@RichCC My awareness of the roots of mathematics sometimes gets in the way of the way that I express myself. You are quite correct in your statement about irrational numbers, and it was something that caused the ancient Greeks much distress. The *reductio ad absurdum* argument is useful in showing that the square root of 2 cannot be a rational number, and it has nothing to do with the strawman argument, the latter being a misrepresentation of your debating opponent's position. I agree with your observations about irony.
