70 year old retired guy. Happily married. Financially secure. Reasonable health. Active 'adventure' traveler. I enjoy the Caribbean, South America, New Zealand, Australia, Micronesia and the National Parks of the USA. We enjoy gardening in the spring and summer here in Ohio. We raise a vegetable garden, lots of strawberries and asparagus. And a large Hummingbird/butterfly habitat. I'm a conservative guy politically, lifestyle wise, and believe in 'live and let live'. You're not going to change my opinions on stuff. And I'm not going to try to change yours. I'm here for interesting discussions on numerous topics....

The Europeans & South Americans, at least those I've worked with, think our Puritanical attitude concerning our leaders is laughable. bigpawbullets comments on Mar 6, 2019:
It occurs to me that your examples are, excluding the pro sports folk, all "government" jobs in my state. That is, all funded through, basically, property taxes. Probably suplemented by some federal matching funds for specific sub-programs. So, we don't see striking teachers. Police, or firefighters very often. All salaries are public record so public knowledge, as are our tax rates. So, it's difficult for those unions to successfully argue being underpaid. And those unions do provide benefit to the union members as well as the population their members serve. I believe the UAW and other large unions dealing with large corporations suffered, at least in Dayton, from "Union Greed". The mirror of "Corporate Greed". So it was actually "Greed" that crushed the economy here in the rust belt.

bigpawbullets comments on Mar 4, 2019:

bigpawbullets comments on Mar 4, 2019:
In the early 60s, National Cash Register (NCR) was a booming business in Dayton, Ohio. As was the General Motors truck plant, and the Delphi auto parts company. All union shops. All running two, sometimes three shifts. The UAW, and other unions started to demand more and more for their members. Hourly wages increased rapidly, benefits increased exponentially, life was good! But the business model was not sustainable. GM products became too expensive for anyone but GM employees. NCR couldn't compete with imports from Europe, much less Japan. Layoffs led to a disgruntled workforce, who then started to turn out inferior products leading to more loss of business. A death spiral. The Unions refused to take pay cuts or reductions in benefits. Striking constantly. The scenario I've described resulted in three major employers simply shutting down and moving out of the state. That's what unions did to Dayton.
