Has a certain song ever sounded faster than usual to you on the radio?
WilliamCharles comments on Sep 21, 2018:
Sometimes. I had a console stereo that the turntable played a hair faster on. Drove me nuts cuz I used it for recording. We used to get local LA radio KROQ to play The Tubes "White Punks on Dope" at 78rpm. It was a hoot.

Are you Opimistic about the future of the Human Race?
WilliamCharles comments on Aug 11, 2018:
Not optimistic as to the harm being done environmentally. Also not optimistic that humanity can find an alternate to its rapacious nature. I think it's in our DNA. We utilize our most Machiavellian traits far too readily.

What's your favorite name?
WilliamCharles comments on Jul 10, 2018:
Another thing comes to mind. What are your thoughts on ethnic names and those who opt to Americanize them. Many of my former Chinese coworkers chose an anglo version of their name, but most of the Indian and Arabic ones did not. I always liked for them to go with their own preferences. There were a few that took me awhile to get the pronunciation right. Another coworker had to correct me for my sloppy pronunciation of his name. Yohan (rhymes with wand not hand). Finally, and along somewhat similar lines, what do you all think of the trend of names that go to extreme of spelling or other irregularities? Many are the butt of jokes for being too "ghetto." Again, I think personal choice pretty much trumps all, but there are some names it seems unfortunate to saddle a child with, though if they become famous, the uniqueness is often seen as a plus. Oprah's name was supposedly a misspelling of the biblical name Orpah.
What's your favorite name?
WilliamCharles comments on Jul 10, 2018:
I think my online nom de plume is pretty cool. LanceThruster. I like the double entendre, but it was meant to be reminiscent of Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, and the like (Buzz Lightyear came later). I came up with it around 1981 or so. There's even a Fairly Oddparents character by that name (also came after my debut). It's part of the Crash Nebula cartoon within a cartoon. My political content on Facebook is on my LanceThruster page. People I'd debate with online said it sounded like a gay porn star (not that there's anything wrong with that). I said they must be projecting because it works just as well for a straight actor. And then I'd ask if they were hiring. ?

WilliamCharles comments on Jul 9, 2018:
If I can do it without demeaning a person, I like trying to lighten the mood if possible. You'd be surprised how often, "Oh, give the baby his bottle!" is the proper response. If a person just needs a healthy vent, I'm fine with that. If they insist on you being a part of that drama, not so much. I like to add following my tales of woe, no matter how trivial, "No one in the entire history of humanity has *ever* suffered as much as I have." ;)

Do you think a civil war is coming in the U.S.?
WilliamCharles comments on Jul 2, 2018:
Thank you everybody for your input. I think what is currently escalating is what the military refers to as "low intensity conflict." That is, something short of full blown war. The rhetoric is heated and each side demonizes the other to its own standards (varying depending on subgroup). Certain occurrences are seen as skirmishes whether acts of violence ascribed to either side, or claims of over-the-top rhetoric, or acts of incivility. Look to history for examples of how the state reacts. Water cannons are being called out on ICE protesters. Legislation has been proposed to criminalize peaceful protest including severe penalties for even being at a gathering where any acts of violence or destruction takes place. This ignores the regular tactic of planting agent provacatuers to shape perceptions of a given protest. I feel the sad reality of the side that claims to love America clearly hates over half the population. The thin veneer of civility is quite apparent at times and it seems that it would not take much to strip it away, considering the level of friction that seems to be increasing.

WilliamCharles comments on Jun 16, 2018:
Quite enjoying the twists and turns. Was actually surprised by the Thandie Newton interview with Trevor Noah on TDS before the 2nd season had begun where she kept insisting, "They're just things!" It was almost like a spoiler as the 1st season seemed to establish them as having some human-like self-awareness. It reminds me a bit of the thematic differences between Philip K. Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" versus the first "Bladerunner" movie. In the book, no matter how hard the replicants tried, they were lacking that basic essence of what it means to be human. In the movie, that was pretty much flipped. The replicants were on their way to gaining that spark of humanity that humans were progressively losing (as evidenced by Rutger Hauer's "tears in the rain" monologue).
