD-Cadmium). We all found this information out when we called out to derailment at one of the 2 Mining Lease where a section of broken rail had pierced the bottom of one of wagons. It was the first EVER time we had to work on repairing and re-railing an Ore wagon with Armed Guards watching our every move AND being searched after we had finished work. I mean they NEVER went to that much trouble when a Freight Container fell off a flat wagon with a cargo of around $5,000,000 of gold coins inside of it. Btw, that was locked up tighter than Fort Knox anyway but we knew how read the shipping contents slip on trucks as part of our jobs.

I went with him when he took it a local 'Rock-Hound' and the haggled for an hour over the price, he ended up getting the equivalent of, in todays decimal money, of $300 for it. i wish my 'darling (???) mother had kept his collections rather than just tossing them out when he died, he was a bit of a 'Rock-Hound' and had a big collection of specimens of all kinds of minerals and crystals that he'd found in the mines. Plus, since I was born in the early 50's I often use both the Metric and the Imperial from time to time. plus, out here in Aussie Outback we still measure our snakes in feet and inches BUT ONLY after they are dead of course.

@azzow2 Must have been an ancient forest somewhere around your region then that was buried during a flood or some other disaster. This area of Australia was once on the edge of a massive shallow sea that stretched from north to south through the middle of the continent millions and millions of years ago when the lands were covered in forests, etc. Some Geologists, etc, theorize that the Broken Hill region was once a long dead now submarine volcano with its caldera measuring at about 2.5 -5 miles in diameter before the sea levels dropped and the lands around here dried out. They'd be pretty close to correct, imo, since one of the big problems around here is a kind of 'rising salt damp' that leaves a white crust on the ground surface. That comes from deep underground when heavier than usual rains cause it leech upwards to the surface, it even still tastes of sea water and NOT just ordinary salt. There are even places around here where actual, fossilized marine shells can still be found laying on the surface or in exposed rock layers. just a few miles W.S.W. of town there are 3 distinct outcrops known as the Pinnacles that Geologists theorize are the remnants of the volcanic plug/s.
If I ever started a religious organization, I’d mandate free ice cream at our churches.

@azzow2 Have found a few bits and pieces of petrified wood myself from time to time. The only way I know that they can cut is by using an Industrial Diamond tipped Lapidary Saw that needs the blade to be cooled by water being sprayed on it constantly while it is being used or the blade overheats and explodes. According to a bit of research I've done you can also use either specially made chains on chainsaws or specially made disc blades on what we call "Quick Cut Saws" they also need water sprayed on them to keep the chains/blades cool as well though. The last piece of petrified wood I found was petrified She Oak, I had it cut, it was only about 6" long and about 3" wide, by a Lapidary Dealer here in town. 2 pieces were sent for testing and dating, the rest I gave to my nephew, Henry, as a birthday gift. The dating results stunned me, they dated at roughly 1.3 - 1.5 million years old. She-oak btw, is a species of Casuarina trees.

Between the 2 of us we could easily manage to cut split, load and deliver around 4-5 tons of timber, firewood per day using just axes, cross-cut saws, hammers and wedges.

@UUNJ Do you stand the log to be split upright, ( end up) or laying length-ways (flat) on the ground? The reason I asks is because all logs are at their weakest ALONG the length of the grain, i.e. the grain runs as the tree grows, from bottom ( roots system) to top and branches have their grain running from tree trunk to the end of the branch. Those logs you pictured look as though they've been cut with fairly level ends, so on any flat, solid surface they'd stand fairly square. What I also have is an indentation in the ground, just wide enough to take most average sized logs and about 3-4 inches deep, that holds the logs up-right and to keep them balanced and steady IF needed I use my feet, in solid boots of course, as clamps on either sides of the log. Kind of a skill I learned from my years in the Aussie Outback and also from my Native Aussie ancestors and friends, they had no clamps, etc, until Europeans arrived so they used what they had to hand or feet should I say. As my Dad used to tell me, when there's a problem, think about it, think of what you have available, think of what you can do with what you have and the solution will come to you.
well, I'm taking a chance here, so forgive me if it may be the wrong chance as well.

@azzow2 Yeah but isn't the firewood you people burn most of the soft-semi-soft wood varieties? Over here, most of ours are of the hard-very hardwood varieties and, NO joke here, I've seen the very best of both Hydraulic and Mechanical Wood Splitters throw in the towel trying to split even Red Gum and hydraulic ones actually BURST their pressure barrels when used to split Mallee or Iron-bark logs. Blimey, I've even tried myself to cut up Mulga logs using a well sharpened axe and after a dozen or so really hard, decent swings seen not even a slight nick in the log. But when splitting any log, ALWAYS look for the direction, etc, in which the grain of the wood runs and split by following the grain as well. By doing it that way I can and often do split a Red Gum log of around 18" - 2' feet in diameter in smaller, easily manageable sized pieces without breaking into a sweat. Plus, as with most things mechanical splitters, they can 'stuff up' least when you need them the most and then you are truly "up shit creek without a paddle."

A steel Lump hammer weighs about a pound or less, costs way less than most mechanical splitters and takes a whole lot less storage space. Method I learned the hard way of using either a Sledge hammer or a Lump hammer is to swing it from the shoulder, NOT from the elbow because you get far more striking power from the shoulder than the elbow. Using my 'lazy method ' of splitting I can fill 2 wheelbarrows to the brim in less than an hour and that also includes wheeling them to where I want stack the woods as well.

Me too, though I had to cut, split and stack old Railway ties ( hardwood) and old Mining timbers used underground for framing, etc, in the tunnels. 2 wheelbarrow loads every morning 7 days a week, 3 every afternoon 7 days a week and when my father was around and not hundreds of feet underground in the Mine at least he'd give me a hand as well.

Triphid replies on Dec 16, 2020:
@UUNJ I do my wood splitting the lazy way, instead of swinging a hatchet or an axe, I sit on a solid crate with a Lump hammer in one hand and a bag of steel wedges ( old and sharpened axe-heads mostly) beside me and 2 Wheelbarrows within easy arm reach. The method is simple, Place log to be split standing end up in front of you, Take a wedge/axe-head, give it a few taps with the Lump Hammer until it's firmly stuck in the wood, 3-4 hefty whacks with hammer after that and voila, split log plus any chips and slivers that break off the log are ready made kindling. ALSWAY wear good solid leather gloves to protect your hands.

Well by all accounts Ginge will be 'back on deck' tomorrow. Trust me when I say both Ginge and Jo-Jo are TOUGH. Personal anecdote here, The first time I ever met them and worked alongside them, we were digging post-holes using a crow-bar, shovels and picks in a paddock used to keep the rams away from the ewes. The meanest, nastiest of the rams decided to charge at Ginge, we shouted a warning to her but instead she stood firm, held her ground and landed a full on, closed fist punch to the head of the ram, knocking it off its feet and senseless to the ground. She then shrugged her shoulders, picked up the stunned ram and tossed into the back of the utility saying, " I hope you wake up with the biggest headache possible you mean bastard," then picked up a shovel and kept on working. I've often seen the toughest of the tough Jackaroos turn and run like the wind when a ram charges because those buggers can really do some damage when they ram a person.

I've met them both, know them quite well, worked alongside them, they are a pair of hard workers, great people, have the typical Aussie outback sense of humour, can be 100% 'feminine' off the job but on the job are easily equal to any bloke and often even better imo.

Hope the school goes under.
Triphid replies on Dec 14, 2020:
Well according to statistics it student intake and student numbers at Sacred Heart Infants, Primary and Secondary School since 2010-2011 have been steady but not as good as they were in the 60's through to the 90's. In the 60's they usually had approx. an annual intake of 20-30 new students into the Infants Department and an average of 250-300 students in total at the school. Their 2019 intake was a mere 9 new students to the Infants Dept, and the sum total for the whole school had dropped to 247 students overall. So given an average of 2 school aged children per family that have/are withdrawing their children from the school next year are numbering at 17 and increasing that means a probable loss of 34 students from ALL Departments atm and even more if the increase of families withdrawing their children keeps on happening. Plus given that parents ARE required to pay between $1,500 and $2,000 per Semester per child plus ANY and ALL extra fees, expenses as well, I'm kind of thinking that maybe Catholic parents are beginning to feel the financial pinch as well as the School's low Education Ratings, etc, etc.

@skado Well, a) 99.999% of clients I work with are those in need, often desperate need, of Counselling Assistance for REAL trauma such as Child Abuse ( usually either Sexual, Physical or Mental), Bullying, Family Violence/s cases, Gender disparities ( such as WAS being endured by my most recent NEW Client) and almost countless other traumas as well, b) the other 0.001% of clients are mostly children/youths who feel they are teetering on or at the brink of committing Suicide, c) as I stated prior to this comment, here in Australia we ARE NOT under the seemingly, American 'fashionable' ideology of 'Getting Psychological/Psychiatric Counselling/Therapy' for such, imo, meaningless and TRIVIAL things as, for example, " Mummy and Daddy wouldn't let me wear the clothes I wanted to wear when I was just 13 years old so now I have a problem, etc, etc,." Hence, like most Psychologists/Counsellors who actually have ETHICS rather than,, imo, "just being in it for the money," I rarely, and if ever, see or work with these NON-Crisis cases/clients.
