What do you identify with? I’m a moderate looking to find moderate friends and/or dates.

Which horror movie character/monster would you hate to face in real life?

Do you think you are selfish or selfless? And why?
birdingnut comments on Jul 26, 2018:
Selfish. Our only purpose in this life is to be happy, so if helping others makes someone happy, then do that, and if photographing birds in swamps makes someone happy, also do that. No rigid rules and "shouldn't" shaming.
When you believe and hold all that is true and shun all that is false. What's the prize?
birdingnut comments on Jul 26, 2018:
Sounds like a much better plan..after all, being happy is our only purpose in life. By the way, this website has a bit of a learning curve. For members who are open to dating, you will see that certain thumbnails and profiles have a heart symbol on them with a percentage. This identifies which members are open to dating, and the percent shows approximately how compatible you are with them. If you click the heart symbol on the top of their profile, you can see how it is determined. You can improve your score in general by answering all the profile questions and writing a bio, which also earns you website points. Commenting on posts and writing your own earns more points. At level two you can private message people, and at level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt. The website uses profile algorithms to find member matches, so the more details one includes, the better the match. Many people prefer to see a written profile talking about interests, hobbies, and backgrounds that can be quickly perused to find compatible partners. In case you didn't know yet, to find members near you, click on the "Browse" button at the top of the page, then on "Members," and enter your preferred search parameters. Click on the "Discuss" button, then "Nearby" to find members near you also. Or click on the "About" button at the top left of the page to find links to FAQ or the website tutorial. Points are now being given to level 3+ members who chat. You can see chat rooms on the group main page or at https://agnostic.com/groups/rooms.
SO frustrated.
birdingnut comments on Jul 26, 2018:
I think after age 18 we should stop lecturing and passing out advice and just let our children live their own lives, and only participate when invited to do so. If we act needy and clingy with them it only makes them more desperate to move far away. It's best we stay happy and busy with our own lives, work, friends, etc. They'll let us know if they miss us.

Does anyone believe they have a seen a ufo and if so share your story of that experience.
birdingnut comments on Jul 26, 2018:
UFO sighting are routinely deleted from the internet and ridiculed by the US government, in their desperation to keep it all secret. But other countries don't care so much. For this reason many Americans are brain-washed into treating the subject as a joke. I've seen 100s of UFOs in the 1960s-70s, usually with more than one witness-sometimes with crowds of people. We saw them up close, further away, following my car, etc. both in Haiti, where I grew up with American missionary parents, and in the US. All the ones I saw were various sizes of saucer shapes with lights that ran around the rim, changing like the colors of courting squid, sometimes glowing bright like a sun, then going dark, then changing colors again. They were all silent and the one that followed my car acted like a curious puppy, frisking around our car, making sorties to shine a floodlight around neighborhoods we were passing in the night, then returning to us again. It followed my husband and I for 300 miles, once hovering over so close it made our car stall. One of them abducted my ex's college roommate for several hours in 1968, traumatizing him into having to have therapy. There was a long gap where I didn't see any, until 2005 when one about the size of small house flew in low orbit over my Kentucky farm when I was out in the yard star gazing with a date. That craft was seemed to be of human origin though, with yellow framed oval portholes on each side of the slowly tumbling vehicle. It was lit on the inside.

For those divorced and dating again...
birdingnut comments on Jul 26, 2018:
It's been eight years since my divorce and I enjoy being single so much I now wonder how I ever was able to tolerate being in a relationship at all. I toy with the idea of finding a ballroom dance and hiking partner when I move to Lexington, Kentucky, but I'm not even sure what gender to date. I've never met a woman who likes to do what I do, so probably it would have to be a man. Or some other gender variation. But if I go the LGBTQ way I'd be setting myself up as target for religious wing nuts to attack, potentially putting my life at risk.

Sure..in the US, and only if you're cis hetero. Gay or non-gender conforming couples expressing PDA in the US are inviting attack, perhaps even death by religious wing nuts. PDA between couples is frowned on here in Thailand. The only people I see holding hands and cuddling in public are women friends and relatives, except possibly in highly westernized urban areas, but I've not seen any mixed couples doing it, myself. Same for Haiti, where I grew up (with American parents).

Studies suggest psilocybin acts as a "lubricant for the mind" that allows people to escape a cycle of depressive symptoms One study gave 19 patients a single dose of the psychedelic ingredient psilocybin. Half the patients ceased to be depressed and experienced changes in their brain activity that lasted about five weeks The team at Imperial performed fMRI brain scans before treatment with psilocybin and then the day after (when the patients were "sober" again). The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed psilocybin affected two key areas of the brain. The amygdala - which is heavily involved in how we process emotions such as fear and anxiety - became less active. The greater the reduction, the greater the improvement in reported symptoms. The default-mode network - a collaboration of different brain regions - became more stable after taking psilocybin. Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial, said the depressed brain was being "clammed up" and the psychedelic experience "reset" it. Hi, Cecilia, and welcome to the website! But Roddenberry said of Christianity, "How can I take seriously a God-image that requires that I prostrate myself every seven days and praise it? That sounds to me like a very insecure personality." He also made it known to the writers of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation that religion, superstition, and mystical thinking were not to be included. He even censured the writers when there was a mention of marriage in a script for an early episode of The Next Generation. However he was an agnostic and was interested other people's experiences with religion. But, he "felt very strongly that contemporary Earth religions would be gone by the 23rd century."

Advice for a teacher who is teaching ESL high school students who speak Spanish.
birdingnut comments on Jul 24, 2018:
Google translate, and pictures on a poster with a circle slash should clarify the rules. Also you might try practicing speaking Spanish at home. When I first started teaching ESL here in Thailand in 2010 I didn't know any Thai, but I bought a small Thai/English dictionary/phrase book and acquired a Thai friend to teach me in exchange for English lessons. Luckily, Spanish is MUCH easier to learn than Thai, which is a tonal language with a totally different alphabet and way of writing. For instance, this is how you write "Good morning students" in Thai; สวัสดีตอนเช้านักเรียน.There is no punctuation or capitalization and words can be written in circles or backwards with the middle part written first, depending on the letters. Knowing this showed me how to explain English to the students. My teaching quickly improved with my Thai language skills...learning the native language of the students can clarify difficulties they will encounter learning English, but with Spanish, I doubt there will be much confusion.
Ladies high heels or flip-flops?
birdingnut comments on Jul 24, 2018:
It baffles me why women would willingly put torture shoes on their feet just to look better for MEN. I also think flip flops can be dangerous and the middle gripping part soon rubs skin between my toes raw. Originally, high-heeled shoes were to make short English noblemen seem taller, then later, tall platform shoes kept rich people out of the sewage flowing in the London streets. Why modern women choose to wear them is beyond me, but they deserve whatever pain they suffer for refusing to think for themselves, catering to MEN.

If you answer the profile questions and write your profile, listing your hobbies and interests, you'll earn website points, and members can get to know you. Commenting on posts and writing your own earns more points. At level two you can private message people, and at level eight you get an agnostic T-shirt. The website uses profile algorithms to find member matches, so the more details one includes, the better the match. Many women prefer to see a written profile talking about interests, hobbies, and backgrounds that can be quickly perused to find compatible partners.

Dating a Theist
birdingnut comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Gracious no, LOL! But if you are asking us, most likely you've already made up your mind to try, so good luck with that.
All I come across on dating sites are Christians! F@K!!!! I want to date someone who doesn't believe...

There a number of such women here. Have you asked any of them out?
Be aware of the signs: emotional abuse.
birdingnut comments on Jul 22, 2018:
Wow. With this definition, both my parents and all my siblings were abusive to me most of my life. And my ex. And my son, when he grew big enough to do what he wanted. My parents passed away, and lately I've been cutting all Trump supporters out of my life. Then I found out that three of my college-educated, much traveled, high IQ, professional career siblings are Trumpites. When I let them know, and dumped them from my social network, I felt SUCH a sense of relief and joy, I was shocked. I realized I'd been obediently obeying the religious "love and forgive" trope and allowing these toxic humans to stay in my life, biting my tongue, trying to "get along" to be a "good Christian." NEVER AGAIN.
How many of you dye your hair?
birdingnut comments on Jul 21, 2018:
Wearing natural gray hair is a current fashion trend, I've read. Some models are even dying their hair gray. I'll keep dying my hair until so many people are doing it that nobody will discriminate against me if I allow mine to go gray.
How religious family members "support" you.

I used to be puzzled that everything I "prayed" for happened. But it happened even if I didn't pray, just wished it. I also noticed that the answers had nothing to do with it being good for me or not..it happened exactly as I envisioned, for good or bad. So, we are our own gods. You can pray to Jesus, god or whoever but it doesn't matter..it's all YOU. So now I go ahead use my habitual religious habits to "pray" such as praying "in Jesus" name" and it happens. It also happens if I don't pray at all. You could pray in your dog's name..doesn't matter. As physics teaches, we are co-creators of our own universe..making our own reality. What you believe, or fear, comes to you, since your focus on it makes it manifest, for good or for bad. “Consciousness is fundamental and matter is derived from consciousness." – Max Planck, theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics

I only read for pleasure, not to do debates or for intellectual pursuits. I go through several books a week so am constantly rereading my Kindle library. I love Robert A. Heinlein, John Scalzi, Jeannette Walls, Misha Burnett, Margaret Mitchell, James Herriot, J.K. Rowlings, C.S. Lewis (but only his secular novels-especially "Till We Have Faces"), Mary Renault, Maya Angelou, etc. but sometimes I can't find anything I haven't recently reread. In desperation, yesterday I bought the inexpensive Kindle "The Covenant: A Novel," by James A. Michener, since it's long enough to last more than a few days (hopefully).
In my professional life, I dealt with many political figures, governmental agency upper staff, and ...
