Reared Southern Baptist, skeptical in my teens re: obvious contradictions in their holy book. When I came out as gay, lost friends and shunned. So much for their gospel of love. Only step into their churches now for weddings and funerals of loved ones. As I encounter others in the course of my day, I try to remember that each life has a spark of that 'Spirit of the Universe' in them and that I am neither closer nor farther from that Spirit.
