Bio

I grew up in London, UK as an only with a Deist raised Catholic and an Atheist father who was raised Protestant. I would like to make it clear that neither parent, to my knowledge at least asserted any of their religious viewpoints upon me and I didn't even come to understand these terms for their beliefs until later in life.

I attended a Church of England Primary school (Ages 5-11) for no other reason than that it was across the street in what was (and still is) a rough neighbourhood.

I stopped believing in the Christian God at the age of 9. Having watched my Grandfather, a Catholic who I considered to be a good man, die a slow and painful death to lung cancer over a period of 18 months. I remember thinking along the lines of a caring God would not have made him or his family suffer like that.

There were other factors. Spending a lot of time in the cancer ward of a hospital made me understand that he was far from the only one. Young/Old: It didn't matter.

Perhaps ironically, the charitable work that the school encouraged us to do was to go from door-to-door with a collection tin and to raise for Leprosy sufferers in Africa. Having been explained to in school what Leprosy did to a human being in addition to the aforementioned death of my grandfather affirmed to me that this god is a bastard and that I want nothing to do with him.

I went from there into my teens as what be loosely described as Deist. There is probably a better term for the following: "Sure. I believe in a god that created the universe, and I also believe that we're too insignificant for god to give a shit!".

Towards the end of my teens and probably related to when I began to read basic Astrophysics, I postulated if there was any need for a creator in the big picture. In short God = Universe. I later discovered that this was called pantheism. I was happy with this. Understanding god through scientific discovery and evaluating evidence seemed perfectly reasonable.

By my mid twenties I had concluded that I had no need to inject the concept of god into anything in my life. I was an Atheist and I was free. At time of writing, I'm 38. Whilst life has it's ups and downs, I have had no regrets about completely rejecting the notion of god in my life.

The Internet really took off in terms of content since the turn of the century. I can see how many Theists treat both Science and Atheism as dangerous, competing religions that need to be fought against as it contradicts their faith. Just so that everyone knows: I can and will poke fun at this whenever I see it.
