I think a bigger fear that keeps people in religion is the loss of family and friends. I think acceptance and belonging is such a fundamental and basic need for most people that they stay in religion even if they don't necessarily believe, although they won't admit it.
Triphid replies on Aug 10, 2020:
Yes, and as the saying goes, "You can pick your friends but you cannot pick your family," and, as I have found over the years, imo, it is far, far better to have a few good and trusted friends whomyou can call 'family' than it is to have a family related by blood that seeks to bring down when they percieve you as being the 'Black Sheep,' etc, etc. I turned my back on my blood related family, with a few exceptions I might add, many years ago, found good, true and trusted friends whom I now call my family and in doing so have found what real families should be like.

@LovinLarge To borrow/use a Legal Terminology here, An case that relies sole upon unproven, tried and tested evidence is merely, nothing more than a False claim at best." E.g. one single compendium of stories, i.e. the bible, CLAIMS itself to be the Truth yet it also contradicts itself time and time again. No-one, absolutely no-one can prove a Negative just as no-one can prove a false claim, but a claim made with tried, tested Empirical evidence can be proven. And yet, the Sciences have dozens, if not thousands, of books each containing tried and tested proven evidences with very few, if any, contradictions within them. It IS easier to follow along with mere assumptions and suppositions IF one is so afraid of the truth hence we have religions where those who fear the truth can hide in relative false safety.

I'm not sure where you got the "most modern scholars" bit from BUT I know quite a number of modern scholars that are deep in to Historically based facts, etc, and NONE have ever found tangible, empirical proof/evidence that the Jesus as depicted in the bible ever existed except as a creation to enhance the original Messianic Mythology that then became Christianity post the Council of Nicaea, 325 C.E. (A.D.). On experiences I'd state that, emphatically and as a Doctor of Theology and Comparative Modern Religions, that these 'scholars' of which you speak ARE, beyond the shadow of a doubt, Biblical Scholars with an inherent bent to ensure at ALL costs that their belief system is the Truth no matter what.

Even those Forensic suits they wear at Crime Scenes are often enough to cause you to sweat like a pig at a Slaughter House. Bio-suits are cumbersome, heavy and, more often than not, require either a back-pack style of Breathing Apparatus or a hose system attached to an external, air supply. Plus with a population of around 24 million in Australia WHERE are we going to get enough Bio-suits, which btw are single use only EXCEPT for those designed for and used in labs, etc, plus none are designed for Infants, Children and the like. Those patrolling the Borders, etc, etc, ARE placing themselves on the line, literally, EVERY time they do so since there is NO immunisation as yet available FOR the sake of us and others in case you were unaware. @FrayedBear NO, the Federal Government screamed about getting businesses, etc, back up and running, they also screamed about getting the Borders open again. Each State has control of ITS own Borders and when Covid-19 flared up again so rapidly in Vict. N.S.W. and S.A. closed their sides of the Borders with Victoria BUT many your fellow Victorians ignored that and kept on crossing them anyway, some even used back-tracks and almost all were caught in doing so. State Borders being closed during this pandemic are an inconvenience Yes, but they ARE a very necessary inconvenience for the Health and Safety of ALL Australians. The " failure" belongs squarely, imo, upon those Victorians who chose to Jump the Gun in the first place and those who chose to ignore the Closed Borders, NOT on the Peoples of N.S.W. and S.A.

Ergo, the ONLY way your ' elderly new acquaintance' would be granted a Writ of Habeas Corpus IF, a) He were already deceased, which would an UTTER impossibility since the Dead can NOT sue for a Writ of ANY kind, and, b) His death was considered as being a case of Murder, hence the Counsel for the Defendant would have had to sue for a Writ of Habeas Corpus on behalf of his Accused Client.

@FrayedBear Wow, so I'm " eager to returnto the pre-Constitution days, etc, etc," am I ? And HOW exactly do you know this for such a FACT that you state on Public Media such as this FB? Are you attempting to tell everyone that you know me better than I know myself? FB you know ONLY as much about me and who I am from what I care to allow others to know, ERGO your assertions such just mentioned COULD easily be taken as being DIRECT attempts at Disdparagement and Libel. And FYI, there were State Borders/Boundaries in Australia pre- the Federation of Australian States in 1901, for example, New South Wales once encompassed the Eastern Coast of Australia from the Murray River to the tip of Cape York, Queensland UNTIL the State, now known as Queensland was formed and became a State, South Australia also once encompassed what is now S.A. and the Northern Territory plus a small part of W.A. also. To correct your false assertions, what I would like to see IS Australia UNIFIED as ONE country with ONE set of Laws to govern ALL Peoples in ALL States, Road Rules, etc, being one thing in particular. This Political quibbling between Federal and State Governments over whose job it is for this, that or the other is somewhat like salt-damp to the stone foundations of buildings, imo, it IS eating them away slowly and surely and the most recent and Prime Example of this was the 'Black Summer' Bushfires debacle where Victorian Fire Services could NOT contact N.S.W. Fire Services by direct Radio contact because they each were using a different Radio Communication system and frequencies. Thee is a very poignant old saying you may wish to remember FB, " Always LOOK before you Leap," that also applies to Leapng to Conclusions as well.

Yeah exactly, N.S.W. had Covid under control fairly much UNTIL a few Victorians decided to cross the borders and stir it all up again AFTER they already had KNOWN Hot-Spot flaring up. But I'll lay odds on bets that FB will dispute that to the hilt. When Governments say that the Borders are Shut then they MEAN that they are SHUT for a reason, not a mere whim. Yet the Crossroads Hotel Outbreak occurred and HAS been tracked back to a Victorian source and that spread out through N.S.W. like a bloody bush-fire. So Yes, imo, lay the blame squarely where it belongs, i.e. on the selfishness of those who just seem to feel that THEIR wants, needs and desires matter more than the rest of the people and the country.

Now, as to your suggestion that "truth- can at times be a bitter-morsel to digest-" then some, like yourself for instance, may find that "truth is a hard Pill to swallow" but to those who cherish Truth, Fsct, Logic, Reasoning, etc, etc, etc, it IS both never a problem to swallow and nor it is a great burden to carry around. And yet, in times past women were almost deified, revered, respected and given great honour, .e.g in the Old Kingdom times of Ancient Egypt, the hieroglyphic symbol for woman was depicted as a Water Jug since the woman was deemed as being, like water, both the Giver of Life and the Sustainer of Life, whereas the hieroglyph for man was merely depicted as being a Plow, i.e.a very simple thing used to make furrows ready for the seeds to be sown and togerminate into plants for harvesting. Then along came the European-Northern Meditterranean Influences and the roles were completely reversed and after that came the 3 basic Judaeo- Abrahimic Religions and women were demoted even further down the scale.

@OldMetalHead My 7 Element 'way out' Antenna was great on the 27Mhz C.B. Band as well, got contacts from places that the local 'Skip Chasers' did not believe until I showed them the QSL Cards that I'd received. One of my best was from a team at Camp #2 on the side of Mount Everest but only got that one after Ihad made a few calculations and adjustments. My calculations turned out that by anglking the Driven End of the Antenna upwards ( off the horizontal by between 12.5 and 15 degrees I could actually maximse the 'Skip" effect and gain great distances between the Antenna and the target region plus not lose as much of my signal strength as well. Besides using 2 electric Rotators in tandem to turn such a large, all Aluminium Antenna, I added to the Antenna-Mast junction point a smaller electric motor taken from a Control Box of a Diese-Electric Locomotive, that was being stripped down for scrap, that enabled me to go from true horizontal to the 12.5-15 degree tilt as needed without the need to wind down the mast to change the angle. Considering that my mast was 48.5 feet tall when fully extended, winding it up and down in all kinds of weather was definitely not an 'enjoyable' task at the best of times. And No, I did not use my "Ham Radio' Transceiver on the 27Mhz C.B. Radio Bands, just a basic Uniden Base Station, an AM/SSB Washington Base Station with an output of just 12.5 watts.

My measured Signal Output from my Transceiver was 1.250 Kilowatts, then final signal Output from the antenna was registered as being a nice 12.235 Kilowatts with a beam width, measured out by a fellow Ham Radio Operator using his mobile unit in Natal, South Africa, of 17.6 kilometres. @ALeigh I'm a firm believer that dogs can actually sense when the people they love are either feeling down or are ailing from something. When Lorrae's cancer returned, Charlie was the first, as far I'm concerned, to notice something was not quite right and he'd be by her side and seem to keep a constant check on her then as it became nore obvious that it had returned the ONLY times he would leave her side was to go out to do 'his necessaries' and then straight back to keep watch. For weeks after her death he would wander around the house, ears flat down, head hanging down and actually whimpering and barely eating I honestly think that, like me, he was in mourning.

When we rescued Charlie he was so thin that you didn't need an x-ray to check his bone structure, just hold him up to a strong light almost, he weighed in at just under 2 kilos, had fleas, ticks and intestinal worms by the ton, it took him about 3 days to realise that he was no longer restricted to a length of chain about a metre long and that his food included more than just the stale bread soaked in water that was given to him about twice per week IF he was lucky by his previous owners. Within 4-6 weeks he had gained weight, the fleas, etc, were gone completely, he had discovered that chewing on bones was enjoyable, had house-trained himself and had made a corner of the backyard his 'toilet place,' and had learned that hoses, brooms and the like were NOT weapons to be used against him but were completely harmless things.

@MsAl I too am only too well aware of the Elderly/Nursing Home situation, since I am NOW classed as being an Aged Pensioner. I once worked as a Nurse in what were then called " Geriatric Wards" in Hospitals here in Ausstralia, as well as a nurse in the fields of nursing also. I am appalled and sickened to my stomach every time I hear of the utter mis-treatment and Abuse of Patients that goes on in Nursing Homes and it often tends to make think that these Nurses, in some cases, who take up Caring for the Elderly do so, not because they care about their patients BUT because ALL they seem to be interested in is the Pay-Cheque. The Elderly are just an example of what the Young are going to become one day, so, imo, they too must learn to respect the Elderly SHOULD they too want to be respected themselves when they are old. As to ' a shrinking population being bad' I ask where are we going to find the needs, etc, etc, for those being born these days, where are they going to find work to earn the money for themselves, etc, etc, and for how long can this planet keep supporting such a somewhat rapidly expanding human population?

@MsAl Well with a 'shrinking population' comes some good advantages, i.e, 1) Employments will rise because fewer people will mean more availability of jobs, sad I know, but none-the less true. 2) We can no longer simply go along our own merry way BECAUSE we have just realized that we ARE ALL in the same boat, 3) and last but by no means least of all, We must redress and repair the damages WE have caused to the Climate and Environment of this, our ONLY home. Sadly I often see we Humans as being little more than a virus in that we come along, infest the hosts( the land, etc, etc,), destroy that host/s then merely 'up stakes' and move on to infest other hosts and so on and so forth. WE MUSt change or face the alternative, EXTINCTION.

@barjoe I tend to think that should PotUS 45 lose the election, which I sincerely hope he does because we ARE looking down the barrel of either a Cold War with China or a Bloody All Out War with them because of him, he will, A) scream, Squeal, Rant and Rave like a stuck pig that election was 'rigged' against him, B) he will NOT leave office quietly, C) he WILL the maximum disruption, etc, etc, he possibly can BEFORE he goes, and last but by no means least, D) we will never hear the last of him in either his or our life times, simply because, imo, his Arrogant, Self'Centred, Egotistical, Narcissistic nature will drive him on and on until he dies.

@barjoe Thank you now I won't be having my mind running wild trying to remember where or who it came from, hopefully.

@barjoe Not 100% certain where exactly that came from. I seem to remember somehow that I heard it many, many moons ago in English Literature Classes way back in my High School days rather than something from my years of studying for my ThD. I suppose, as seems the usual manner, it will suddenly come to me one night whilst I'm trying to go to sleep but my brain wants, as it always seems, to keep on working.
My last relationship ended two months ago.
Triphid comments on Jul 26, 2020:
Sounding a wee bit on the selfish side there imo. Unless you have personally felt the loss of someone very close to you, sadly, you will NEVER understand truly what it does to you. Almost everyone who lost someone close to them requires as much time as they need to learn to come to grips with that...

@educatedredneck In my most honest opinion and comprehension of your original posting your only mentions re- your ex were how she has called everything off due to a familial crisis, i.e. the death of a nephew from cancer, and how the death, etc, is impacting upon YOUR wants, needs and desires ONLY. As a semi-retired Psychologist and Crisis Counselor I would offer up this opinion that, 1) You appear to show by your posting/comments, etc, that you lack, to some greater extent, a sense of Compassion, Empathy, Sympathy and over-all Understanding of the very close and personal trauma, etc, that she and her immediate family are enduring in such a very traumatic time as this, 2) your 'ego' has been injured/damaged in your opinion by your ex calling a cessation, temporary or permanent, to the relationship, WHICH is 110% PURELY understandable considering the situation that has arisen btw, 3) that, imo, you have little or no comprehension/understanding of the familial links between her and her family, i.e. Blood is Truly thicker than water and that the 'water'as mentioned is merely the Physical and Emotional 'Link' between the two of you, a somewhat fragile link between most humans at the very best of times btw, 4) You seem to lack any understanding of what Grieving Processes, etc, she and her family are going through and need to come to grips with, 5) Instead of trying to understand the above Grieving Processes, you are concentrating soley upon your personal and emotional needs, etc, etc, ERGO, imo, you ARE being a 100% Selfish Jerk even if you do not actually realise it, and, 6) last but by no means least, IF you are, as I suspect, merely calling/messaging her to enquire ONLY When and If she might consider resuming your relationship together again then, imo, you ARE failing miserably. Instead, as any other decent loving and caring person would in case/position like this, you should be offering her ALL your emotional support, understanding, compassion, empathy, sympathies, etc, etc, as well just telling her that you are more than willing to wait for as long as it may take for her and her family to come to terms with their loss. In case you are unware, there is NO Manual/Book of Guidelines for those enduring Grief, etc, etc, absolutely EVERYONE deals with and handles Grief in their own particular way/manner and it IS up to everyone else around them and concerned with them to allow them to do so in their own individual manner and their time as they feel fit. Ergo, and on a personal note and opinion only here, I would have to humbly say that your Screenname is, imo, one huge Oxymoron to say the least given what I have comprehended thus far.

@barjoe As the saying goes, " To Err is to be Human, to Forgive is to be Divine," since I AM only but a mere human also shall I forgive you but do not think that I am divine by doing so please.
