Here is a question for us Atheists.
Willow_Wisp comments on Oct 26, 2020:
The question "what was before the big bang?" is like asking what travels faster then the speed of light, and for many of the same reasons. In fact no one knows the big bang happened for certain even if all the clues say so. Most Christians believe the big bang too as well as evolution. So there's no linkage between atheism and any scientific theory. I just don't believe the religious bullshit, and no one should if they're honest.

We never have, but in this case I’ll argue we should because she’s clearly not what the majority of Americans want. I am a death-row executioner
Willow_Wisp comments on Oct 23, 2020:
Much to the surprise of many who, logically, would assume that shortening someone's life should be cheaper than paying for it until natural expiration, it turns out that it is actually cheaper to imprison someone for life than to execute them. In fact, it is almost 10 times cheaper! One might ask, “how can that be?” Every state that has a death penalty also has an intricate system and basis for appeals. These appeals can relate to everything from due process claims to equal protection (minorities are convicted at far higher rates than whites) and, most famously, to the cruel and unusual punishment prohibition of the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The result? In California, the slowest state in the Union, the average wait time for someone sentenced to death is 20 years between conviction and execution. The national average is just under nine years. And, while all of this waiting is going on, the process has not ground to a halt. Quite the opposite, in fact. The appeals process consumes hours of labor, not only by court staff, but also by the often court-appointed, tax payer funded, and constitutionally guaranteed public defenders. As a result, some estimate that it costs U.S. taxpayers between $50 and $90 million dollars more per year (depending on the jurisdiction) to prosecute death penalty cases than life sentences. A number of states have taken notice of this fact, particularly in the wake of the “Great Recession.” As state budgets shrank, unnecessary expenditures, even ones that are usually fairly politically popular like the death penalty, found themselves on the chopping block. Several states decided that the cost was unreasonable and decided to either enact a ban on death penalty cases or change the law to eliminate it as a possible sentence all together. Another reason many states have seen skyrocketing costs and have considered banning the death penalty: DNA evidence. Genetic testing is not terribly cheap, nor are the experts required to testify about the results. But, now that hundreds have been exonerated as a result of genetic testing, it is clear that it is an invaluable tool in the criminal process and has helped to prevent innocent men from facing death for crimes they did not commit. Therefore, despite the expense, DNA testing is here to stay despite adding to the expense of a death penalty case. Death penalty trials are more expensive for several other reasons, as well. They often require additional attorneys, including some with specific levels of experience who are “death penalty certified.” Needless to say, these attorneys tend to command higher salaries than first year public defenders. Security costs are often higher for death penalty cases, both in the courtroom and in prison where death ...

God evolved with human hubris. The older the God the more mortal they seem. To get an “All powerful God” took time and a growing sense of relative invulnerability in the minds of men. When great beast might prey on you and the climate was harsher you couldn’t be sure if your next hunt would be your last. Hurn the Hunter was good enough for Celts living in Britannia. He could fend for himself, that was his God power, and being immortal. Then they started taking on cosmic consequences like the convoluted associations of the River Nile and seasons with Osiris. The Hebrew God started off as a volcano God. He mutated as culture changed into something akin to a Cosmic Consciousness reflecting how smug we are when we compare ourselves to our Bronze Age ancestors. It’s all truly organic, very great apish.

Why is anyone surprised at anything one way, self serving, ass hat Trump does or says. He's more random then Kramer from Seinfeld, much darker, angrier and weirder in fact. The term "dangerously unstable" doesn't do justice to the reality of Trump.

As an entity self possessed I know that ultimately I'll be dead, and then it'll be as if I never existed in the first place. As forgotten as any other animal that died and left no trace. From that knowledge I'm good with nihilism, and I personally think Nietzsche is over rated. But as part of my celebration of my memories, and life, and all those people that I feel love for that can't participate in my feelings due to them being MY feelings I honor life of all kinds. I see no benefit in making life worse for any creature human or otherwise. I have empathy, but expect nothing for it beyond being left the fug alone to wrestle joy from the world that will mean nothing at all to anyone other than myself. As for "evil", it's just another four letter word, and means only what you think it means, which to me is nothing at all, I think the same thing with "good."

That's what Trumps entire cabinet is about, Christian Dominionist. It's why Evangelicals support such a "Beast" that more closely matches the descriptions of the Antichrist than a Saint. This is why these people are fugin dangerous. It'll take decades for our education system to recover from Betsy DeVos and she's only one case. Look at that bitch Barrett that's about to be on the Supreme Court. These people are dangerous humanity obstructing animals, all gay for Jesus. It's outrageous.

You know that ALL prophecy is self fulfilling prophesy right? Like Joan of Arc. Supposedly Merlin predicted her, (It was actually a French mystic) who said that France would be beaten down by a woman but led to victory by a maid. So some people think Elizabeth was Queen of England but she wouldn't be around for another hundred years, King Henry VI was King. Yet it was in Frances interest to have this prediction come true. So this teenage girl Joan was declared to be the "maid." This situation was politically expedient for Charles VII, and it's the only relatively recent example of a female general, if you can call her that, in Medieval European history. Nothing else explains a commoner, a female commoner, rising to such prominence in politics during such a misogynistic time. Joan would have lived a quiet forgotten life had it not been for a stupid prophecy that didn't accurately predict anything at all really. Should we have a catastrophic, arguably "end times" event it will be because these jackasses will make it happen. Clearly they are doing all they can to bring on the end of time, which makes them not just stupid, but dangerous and terroristic.
More false news?

RT is a state-controlled international television network funded by the Russian federal tax budget. It operates pay television channels directed to audiences outside of Russia, as well as providing Internet content in English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, and Russian. They're propaganda so I dismiss them out of hand. I can't have a serious conversation about anything they're being used as a source for. Thanks for trying fancy bear.

If you were raised religious as a child, what is your worst religious memory?
Willow_Wisp comments on Oct 21, 2020:
I was raised in an Assembly of God Church in Clayhatchee Alabama. The Church itself is now a fire station, or so I hear. I clearly remember the night sister Treadaway was under the influence of the "Holy Spirit" she was jabbering like a 33 1/3 rpm album set on the 78 rpm speed. She danced up and down the rows of pews. When she got to the choir area that was slightly elevated she grabbed a wicker bottomed chair in each hand and started spinning like a Dervish, chanting like a Voodoo witch doctor. Suddenly one of the chairs slipped from her grip and flew toward the pulpit hitting Pastor Johnson in the head knocking him over. She on the other hand found herself unbalanced and stumbled toward the other chairs that were there for the choir and knocking a few over collapsed on the floor. Pastor Johnson received four stitches. Head wounds bleed a lot, so everyone was convinced he was in much worse condition then he was. One of the tiny finishing nails in the chair had lacerated his temple. Sister Treadaway suffered three broken ribs and had to have a pin in her shoulder. I'd tell you stories of abuse and bad behavior as well, but I've spent decades trying to forget...

American Conservatives attempt to bridge that gap, primarily by trying to redefine science. For example somehow the "Big Bang" is evolution. Their strength is in their conviction that their ignorance is better than centuries of meticulous work and deep study.
This certainly adds new meaning to the question, "would you like fries with that?"
