Is being an atheist important?

No and no. Atheism is purely my stance on the statement by theists that a god/s exists. I don't see any evidence to back up their claim so I am an atheist. Is it important to tell people - no. I don't tell people that I am heterosexual or that I am a socialist or that I like beer. If discussion wends its merry way in that direction then I will happily explain my views in the same way that I would about any other subject. Does it define who I am, no. Does it define how I think? Again, no. It is a conclusion that I made because that is the way that I think. Being atheist does not inform my views on morality or the law or politics (excepting that religion should play no part in politics whatsoever) as it is only one tiny reflection on who I am.

??? I have satellite and digital TV through an ariel (includes subscription channels to keep the old man happy) and I have never heard of the Royal family Channel. There is quite an interest shown in the royals, some papers and news programmes more gossip biased than others. The next bit is where my cognitive dissonance kicks in. I am a socialist and find inherited privilege contrary to my values and political leaning. However. Queen Elizabeth 2 is a superb ambassador for our country, as I am sure Charles and William will be in their turn. She has been a consistent head of state and the heritage of our royals brings in tourists and money. Yes, the royal family's upkeep is subsidised by the UK taxpayers, but would an elected head of state cost us any less and who would we end up with? Whist other heads of state have swung between left and right, dull and controversial (Putin and Trump?) we have had a neutral ambassador who is respected around the world. In theory, all laws have to be agreed by the monarch and our troops answer to the Queen and not parliament, so in theory a government could not pass laws which would remove democracy or stage a military coup. In practice however.... ...who knows?

I am wondering, when you meet someone for the first time and they start talking about being saved up...

I wonder more about their education rather than their intelligence. Indoctrination relies on intelligent people believing something without question because they trust the person giving the information. I'm pretty sure we have all made the mistake of trusting some facts we have been given by someone we trust, only to find out later that we were wrong. It's how con men and salesmen work. Priests are no different and some of them even believe it themselves.

I eat very little red meat and often eat vegetarian dishes and lots of fish. I rarely eat processed foods and like to make most meals from fresh ingredients - it's cheaper and take little extra effort. I reckon everything is ok in moderation - including moderation. A colleague at work has recently become vegan, not due to ethical ideals, but as a type 1 diabetic tried it as a way of managing her diabetes. She reports that she has found it much easier to manage her sugar levels and her insulin dose had been significantly reduced. She also reports feeling more energised, but she is does not think that this is necessarily directly due to her diet.

Number 1 ex I never spoke to again after the divorce (lived far away), Number 2 I still speak to via farceburke (still far away) and occasionally drop in to say Hi if I go to see family. Number 3 we are still good friends and she was best man at my marriage to number 4, who is the mother to my beautiful daughter. I still chat on occasion. Now with number 5 and we stay with no.3 and her husband when we visit that prat of the country. So, in summary, I still have good relationships with all of my ex partners except number 1.

Beer drinkers

I had to respond other again as I enjoy most beers. I generally have a preference for a dark mild or stout, but would choose different beers to complement the food if I am drinking with a meal. Not a great fan of the harmless fizzy pop sold as lager over here, but there are some superb European lagers out there if you search them out. I have also found a few great American craft beers too - they occasionally appear in our supermarkets. I have also just found a specialist beer shop which has recently opened not too far away - a bit expensive, but has a great selection of beers and lagers from craft breweries around the world.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed. But that could be because I am male and although I have been divorced, have either said single or with my partner/wife. Perhaps wit the divorced tag, others make presuppositions - the nods from the men thinking you are obviously on the prowl and the women wondering if you are a threat. As a widow, sympathy from the women as grieving women aren't looking to replace a faulty one that has been discarded. The men worried they could never live up to the memory of someone's true love. And maybe I have no idea what I am talking about!!!

I voted 'other' as even though I was christened and described as church of England, I was always taught to think for myself and make my own decisions about god and religion. And try as I might, I just couldn't buy into it. I couldn't get it to make sense. Every time I asked a question, the answers I got just gave me more questions or just made no sense whatsoever. The only conclusion that I could ever make was that people either didn't know the answers or made up shit just to shut me up. For years I called myself agnostic, but eventually realised that the god claim was no different to zeus, thor, pixies or the Loch Ness monster. I am an atheist. If someone satisfactorily proved a god exists, then I will be a theist.

Do as little harm as possible and try to stick with what is in our best interest as a species. So in many areas is pretty subjective, but if you have agreement on what morality is then we can usually work out something resembling a moral code. For me, if something promotes or improves wellbeing, then it is probably moral - but it is difficult to promote my own wellbeing without someone else's suffering. hence the do as little harm as possible statement.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I was a snob in any particular area. I love food and although I detest fast food (I would rather eat my own vomit than eat a big mac!), I couldn't care less if people want to feast on popcorn or drink red wine with fish or any other weird combination. I get pissed off at French chefs refuse to cook steak well done for my father in law - he's paying and he's eating it. If you can't cook something the way somebody likes it, then you are a crap chef. Rant over. I also prefer craft beers, but can still appreciate a cheap lager on a hot day in the garden. My only real bit of snobbery is that I am really pedantic about grammar and spelling. However, I do refrain from commenting about others mistakes on here and other fora, as I do understand that some do have specific issues, some have missed big chunks of education and as I don't know their personal circumstances it would be inappropriate to constantly correct. Unless of course it's my mate Jon who is an English teacher or a meme or shop sign done by someone who should know better - then it's fair game!!!

I think you will struggle to find a country where there is no communal violence or hate crime, but there are countries where this is the exception rather than the norm. Scandinavian countries always fare well in surveys of societal happiness and have lower crime rates than many other countries. The UK is pretty good, but there are some areas with a higher incidence of violent crime.

There were a couple of them one was my geography teacher, who when challenged about why I would ever need to know that Bristol's main import in the 18th century was tobacco, spent some time explaining that I would probably never need to know this, but his mission was to teach us how to learn and that it was the process of learning that was important. (And 6 months ago was the answer in a pub quiz that gave us the extra point over other teams to win!). The other teacher was the worst and the best - as a history teacher he was crap - I hated history at school, it was so dull. Then as I went into the sixth form he taught logic and critical thinking as part of general studies and his passion and enthusiasm for the subject was infectious and I caught the bug.

I also cannot accept that 'accidental' is an appropriate term for the creation of the universe either. Even if there was a connected series of events prior to the creation of this universe, how does your friend move from a connected series of events to "God did it"? He is the one making the assertion and thus he has the burden of proof.

Like many others I have no idea what is meant by spiritual. When I have asked people who say they are spiritual what they mean they are usually unable to explain without the word spirit and everything they mention is about feelings or emotions. Do I have feelings and emotions? - yes. Is there anything supernatural about them? - no. Do we understand everything about our emotions and why some people are slaves to them and others can control them? - no, but I have no evidence that there is anything supernatural about this.

Here for a bit of (slightly) intelligent conversation, chat with people from different countries and culture and to be a bit mischievous and contentious from time to time. I suspect that like other fora I have frequented, some people meet up and make friendships and some relationships, but mostly after they have chatted for a while and got to know each other better. And generally far more successfully than meeting through pure dating sites.

The cognitive dissonance starts when something happens close to home that you can believe you can justify killing someone - the difficulty being that everyone will draw the line at a different point. I believe in justice, not retribution.

I'm not sure what you mean. I have male and female friends and so does my wife. Some of the friends are mutual and some from work and other times. We sometimes spend time together and as individuals. Love and friendship are not emotions that have a fixed amount that has to be shared or it runs out. Why would I not be OK with her having friends?

I often had that problem with some of the students I work with until a teacher recognised that I was making assumptions about their prior knowledge and learning and used a ladder analogy. There is no point trying to show someone what is on the top step unless they have first climbed the bottom steps so that they can see what you are looking at. We often assume that others have a similar understanding and knowledge to us which very often isn't the case. It's also how economists and politicians convince the masses that giving more money and tax breaks to their rich friends and putting austerity on the masses will allow the rich to employ more and make the poor richer.....

Gnostic (theist or atheist) claims to KNOW that a god does or does not exist. Agnostic understands that we cannot know whether a god is possible or not without evidence. These are claims about knowledge. Theism and gnosticism are different prongs of the same question, theism is a claim of belief, gnosticism relates to knowledge which is a subset of belief. Personally, I call myself an atheist. I do not believe the claims of theists and I see no evidence that any gods do or could exist. Do I know that in any circumstance in any universe that it is impossible for a god/s to exist? No, so in the strictest sense I am an agnostic atheist in that I do not believe any god/s exist, but I know that the null hypothesis is impossible to prove. And just to clarify, I am referring to all gods.

it depends how young you are talking about. Pre-school I used to love "Watch With Mother" on the BBC. These were shows that were about 10 minutes long and had The Wooden Tops, Bill and Ben, Andy Pandy and Picture Book. My favourite though, was always Rag, Tag and Bobtail. Which I suppose probably has something to do with my love of nature and wildlife. Not very often socially, but I do occasionally use socratic questioning at school with a couple of students who are some sort of Christians and one who is Muslim. I don't generally express my lack of belief to them, I just generally say that I do not hold their belief and ask them to explain their belief to me. "So how does that work" "Why do you think that is true" "How can you check that is the case" I don't dismiss their beliefs - I ask why I should choose their faith and not be a Hindu/Buddhist/or whatever. I try to make them think about things and try to teach them to be skeptics. Not easy in a school for students who have been permanently excluded from other school that no-one else wants to teach, but I will persevere!

If you could live anywhere for a year, where would you choose?

If I had a choice and the financial security to do it, I wouldn't live anywhere. I would spend the year touring - either by public transport or motorcycle. I would make my way around the world.stopping off in places as it suited me and living as the locals do, not using posh hotels, but b&b or camping. I rarely go to the same place twice for holidays, no matter how much I like a place (short breaks in Scotland excepted) as there is so much of the world out there to see. And contrary to popular belief, most of it friendly and welcoming.

"All beliefs are equal" Really? 'I believe in the Loch Ness Monster' is equal to 'I believe doctors are unnecessary as god will heal my child's cancer'? Not all beliefs are equal, some are dangerous - White supremacists? Hitler? We can hypothesise about life elsewhere in the universe, as we know that abiogenesis is possible given the right conditions. The universe is really big (honest!) so it is possible that these conditions could exist elsewhere and it is possible that life could form elsewhere. Is it probable? I don't know. At present we have only one example of life existing in the universe, so on that basis it is impossible to calculate probability. On the god claim, we have precisely no confirmed existence of god anywhere in the universe so have no evidence that it is even possible let alone probable. With the evidence we currently have for life in the universe, I can confidently state that there is life on earth.

I really wonder what is wrong with these people who deny climate warming.

Went to uni to qualify as a social worker, But I've always been an atheist. Even at primary school I could't accept the supernatural stories that didn't make sense. Who made god? If he was always there, what did he do in the eternity before earth? Why did he keep killing people? My dad had always told me to ask questions and make up my own mind, so in some respects, yes, education made me an atheist.

First things first. I live in the UK and have never been to the states. However, we are bombarded with American TV and film police dramas. Now I know that TV is not the real world and situations and characters are larger than life, but with few exceptions police are portrayed as the 'good guys' fighting crime and rooting out the bent coppers and ne'er do wells. Which on the surface sounds really good. But in reality, what we see is a bunch of loose canons who shoot first and ask questions later, beat confessions out of suspects, break into properties and totally ignore the rules and safeguards in place that are there to protect everybody. Combine this with the constant drip feed of innocent (mostly black) people being shot because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and the fact that most people's experience of police is via TV and media - and especially now social media - you can start to see why the public's perception can start to become very negative of the whole profession. It's just a theory you know..... ;-) (Translation to science speak - these are my thoughts on the matter and the hypothesis I am putting up for peer review.)

How comfortable are you with the idea of same gender sex?

I have no issue with sexual relationships between consenting adults and I am comfortable with whatever choice suits the individuals concerned. I also find it a sad indictment of society that this is actually an issue and I hope that as marriage becomes accessible to all in more places around the world that it will continue to become less of an issue. My dream is that one day, people will feel comfortable in their own skin and be judged on who they are not how they look and who they choose as their partner.

I have previously answered similar questions elsewhere, but to put it in a nutshell, I am an agnostic atheist. Atheist because I see no evidence that the claims of theists are true and have found no evidence that a god does or could exist. Agnostic because I do not know that a god cannot exist in any form in any universe. But until there is any credible evidence that a god exists then I do not believe.

Are you teaching your children that Santa Claus/Easter Bunny/Tooth Fairy are real?

Imagination is great for development and my daughter was fed the myths of Santa and the tooth fairy. When she started to question we helped her to set up experiments so she could work out whether or not santa and the tooth fairy were real. We can all enjoy myths and fantasy and ghost stories, but as long as we have been taught the tools to separate fact from fiction, then I see no problems with it.

Since most but not elaborate weddings are in some way relgious based and most weddings in that realm...
