@273kelvin Geez Mate, you Poms need a bit of advice on cooking decent stews in my opinion. Stews, out here in the Australian Outback SHOULD be so thick and solid that they almost 'stick to your ribs as you eat them, i.e. heaps of meat and vegies, plenty of herbs and spices, gravy thick enough to almost plaster a wall with, soups on the other hand are somewhat liquid enough to need to use a soup spoon to consume them or can be drunk from a cup just like a cup of coffee or tea. out here we rate cooks by the following; 1) Bait-Layer = food produced is barely suitable for baiting foxes or feral cats, 2) Pot Rattler = has a very ROUGH idea of how to cook and the meals produced are just edible enough but not much more than that, and, 3) Fitter and Turner = can take anything, fit it into a pot and make a bloody great, tasty and delicious meal out of it.

Triphid replies on Nov 26, 2019:
@JMLatimer As an a bit of a Historian I'd say there were a few 'spurious ' deities among the Ancient Egyptian Pantheon, like Sekhmet- the Elemental Essence ( Elemental essence being a translation of how the Egyptians actually called their 'gods/goddesses since it was the Catholic Church who deemed that ALL NON Christian Cultures should have Gods, etc, and not just Elemental Essences/Spirits), was the Elemental Female of domestic Strife, Retribution, Romance and Dancing, Set/Sutekh/Seth was the Elemental Male of Men versus Men Warfare, Droughts, Famine, Fire, Plagues, sicknesses and Deserts. As for floods, until modern Egypt built the Aswan Dam, the Nile normally flooded annually, sometimes just a normal, average type of flood, sometimes very little at all, but other times it would completely flood the entire Nile Valley destroying homes, taking lives, killing stock, washing away almost everything. The Ancient Egyptians sorted their year, actually having 365.25 days in every 3 years plus an extra day added to every fourth years much the same as we have today, into 3 separate season, i.e. the Season of the Flood, the Season of Planting (post flood) and Harvesting then the Season of Set/Sutekh, the Hot Season. So, despite what some may think, they did not have it as easy we have been led to believe.

Not really semantics as such in my opinion, since one can have a 'disbelief' that the Earth is flat' but still remain dubious about the idea whereas one can hold that, i.e. have NO belief that the Earth is flat and remain solid on that stance plus show proof positive that the Earth is an oblate sphere. I, for one, hold no doubts whatsoever that No God/Gods or any other Supreme Deities have ever existed nor will ever exist except in the minds and imaginings of man, ergo that is 100% Non-belief.

Do we not, well some of us, actually choose to allow our minds to 'evolve' sufficiently enough so as to reject/discard the religious needs and traps in favour of logical thinking and reasoning? @skado What I said was, " I could give you examples of the 'concepts' of 'God/Gods from the Ancient Egyptians through to the pictorial 'representations' of the Abrahamic based God painted by renown Artists...………" But, I did not say that say that I could/can provide you with my concept of something in which I have no belief at all. Yes, I have seen numerous artistic, hypothetical pictorial 'representations' of this thing people CLAIM to be God, but I have also seen pictures of what Dinosaurs, Wooly Mammoths, Mastodons, etc, etc, looked like and even their fossilized remains as well but they actually existed, hence one can conceive what they were, etc. When I use the 'God' I am NOT using it because I have any concept of it or its existence, I use it for brevity rather than writing such a long 'phrase' something like, "the Omnipotent, Omniscient, Omnipresent, etc, etc, Invisible Imaginary Non-Corporeal Entity that is assumed to have created everything," that I do for both the sake of not typing in some many words and letters and for the sake of those reading my opinions/comments. @skado 100% certain, yes I am and I shall stand by that assertion until the ends of time. I could give you examples of the 'concepts' of God/Gods from the Ancient Egyptians through to the pictorial 'representations' of the Abrahamic based God painted by renowned Artists from Pre-renaissance times right through to Post-Renaissance times if you wish, but they are only mere 'concepts/imaginings' at the very best, are they not? The concept/ideology, call it what you may, that the Universe and everything in it was created by a single, Supreme Entity from absolutely nothing is sublimely ridiculous to say the very least, is it not? My certainty is that the Universe began from a beginning where, possibly, everything was in a highly compressed and unstable state as a Singularity where internal forces eventual become so great that they over-came the bounds of gravitational forces, etc, thus causing the said Singularity to tear itself apart in an ' explosion' ( for want of a better term) the magnitude of which we yet have absolutely no concept or idea of. But we do have evidence, tried, examined, tested and re-tested, etc, to show that something similar or like that actually happened and the forces from it are still active and the Universe is still expanding. Ergo, and conversely, If a Supreme Entity did create the Universe and everything in it, then logically the Universe would be Static, no continuing expansion, etc, simply because it would have been utterly complete from the get go, so to speak. Now are we ready, and not intending to either derogatory, dismissive, etc, etc, btw, to cease 'flogging this very dead horse' and will you admit that your opening statement was incorrect to an extent in that you stated that, " Literalists, both Theists and Atheists, hold God...…"

Korean and Chinese Communism, as a Qualified Psychologist I offer up that those Ideologies merely REPLACED the concepts, etc, of a God/Gods, etc, with a NEWER version, that being in their cases, Lenin, Stalin, the Kim Dynasty and Chairman Mao, which, to a Psychologist like myself is patently obvious when one sits and thinks about it. The Nazi Party of WWII Germany did almost exactly the same thing with Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler did they not? Idi Amin did exactly the same as well by purporting himself to be the One, the Only and the True Leader and Saviour of his people did he not? After all, any religion/religious belief is what the Originator designs it to be for his own ends and means and only those. As for " my Ego," well in actual fact, I don't truly have in the concept to which Ego is often referred these days, in fact I simply see myself as yet another human being who seeks and strive to learn and keep on learning as free as possible from the restraints that society seems to want to place upon us, is that a bad thing? Speaking for myself here, as it is the thing anyone CAN TRULY do, Allamanda, I was NEVER 'a' theist in any concept/meaning of the word you can use, as far back as I can remember ( and that is way to the ages of 2 -3 old) there never was any belief, etc, in a concept of a Supreme, All-Powerful Being that created everything and anything. To me, the word God was just another word that became a part of my vocabulary and was to be found in a dictionary where it is accompanied by other words being used to describe it, words INVENTED by those who also had absolutely NO real concept of what they were TRYING to describe in my opinion. For example, One can use a thousand words to ATTEMPT to describe what the Earth looked like BEFORE it was formed along with the rest of our Solar System but they too are merely postulative hypotheses are they not?

Though some may elect to name inanimate objects, a car for example, it does NOT mean in the least that they are substituting that object for a God or Deity, it IS just a human habit and nothing else, just we name our pets, etc.

@AnneWimsey Well, in the Australian Outback in particular we don't have Tea or Coffee Shops/Cafes around every corner, so when one is camping or traveling through the outback one carries a tin pot called A Billy, usually with the capacity of around 1 litre, a packet of Tea leaves and a packet of matches with which to start a small camp fire. Into the Billy one pours cold water and then places the Billy, with the water in it of course, into the edge of the fire and waits for it boil. Then one adds the tea leaves, lets them steep for a spell, then pours the solution into a cup and VOILA one has Billy Tea to drink, one can add sugar to sweeten it or even milk in the form of condensed milk which comes in a handy tube which means it cannot spoil and curdle like ordinary milk will.

@IamNobody Well, in my opinion, WE ARE ALL responsible for it in one way or another SINCE we inhabit this chunk of Rock we call Planet Earth and IF we ALL don't stand up and be counted then, not only, have doomed our species to oblivion BUT every OTHER species living on Earth as well. This planet HAS endured numerous Climatic Disasters and Changes throughout the billions of years since it first formed, for example, in the Permian Era a MASSIVE eruption in what is now the Siberian Traps Event WIPED out almost 90% of ALL life on the planet, 74,000 years ago, the Super Volcano 'Toba' erupted and almost wiped the Homo Sapien species plus countless Mega-Fauna within thousands of miles of the eruption and blanketing the entire planetary atmosphere in dust, smoke and Sulfur Dioxide gas for well over a year. We humans are pumping literally TONS of both Carbon Dioxide and Sulfur Dioxide gases into the atmosphere every single year at rates that are running almost a very close second place to those emitted by the Siberian Traps Event and the Eruption of Toba. When Sulfur Dioxide reaches the Upper Atmosphere it creates a reflective ' blanket' that does NOT allow sun-light through, it also combine with water molecules and descends back to earth as Sulfuric Acid in the form of Acid Rain, killing everything and poising both the land, seas, waterways, etc. Carbon Dioxide also rises into the Upper Atmosphere WHERE it forms a 'blanket' also that keeps the temperatures higher and the heat IN ( The Greenhouse Effect) this cause the Polar Ice Caps to melt, disrupting the Oceanic Currents, acidifies the oceans, etc, and CHOKES ALL oxygen breathing creatures to DEATH very slowly. The disrupted Oceanic Currents no longer create the winds, rains, etc, as they have always done and until, over perhaps decades/thousands of years, these right themselves, the Carbon Dioxide and Sulfur Dioxide 'blankets again disappear the planet WILL alternate between Ice Age like events and planetary Droughts, etc. It IS our obsession with Burning Fossil based Fuels that have wrought this upon our ONLY home and WE MUST unite NOW and rectify it BEFORE we ARE Extinct and remember that EXTINCTION IS forever.

G'day @drmaf17. Just sent you a message to welcome you to the playground. Tony will look after you here particularly if you send him some potable water. How are the bush fires up your way?

@FrayedBear Don't apologise Mate, I took it as a joke anyway.

Sad that there some out there who are so Bloody-minded and racist. I do truly feel for you on that side of it all, also on the Xmas side of things where every Tom, Dick and Harry as well as the female versions of the same have the idea that everyone MUST wish each other things like 'Merry Xmas' BECAUSE, in their minds, EVERYONE has to believe their archaic, arcane Fairy Tale that a great Saviour was born on that specific day and time of the year. I get some snide enjoyment of responding with either " Happy Saturnalia," or, if I'm in a less than friendly mood, " I hope you've got your umbrella ready on that day because Santa WILL be coming, he ONLY comes once every year and I reckon it WILL get very messy and sticky."
I used to be tolerant of all religions.

*Non-theists hurt people also and so one could reasonably say that we have fewer excuses.*
Triphid replies on Nov 17, 2019:
So, and correct me IF I am wrong, BUT are YOU saying that Non-Theists are responsible for the Crusades, the Genocides committed against the Native Peoples of Africa, Sth. and Central Americas, the Deaths and Destructions wrought by the Hebrews in Exodus, the Flood of Noah, the Destruction of Sodom, etc, etc. NOW, before you attempt to use Circular Reasoning to refute my comment, TRY to remember that the Terminology THEIST does NOT merely refer to those who FOLLOW the Teachings, etc, of the Supreme Deities of the Xrstian, Hebrew or Islamic Religions, IT refers to and includes ALL Gods/Goddesses/Deities past, present and possibly Future as well. Theist - derived from the Greek word "Theos" meaning God. Ergo, Non-Theist (Atheist) - meaning simply a person who denies, does NOT believe/ does NOT wish to believe NOR follow the teachings, etc, of ANY THEOS or belief in said Theos. N.B. Before you bring in anything about the Nazis or Communist Russia, also remember that the upper Echelon of the Nazi Party WERE attempting to create a NEW Aryan Religion and Stalin was a devout Orthodox Russian Christian and was attempting to subvert the powers and holds that the Orthodox Church had over the people and make their belief system much freer and easier on them.

@Rob1948 And WHERE exactly does one find such candidates to begin with? Oh yes, they MAY say they are totally 'untouchable' BEFORE getting elected to convince the people to vote for them but when they get voted in, more often than not, the corruption in politics, which is very rife in this day and age sadly, soon wends its way in. As the saying goes, " Finding an HONEST Politician is like searching for Rocking Horse manure."

@twill Yes, it is mostly BUT in drought times like this it IS far worse than can imagined, though in the Northern Regions such as Queensland, Northern Territory and Northern Western Australia where they get Monsoon type rains it is, for the most part, only seasonally dry. The 'average' rainfall around here is usually approx. 10 inches per year BUT in really good years we can get that in 6 months at times BUT we have not had rainfall of more than 10 millimetres per year since around 2003 to 2005. When I was a child and a teenager we used get Dust Storms so thick that you could NOT see more 2 feet in front of you BUT regenerating the countryside did put a stop to those UNTIL this drought hit.

@Rob1948 BUT, they don't need to hold an Office in Government, they just need to lobby enough politicians, etc, to achieve their aims and THEY have monetary funds available to do so, don't they?

@twill It's an odds on bet you have much more water available where you are than we have had for the last 16+ years though. At LEAST 60+% of Australia has been classified as being Severely Drought Stricken for the last 10+ years, east of where I live, about 100 kilometres away, we ONCE had a series of lakes that, when full to capacity, held MORE water than the whole of Sydney Harbour at High Tide, now, like the river than used to fill them, they too are BONE DRY thanks to the MIS-managements of Governments and Government Authorities. Broken Hill, Western New South Wales, has been on Water Usage Restrictions since 2016, the countryside out here is becoming more like a desert every day, native fauna and flora is dying and disappearing at a very alarming rate and Graziers are IMPORTING hay in huge bundles EVERY week just to feed what stock they can keep in hopes of good decent rains so they can again begin to breed and restock their properties.
Repulsive.

@Rob1948 Sadly I don't think that would work very well since they ARE like flies, i,e, get rid of ONE fly and a dozen or more come along to fill the gap OR as we say in Australia, spray one fly with Bug Spray and a dozen turn up for the funeral. I truly think the Faithfools are somewhat akin to flies in that way, they turn up everywhere and anywhere, you get rid of a few and they just keep coming back in bigger hordes every time.

@sterlingdean REAL Philosophers tend to pose questions that are designed simply to make the reader do the thinking for themselves rather merely handing the answers on a silver platter. Their philosophies ARE based upon reality/realities but are disguised to, as I stated above, to make the reader think for themselves, etc. Not intending here to be derisive, etc, in any way BUT it does seem to me that you may have a very limited understanding and comprehension of what Philosophy real is, ergo, I humbly suggest that you try reading up on it for change, you never know, IT may even enlighten you.
