Is not telling the whole truth, morally the same as lying ?

The con never stops being one just because it's very old. Some people will lie when the truth would be better. They lie because it benefits them.

@Deb57 well, you say "fiction," when it is maybe possible/likely that it is more like exaggerating to make a point? Or, i have also heard that under Roman rule the authors had to be more circumspect, and use terms that locals would get while Romans would not, hence "mule" for Vespasian (known as "the muleteer") and etc so, to a contemporary, "Jesus" (the most common male name then) "...of Nazareth" (which was unpopulated at the time) would have surely been heard completely differently by a local than we regard it now but also you might consider that a contemporary audience just would have read those differently, having a diff perspective; if i were to write "The Red Sox annihilated the Yankees yesterday" and you found out later no one actually died, was i "lying" to you? Conquest genre was the norm then i guess, OT, and ppl understood how to read it; iow making statements like "this is fiction" would have been pointless at the time, just like if you added that to the sportsing thing there above maybe

But since i'm here i will say that your beliefs do not condemn you, according to the Bible; if you say "there is no fucking god" but then go on to do selfless things, help orphans and whatever, that is how you will be judged i guess

for a gnostic anyway, sure, but note the convenient phrasing, "...doesn't believe in dragons," rather than the more truthful and succinct "believes there are no dragons" (thus removing the "believing *in*" concept entirely, as well) since atheists are def believers, only in diff things, at least generally speaking? i notice atheists avoiding this like the plague, but obv in order to even say "i dont believe *in* ________," one must have some contrary "belief," right

There are roughly 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars out there, with who knows how many planets orbiting them. It's much more likely that a dragon-like creature exists on one of those planets than it is that God and his son Jesus exist as they are depicted in the Bible.
bbyrd009 replies on Apr 10, 2021:
well wadr Yah does not claim to "exist" in the Bible, not anywhere, as addressed in the "I AM" passages. "Wind" was used as a metaphor at the time, which we now know what the wind is made of, and what causes it, but you can still extrapolate if you want to get the point and fwiw Jesus (Joshua) was the most common male name then, and Nazareth was not even inhabited 1st century AD, which might make a quite good argument for "Jesus of Nazareth" being a great rabbi-speak way of saying "John Doe, from Nowhere"

But a secret i am learning is that if you just (sort of) *agree* with a contender, a la "then it is maybe best if you believe that, for now, nothing wrong with that; at least until you incorporate _______" and similar language, you are at least more likely to...shut them up? lol

There are no explanations. We have hypotheses that are supported by facts to varying degrees. Claims of a god or a creator aren't even hypotheses because they explain nothing and are unfalsifiable. These claims seek to end inquiry, and not to increase understanding.
bbyrd009 replies on Apr 8, 2021:
@racocn8 "The proof that Humans evolved from lower forms invalidates the Genesis story" ah, you think so? How? "Showing Original Sin has no basis similarly invalidates the dogma of a Christ-Savior being needed to atone for that Original Sin." well, *No son of man may die for another's sins* is pretty clear i guess, yeh once you get it anyway "religion poisons *everything*"

well, or so you currently believe anyway, sure imo i would understand that the opposite must also then be true; "Claims of no god or creator aren't even hypotheses because they explain nothing and are unfalsifiable." gave you a like for part one tho :)

@Diogenes "All a person has to do about any religion is to ask a few basic questions. "Noah and his arc"! It raind for 40 days and nights; what did the lions eat?" well i guess that *would* be a "religious" question, yeh; i can't see how it would get anyone any closer to the truth though. "Noah" is a girl anyway! So wadr there is a valid mythology in Noach that we are not even approaching i guess "This week there were about 13 people with signs protesting the serum. I still don't know whether there wasnt enough, or whether they didn't want to take it. One of them asked me if I was Catholic. Why? Don't know! I explained, I had no interest in any religion- I was agnostic. Her words, "sign of the beast". I love meeting comedians--- even if they are crazy!" hmm, asked you if you were catholic, apropos of what (action or declaration)? ty but the comparo of "immunizations" to fascism has already been aired i guess, although i'm not sure of the context for her saying "sign of the beast" either; the serum itself, or the lack of it?
