@Storm1752 Actually and historically speaking, the Ancient Romans NEVER sought to eradicate the Messianic Cult, later to become Christianity after the Council of Nicaea, 325 C.E. For the most part, the so-called 'persecutions' of the early Xstians was a propaganda device devised and utilized by the early Xstian Leaders to garner public sympathy. The Romans actually accepted the different beliefs of the peoples they conquered and often ever incorporated them into their beliefs as well. In Rome itself there were over a dozen known and well attended Synagogues that operated for centuries during the Roman Empire.

A brave act IS an act of bravery, the action and the person should be remembered and celebrated but the death should be mourned by those who were closest to the deceased and the funeral service should be a celebration of the LIFE of the Deceased and his/her action, that is the point I'm trying to put across.

Triphid replies on Jun 19, 2019:
Yes, I know quite well about most, but not ALL, kinds of pain and suffering, including the pain, grief and suffering of the loss of loved ones. But pain from grief is an emotional response is it not, and a quite correct and to be expected one at such times, whereas physical pain is something entirely different just as death is entirely different from life. Emotional 'pain' usually lessens over time but, like the pain from fractured bones/badly injured joints, etc, it never truly disappears. The pain from bone/joint injuries is 'removed' by analgesia for a time but it returns later in life as arthritic pain, the pain a mother endures whilst giving birth to her child disappears and is replaced, normally, with a deep maternal love and joy for her child, they are meaningful in their own way,

Lorrae has been gone for over 18 years now but that was by no means the reason for my posing my question and thoughts. My main reason was to get the thoughts and opinions of others on the seeming ideology that " a person's death has to be meaningful in some way, shape or form." To my way of seeing it, death, no matter whether heroic, accidental, suicidal, etc, etc, is something akin to the ending of life, nothing more, nothing less and it IS the Life that matters, NOT the death. I'm 100% certain that FriarFred (aka Antifred) will drop his 2 cents worth in and try to correct me with some biblical quotation or other here but, NEVER in Human History has a corpse been known to rise from the grave and perform something heroic or beneficial, corpses are just dead and decaying flesh, completely inanimate except for the worms and microorganism that feed and breed upon and within them, are they not? Only living, animate beings actually do things and those things, no matter whether they be great or small are what is important and have some meaning whereas death is, imho, a meaningless thing.

Yes, the 'younger' generations have swallowed that bait, hook, line and sinker, but we, the older Aussies ( in the 60 + years old brackets), still hold firm to our inherited cynicisms regarding Politicians and their like. We still hold firm to the truly Aussie ideology of ' A Fair Go for All' just as did those who came before us. @azzow2 That might just leave me out on that one, I never draw up a plan/blueprint for a project/job, I just seem to visualize it in my mind, take any necessary measurements required and then set about doing it. Like, for example, my wood burning heater yesterday, it's 3 years younger than I am BUT I noticed the steel plating at the back of the fire-box was beginning to burn through, so I measured it up, got some thicker steel plate from my 'stockpile,' cut it to shape, fitted it in place, welded it securely and then decided to test it out. Result- a 3 degree increase in temperature output and lower consumption of wood, NO plans/blueprints needed as usual.

@Marionville For decades in the 19th. Century and early 20th. there were steam-driven Paddle-wheelers plying their way up and down the Darling carrying passengers, supplies, etc, to all the towns, the people, etc, living along the river and even to the graziers inland and Broken Hill as well. They'd pick up the yearly wool-clips, etc, from the graziers, passengers, etc, from the towns and do the return trip to Adelaide. A town about 200+ miles N.E. of here, Wilcannia, was once known as the Queen City of the West and had a huge docking facility built just for the Paddle-wheelers. The Darling NEVER truly ran so low that the Paddle-wheelers couldn't make the full trip in those days and the same was when I was a child/teenager. I can never recall a time when it was running less than half full and clearly remember times when it flooded so much that you couldn't get to within 20 miles of the actual river. I last saw the Darling River in November, 2018,it was just a very mere trickle in places with the water greener than Pea Soup and stinking of rotting weeds, blue green algae, etc, and in other areas it was nothing but stagnant, slimy green puddles surrounded by dried out massive areas of river bed with fish skeletons and animal remains everywhere. All this total devastation due entirely to the Cotton and Rice Growers and their greed plus the years of absolute MIS-management by the various State, Federal Governments and their Murray-Darling Basin Management Board.

@itsmedammit BUT , is it actually a "One Off" situation or has such situations gone "under the Media Radar" previously? ere in Australia there is a Law that the proven Father, whether on Welfare or Employed, MUST contribute to the Financial needs of the Child. If on Welfare, Unemployment Benefits as the are known here, the Government Agency can, and does, take a minimum of $10 per fortnight from the benefits paid to the Father, IF employed the Employer is bound by Law to ensure, where ever possible, that a certain percentage of the Fathers pay is deducted and sent directly to the Agency and then on to the Child via the Mothers Bank Account. Plus, IF that had happened out here where I live those 2 bastards wouldn't be serving a mere 120 days behind bars, they'd be looking at a few YEARS or more. In 1948, well before I was born, a young man, aged in his late 20's, raped 3 young girls on separate occasions on the same night, when caught he 'claimed' that " God told him to do it because wanted him to have children from pure virgins," the girls, btw, were aged 10, 11 and 13 at the time. A 'misguided' Judge gave him a 3 year Suspended sentence, he then went on to rape yet another young girl who identified him to police, BUT before the police could capture him he mysteriously 'vanished' leaving only his genitals hanging from a wire noose over the Winding Frame over a disused Mining Shaft. It was determined that the Mine Shaft was far too dangerous and unstable for any attempt at rescue or recovery and the case was summarily closed. I never condone violence in any shape nor form but I do feel that justice MUST been seen to fit the crime.

Oh, the stuff that they strive so hardtop keep from the rank and file members IS truly unbelievable in its amount, etc, and if leaked out in its entirety the 'marbled' walls of the LDS would crumble to dust. For example, Mormon Missionaries MUST save and PAY for their own costs, etc, to go on Missions for the LDS. The last I heard was that THEY receive an ALLOWANCE of $100 per week from their OWN funds, not the Churches funds, for foods, etc, MUST lodge in a Church OWNED Flat/Apartment, etc, ONLY, can ONLY have 1 day per week FREE to themselves, i.e. Thursday, MUST not travel by Public Transport at ANY time and for ANY reason and MUST remain 100% celibate and not be tempted to form ANY kind of romantic relationships what-so-ever during their 'missions' which shall be for a MINIMUM of NOT least than 2 years. Somewhat DRACONIA to say the very least I do believe given that I once hinted to the Local LDS where I live that I have a ThD ( Doctorate in Theology, a FACT btw) and as such they welcomed me with both opened arms and very broad and hopeful smiles, I might add, whilst I was doing my research into the various and innumerable sects of Xstianity. They were so enthralled and rapt in the thought of having their own genuine Theologian as possible Church Member that I was actually granted UNFETTERED access to ALL Church records, etc, at my own pleasure and times of my own choosing, including the incoherent writings of both Brigham Young and Joseph Smith. I wore out many a pen and numerous note-pads, in secret, during those most revealing periods of research.

@Bierbasstard I've always had a bit of reputation for bringing some joy into the lives of kids and a few adults as well, they get to feel good and so do I. When I was doing my stint as a Paediatric Nurse, Xmas came around and I decided to do a bit of " donation collecting" for the kids in the Ward. So I got a heap of toys, etc, donated for the Kids, borrowed a Santa suit and a big red sack, dressed as Santa and rode my Honda 750 4 cylinder Motorbike the 4 kilometres to the hospital where the kids that were able to, were waiting in the Hospital Garden for Santa to arrive. The looks on their faces when Santa arrived, not in sleigh but astride a big Motorbike was and is something that I'll remember for all of my days. Mind you, the Hospital Matron was visibly unamused and later told me so quite harshly, but the Doctors, Nurses, Parents, Kids and the Hospital Board Members were absolutely thrilled that someone had taken the time, energy, etc, to do something different and special for the kids.

In other battles elsewhere, the Aussies called the Yanks ' marching mince meat'. because of their 'storm in to battle' tactics with everyone ' spread out like empty bottles on a fence just waiting for the 'Nips' to just chop them into 'minced meat' where the Aussies went in quietly, going from cover to cover, no 'fanfare' and were sneaking up on the enemy. Hence, the invented their own version of the Aussie saying about Yanks being OVERS, i.e. Over-paid, Over-Sexed and Over Here, the Aussie soldiers dubbed them as being ' Over-Paid, Over-Fed and Over-Rated.'

I don't have a problem with Telstra except that keep ringing me regularly to tell me that my Landline Account is in credit to them by $250+ and want to know what I'd like to do about it.

@Doubting Heck no, they're not a pain to me considering that I owe them nothing and that they actually owe me $250+ in credit. I suppose they've never had a customer whose account is credit before, I just keep paying my usual debit via the automatic debit arrangement with my bank every fortnight, using my phone only when really necessary and my computer for a few hours each day when and if I feel like doing so.

No, sadly not a chance, elections are all about who makes the best promises (although they always find excuses why the could NOT fulfill them) and who runs the best smear campaigns or spends the most money on those campaigns. Voters, for most part, are often as fickle as the weather unfortunately.

@Varn Well, not everyone is fooled all of the time, some of us are a whole lot older and far more wiser than the rest since we've been 'around the block' many more times than they have and our eyes are always open.

@Varn There's nothing wrong with the water down, mostly, I think its just the influence ( money /bribes, etc,,) that flow in to the political arena from BIG Overseas Corporations, like American ones for example, that are the major problem.
