I nearly shit my pants when she read out to the entire class my 4,891 word essay on, philosophically, WHY I do NOT believe a god has ever existed and then requested that debate my 'No God Philosophies' with the whole class. Within the first 10 or so minutes she had excluded 13 of the class from the debate for "parroting the question/s, etc, of the previous person," then another 3 went of the debate for "putting forth quotations, etc, from the bible and finally the remainder simply stated " How can anyone hope to debate with someone who can list and explain things so purely and succinctly?"

My Great Grandfather, on my 'mother's side of the family, would often relate to me how, as a child back in England, he would go with his father to help him as a Gardener at the nearby Convent. He told me of an occasion where he asked his father " Why there was a huge, deep Lime Pit in the grounds of the Convent" only to be told that the pit was where the 'unwanted babies born to the Nuns were taken ALIVE at night, placed in the pit and then covered in lime so that they'd die and the lime would dissolve the bodies," He initially doubt what his father had told him, UNTIL, one time, a few weeks later, there were some heavy, flooding rains and they were expected to clean up the debris of fallen trees, etc. When they cleared the debris from around the pit area they actually saw that bones, skulls, etc, from what could only be babies/very young children had been washed out of the pit and were scattered around it. That was the time I actually, and for the first time ever, saw my Grandfather sit and cry, not merely weep, but actually have torrents of tears pouring down his face and cheeks so I have no reason even to this day to doubt the truth of his statement.

Department of Education in my capacity of a Child and Youth Crisis Counselor helping kids with their problems both in and out of schools. No problems with the Publics Schools though, I was welcomed with open arms so to speak, BUT one morning I got a message from the local Department Head that my services were urgently required at the local Sacred Heart Primary School ( Catholic School of course). I arrived at the school, ready and willing to do my best for the troubled child ONLY to find that a Priest and 2 Nuns were standing at the gate barring my entry purely on the grounds that I was a known Atheist and was " Not Welcome there no matter the problem a student had NOR what the Department said or decided." Fortunately the child's parents saw reason and allowed me to help their child at their home, the outcome was successful and the child's problems were overcome, the parents also gained from my visits, etc, and subsequently moved their son from the Catholic School to a Public School where their son began to thrive and excel in his education.

@girlwithsmiles It might sound strange, me being a qualified Counseling Child and Youth Psychologist, BUT I got sick of having the Psychologist they sent me to asking stupid questions like, " And how do you feel about that," and other things, so I decided to use what I had learned and helped numerous others with, put it into action myself and set up my own kind of regime. My first 'step' ( for want of a better term) was to make myself take a walk around the city block were my house is every second day in broad daylight and try to speak to at least one person living in that area each time. After doing that for a month I extended the length of the walk to 2 city blocks and so on until I ended up discovering that I was actually enjoying the walks and even stopping and talking to people with ease and even able to go to the Supermarket in the area with relative ease as well. The next step WAS a bit of challenge though, it entailed me catch a bus, traveling on it to the local shopping Plaza ( crowded at the best of times), doing my grocery shopping there then getting a taxi home with all my groceries. The first dozen or so trips took quite an effort but slowly and bit by bit they became easier and easier to the point that they weren't simply a case of dash, grab and hit the check-out aisle asap, but became a 'stop, have a coffee and take it easy style trip.' Mind you, this DID happen over a period of some months, all most a year to be close to exact. Now, some many years later, I actually wake up some days, decide to put everything at home on hold, shower, shave, etc, ( which is something I've done at least twice every day anyway) get into some decent presentable clothes and catch a bus just to go for a ride around town all day ( here we can get a bus ticket form $2.50 that allows us to ride any bus, get on or off at any stop and travel as long as we like). Yes, like you I once had some 'bright spark?' try to get me to do the 12 steps/ Higher Power routine but that, to me, was a HUGE NO-NO simply because I felt that by accepting their idea/system I would be betraying, firstly myself and my own strengths and abilities and secondly, betraying my life-long Atheist ideas, etc. In my honest opinion, IF a person really believes that they need a God/Higher Power to help them get through problems, etc, then they ARE, in fact, failing themselves and all of those around them who try to support them. We have the strengths and abilities we need inside ourselves to really help ourselves to get through troubled times WITHOUT resorting to something that is Imaginary and Invisible, i.e. WE ARE TRULY far better WITHOUT a god than we can ever be with one.

Some walk Gingerly but sadly nobody Mary Anns anymore.

@gater There are still some tribal clans of Australian Aboriginals here still live very much as they did over 40,000 years and their predecessor did long before they crossed over into Australia from Asian/Indonesian region. As I said earlier, the Anthropologist/Archaeologists are simply hypothesising using recent to modern standards as a guide BECAUSE No-one in this day and age truly KNOWS for absolutely certain exactly how the early/earliest humans would behaved, etc.

@gater Have you ever really studied how the old, still living, native culture in the world still works? I have and a part of it is in my heritage. Truly Aboriginal Australian Natives still work completely together in hunting , etc, the only gender 'divisions' are in the separate Lores ( Rites, etc,) governing Mens' 'Business' and Women's Business' the rest is a kind of mutual cooperative system DESPITE what the modern 'experts' would have us believe.

@girlwithsmiles Good for you, well done, though attending a group for help is quite another thing when part of illness involves having Agoraphobia ( a morbid Fear of Crowds/Crowed Places), in the early stages of it, it would regularly take me at least a dozen or so attempts just go out the front door to check my mailbox if it was daylight outside, shopping for groceries, I live alone btw, was for a number of years an exercise in sheer psychological torment but these days the only places I really get the shakes about going is to the Hospital (if I need treatment for a deep cut or injury) or the cinema otherwise I'm kind of enjoying going grocery shopping and even take regular walks through the main business area of town.

I have this idea for a new product.

@Booklover No need for sarcasm here my friend, I'm not smarter than you or anyone else, it IS just that I have always been one for increasing my knowledge, etc, through continuing my education, etc, especially Tertiary Education. I gained the first of my PhD's way back in the Mid-Late 90's, a PhD in Psychology, specializing in Child and Youth in Crisis Counseling because I wanted to do something for others, especially troubled children and young people, which I still do to this day BUT on a Pro bono basis, i.e. absolutely Free of Charge, and have made myself an 'On Call Counselor' available 24/7 because troubles do NOT come about ONLY during Office hours and there are many Street Kids out there that cannot afford the outlandish fees charged by many other Counselors.

Its a known fact that history is written by only the winners.

@Biblebeltskeptic I just found out about an hour ago that my nearly 6 year old has just been asking questions that have 'upset' ( would you believe it, UPSET by a 6 year old) asking questions of her, a very out-spoken Christian Teacher, at his Public School WHY she believes there is a God that she can't she or hear?" When told by the Teacher he MUST apologise to her and God for saying such a thing, Henry just replied with, " Why, you told us to ask questions?" Henry's Mum and Dad are both Atheists, his Grandfather is also as am I and wishing to seem boastful, Henry has been a very curious, outspoken and questioning child since not long after he really started to talk and understand what he was talking about. Henry has been a fairly fluent reader since about 4 years of age simply because we all have encouraged and helped him learn to read, write and ask question of course. The School Principal was called in by Henry's Teacher in an attempt to set a punishment for him, possibly Detention, but instead the Principal told the Teacher and the class that " By asking questions is how people actually learn and Teachers SHOULD always try to answer the questions put to them Honestly and Truthfully."
