Anyone ever just get mentally fatigued and emotionally drained?
anglophone comments on May 1, 2020:
I have never been where you now are, so please treat anything I say with all due circumspection. It sounds as if physical proximity (e.g. your own neighbourhood) to somebody who is important to you might count more for you than social media proximity to somebody else who would otherwise have the same worth to you. From my own perspective, I have had fantastic emotional relationships with people who I have never been within 5,000 miles of. Perhaps I have an unusual approach. Have you ever thought of moving to elsewhere within the USA, or perhaps to another country? Would such an idea even appeal to you? Would it even be possible for you given your present circumstances (of which I am wholly ignorant)? As a very dear friend who is also physically close sometimes says to her own intimates "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.".
Review - Tom Holland "Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind" - History for Atheists

"The Internet is your friend". More seriously though, it seems William Wilberforce, having earlier become an evangelical Christian, was a driving force for the abolition of slavery. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/wilberforce_william.shtml for more details.

How would you feel if someone gave you unsolicited advice about your appearance?
anglophone comments on Apr 29, 2020:
Good grief! Your body is exclusively your own property, and it would never occur to me to volunteer an opinion about it. If I am asked by anybody about their own body, I will provide an opinion. It can also come up as an incidental in conversation. One particularly large breasted women and I were talking about body size and health related issues, when I asked "How do you avoid backache?". Her response was "By having a good posture.". In terms of her own body image, it was essentially a non-event.

She could at least have some respect for you and your view of reality. If she feels the need for self-comfort by maintaining her delusion, I would suggest that is her prerogative. As painful as it may be, perhaps the time has come to have "that conversation" with your other kids, that conversation being about the nature of life, the nature of death, and the nature of religion in a rational and informed population.

Is the concept of a personal God needed in some individuals?
anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
The evidence is clear: some people feel the need for a personal god. Other members have posted below their ideas for the reasons why. Speaking for myself, I find the concept of the God of the Bible to be absurd, and the idea that said god could be my personal god to be quite ludicrous.
I get so fed up with the bullshit.
anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
Their observations (accusations?) that I refuse to buy into their absurd make believe is just like water off a duck's back to me. I have a habit of trouncing all the fallacious arguments that they present.
Read a comment that said being "atheist" was claiming there is no god.
anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
It's a tired old and very absurd trope used by the God Mob. They misquote the burden of proof argument, which is correctly quoted as "The burden of proof rests with the one making the *existence* claim.". They also conveniently forget the fact that it is trivial to show that the God of the Bible cannot exist. The same goes for the God of the Torah.
Hey.
anglophone comments on Apr 28, 2020:
Do what works for you. You will be your own best guide when it comes to doing that. I bowl the following two questions at you, and I invite to ignore them or respond to them at a time and in a manner that pleases you: 1. How useful to you are the models of the natural world that are given to you by religion? 2. How useful to you are the models of the natural world that are given to you by the Scientific Method? (Hint: we would not have the Internet if the Scientific Method did not exist.)
Hi, I am new here and writing this post to say hello to the community.
anglophone comments on Apr 27, 2020:
Welcome to this community. I commend to you all nine comments below. For me, your wager is wasted. Moreover, it begs the question of "Which religion?", with the follow up question of "Which god or gods?". Something for you to ponder: nobody has ever demonstrated the existence of any god or gods in the last 5,000 years. As such, all such gods must be regarded as fictional, and all claims based on their (non-)existence must be regarded as absurd.

I think the definition of religion should be expanded.
anglophone comments on Apr 26, 2020:
I see it as a mistake to conflate the meanings of various lexical items that you mention. I disagree with your assertion that we all have certain basic spiritual needs. Religion does not satisfy any of my needs. I find it to be absurd. Racism does not in any way give me a sense of being valued because I am a member of a superior race. Moreover, I find the concept of a "superior race" to be utterly repellent.

anglophone comments on Apr 24, 2020:
I am picky. The reason that I am picky is that I do not wish to waste my time with delusionals as dates. I establish the other person's views on "the God question" before I would even contemplate going on a date with them. It does not matter to me how sexy they look, religion always gives me brewer's droop.

Sleep deprivation was a key factor in the loss of my faith.
