Brewing beer may be an older craft than we realized in some places | Science News

Beer was a part of the staple diet in Ancient Egypt since at least the time of the earliest Kings. I've actually had a taste of that beer made using the ancient Egyptian recipes, it is a taste that one needs to get used to, but, none-the-less, it is quite refreshing and nutritious as well.

@TheMiddleWay May one ask if YOU have ever been involved in picking up the bits and pieces of dead bodies as I have done so very often sadly? A Preacher during and after times like that, ESPECIALLY when one is removing the shattered remain of a 10 year old child from under a 130 ton Diesel-Electric Locomotive AFTER his Aunt has played 'chicken' with a 2,500 ton train doing 90 kilometres per hour, is not much better than absolutely useless. Far better to sit down, de-brief and talk to someone, anyone who does NOT want to offer up prayers and sympathy BUT one who will listen, understand and guide you through the absolute horrors of having to crawl under the Locomotive and gather up bits like the head, arms, legs, torso and as often as not, even the abdominal contents, etc. So, please tell me IF you have experienced anything like that and how many times you have done it. My sad tally in 12 years was 3 children UNDER the age 13 years, 6 Teenagers who tried JUMPING over a speeding frieght train on Motocross bikes only to end up splattered worse than bugs hitting a windscreen on a car on the sides and in between shipping containers, 2 Insurance Salepersons who were playing 'Beat the train,' 1 fellow worker crushed between the couplings of 2 freight wagons, 1 fellow worker whose legs were almost completely amputated when the wheels went over them whilec he was repairing the wagon and the Shunting Crew moved it and a local man who got drunk, accepted a dare to sleep on the tracks and lost both legs, 1 arm at the wrist and the other between the elbow and the shoulder and lastly a woman approx. 7 months pregnant who decided to commit suicide by stepping in front of a passenger train travelling between 2 Stations.

Triphid replies on May 7, 2020:
@AnonySchmoose Kind of hard to describe but I will try. Firstly, it is nowhere near like our modern beer, it is more of a colour similar to milk, not clear, not dark either, more a watered down milky colour, the taste is somewhat like modern beer but heavier, more a malted/fermented flavour that still holds the slight taste/flavour of the grain used in the making of it. No effervescence or 'head' as we see on modern beers/ales, etc, none of that 'bloated' sensation you get after drinking modern beers either, but you do get the feeling of having a fullish, satisfied stomach after drinking it, though I will admit that we actualy drank approx. 8 litres between the 4 of us when we were 'tasting it.' According to the Archaeology Technicians who made it the recipe calls for the addition of bread as well as grain and fresh water to the mix and must be left to ferment in sealed clay pots, big ones, for at least 2-3 weeks. If I had the gear, grain, etc, I would try making it myself since it needs no yeast added nor any extra heating, etc, to kick start the frementation, just the clay pots and the warmth from the surrounding atmosphere.

But merely being able to sit and talk with someone who is not going to offer prayer, tea and sympathy but, instead, says to you that "you did everything humanly possible to give a bit of dignity to the person who has died" does make you feel a bit better.

Safety FIRST and Foremost my friend, safety first and foremost not only for yourself but EVERYONE else as well, time to stop being one-minded in my opinion since we are all in the same boat these days. Though I still object to the idea of having a mobile phone just so the Government can ' keep track of me and my movements' since my 'movements are as the same as they have been for the last 19+ years anyway.

One of the more' memorable' deliveries I helped with was a woman ( of course) who sttod at about 5' 4", weighed in at approx. 90 pounds dripping wet and we were setting up ready for the next stage of the birth process, she sneezed, farted and this 13 pound, 11 ounce 'hulk' of a baby boy just shot out and landed on the bed. About 10-12 minutes later Mum was sitting up, holding the baby and asking to be allowed to have a shower, then a cup of coffee and 2 Hamburgers with the lot.

Donating blood, bone marrow, etc, etc, is by the sole hoice of the Donor and the Donor alone just as is, in my opinion, it is the SOLE choice of the woman when she is pregnant as whether or not she either carries the embryo to full term or aborts it. The body belongs solely to the person inhabiting it and NO-ONE else, ergo, it IS the same as your car, your house, etc, etc, ONLY you and your partner, IF you have one that is, can decide what is permitted in your house/car, etc, etc, and so should it be for the pregnant woman with the exception that it IS her body, her property and HER choice alone.

Though having been a Mid-wife and helping bring 163 babies into the world, seeing what women go through during Natural Birth and afterwards, especially if they need an epeasitomyin particular, I'd say my experience was a whole less to bear than theirs.

@Surfpirate Geez, then most ladies have never met my old school friend Dougie Haynes, aka Donk. At the age of 13 he COULD NOT wear shorts at all and when, once berated by a P.E. Teacher for not wearing shorts, he simply dropped 'his dacks' ( pants), stood there for ALL to see and said, " This IS why." The Teacher, the Girls lined up about 10 feet away, their female Teacher and us bloody nearly fainted to see what could only be described as something similar to a baby elephant's trunk holding an apple. No kidding, Dougie was about 4' 10" tall, as skinny as a rake handle and his 'sausage' was hanging down almost to his kness, hence his nicknames immediately became 'Donk,' 'Fire-hose,' 'Tripod' and Middle Stump amongst a few others. Last I heard Dougie is still happily married, a father of 3 daughters and 2 sons and still only ever wears long trousers.

Not quite as much a joke as you might think though. Back in1980 I had a job with a local Firm driving trucks loaded with Nitro-Glycerine from Broken Hill to the Western Mining Lease up near Tibooburra, $300 per trip, with $300 extra as 'Danger Money, 3 trips per week all at night. The trucks had refrigerated crates fitted and we were all told, " If the refrigeration unit stops working you've got about 5 minutes MAXIMUM to get clear before the shit hits the fan." We used to travel in convoys of 3 trucks separated at 8 minute intervals, one trip, about 40kms from Broken Hill, and keeping one ear focused on the hum of the refrigeration unit, I heard it stop, aimed the truck off to the side of the dirt road, grabbed my smokes and my Thermos Flask, jumped out and ran like hels for the closest dry creek bed, ducked for cover just as the shit hit the fan. Needless to say the truck disappeared in a cloud of dust, smoke and flames, I got pelted with bits of truck, rock and dirt as 24 vials of Nitro went up The next day, when me and the two other trucks got back to the Depot, the Boss asked me , " Where the f**k is the truck?" My reply was, " The truck is everywhere, all over the bloody paddock, but the good news is that the spare wheel and the steering wheel are still in one piece, thanks for asking, now pay me my $300 for the trip and my $300 in 'danger money' because I've just quit." The last time I went past the spot, the Grazier had made use of the bloody huge where the truck went up and turned it into Dam to hold water for his sheep and had placed the engine block up on a mound of rocks as well, I suppose a kind of monument to the truck maybe.

@WilliamFleming Ergo, one can easily say that your morning regimen is quite religiously adhere to then, since, as you have stated, that IS always your regimen and you stick to it as you seem to do with everything else in your day. Now, perhaps and that is ONE Huge, almost Cosmos sized PERHAPS imho, you may chance upon seeing that the terminology of one being 'religious' in nature/manner about a regimen is NOT used in sole reference to a System of Religious belief but to the adherence to a set routine as well.

@TheMiddleWay The Christian 'sacking' of the Great Library of Alexandria occurred in the period A.D. NOT in the period B.C.E. There were NO 'books' stored/held in the library at that time since 'books' were totally unknown then , they were ALL scrolls, either papyrus scrolls or vellum scrolls as were the norms of that era. The Serapeum (Library) was estimated to have housed approx. 11,000 scrolls written by some of the Greatest minds of the times both prior to the A.D. era and before the Christians destroyed it. THAT, Mr. Middleway, IS historical FACT and not the propanga as per issued by the Christian Sects.

@FrayedBear The chemical known as Radon was banned from use in Radox brand Bath Salts due its cytotoxic nature. Yes spray do volitize but nowhere near as you and your 'sources' are claiming. Monsantos' main problem has been with the use of a chemical called Glyphosate, a weed killer which IF it contacts bare skin, eyes, etc, MAY be harnful, that is why Crop Dusters dusting paddocks for weeds DEMAND that ALL workers MUST be a minimum of 600 metres CLEAR of ANY and ALL fields/paddocks being sprayed. Run off into nearby or adjacent water supplies like creeks/ rivers, etc, occurs when excessive usage of chemical based fertilizers happens because the Farmers always tend to 'over-use' their stocks of chemical, man-made fertilizers WHICh they spread by using Spreader attachments towed behind Tractors and usually do it when rain is predicted thus NOT giving enough time for the fertilizer to absorbed into the soil. Hey, you are in hospital, take the time to STOP reading the " Greenie' propanga, which is ALWAYS highly embellished and overstated, and read upon the facts instead, please.

@Varn YESSS, my knowledge of Geogrphy is quite good and I know that there is a North and South in the American Continent but, perhaps, I should, for your benefit use the terminology of U.S. Americanism. And yes, many of us Aussies can trace our heritage back to the Convicts of the Penal Colonies, the same convicts who were shipped here by the British Nobility(???) because they stole a loaf of bread, etc, to feed their starving families, etc. They were often treated worse than slaves, worked their arses off under the British wielded lash and built this country with their own, sweat, blood and often bones up to what was until the likes of the L.N.P governemts snatched power, with the covert help of the U.S. and Britain, after Gough Whitlam. Oh, and btw, it was NOT the indigenous Nations of the U.S. who drove such species as the Bison, Wolf, Bear, Coyote, Beaver, etc, etc, to very verge of Extinct, it WAS the European Settlers who did that FYI. The Indigenous peoples hunted only for food and used every bit of their prey whereas your vaunted European Ancestors/Settlers went mainly after pelts and only the tenderest pieces of meat leaving the rest to rot in the sun. How many Indigenous Tribes/Clans did your vaunted Settlers kill off completely or drive from their Traditional Lands and stick on Reservations like they did to my Cherokee Ancestors and Peoples? How many MILLION Bison did your vaunted European Settlers kill just for fun of it by shooting from the carriage windows on trains or were shot in the MASS hunts like te ones your HERO, Buffalo Bill was involved in? Yes, Australia and Australians have to answer for the things they did to our Indigenous peoples BUT, imo, the Non-Indigenous peoples of the U.S. have far, far more to answer for including the all-out attempts at Genocide of the Indigenous Natives of the U.S. and that, Sir, is just for starters. As is so often said, " The U.S. comes along speaking loudly of Democracy but leaves behind it only a land that is little more than a desert and call it peace."

@FrayedBear Who ever told you that spraying by Farmers can travel up to 150klms is most definitely leading you up the garden path. Even the droplets from Aerial Spraying aircraft are released at very low altitudes from around 60 metres to 120 metres to gain the maximum effect of the spray on the crop below. Good, well trained Crop Duster Pilots are NOT the drunken Cowboy types as picture in the Indepence Day movie, that is Holly wood myth and over dramatisation. Yes, human mouths do act as sprayers BUT they rely solely upon the musculature of the diaphragm, the Intercostal muscles and those of the trachea and the bronchi which do NOT have the ability or strength to propel dropelets more than a maximum of 1.5 to 2.5 metres even when a person sneezes or coughs. I'll wager with you that IF you can find any person who can actually spit from an erect, standing, stationary position WITHOUT the advantage of a tailing breeze/wind any further than 5 feet in a horizontal line BEFORE the sputum drops to the ground then I will send you $20 BUT you must have and show TOTALLY independent, irrefutable motion film evidence to support your erroneous claim. @WilliamFleming AGAIN with the 'circular reasoning.' Do you ever tire of having your mind and thoughts merely traveling around in circles? In your comment/question re-Einstein and his 'being religious about the "subtle, intangible, inexplicable force" you read, imo, the word RELIGION and take its meaning literally, is that not so? I tske it as meaning ' seeking that very force with diligence in a very religious manner, in other words diligently and with a very strict system of controls, recording of results both for and against, testing and retesting, that is what Scientists do and it clasified as a Regimen towhich they adhere in a very religious ( STRICT) manner. Almost everyone has a Regimen to which they adhere in their daily lives, no less 'religiously' than anyone else, I for one, have such a regimen in that I, as a part of my Oath to my teenaged daughter, that I would shave my head EVERY day, without fail before sunset, firstly due to the fact that the Chemotherapy she had to undertake caused her to lose her and hence mine would be shaved off in support AND that I gave my Oath to her on her deathbed that " since her hair had NOT regrown then neither would mine be permitted to do so and remain shaved every day that I am able to honour both her memory and to homour both ALL other children who have died from cancers, etc, and those in the future as well. By adhering 'religiously' to a Regimen it does NOT mean anything akin to praying to it, etc, etc, it simply means that one abides by it in a strict and regular manner, ergo your 'concept'of Einstein being 'religious' in his scientific researches is quite unfounded.

@TheMiddleWay To your 'assertion' and that of Rational (???) Wikipaedia I say Crap, Crap, Crap. The War between Christianity and other beliefs and science has been going since before the Early Christian Sect destroyed over 60% of the Great Library of Alexandria in Egypt, murdered possibly hundreds of Non-Christians including numerous Scholars and ALL in the name of their God and Jesus. That , SIR, is a well known and documented FACT. For centuries Christians have relished in screaming words like ' persecution,' 'discrimination, ' etc, etc, when in truth they have been perpetrators thenselves all along But HEY, if they can't scream 'persecution,' etc, then how can they expected to 'share' in the presecutions and sufferings of their great, mythological Idol, Jesus? If they did not take part in the wholsale massacresw of Jews and Muslims during the Crusades then how on earth would the Roman Catholic Church and Empire have been able to accumulate so much land from the Estates of the Dead Warriors who fought and died during those very Crusades. The very same Warriors who were given ( sold actually) Papal 'Free Passes to Heaven and total Absolution for their sins and crimes both prior to the Crusades and DURING the Crusades? How would Catholicism have gained the foothold it has in countries like Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, etc, etc, WITHOUT declaring a 'Holy War' on those native inhabitants to whom they referred to as being Pagans/Heathens, etc, etc, and either enslaving them or killing them by the hundreds and thousands? Christianity and Christians particularly have for centuries been extremely vocal in shouting down science and sciences BUT they have never short on accepting and embracing the advances and advantages that these very 'enemies' they oppose so strongly and vehemently have brought foward for them to embrace with open arms, have they? A very PRIME example of Christianity SCREAMING about 'persecution is the ages ld myth of Christians being either put to death or slaughtered by the Romans in the Arenas such as the Flavian Arena ( Colusseum), a total myth btw. The truth being, and histirically recorded btw, is that the victims in places such as the Flavian Arena were mainly either Slaves, Thieves, Murderers, etc, and on very RARE occassions the odd Gladiator or two. Yet another created myth perpetrated by Christians and Hollywood Movie Producers alike just as is the myth of Hebrews being enslaves in Ancient Egypt as per the book of Exodus in the bible, the Plagues of Egypt, the part of the Red Sea, etc, etc. Ergo, IF youare trying to play the part of the 'Devil's Advocate' then, imo, you are falling somewhatv short of the mark, but if you are being deliberately obtuse then, imo, you are succeeding well above your own expectations.

@powder I agree to a point but testing is far more important than merely tracking the day to day movements of everyone in this vast country. In my opinion, IF they had 'blanket tested' everyone from the start then they'd already have a compiled list of where everyone was, went and with whom. A very similar system has been in place for decades in regards to other communicable diseases such as Sexually Transmitted Infections and given that in very remote regions like I live in where mobile phone signals drop out after one is further than 15 kilometres from town then it is bloody well near useless. Plus, imo, what good does it do for anyone really, to keep track of them, wait until they MAY have come in contact with someone with Covid-19 then wait while Amazon's Computer Systems sort through every strand of tracking information and THEN notify them, perhaps, hours or even days later because the Amazon Computer Systems have gone into overload with new data coming in non-stop? Would it NOT have been more advisable and prudent to have tested EVERY Australian within the first weeks or months and then re-test again on a weekly or fortnightly basis? They can mail out Bowel Cancer Testing kits every year so WHY not mail out Covid Testing kits to every household, etc, etc.?

@WilliamFleming I TRUST in science to tell the truth whether or NOT it is right or wrong on any subject. I do NOT have any kind of "Faith " as per the meaning you appear to be using. I know that, for example, the ground beneath my feet is solid and has been around for well over millions of years, the Earth orbits the Sun over a period of 365.25 each year approximately and that the Earth, the Sun and the other planets, etc, in this Solar System came into being, not by the magical 'waving' of some mystical God, by the accretion effects of particles in a massive cloud od dust and gases over a very long time. I know that the Sun does NOT rise above the Easter Horizon but that the Earth turns from West to East instead thus GIVING, to the unenlightened mind, the impression that the Sun rotates around the Earth. Science has never gone about trying to disprove religion nor replace it, it just goes about thinking, theorizing, researching, finding facts and evidences then proving or disproving those very thoughts and theories. Religion has for countless generations cried "woo-woo" at the things science has proven, for example, Evolution, but has always resisted vehemently ALL calls to show any definable, tangible, irrefutable, peer tested and PROVEN evidences that IT is 100% correct, WHY is that I ask you?

@TheMiddleWay Religions, Christianity in particular, see anything that does not encompass it or its beliefs as either Persecuting it or being at 'War' with it. After all, is not the hymn " Onward Christian Soldiers" one of their 'mainstay' hymns? Religions the world over have at war with each since time immemorial BUT they cannot and will not admit to that, they simply pass the blame on to the nearest available and most innocent scapegoats that they can find. E.G. The Christians declared war on the Muslims which started the First and all other Crusades, Catholics declared war on the Lutherans, Protestants, etc, and even their own, the Cathars, Muslims have declared war on the various sects, etc, of Islam YET it is ALWAYS blamed upon the convenient Scape-goats such as Atheists, etc, that they are the War-mongers and NOT the Churches, etc. Sadly, in my honest opinion, 'tunnel vision' is a very limiting thing but a boon to those who choose to living with it.

Here in Australia we had a Full-on, Up-Front Atheist Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, but the Faithfools in her party and the LNP Coallition consorted quickly and got rid of her, that is one of methods REligion and the Religious employ these days to try to maintain their grip, as shakey as it is getting, on society. @AmyTheBruce I've been trying to 'write' such a 'script' to use on the coming Sunday Evening when I intend to to do the first ' God Speaks' act. Absolutely love your 'script,' though I will replace the 'Evangeloon' with something more akin to a kindly, divine addressing like, " My true and beloved Child......etc, etc." Hopefully that will really grab his attention. Oh, I just found amongst my old Chemistry set a substance that when sprayed on a surface gives it a 'glow' like a fire/flame and is almost completely undetectable by touch or taste, might give it a test run tonight by spraying his Jesus statue just before sunrise as he gets up then to doing his praying bit around then.
Why Religion Is Not Going Away and Science Will Not Destroy It

But Sir, any religious belief system/dogma/tenet, et, etc, both requires and demands Faith without Questioning whereas Science, on the other hand, requires Questioning, Research, Evidence, Examination, Re-examination, Discussion, re-discussion and Questioning over and over until it is proven or disproven, is that not so? To 'borrow' your 'cards analogy, even ghe most amateur of Poker players know that youcan ONLY bluff your way through a hand for just so long UNTIL someone eventually calls you out and you either have to show your hand or fold up, i.e.either you PROVE that you do have the Winning hand or you merely shut up and takeyour losses on the chin like a man.

@AmyTheBruce Oh, his God-bothering 'friends' are very few and far between atm, he was recently banned from the 'back-yard' church group he was with because he demanded a rebate of the $500 he had paid for the Hands-on Healing of his diagnosed 'Moron-A virus' infection. And before anyone asks, YES, I had a somewhat big hand in diagnosing that as well, but that is another story, although a quite humour one as well. I now have countless ideas running through my devious mind as to what to do, even your suggestion of making Jeebus 'cry' which is quite easy to do btw. I think a 'nice' touch after a week or so of the 'Booming voice of God' coming from everywhere in his house would be to send him on a quest to spend 40 days and 40 nights in the Simpson Desert, a harsh, hard and very lonely place here in Australia and to demand that he then go " forth, climb the Red Rock called Uluru and await as I bring him my new set of Commandments." That should keep him busy and out of everyones hair for quite a while UNTIL he gets arrested for Trespassing since Uluru has been closed to visitors climbing it since early this year. Oh, btw, just rang and asked 'Whizz Kid' ( 67 years old but we call him Whizz Kid anyway) IF I could borrow his gear and told him why and the response was a definite YES and he will drop it around to me on the weekend. I too lost a child, my only child, my daughter in Jan. 2001 to Lymphoma and it is something I think that we never truly 'get over.' It lingers on with us for ever but the pain does lessen over a very long period of time though it never really vanishes completely. In my teens I also lost a very very good school friend to suicide, actually found his body where he had hung himself, that tore holes in me as well and that memory still is with me to this day. So I could say that I have a fairly good idea of where you Joshua 7183 are coming from and my feelings, etc, go out to you both.

It occurred to me looking at this that the notion that humans are the only species who can conceive of their death might be wrong. Because we have difficulty or are unable to conceive of our own death we go through elaborate rituals to imagine an after life.
Triphid replies on Apr 29, 2020:
@ToolGuy I'd disagree with you on that point, I remember clearly that when my beloved Blue Heeler was becoming unable to getup easily, walk around, etc, his eyes, to me, revealed that he sensed his end was nearing, the evening before he died quietly in his sleep he kept resting his head on my knees and looking into my eyes as if he was saying goodbye to me over and over again. He was never a dog to just dig ramdom holes around the yard either, but for a few months prior to his dying he kept on digging a hole in the one spot where he always had chosen to 'sun himself' even from when I first got him as pup. But this hole kept getting steadily bigger, longer and deeper over time until he suddenly stopped and began moving his'treasures' ( as I called them) from his normal nightly sleeping place into the hole and leaving them there, perhaps I'm reading something in to it that wasn't there but I do think animals can and do sense when their time is coming. Even Elephants in the wild have been known to leave the herd to go off and die pretty much in the same places as others have UNLESS, of course, they have fallen prey to Poachers and the like. So why wouldn't animals realize that they are about to die just as humans do? After all we ARE just animals are we not?

@AmyTheBruce Ooooh, I do get the sensation that I like how you think something like the way I do. A very good friend of mine has recently made a device that is WI-FI operated, uses a system that focuses the sound waves into a type of beam over a distance of up to 10 metres and causes the sound to seem like it is coming from within a room/building. He also has a device that alters the voice to either sound like Darth Vader, a Dalek, one of the Chipmunks and many more including a very deep, booming, commanding voice ( kind of like an Army Drill Sargeant), I wonder if he's loan his little 'box of tricks' for a few days or a week or so. Boy could I have some great fun with my Jesus Jockey neighbour using that gear, it would sure save me from sneaking into his front yard and moving his garden statue of Jeebus around every few nights.

Triphid replies on Apr 29, 2020:
@Untheist Well, for starters I perceive by a quick look at your Profile Blurb that you identify as being both Agnostic and Religious, how precisely can that be since, logically speaking, Agnostic means " Nothing can be known about God, etc, etc, i.e. it simply implies/means that as an Agnostic you are unsure, uncertain, have doubts about the existence of God and yet you also claim, by way of stating you are Religious, you believe there is a God. Ergo and imo, your comments make as much, logically, to me as if you were trying to tell me that day is night and night is day.
