I think it starts with small things like letting someone with fewer items go ahead of you at the grocery checkout and stuff. That builds into a habit. I'm pleased when it seems like a big deal to someone. One time I had to take a bathroom break while getting work done at the dental school. I had the gear all in my mouth still but took time to hold the door open for a dental student whose hands were full with her equipment tray when all the other students coming and going through the double doors ignored her. She looked at me exasperated and said loudly, "Thank you!," and looking around to the other students, "What's so hard about that?!?" What it needs to be combined with is the understanding that some people become users and take advantage of the good natured. Clueing them into that dynamic is also important. Usually with the small stuff, it doesn't matter as the actions and lack of appreciation of others in that regard shouldn't direct your own behavior, but one must also be on guard when their own disregard for the burden on others can have consequences too severe to be justified.

Now here's what I was trying to get my head around when discussing this at another website. I asked how long a photon might take to emerge from a supergiant or hypergiant star. The person that offered an answer actually thought it would take less time than our sun because of its overall composition would be less dense. While that might be true in the outer shells, I would think that the sheer mass would make the core and surrounding shells even more dense. I often find it an opportunity to express my opposing views. There are indeed though, many times that I choose not to engage. JW's came to my door recently, and I just took their free liturature politely (I like to read - it was an invitation to their "Jesus died for your sins" lecture, with a promise of no asking for donations). I declined to watch their 2 minute presentation on their tablet device as I was pretty grubby answering the door unexpectedly. I might have traded worldviews with them, but the next door neighbors are JW's, and they're really sweet people with adorable kids. Not sure if they'd forbid their kids to interact with me if they knew of my own atheism. I just let pass the things the kids say that show that they're being groomed in the faith. Things like not celebrating holidays and the like. The little boy once even said to me that I should join, LOL. I simply told him that I have a different way of looking at the world and left it at that.

I have the type of waste baskets that are made to hold plastic grocery bags as a liner. I haven't bought can liners in decades. Even if they're ratty, I double them up and put a few sheets of newsprint in the bottom to prevent puntures and absorb any moisture. Because they're free, when there's something particularly messy, like with food prep, it can get tied off and taken straight out to the trash. I always look for ways to recycle whenever possible. My favorite "invention" is when I trim the top of an 18 egg foam egg carton (the middle ridges on both sides so you get two sets) and place them upside down inside of the small plastic bins packs of mushrooms come in. This makes a tray to place your sink sponge in. It allows the air to circulate so it dries quicker and cleaner, keeps the counter dry, and when it starts to get scummy and a rinse doesn't cure it, you throw it into the recycle bin and make another. There's at least one on and/or under every sink in the house. Reduce, re-use, recycle, reclaim, repurpose.

Today I had my appts and now I'm sitting at home on my computer waiting to eat some lunch.
