I think they're integral. A good manual can help you avoid pitfalls that inexperience may lead to. But to choose between a manual and a mentor, mentor wins hands down. A good mentor will be there to correct your errors maybe even before you make them.

I usually will give a genuine 'Hello' , and let them respond. Sometimes a conversation will make its way, sometimes it doesn't. But I will always at least say 'Hi'. I do the same when walking down the street to people coming the other way.
