"Soul" is simply the idea that that which is aware in you/as you, has an enduring "life" beyond the physical world. While a nice, romantic idea, it's never been shown to be anything *other than* ...

What is concerning is less people are teaching the children experience and are relying on the educational system to teach experience.

This is very apparent if you get one of these pieces of furniture that are made over seas. Looking at the directions if you have not put this kind of thing together in the past, it is like using star charts to navigate city streets.

What is even a more bizarre feeling when you're going down the freeway and the sheriff calls your cell phone and ask you to pull over that they need to talk to you. You are at first how the F..k did they get your cell number. This happened to me in California.

@GipsyOfNewSpain I think when it happened to me in California it was before that law when hands free was urged but no T enforced. Would have been like 2011.

I think they're integral. A good manual can help you avoid pitfalls that inexperience may lead to. But to choose between a manual and a mentor, mentor wins hands down. A good mentor will be there to correct your errors maybe even before you make them.

@Hicks66 Had seen a first lieutenant do this he had made it from E1 up to O5 he would make all the Jr officers scramble.

Yes. Some of each. Read the books and then go try it. I learn by reading but remember better after having experienced it. Sometimes. I remember odd details I read as a kid. Important stuff not so well.
azzow2 replies on Sep 5, 2018:
Some people learn by oral instructions some can only learn by reading more people learn by hands on. I have to wonder if it is because the educational system relay heavier on one aspect more than the others.

When I had lived in Pennsylvania a couple of backwoods people I know had no education they could not read or write. They could teach you things that you would never come across in any book. There are always exceptions to every rule though.

I believe a healthy combination of both is best. Without experience, nothing in the book knowledge is really applicable, but the book knowledge allows one to examine experience in ways that may open new vistas not yet considered.

I think book knowledge is more important. I fashion every aspect of my life around a 2,000 year old book that tells me everything I need to know. Like, Earth was created 6,000 years ago, all people animals, plants etc. just randomly popped into existence, it's okay not just to own other human ...
