69 year old retired guy. Happily married. Financially secure. Reasonable health. Active 'adventure' traveler. I enjoy the Caribbean, South America, New Zealand, Australia, and the National Parks of the USA. We enjoy gardening in the spring and summer here in Ohio. We raise a vegetable garden, lots of strawberries and asparagus. And a large Hummingbird/butterfly habitat. I'm a conservative guy politically, lifestyle wise, and believe in 'live and let live'. You're not going to change my opinions on stuff. And I'm not going to try to change yours. I'm here for interesting discussions on numerous topics....

There was supposedly, a deterrent to this kind of event. But, the resolve to act wasn't there. In other societies, that "guard" would have been expected to commit seppuku.

bigpawbullets comments on Feb 11, 2019:
I attended a meeting in Dayton last week at the Masonic Lodge. A huge, impressive building adjacent to the Dayton Art Institute. The room our meeting was held in was fairly small as rooms go in that place. Along the top of the wall opposite the doors were symbols made of what appeared to be brass, cut into the stone. Among the numerous designs was a swastika, a pentagram, and the six pointed Star of David. I casually committed to a guy I was there with about this odd mixture. He laughed and told me those symbols were far older than any of the groups we now associate them with. My, opinion is that there's nothing inherently evil about any symbol. It's the power we give it at a time in history. The hate is in the human psyche. I'd think one of the first steps in dealing with the problem would be to remove the symbol's ability to manifest fear.

bigpawbullets comments on Feb 9, 2019:
So, as an “Old White Male”, I’m going to step out of my comfort zone here. I like young AOC. I personally think she is trying to do what I voted Trump in to do. That is, stir things up. Break the control of the Establishment. She is young (What? Maybe 24??), driven, passionate, and not brought up in a rich, political family. While I don’t agree with everything either of these folks are doing, I’m glad they are both in the fight. Now! Our @cutiebeauty has proposed a definition of Democratic Socialism. I kind of like it, with reservations. But how many of the so called “Socialists” running for office (AKA Bernie Sanders clones) have that same definition? As an old Cold War warrior, I’ve been involved in several attempts to overthrow a Communist regime. None succeeded. So, as an old and retired Director of Strategic Planning with experience as a company grade officer in the Legions of the Empire; What would you all see as your Disaster Recovery Plan if Socialism fails in the USA? A good quote I’ve seen in several places lately: “You can vote Socialism in, but you’ll have to shoot your way out of it.” Are you younger folks prepared for that? Let’s listen to some appropriate music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEt41bYQBgE=1=RDYEt41bYQBgE

bigpawbullets comments on Feb 9, 2019:
I'm sure everyone, (maybe) has heard of "scope creep" or "project creep". Simply stated, it means the scope of the effort grows without constraints in place. Very common in many things. What I personally am uncomfortable with is, I've heard of or seen nothing about how to constrain or limit the reach of socialism into my life. I'm stating "me" and "my" here as I don't want anyone to think I'm speaking for a group. I believe "socialism creep", if you will, grows into Communism. I recognize we are in reality a somewhat Socialist state already. (Social security, welfare, public infrastructure being the usual examples). Do we really need more government in our lives? Let's say we do vote in a Socialist leaning majority in our political system. Will they be less prone to corruption than the current crowd? What methods or processes would you suggest to limit their ability to control every aspect of my life? Or, is that what you are advocating?

All very interesting responses to a good post. I saw in one response the word "qualified" used in relation to "free" college. Depending on how you feel about that, it makes great sense, or, it's the antithesis of "equality". To me, since I believe that "nothing is free", I'd say that I'm more than willing to chip in and subsidize a college education for someone who stands a very good chance of graduating with a useful-to-society skill. But how you'd determine that success probability and then, define what is useful, is not something I'd care to attempt.
