WilliamCharles comments on Mar 22, 2019:
I've been providing a few of what I think are counter-arguments to some of their assertions, mostly in the form of links, but there's not a lot of desire to lock horns in the arena of ideas by the opposition, who in their conversations with each other, are unwavering in their certainty of the superiority of their worldview. A throwaway acknowledgement of the ills of crony capitalism by the group creator, but that's about it. In my time here (agnostic..com) , I've found little desire across the board by anyone to continue any debate/discussion beyond a few initial replies back and forth, but that's most definitely everyone's individual prerogative. I'm at least encouraged the the left is more willing to critique their own side through a clear lense. I've seen nothing of the sort at any level by the opposition. They merely ignore the many flaws of the "champions" of their side. In fact, I ask the group creator to give me a name of any "champion" of the economic model she supports so I could read up on it... but nothing but crickets. If you've ever seen right winger Stephen Moore (AEI?), he's embarrassing as to the level of his incompetence. This is the chucklehead that Dolt 45 wants to nominate for the Fed if I'm not mistaken. I could name a bunch for my views starting with Chris Hedges (for a critique of the current system). Notice the otherwise dispassionate name calling here, @TheMiddleWay. Over there, I've largely eschewed such language. Anyway, make note that even though I've answered the @Renickulous interrogative, no attempt to respond to any of the questions I put to him. Over at Republican Atheists he's been like a gnat... annoying, but with zero to offer anywhere he's shown his face.
Progressive gun owners - What are your thoughts on calls to ban certain firearms or firearm types ...
WilliamCharles comments on Mar 22, 2019:
Assault rifles are already illegal in my state, though it is common to call the semiautomatic rifle I own an assault rifle. I remember a law passed to outlaw firearms with scary looking features, such as with the TEC-9 handgun (though with that particular weapon it was mostly the high capacity magazines at issue). There were other weapons that had the exact same firepower, but if it looked military (flash suppressor, pistol grip, etc.) it may have made the ban list. Again, it makes me wonder how easily some are willing to forfeit a right of someone else, just because they think it doesn't apply to them. I'm all for keeping weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat and favor sensible restrictions (domestic abusers being at the top of the list). But but the GOP always gets lot of mileage out of wedge issues around election time, and as a progressive firearms owner, I think my Constitutional rights come into play as well. The 2nd Amendment is not about a right to hunt. At the time it was written it protected private ownership of the most advanced weapons of their time. Yes, I know about their place in the history of keeping slaves subdued, but we also have the threat of an actual civil war at some point. The goddamn Yam-in-Chief just talked about his biker, LEO, and military supporters taking things into ther own hands. The God, guns, and gays crowd is heavily armed. I'll still have a flower or two to place down the barrel of their rifles, but a Plan B is not an unwarranted precaution either. I'm deep into a politically red county where I live. To those that think there should be no private firearm ownership, work to change the Constitution. To those that think the effectiveness needs to be restricted, would black powder muzzle loaders be cumbersome enough for you? I own a historical curio. The same Mosin-Nagant Soiet sniper rifle Vasely Zaytsev used in WWII. It is technically a combat weapon, though single round bolt action. If someone murders with this type of firearm, would someone else make the argument to turn them all in as well? I once attended a Firing Line taping on internet freedom back in the day. Arianna Huffington was on the panel (before she became a liberal) and said that if outlawing internet freedom would save just *one* child from being abused... that it would be worth it. How many here would agree with that logic?

I had some truly wonderful Xian friends at work. One said to me, "You're the most Christian person I know." I told her, "You take that back or I'll report you to HR." We both laughed as she went on to explain, "You do nice things for people just for the sake of being nice." I would often quote her to god-botherers who were more militant with their own proselytizing. WilliamCharles comments on Mar 21, 2019:
9/11 is the litmus test. So many of the things that reverberate to today are based on the unwillingness to demand full, open and transparent investigations of the attack, the crime scene forensics, and the apparent response failures. Anyone not in lockstep with the coming “payback” was a traitor, and anyone questioning the official narrative was a nutter. That the people so readily dismissing the skeptics, did not heed to call themselves to demand what the commission itself determined; that a proper investigation was needed to uncover the truth. Remember, the alternate explanation to deride conspiracy, was the supposedly comforting notion that incompetence, an unrelated type of criminality (the destruction of evidence), the desire to cover your butt, and a string of bad luck and/or remarkable coincidence, explained the seeming contradictions and that the right enemy had been targeted anyway, so no time to navel gaze as we needed to get our bloodbath up and running. My recollection is somewhat shorter as to what I saw and what we lost. I live in So Cal and commute to downtown LA, and have for over 20+ years. For *exactly* a day and a half (the same amount of time the air stays smog free after a good rain), the normally selfish and inattentive motorists drove in manner virtually unseen before or since. Over that two day period, they actually showed noticeable consideration and no longer drove oblivious to those around them, not caring who they cut off or didn’t let in or honked at for going too slow, or not getting out of the way fast enough… they treated the other drivers as fellow Americans that were also possibly traumatized or numb and that the default position might be that they would appreciate a random act of kindness from a stranger who might just cut another person a break for no other reason than they thought the anonymous person could use one. And then, as if it never happened in the first place, it was over. That was how long it took to revert back to type, and embrace dysfunction as normalcy. And that’s how we got to where we are today. There are some things in life that we can’t turn back the clock on, but tragically that is true even on those things we could turn back the clock on. We’re just not that smart or that caring, and I don’t think it’s overly pessimistic to say that we never will be. ~ LanceThruster

WilliamCharles comments on Mar 21, 2019:
Not exactly the same thing, but my sister is a ginger. I've noticed I get uncomfortable should a red-headed date look too much like her. Not a deal breaker necessarily, but it's a reaction that I'm quite aware of. There's men that remind me of jerks I've known (chubby bearded men sometimes remind me of a Christo-fascist, former LAPD, bully in my vanpool), but that's usually where the similarities end. Women that look like those that I have been hurt by stir up strong emotions, but I try to get past that.

I have a problem with punching down. There's no reason to marginalize people within groups for the acts of those merely sharing similar demographics. For instance, I can acknowledge the crimes of white people without necessarily being responsible for them. :------: People are =/= to their religion I am most definitely an infidel in that I have no belief in any god or gods. A person’s individual godview is the most basic right possible that a human being can have. I personally reject Islam, Judaism, and Christianity (among others)… but do not reject Muslims, Jews, and Christians. A person’s religion and religious culture are most predictably based on their family of origin, where they were born (geography), and when they were born (i.e., no Xians pre-Christ). I stand with all people on the planet willing to work together as a species to live peacefully with each other and our environment. That does not change regardless of the actions of some who think their ‘godview’ justifies any number of horrible acts. I remember reading this after watching the documentary on Wavy Gravy (Saint Misbehavin' ), and thought how much the United States could be a force for good if they actually led by example instead of being the murderous hypocrites they are. :------------------------: "Wavy and Hog Farmers decided to drive supplies to Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) after one of the disasters that regularly befall the people of the low-elevation country. They drove across Europe and Asia in a bus caravan, stopping in Eastern Europe where they awoke surrounded by tanks and soldier. The friendly soldiers provided them with a ton of socks to distribute – an act of spontaneous generosity that Wavy admits changed his views – of both the Warsaw Bloc and military conscripts. They were welcomed and feasted in Iraq and in Afghan towns where people had photos of John Kennedy on the wall. (One can imagine it’ll be a long, long time before a US President graces those wall again.)"

This brings to mind an element of working for our mutual benefit that has always concerned me. Using the analogy of a commune, how would/should we deal with those "freeloaders" (essentially) whose actions (or often inaction) threatens the health of the group as a whole. I have often argued that the family is the perfect example of, "To each according to their needs, from each according to their abilities." A family doesn't withhold food from infants for not "pulling their own weight," but at some point incorporate children into age appropriate chores like dishes and sweeping.

Props! Something to keep in mind. :------------------------------------------: "Still, in the universities or in any other institution, you can often find some dissidents hanging around in the woodwork—and they can survive in one fashion or another, particularly if they get community support. But if they become too disruptive or too obstreperous—or you know, too effective—they’re likely to be kicked out. The standard thing, though, is that they won’t make it within the institutions in the first place, particularly if they were that way when they were young—they’ll simply be weeded out somewhere along the line. So in most cases, the people who make it through the institutions and are able to remain in them have already internalized the right kinds of beliefs: it’s not a problem for them to be obedient, they already are obedient, that’s how they got there. And that’s pretty much how the ideological control system perpetuates itself in the schools—that’s the basic story of how it operates, I think." https://chomsky.info/power01/

People are =/= to their religion I am most definitely an infidel in that I have no belief in any god or gods. A person’s individual godview is the most basic right possible that a human being can have. I personally reject Islam, Judaism, and Christianity (among others)…but do not reject Muslims, Jews, and Christians. A person’s religion and religious culture are most predictably based on their family of origin, where they were born (geography), and when they were born (i.e. no Xians pre-Christ). I stand with all people on the planet willing to work together as a species to live peacefully with each other and our environment. That does not change regardless of the actions of some who think their ‘godview’ justifies any number of horrible acts. I reject those who use such acts to demonize people who are damned for nothing more than ‘guilt by association.’ ~ LanceThruster
A forgotten hero stopped the My Lai massacre 50 years ago today - Los Angeles Times
WilliamCharles comments on Mar 19, 2019:
I wrote this years ago here: http://salem-news.com/articles/november222010/tran-duc-tk.php LanceThruster December 6, 2010 9:34 am (Pacific time) The horror and sadness of Mr. Duc Tran Van's recounting of the massacre of beloved family members and neighbors while so very young is heart-wrenching. He too was one of the heroes of that day as his actions prevented his brother and himself from becoming fallen victims of the slaughter. His survival allowed him to be there for his remaining family and share his story with others in a most poignant and graphic way. Armed conflict always involves senseless death and destruction, but what he experienced at the hands of those who believed their own sacrifices were for the good of his people was beyond the pale. I became draft age in ’75 as America’s direct military involvement in the conflict had essentially ceased. I had considered enlisting but did not feel I could trust my government with regards to those it might determine warranted killing. I was reminded of this when my friend’s son Adam, part of Marines 1/5 for the fall of Baghdad in the second Gulf War, returned home from Iraq. When I cautiously asked him about his experiences in a combat zone, the first words out of his mouth were, “We killed people for no reason.” I learned from him that even with very specific rules of engagement, innocent people would die. A vehicle would approach his checkpoint too fast, too erratic, and not heed signals to stop or slow down, and he and his fellow Marines would fire upon the vehicle and its occupants. He told me about the time he did just that, and when he went to inspect the vehicle, it was full of dead and wounded women and children, some of whom were screaming or crying or moaning, in terror or pain or anguish. He bears no physical scars from his tour of duty, but is on PTSD status. I was traumatized by merely hearing of some of his encounters over there. I can only imagine the toll it takes actually living them. To Mr. Duc Tran Van; I am truly so very sorry you and your family and your country suffered so as a brutal war was waged across your land. I have tried to remain informed and active politically so that I could do whatever I can to help prevent my country from inflicting further such tragedies on others. As you might imagine, sometimes I too feel very helpless in this regard. You and Tim King have done much to remind me that sometimes courage can be as simple a thing as to just keep moving forward. And for that, you have my sincere gratitude.

Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot." ~ Carl Sagan - Pale Blue Dot

Elvis Presley-Crazy Little Thing Called Love Someone's been doing the time warp. ?
WilliamCharles comments on Mar 18, 2019:
Jimmy Ellis is the singer and the artist who sang this rockabilly version of the song. He had a voice just like Elvis and even wore a mask to look like him. He covered songs and even played with some other artists (johnny cash, carl perkins, jeery lee lewis) heres what i just summarized but more detailed from a review @ amazon.com of the 'orion' cd, which contains the track in question. The Liner notes tell the rather strange, but sad story of Jimmy Ellis: the mask-wearing Elvis soundalike, impersonator whose career ended as tragically as Presley's. These are the original recordings that Ellis did for Sun Records from 1972-1980. There are "duets" with Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich and Johnny Cash: but they're ALL overdubbed with Ellis' voice. This was a ploy by Shelby Singleton who purchased Sun Records in 1969. It's not that Ellis didn't have talent. Listen to his cover of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". And in 1981, he finally took the mask off (he wore it because he didn't look like Elvis). Like Elvis, Jimmy Ellis died a tragic death. At age 53, he and his fiancee were shot and killed inside their convenience store by robbers. Calling VH1-this would be a great Behind The Music episode. This is a CD for Elvis fans, of course, but also for those who have an interest in the strange ways of the music business. Irish roots to the 7th Cavalry song too. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IKI4GQ4c9g0&t=11s Garryowen" is an old Irish quick-step that can be traced back to the early 1860's. In 1867, "Garryowen" was adopted by the 7th Cavalry Regiment as the official Air (tune) of the Regiment, and the historical nickname given to the 7th Cavalry Regiment and Troopers. It became the Official tune of the 1st Cavalry Division in 1981. "Garryowen" has become undoubtedly the most famous of all the regimental marches in the Army. The word garryowen is derived from Irish, the proper name Eóghan ("born of the yew tree") and the word for garden garrai - thus "Eóghan's Garden". The term refers to an area of the town of Limerick, Ireland. "Garryowen" is known to have been used by Irish regiments as a drinking song. As the story goes, one of the Irish "melting pot" Troopers of the 7th Cavalry, under the influence of "spirits", was singing the song. By chance Custer heard the melody, liked the cadence, and soon began to hum the tune to himself. The tune has a lively beat, that accentuates the cadence of marching horses, and for that reason was adopted as the regimental song soon after Custer arrived at Fort Riley, Kansas to take over command of the 7th Cavalry Regiment. It was the last song played for Custer's men as they left General Terry's column at the Powder River and rode into history. The tune became the official "Air" of the Regiment in 1867 and actually became the official tune of the entire 1st Cavalry Division in 1981. The significance of the tune in the Regiment's history led to it being incorporated into the Regimental crest, along with the raised saber. When Soldiers salute an officer, they also traditionally give the "greeting of the day" or the regimental motto. So when any soldier, anywhere, in the 7th Cav salutes, they sound off with "Garry Owen, Sir!" Original Version: Let Bacchus' sons be not dismayed But join with me, each jovial blade Come, drink and sing and lend your aid To help me with the chorus: Chorus Instead of spa, we'll drink brown ale And pay the reckoning on the nail; No man for debt shall go to jail From Garryowen in glory. We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun, We'll make the mayor and sheriffs run We are the boys no man dares dun If he regards a whole skin.(Chorus) Our hearts so stout have got no fame For soon 'tis known from whence we came Where'er we go they fear the name Of Garryowen in glory. (Chorus) We'll beat the bailiffs out of fun, we'll make the mayor and sheriffs run, we are the boys no man dare dun, if he regards a whole skin. (Chorus) Our hearts so stout have got us fame, for soon 'tis known from whence we came, where're we go they dread the name, ...

"What did the Black and Tans achieve? They served no purpose for the British government as they simply failed to stop what the IRA was doing. However, they did succeed in getting the republican cause a great deal of civilian support simply because of their acts – people may not have joined the IRA, but they were supporters of it and gave what financial help they could to the movement. I once ditched high school and went hiking alone in the local mountains. I went down a trail a couple of miles and sat leaning backwards resting on my hands in the gravel beside the stream for about twenty minutes listening to burblings of the water over the rocks. After awhile as I was about to get up knocking the gravel from my palms, I noticed a rattlesnake perfectly camoflaged in the brown and tan gravel sunning itself as well about a foot or so alongside where my left hand just was. My heart skipped a best or two. If bitten I would have surely died. It was pre-cell days (no signal in the canyon regardless) and I would have had a two mile uphill hike just to get to my car. It was quite a beautiful animal, perfectly adapted to its surroundings. I do admit to finding a forked stick to immobilize the head to hear its rattle but afterward left it in peace, still a bit shaken.
