LOL! My dad was useful helping me fix my car, discussing electronics and politics, telling stories about old sci-fi plots he'd read, but not terribly handy at giving me life advice. I was surprised at how much wiser my mom grew each year, even though most of what she taught me to prepare for adulthood was sadly outdated by the time I grew up..how to fold and safely pin a cloth diaper, how to kill, pluck, and cook a chicken (turned me into a vegetarian), how to be the obedient wife (never refuse sex, and always forgive and forget..a formula to encourage abuse, which it did.), and taught me Bible stories..which I no longer believe in.

Well, the Christians point out that man was made in god's image. I lean more toward Lloyd Pye's ideas in "Intervention Theory of Origins-of the Universe, of Life, of Hominoids, and of Humans" (Everything You Know Is Wrong Essentials), that.this planet was seeded and terraformed by more advanced races. Our own DNA made sudden and impossible leaps, indicating genetic engineering, as the Sumerian texts, written 2000 years before the Bible was, claims.

Fake healers.
birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
(Sigh) People involved in healings don't go to hospitals to pray for the sick because it's the people themselves who heal themselves. Benny Hinn even says that in his meetings, where people really are healed, including the blind son of a lady I knew from church. When I was in Haiti, Haitians used to read their translated New Testaments, believe it easily because of their experiences with the supernatural in voodoo, then pray for people who were dying or even already dead for days, and heal them. The white missionaries didn't really believe the Bible, being educated to be "rational" and always went to doctors and took medicine, but the Haitians couldn't afford it. Benny HInn always tells people at the rallies that it's their faith that heals them, as Jesus himself said, according to the Bible. Anyone can do it, and has nothing to do with "god" unless it's in the true sense that we are ourselves god, and creating our own universes. We are making our own reality. What you believe, or fear, comes to you, since your focus on it brings it to you. “Consciousness is fundamental and matter is derived from consciousness." – Max Planck, theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics As usual, if anyone trolls me for this comment, I'll just block you.

birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
It seems to work, that's for sure. I had some weird phobias all my life, such as an irrational fear of being killed if I looked at my bank account. I decided to imagine I could see the past life where the problem first started, and went into meditation mode while riding in a speeding songtheaw (converted pickup truck bus) over the bridge to Ko Yo Island, Songkhla, going to work. I pretended to be able to see that reincarnation, and in my mind I saw me, and my Jewish family-my father, grandfather and older brother hiding in the basement of a farm in Bulgaria just prior to WW ll. We were supposed to go to the river at a certain time where a boat would meet us with other Jewish refugees fleeing the country. I was a 19-year-old boy, and had been working a job as a clerk in the nearby town so I decided to withdraw my savings before I left, so I risked a trip to town. One of the bank customers saw me and must have reported me to Nazi sympathizers, because my entire family was gunned down and killed on the way to the river that night. When I "woke up" from remembering this I felt disoriented, because while living in the scene it was as though I'd been born in Bulgaria, and had the mindset of that era. So I googled the incident and found that even if we'd reached the boat, it didn't matter..the entire boatload of Jews was gunned down when they arrived at the sea harbor. Our government had secretly sold us out to the Nazis. But, I was now free of the irrational fear of checking on my bank account, so I tried it again with other phobias I'd not been able to shake my entire life. I hadn't really believed what I saw was real, but apparently it doesn't matter, for it to work. Another issue was seeming to hear a baby crying in the back of my mind all my life, if I got quiet enough. I assumed it was because my mom didn't believe in picking up or touching babies, but when I pretended to return to the past life where the problem started, I saw my current sister, (who was, in that reincarnation timeline, my 14-year old Seneca Indian mother), a captive in a raiding band of young Creek warriors that had burned our village. She gave birth to me on the trail, but the band leader (my current son in this timeline, but a warrior in that reincarnation. I learned that most people reincarnate in groups, and know each other, playing different roles each time) forced her to abandon me in a little rock hollow by the side of the trail. The crying I heard was me, the baby, who was left to die. So I corrected what had happened by imagining my mom returning, picking me up, nursing me and taking care of me in safety. After that, I never heard the crying again. I visited a number of past lives to clean up various problems I'd been having, and the relief ...

What's the one thing that should be taught in high school that isn't?
birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
All schools should be self-directed. Students allowed to work at their own rate and pursue passions and interests can zip through a grade every two weeks. Thus students who want to go into science and research can quickly move on to university level classes, while students who prefer working with their hands, can learn machining, where they earn high salaries while learning, then get paid high salaries, as these jobs are currently begging for workers. No more forcing everyone into the college track, to go into debt, and then work for a low salary. No doubt the reason public schools force students to work in lockstep, holding everyone back and boring them with busy work to wait for the slowest students, is to keep students warehoused and tax money flowing.
Come and get your love.

Why are so many of the non-religious so militant about it?
birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
I'm no longer willing to keep religious and pro-Trump friends on Facebook, once they start posting offensive memes. I usually message them and tell them why, to give them a chance to change if they want. Only one person, so far, has backed down and reformed, and she's not religious. My current policy is that when I'm trolled either on Facebook or this website, I block them. Yep, plenty of Trump-lovers here as well, although not as many as in the general population. birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
Just finished the first book of the "Old Man's War" series, by John Scalzi. He's as good as Robert A. Heinlein, if not better. I reread my favorite book series on Kindle every 8 months or so, including this one. I'm concurrently reading, and just completing (again) "Bumbling into Body Hair," a hilarious autobiography of a lesbian to male's journey into manhood. What's so weird is that the moment she committed to transitioning and taking testosterone, she got a work promotion, was recruited to a government job for three times her current salary, and got a beautiful girlfriend, who she married. Because she was perceived as a normal married man, her comment was "Wow..white (cis hetero) male privilege is TRUE.."

birdingnut comments on May 24, 2018:
There's no need to throw a bare breast onto the table to nurse a baby-I always nursed in public by simply tossing a light receiving blanket over one shoulder and nursing my new babies underneath it. Nobody ever noticed..even in church! I wore front button shirts, but I could even surreptitiously raise the bottom edge of a loose sweatshirt to do so, as long as something draped over me. I even used to nurse my kids while riding my Arabian horse on mountain Colorado trails.

Power's out.
birdingnut comments on May 23, 2018:
When I lived in Nakhon, Thailand, for three years, the power frequently went out without warning, sometimes for over two hours. When that happened, it didn't take long for my unventilated apartment to become intolerable, so I'd grab my Chinese tablet and use the screen as a flashlight. Then I'd drag my folding hammock frame and hammock out onto the rooftop veranda, to join the other (Thai) tenants who were trying to get cool. I'd kick back in the comfy hammock and read Kindle books happily until I saw the light flick on again in the city.

Sounds interesting. I certainly do read a lot, but only Kindle books these days. I'm starting the Old Man's War series again, after waiting about eight months since I last read it, although I'm concurrently reading Bumbling into Body Hair, a hilarious autobiography of a female to male. I usually read several books at a time, depending on my mood, and cycle through my favorite book series constantly, while always adding new books when relatives give me Amazon gift cards for birthdays. Good thing, since I currently live in Thailand, and there are few English language books around, if I were to actually want to read one. But even before I moved here in 2010, I started switching to Kindle to avoid puffing dust into my eyes every time I turned a page, and having an entire library of books handy during a trip, without book storage and luggage weight problems.

Maybe, but it made little difference in my relationships, which were always cuddly and honest, but never lasted. A famous study found that the one common denominator in successful, long-term hetero marriages was when the husband listened to and yielded to his wife in all things. "In John Gottman’s long-term study of 130 newlywed couples, he found that even in the first few months of marriage, men who allow their wives to influence them have happier marriages and are less likely to divorce than men who resist their wives’ influence. Statistically speaking, when a man is not willing to share power with his partner, there is an 81 percent chance that his marriage will self-destruct." Gottman, John M., and Nan Silver. (1999). “Principle 4: Let Your Partner Influence You,” in The Seven Principles for Making Marriages Work (Chapter Six). My own partners were typically men with high levels of female characteristics, including being picky, critical, and independent. Asexuality
birdingnut comments on May 22, 2018:
If you write your profile and answer the profile questions, you'll both earn points and let members get to know you better, and what you're looking for in a partner. Besides, that's the first place many people look when they see a new member.
Asexuality
birdingnut comments on May 22, 2018:
There are asexual dating forums, and I used to be part of one. But, as it turns out, sexual drive seems to be the motivating factor for people to pursue relationships, as it takes a lot of nerve and energy. Both forums I joined had very little dating going on, if any, and conversation threads would often take a year to complete, there was so little activity. I'm demisexual, so it takes over a year before I feel sexual attraction to a love interest, but once it kicks in, my libido is so high, with gender-bending and mild S&M tendencies, that cis hetero men can't handle it and their 20-second love-making is boring to me.

Choosing partner is directly or indirectly related with racism.
birdingnut comments on May 22, 2018:
I am picky in partners in more ways than race. He would have to be the same race, citizenship, education, similar social status, like doing similar things, have traveled, be fit, and be within two years of my age. I wouldn't date him if he: played golf, loved to eat junk food and red meat, liked to fish and hunt, follows NASCAR, is an American football fanatic, a gamer, addicted to his smart phone/or porn, seldom reads.
I'm annoyed by the impact that the evangelists have on our elections.

Anybody heard XTC's Dear God?
birdingnut comments on May 22, 2018:
LOVE IT!! Lyrics: Dear God XTC Dear God, hope you get the letter and I pray you can make it better down here I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer But all the people that you made in your image See them starving on their feet 'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God I can't believe in you Dear God, sorry to disturb you but I feel that I should be heard loud and clear We all need a big reduction in amount of tears And all the people that you made in your image See them fighting in the street 'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God I can't believe in you Did you make disease and the diamond blue? Did you make mankind after we made you? And the Devil too! Dear God don't know if you noticed but Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look And all the people that you made in your image Still believing that junk is true Well I know it ain't, and so do you Dear God I can't believe in I don't believe I won't believe in heaven or hell No saints, no sinners, no devil as well No pearly gates, no thorny crown You're always letting us humans down The wars you bring, the babes you drown Those lost at sea and never found And it's the same the whole world 'round The hurt I see helps to compound The Father, Son and Holy Ghost Is just somebody's unholy hoax And if you're up there you'll perceive That my heart's here upon my sleeve If there's one thing I don't believe in It's you Dear God
Funeral Rites
birdingnut comments on May 22, 2018:
Cremation, then ashes fed to a tree, to contribute to the earth, which is my mother. As for any friends or family who might miss me, I recommend a party, with DJ and dance floor. Wait...I'm the only one of my relatives and old family friends who loves to dance. Well, a party with great food, anyway.
And so it begins..... Anyone recognize that gaping yellow mouth?

OK babyboomers, how many of you are like me and thinks todays chart topping music really sucks ...
birdingnut comments on May 21, 2018:
Most older geezers like us think that about our own high school and college day music...it's almost a cliche. But, although I love music from my youth, I also like current popular US music, ethnic music, pop music from around the world, classic, jazz, bluegrass, 1930s-40s music, etc. Maybe it's because I have streaming music in any genre I wish on accuradio.com, and usually have it playing when I'm online.
Any atheists that have “come out” to a very religious family?
birdingnut comments on May 21, 2018:
I often mention being agnostic on my Facebook page, but so far nobody has commented. I'd already defriended any of my childhood Haiti MK (missionary kid) friends who posted racist, homophobic, pro-NRA, or pro-Trump posts on Facebook, after first warning them, then giving them dressings down in private messages for being blatant white supremacist hypocrites. When I came out as partial transmale, and nonbinary, I simply sent a brief, casual, group email to my immediate family, explaining what I am, and what the terms mean. I'd only recently realized what I am a few months earlier.

In 2010, my ex helped me pack up my farm house and drove me to the airport, then continued finding homes for our rescue dogs and racking mule, stored my stuff for me, despite my asking him to take it to Goodwill. We hugged and said good-bye at the airport gate. I was leaving for a good reason (his extreme jealousy and losing our money online playing the forex while I was asleep), so I was ready to go.

African Greys are highly intelligent, and can have conversations with humans, knowing what they are saying, although this one was obviously trained to perform this routine for treats. I once bought a breeding pair of wild-caught African Greys, but they could mimic reality so well we quickly felt like we were under siege. The day after we bought them, we heard the school bus arrive, heard the hiss of the air brakes, heard the neighbor kids shouting and yelling, heard the sounds of scurrying footsteps, the echo of feet running on our wooden deck (my kids were home schooled), then the banging of someone on the metal door. Our toy fox terrier ran barking to the door, as well as my eight-year-old son, but to our shock, nobody was there. Our faces went white. My son stared at me, but I didn't know what to think. Soon we heard the squeal of power tools starting up on the deck, but my husband was no longer outside working on the new cage for the parrots, but had already gone back to work. I thought maybe we were all going losing it..even the dog. I wondered if I should call for an exorcist. Then I remembered an article I'd read in my Parrot World magazine where a woman complained that her African Grey kept scaring her in the middle of the night with the sounds of someone breaking into the house and ransacking it. It soon got worse..we'd hear the kids yelling our names in the middle of the night, then hear them running past us down the hall, when they were asleep. I'd be down at the mailbox by the road, and hear my husband's car drive past me within a few feet, crunching the gravel, and up the driveway, park, hear him get out and slam the door, walk across the deck, and call out to me at the door. It seemed so real I almost hallucinated that I could see it. We'd hear entire conversations repeated back to us in the middle of the night..including one where we clearly heard my son and his friend yucking it up and smoking out by the cellar, discussing the cigarettes, how to keep out of sight from mom, etc. We eventually couldn't take it anymore and I sold them.

Soon nobody will use fuel injection gasoline engines in cars anymore..very polluting and inefficient. Even the 1968 Jaguar Harry and Meghan drove away in after the wedding has been converted to e-power. Not only does the Jaguar have zero emissions, it is nearly silent, and its 220kW engine can can jump the car to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. You could ask her, "You want me to stop the Devil from stealing your soul?" It was once believed that the soul separated from the body when you sneezed, so the blessing was added to stop the Devil from grabbing it.

Before being fully aware I'm agnostic, I sort of liked some of Christian music you mentioned, but I was uneasily aware that even singers I admired were proselytizing, which made the music seem fake. Especially when popular Christian singers went secular, and I realized it was just a gateway to fame for them. Amy Grant comes to mind.
