Right now I'm enamored with a new (for fun!) indie author, Misha Burnett. He's never written a novel before, and comes from a blue collar, jack of all trades background, the knowledge of which he delightfully works into his 4-novel Catskinner series. In his book series' universe, many humans are allowing themselves to be manipulated and misled by alien energies that are posing as religious spirits, dead relatives, etc. but are from other dimensions/worlds. The alien energies offer advanced technical knowledge, and sometimes super powers, in exchange for human cooperation. The protagonist is a slender, ordinary man, but has been attached since babyhood, by his parents, to an alien entity that loves to kill, and can make the protagonist supernaturally strong and fast, as needed. But whenever he does so, his calories are quickly depleted and he needs more food, so during the novels, the protagonist is always gorging on fast food. He's been working as a hired hit man, which makes him money, but all he wants is a normal life, with the ability to have a girlfriend. When he finally gets one, he soon realizes that she's been altered as well. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008MPNBNS/ref=series_rw_dp_sw
Is this true for you?
birdingnut comments on Feb 4, 2018:
I agree. Many LGBTQ couples have open relationships because of being bisexual, and feeling attraction for both genders. From what I've read, "swinger" couples can improve their relationships, if they follow ground rules. For example, if the relationship seems stale and either of the couple are feeling restless, allowing threesomes, and/or seeing other people could prevent divorce. I was shocked when I was first married to my ex..out of nowhere, after having only had vanilla relationships with past "rabbit sex" straight male partners, I suddenly became this playful dominatrix, with whips, handcuffs, ropes, fantasy play, uninhibited frolicking. I was even more shocked when he loved it, begged for more, and would take turns swapping gender and domineering roles. For the first time in my life, I found out what sex was for. With cis straight men, sex = getting to their own orgasm as fast as possible, then trying clumsily to make me orgasm also, forcing me to "fake it" to make them stop. It was boring and annoying. But now I knew what sex was for..pleasure! Creative play and fun, spinning it out as long as possible..no more "rabbit sex." As it turned out, we were both LGBTQ, since he came out as a bi nonbinary female last year, and I realized four years ago that I'm androgyne (mixed gender traits) and a partial transmale. My new theory is that couples with mixed gender traits = the most interesting love lives.

A congressman was stumping in a state with a lot of Native Americans, so he went out to the reservation to make a speech. "If I'm elected I'll bring prosperity to your tribe!" All the people cheered "Hoya! Hoya!" Encouraged, the Congressman went on, "I will always make sure you have justice in the courts!" More cheers. After the speech, the congressman, feeling happy about his reception, asked if he could look at some of the tribal cattle in a nearby field. One of the Indians said, "Sure, but be careful not to step in any hoya!"

birdingnut comments on Feb 4, 2018:
I've noticed that androgyne dating forums are not active. Members don't seem interested in dating, and seem perfectly content pursuing their various obsessions. My theory..our equally strong gender sides cancel each other out, and we feel content with ourselves. I also noticed that when I'm in long-term relationships, I tend to grow increasingly claustrophobic as I continue to accommodate the other person. After a break up, I usually felt a sense of relief..at last I could go dancing, travel, do things the ex didn't want to do. But the next person, who did like to do those things, would usually have their own limitations..maybe they didn't like to ski, or liked to play the forex, and constantly lost money, etc. So, my problem is that I like my freedom. But at the same time, I would love a companion with whom to snuggle, read together, go dancing with, etc. So, like many androgyne types, I am contented living alone, but still like to do things with like-minded people.

Marriage... Are there any divorcees out there who actively hope to get married again?
birdingnut comments on Feb 3, 2018:
HAHAHAHAHA! I LOVE it! And so true. Hetero, cis men usually want to lock down relationships, though, to keep their lovers exclusive to them. That was annoying when I was dating..I could only have fun dancing, hiking, and going exciting places for about eight months before they were pressuring me for a commitment, even when I began using the tactic of having sex with them after about six months, to prevent them from wanting more from the relationship. It was so annoying. Sooner or later, they'd tell me to fish or cut bait. None of my disclaimers made any difference. I came to realize that they felt demeaned and insulted for my only using them for fun and sex. You'd think it would be the opposite. I did like to attend weddings if it included a wooden dance floor and D.J...free dancing! Yeah! My ex and I were advanced ballroom/jitterbug dancers and loved to cut the rug. I also loved any excuse to design and make a new ballroom gown, like this one, when we danced on the beach at Sand Key Island, FL

Do you believe in love at first sight?
birdingnut comments on Feb 3, 2018:
Apparently, males are capable of "love at first sight," if the female doesn't blow it by acting too needy and aggressive. I found that out the hard way when my male side fell head over heels in love with a transwoman about five years ago, who had been one of my American friends in Union School, Port-au-Prince, Haiti back in the late 1960s. I was taken by surprise, since females typically don't "fall in love" unless they are heavy on male traits. I'd never been in love before and had thought it was all a made up sentiment to sell merchandise. Suddenly, I was the one writing love songs, love poems, and walking on air, humming happily. Things ended badly when the transwoman friend acted like a true female and began ordering me around, telling me which jobs to take, where to live, and even what furniture she wanted me to have. I hadn't realized before that women typically make all the decisions in relationships, since I was the one who did it before. I might be partly transmale, but I have enough female in me that it didn't take long for me to exit stage left. It's usually safe for males to fall in love, as they are physically strong, and usually need besotted devotion to stick to one female long enough to help her progeny succeed. Male-trait females who fall in love, however, are putting themselves at risk, as they could act like males, making excuses for bad behavior, as many men do for their girlfriends, allowing their male mates to take advantage of them, and possibly even abuse them.
Best ever lover, did you have one?
birdingnut comments on Feb 3, 2018:
YES. My ex activated things in me I didn't realize were there. Years after our divorce the mystery was solved when he came out as a bi nonbinary female, and I realized four years ago that I'm partially transmale, although I live as an androgyne female. Neither of use were aware of gender issues while married, and believed we were a normal hetero couple. We both did gender-switching roles, costumes, mild S & M, fantasy games, and almost non-stop play as long as our relationship lasted. I used to think the straight male "rabbit" sex of my former partners was boring and stupid, but my ex opened up a new world for me.
At what point?
birdingnut comments on Feb 3, 2018:
To this point, my age has been irrelevant. I began a restricted diet in my 20s to save my life, and had to continue due to my immune system being trashed by extreme exposure to DDT in Haiti, thanks to the well-meaning SNEM program that sprayed our homes every year, killing our pets, and ants, which had previously kept bedbugs in check. When I began eating only natural, whole foods, and dropped processed food and most meat, my health and stamina skyrocketed..I stopped getting the flu, infections, etc. and my kids never even got the sniffles, and were completely calm, except on the rare occasions their Grandma slipped them junk food. So I continued to have high energy, be totally limber, and be very active. The Thai were mystified that I often chose to walk instead of using my motorbike, and when out on swamp access roads, people often try to give me lifts on their own motorbikes, thinking I need help. They usually only exercise in the evenings and early mornings, by walking around the block, swinging their arms, or doing group exercises to music in public places.

My theory is that Christianity doesn't change people at all, one way or the other, but jerks often use it as an excuse to be even worse, and good people continue to be good people as Christians, although others might give their beliefs the credit for it. People who tell stories about being "saved" and how they're now "changed" and "good" usually really mean that they now don't dance, go to movies, wear make up, or do some other silly religious thing that has nothing to do with anything.

According to the Sumerian texts found carved on the Babylonian wall, we were genetically engineered by aliens who needed gold mine workers. The texts were written 2000 years before the Bible, yet parallel the Bible stories, even with similar names of characters, except that their stories make more sense. Why was the Hebrew God so blood-thirsty and cruel? The parallel Sumerian texts say the leader of the "gods" was Anu, of the royal white Dracos, and they ate human flesh and drank blood, so required sacrifices from their human slaves. Why did the Noah's Ark flood happen? The Sumerian texts say that they knew a planet was going to come close enough to earth to break off an underwater ice shelf and flood a third of the planet, so Anu commanded his minions to withdraw a ways in their spaceships and let the slaves drown. But two of the gods, the ones who genetically engineered the humans, showed their favorite human how to build a submarine, and stored the animal DNA on it, since they'd also genetically engineered the domestic animals. Anu was angry with them, but allowed it. To me, that made more sense than the ridiculous idea that somehow animals from all over the globe managed to reach one place and all fit in a 150 ft long boat. Where have all the good men gone?
birdingnut comments on Feb 3, 2018:
Sadly, often men are single for a reason. According to John M. Gottman's famous study, successful long-term marriages have only one thing in common..husbands yield to their wives, and listen to them. Men who find themselves constantly single or in serial relationships could have more (independent) female traits, so are not willing to yield to a woman. See below: Gottman, John M., and Nan Silver. (1999). “Principle 4: Let Your Partner Influence You,” in The Seven Principles for Making Marriages Work (Chapter Six, 100-127). In Gottman’s long-term study of 130 newlywed couples, now in its eighth year, he found that, even in the first few months of marriage, men who allow their wives to influence them have happier marriages and are less likely to divorce than men who resist their wives’ influence. Statistically speaking, when a man is not willing to share power with his partner, there is an 81 percent chance that his marriage will self-destruct. Gottman has found that the happiest, most stable marriages in the long run were those where the husband treated his wife with respect and did not resist power sharing and decision making with her.

If you subscribe to "we create our own reality," then you must take responsibility for your life and outcomes. If you want something different, then think differently. If you just believe in free will, then you can only choose among the available choices presented, but you are otherwise helpless, if there are no options. If you think everything is "ordained by God" ahead of time, then you are off the hook! No responsibility! The Devil made me do it, so it must be "God's will"!

That is so sad..made me cry. But glad that in the end, he stopped suppressing his true self. Many women would see this as a best case scenario..she gets an intelligence, sensitive gay man as a bff, and has a great father for her children, but she can also marry a straight husband and he can have a male lover, and everybody is happy. They can share their families as much as they like. I like the cases where a gay couple uses a friend for a sperm donor, or to carry a baby for them, and afterward they stay in each others' lives somewhat, all playing with the kids and helping each other out. Or maybe that's just a straight person fantasy that gay movies and shows like to exploit.

I was born high IQ into a family of high IQ people, and had very high IQ kids. Most of us have dyslexia, mixed gender issues, some are on the autism spectrum, and often have many smart people problem cliches.. we don't always relate well to most normal people, but more because we tend to gravitate toward people like ourselves, we tend to look down on others, don't notice anything except our obsessions, only do things that interest us and ignore everything else, not interested in whether others approve of us or not. My son, with a 160 IQ, was terrifying, even while still in diapers. He thought his parents were absolute morons and we felt like morons around him. Trying to argue was useless. He would just march to the encyclopedias, yank one out, and point to where we were wrong on a date or location, or math concept. He somehow knew stuff I still don't know when he was still a baby.
Did you go to your senior prom/dance/formal?
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
I attended Jessamine CO high school my freshman year, Union School, school for diplomat's children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for my high school sophomore year, correspondence courses for junior year, then went to college at 17 years old, in 1970. I was allowed to join my Union School classmates for their graduation ceremony (about 12 kids in all) but there was no dance. I did attend a sort of "prom" banquet put on by missionaries, where I wore a satin formal and had a date, but no dancing. It was frowned on by religious folk at that time. I married another MK (missionary kid) who also had never danced, and had zero interest in it. After our divorce in 1995 I began clogging, ballroom and jitterbug dancing and never looked back..had a ton of fun and people would clear the floor and clap for us (whatever dance partner I had at the time). We did it all..lifts, wrap around the waist, slides across the floor through his legs, etc. fancy, athletic stuff into my late 50s. I miss that since I moved to Thailand in 2010, but I plan to move back to KY asap.
Not quite sure how this all works, but I'm here. Greetings my fellow heathens <3

All of the above is actually true. If your idea of a great life is snoozing in front of the TV eating Cheetos, trying to date me would not end well.

But we modern Americans are judging religious beliefs with our modern, rational, western ideas. Nobody does that to other world religions..who tries to find scientific evidence for Hindu beliefs? Or tries to prove Buddhist ideology? They are just traditions that give people something to worship, rules to follow that reassure people their after-death will be OK, etc. Similar, in a way, to some Americans thinking NFL players are really from their sponsoring cities, and prove some sort of superiority for their regions by "winning" a football game.

Are you going to be single for Valentine's Day?
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
I don't pay any attention to Valentine's Day now but as kids we all made each other cards and gave bags of candy. Here in Thailand, my students give me flowers, candy, and handmade, illustrated cards declaring their undying affection for me, etc. But when I was in romantic relationships, men always got me flowers, chocolate, and joined me in my favorite way to celebrate anything at all...a few hours of hiking/bird photography. Unless there was a big Valentine's Day ballroom/jitterbug dance going on in either Lexington, KY, or Huntington, WV, since I lived exactly inbetween those two cities. I would even design/sew new ballroom gowns for different party genres, like a backless plush red dress I wore for Valentine's Day dances.
Do you remember your dreams?
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
I don't remember dreams now, but I used to often remember them. I was born remembering past lives, but learned to never mention it. But one night I had a dream that was so vivid, set in Bible times, that it changed my life. It was a possible scenario from a past life, because it was as though I'd been born into that time, complete with memories of growing up there, knew all my relatives and friends in the village, had strict Jewish religious ideas, no knowledge of technology, and had a mindset like someone from that time. When I woke up I felt bewildered and disoriented, crying for my (imaginary?) Hebrew family for months. Last year I saw a movie set in Bible times and it upset me so much I could hardly watch it for overwhelming homesickness.

It was fun to walk the strip at night, though..the lights and digitally controlled fountains are entertaining. Most people go there to gamble and see spectacular shows, or ogle women in pasties, but I only tossed occasional quarters into the ever-present slot machines just so I could tell my friends I was "gambling in Las Vegas."

Do any members here believe in reincarnation?
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
Yup! I was born remembering the time before I was conceived, and my sister also remembered a past life. I remember many past lives, and googled a few of the incidents I remembered, and found the details I remembered to be true. But I can't "prove" anything about it, and don't want to, or care. I only accessed past memories to find the origins of certain fears, for instance. For example, all my life I had an irrational fear of knowing how much money I had. If I had to check my bank account, for instance, my stress levels would get so high I'd almost have a panic attack, and I could feel myself believing that if anyone found out, I'd be killed. I wondered if that was from a past life, so I traced that back to when I was a 19 year old Jewish boy hiding with my family in the basement of a friend in Bulgaria during the 1940s. We were planning to escape on a boat at the river that night, but I made the mistake of sneaking into town to withdraw my hard-earned money from the bank first, and someone who knew I was a Jew, saw and reported me. That night as we were escaping to the river, we were ambushed and shot. I later googled the incident and found that even if we'd made it to the boat, our government had secretly sold us out to the Nazis, and all the escaping Jews were killed when they arrived. I used a mind healing technique I'd learned, and imagined the incident the way it should have happened..no war, no killing of Jews, we continued to live prosperous lives as usual. But after that, the fear of checking on my money was gone. There are many studies of very young children who remember past lives, where researchers verified the details, even taken the children to the families they remembered, where they identified family members and past friends, recalling incidents accurately.

When I was living in the US, and had to commute a lot, I always took a book, snacks, and water with me in the car. If stuck in traffic, I cut off the motor and started reading and eating, while listening to music on the radio, so was perfectly content. In eastern Kentucky, where I lived for 27 years, people in that area are mostly from there, and related to everyone else, so most people will wave at you on small rural roads, in case you're an unknown relative. Insulting someone is also insulting their vast clan, and they take it personally, so people err on the side of caution. Once, I was waiting for the school buses to exit the school parking lot where I'd been substitute teaching, so I could leave the teacher's parking lot, and pulled out my book to read. After a while I looked up, and the buses weren't in sight. There was a long line of teacher cars waiting patiently behind me, but not ONE had honked a horn or acted impatient.
Spiritual
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
Spiritual means that someone might not believe in god or religion but they do believe in Einstein..that matter is energy in another form, that energy can't be destroyed or created, so we have always existed and will always exist in some energy form. They can believe in many things without being religious..past lives (I remember many of them, as does my sister), that our minds are the ones creating reality, etc. "For us believing physicists, the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." -Einstein “I regard consciousness as fundamental, and matter as derivative from consciousness." – Max Planck, theoretical physicist who originated quantum theory, 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics
What's your worst restaurant experience?
birdingnut comments on Feb 2, 2018:
I was eating with my boyfriend and other high school friends at the Rond Pointe restaurant in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, when I was 15 years old, after the big Germany vs Haiti soccer match at the main stadium. The restaurant is on a raised foundation, with wide steps to the front door, as most business establishments in Haiti are, for good reason. We barely noticed it had started raining lightly, but Haiti doesn't have infrastructure, like drains, gutters, etc., and suddenly, we noticed the waiters sweeping water back from the door. Someone jumped up to look outside, then yelled that our car-my boyfriend's Citroën deux chevaux, was floating away! We rolled up our pants and went out to grab the car, then we all pushed it up the rushing river/road to the Union School parking lot, where we left it, and took a tap-tap (converted pickup truck bus) home, since they could drive even with their headlights under water. One of the younger boys kept jeering that we were all going to get elephantiasis from the dirty water, but we didn't.
I am feeling very frustrated right now.

Tell me, what is the successful recipe for a successful marriage?
birdingnut comments on Feb 1, 2018:
Marriage researcher, psychologist John Gottman, and his colleagues followed 130 newlywed couples for six years to find what marriages succeeded, and why. Turns out, happy, stable marriages had one thing in common: The husband was willing to accept his wife's influence. In contrast, when husbands responded to their wives' complaints by stonewalling or belittling them, the marriage was almost sure to fail: More than four-fifths of those relationships — 81 percent — fell apart. It surprises me that US people consider such events unusual. I suppose it's from the rational mind only stuff taught in schools. Of course, we are made of energy, and energy can neither be created nor destroyed, so we have always existed in some form and will always exist. Many people, including me, and my sister even remember multiple past lives. (I googled details of a couple of incidents from the past and what I'd remembered was accurate). Anyway, I was born with psychic powers, but so were my mom and sister, and my kids, later on, so it just seemed normal. When I was in college, my favorite aunt visited me in my dorm room after she died, and I cried for days. In 2008, I was on a business trip with my then-husband when I had a vision of my mom having a heart attack and dying. I could see/feel she was experiencing..her last thoughts were of profound sadness and regret from disappointing me (I'd been persuading her to delay her death from heart disease for years, telling her that she didn't want to die now and make my dad sad before Christmas, etc. ). I was so traumatized I began sobbing and telling my husband we needed to go home right NOW, that my mom had just died. He protested that we'd driven all day and had a business appointment the next morning. But the next morning, I got a call that my mom had a heart attack and died in the night. I had the same type of vision when my dad died. He appeared to me while I was talking to my husband, except my dad looked about 14 years old, was cute and shy, and we chatted awhile about our lives, stuff we remembered. I could feel his overwhelming love and pride, something he'd had trouble showing when he was alive. I told my husband to look at the clock..that my dad had just died. Sure enough, within a few hours we got the call. This also happened the night my sister-in-law died..I was hit with a horrific feeling of someone I loved suffocating to death and I thought I was having a panic attack. But I knew someone in our family had died. Sure enough, her cancer had returned after a remission, and her lungs flooded in the night. I thought I only would have those types visions with close family, but it happened with King Bhumibol Adulyadej at his death on Oct. 13, 2016. I moved to Thailand in 2010, partly because of my admiration for the Thai king, who was an inventor, innovator, musician, builder, who transformed Thailand from backward state dependent on growing opium, to a prosperous rice economy. I was at the big EGV movie complex at the Songkhla Tesco-Lotus mall, in Songkhla, Thailand, on Oct. 13, and just before the movie started I looked over and "saw" clearly the Thai king standing in his palace talking with several monks in saffron robes, and realized he'd just died. ...

birdingnut comments on Feb 1, 2018:
See, all this trouble comes of the western practice of monogamous marriage. In Thailand, Haiti, and other places I've lived, marriage is more a legal contract for more upper class people for purposes of inheritance, etc. Most of them get married for children, but both spouses take side lovers, often of either or both genders, since many are bisexual. In the US, many liberal and/or LGBTQ couples have open relationships, and those often seem to be the healthiest.

On dating profiles, it's best to be up front about the kind of person you want to meet. The last time I put up a profile, I stated clearly that I "don't do casual sex," which should have eliminated most men, and my detailed list of things I wanted in a partner was supposed to drive the rest away, but, surprisingly, men who met those qualifications immediately applied anyway. Girls are more picky than men, but you could state your beliefs on your profile, letting girls who share your values know you're out there.

Although I'd stopped attending church years earlier, I lost the rest of my traditional Christian faith about 2010, I moved to Thailand soon afterward, and have had peace and quiet since about religion, since Thai Buddhism accepts everyone. I'm still mulling over and deciding what I do believe, though, and haven't commented to my relatives about it, although I strongly objected to the alt-right Facebook hate memes of my childhood Haiti missionary kid (MK) friends. This made me a target, in turn, from religious fanatics on an MK Facebook page I used to visit regularly. But I defriended the people posting hate memes, and curtailed visits to the MK Facebook page. I'm planning return to the US soon, where my relatives are nominally religious, but United Methodist, and mostly liberal in their outlooks, especially on my mother's (aristocratic) side of the family.

birdingnut comments on Feb 1, 2018:
It's just in the US people are weird about seeing UFOs since the US government has been routinely denying all sightings, deleting UFO photos from the internet, and mocking people who report them, even if they have clear videos. In other countries, it's not that way, but people don't care when they see them. We saw them so often in Haiti, we'd go on the flat rooftop and lie on the warm water barrels and watch the UFO show in the sky each night. We saw them changing colors, landing and taking off, blocking the roads sometimes at night, zipping around, changing directions, etc. In the US, we saw them also. My entire family and everyone at a Bible camp in Normal, Illinois watched one across a field at night. The locals said it happened all the time around there. Later, when I was married, one followed our car for 300 miles during a trip from KY to FL, sometimes coming so close it stalled the car engine. It acted like a friendly dog, hovering around us, then zipping off when we passed a housing division to weave around the houses, shining spotlights in the window, although nobody seemed to notice them. It had changing colored lights running around the rim of the saucer-reminded me of courting squid- or sometimes the entire disc would glow with one color, or get as bright as a small sun, lighting the neighborhood. Or just went dark, then suddenly would light up again. It left us when we passed a big military base in GA. It hovered high over the base, then seemed to turn slightly sideways, and shrank away as though going away from us very fast.

I used to use marriage as a reverse weapon..to scare off men. I always said in my profile that I don't do "casual sex," to get rid of the players, and also because I don't feel lust, so don't care about sex anyway, unless I've been in a relationship over a year (demisexual). I backfired, though, as I kept getting marriage proposals, so I'd sometimes have sex with someone in hopes that after he got what he wanted, he'd go away. I had no boundaries, being about 60% wired male, mentally, so didn't have the heart to break up with a "good friend," which is how I see males...as peers. I usually just wanted a good dance partner, or hiking/birding side kick.

Depending on the kid, and your partner, if any, you could try giving the kids more adult responsibility. If you treat them as though they are intelligent and competent, people often rise to the occasion. Also, being willing to listen to them and play with them, doing things they enjoy sometimes. Depends, though. I found that bait, not punishment is what works with older kids especially, but all kids, really. I would give them special privileges if they did their chores without being reminded, gave a certain amount of cash for high grades, or just promise permission for them to go somewhere special if they achieve all A's, for instance. etc. Sometimes even the smallest excuse to succeed will work. That works for adults, also.

As a male, you're expected to make the first move. In fact, bold confidence is what women usually look for in their admirers. Women are typically the ones who look over their suitor choices and pick the best one for them, but men have to put themselves out there first. Also, most women aren't driven by male-strength libidos, so often want friendship first, to make sure male admirers aren't just trying to get laid with whatever woman he can get. She wants to feel special, chosen, etc.

What is the best way to broach Atheism in a religious conversation?
birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Dunno. The only thing I know to do is to smile and nod, but not encourage them, when people talk about their religion, but change the subject when I can. If I'm directly questioned, I just say something vague like I don't believe that way anymore, or that "not everyone believes that way," and hope the people get the hint and drop it. If they don't, I suddenly remember stuff I need to do somewhere else, and leave. But at least they now know your beliefs don't match theirs. But if you really want to directly confront your family with your beliefs, good luck with that.

I've done day and overnight hikes on the Appalachian Trail, near Gatlinburg, TN. My backpack was half my weight, my hiking boots blistered my feet, the backpack dug into my bones, the weight of the backpack made my knees buckle. I was so annoyed I went home and invented a device that gives me the four-footed advantage. I can lope like a wolf at a jogging pace for hours on steep, stony trails, even with a heavy backpack, with little effort. But as for a life of adventure, I've always lived one of those. I grew up in Haiti, I've lived all over the US, I taught in Hermosillo, Mexico, for a semester in 2001, have been teaching in Thailand since 2010, for the great bird photography. When I lived at my family farm near Morehead, KY, I camped outside in a screen tent year around, to keep track of meteor showers and night birds. A pet black jaguar kitten that apparently grew too large and dangerous and was turned loose, used to hang around on my large, wooded, hill farm. Later, he grew old enough to maintain a territory so only was around for several days at a time every few weeks or so. It would come around where the tent was, out by the horse pasture, purring so loudly he shook the tent, leaving his giant tracks everywhere, scat, and scrapes on the trees. I miss him now. I also rode and drove horses year around, no matter the weather. In winter, we'd use the horses for skijoring, etc. I'm an extreme birder..I actually move to countries to take photos, and here in Thailand I climb cliffs, wade swamps, hike through jungles to photograph hornbills, snakes, and wild elephants, and have seen many fantastic things and had many adventures! My "car" here in Thailand has been my motorbike. But I'm now 65 yrs old, so can't teach in Thailand now, according to new Thai foreign teacher laws.
Atheists are brave individuals by definition.
birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
Yeah..I miss being a believer, and trusting in a strong, wise being to take care of me. Also, churches gave me built-in community, friends, people to help me if I needed to move, Sunday School classes that did activities together..ski trips for the kids in their youth groups, church potlucks, softball games, plays, special music..it was a sort of civilization of its own. All I had to do was to "plug in." But that only worked when I was exactly like them..when I got divorced I suddenly found myself on the outside looking in, and decided I didn't need to attend church after all. Turned out, I never missed it, but I still wish I could just cruise along passively in life, believing "God" had a plan for me and was working everything out for me. Taking responsibility for my own choices and outcomes is more difficult.
Anyone Have An Exotic Animal As A Pet?
birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I had piles of exotic pets from growing up in Haiti, as well as regular pets, and was rehabbing birds and wild animals since I was seven. Normal pets in Haiti-guinea pigs, a goat, horses, cats, dogs, chickens, ducks, and guinea fowl. Wild pets in Haiti: Limpkin chick, White-necked Crow babies, Hispaniola parrots, boas. The US: I had piles of regular pets like horses, a mule, dogs, a cat, and bred exotic birds-mostly parrots- for several years, hand raising the babies of many of them. My daughter kept a fat white African frog for years. We even farmed earthworms in the winter to feed him. There were various local snake species (rough green snakes, eastern king snakes, hognosed snakes, eastern banded water snakes, garter snakes) in eastern Kentucky that we'd rehab if injured, or that I'd pick up while hiking in the woods, and we'd keep for a couple of months, then release them where I'd caught them, well before hibernation time. We did keep one Eastern King Snake for a couple of years, letting him hibernate in a bag in the fridge in the winter. My son took the snake everywhere with him, even to church, which I allowed as long as he kept "Kingy" in his little velvet drawstring bag. Even back then, I thought church was boring, and sympathized with my kids. The kids had to be careful not to hold any of their other snakes to close to Kingy, while they were watching TV, or he'd grab the other snakes and start to swallow them. Here in Thailand I had an Asian Fairy-bluebird who thought I was his mate and flew behind me around the house. He sang to me, nibbled on my fingers, watched movies with me, laughing and shrieking at car chase, and crash scenes. Right now, all I have for "pets" are House Geckos that run around the walls, munch on my bean sprouts, and leave very sticky droppings (Eeew!).

birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
No age. I'm on the asexual spectrum, as a demisexual..meaning that I can only feel lust for someone I've been with for more than a year. And then, only for that one person. My ex used to send me naughty, X-rated e-cards, and I was surprised that I didn't enjoy seeing photos of hetero sex. So he tried lesbian cards, but I still felt nothing. Finally, he sent me gay men e-cards, and finally I responded, but only in a "Aw, how sweet!" sort of way..still no lust. I partially identify as male, so I suppose I subconsciously saw the gay cards as representing us, as a couple. However, I do think that both men and women are beautiful, like artwork, and love to look at athletic young people, as long as they keep their lower naughty bits covered.

Are atheists in general, more intelligent than religious people?
birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I remember thinking things even most adults don't think about..before I could even talk well. My mom would tell me something religious..like to never put anything on the Bible, as that's wrong, and I'd see the hesitation in her eyes, and think to myself that she was just saying that because she'd been taught it, but wasn't sure, herself. I read the Bible for myself since I was five, even taking it under the covers, with my flashlight, at night. I remembered the Jesus character from my past life memories, and my sister also remembered a past life. I was excited to find him in the Bible, since I missed him. I have no idea if my memories were real, but I could clearly "see" Jesus in my mind, and later on, when I saw paintings done by autistic kids who claimed to have had visions of Jesus, I recognized him, although the other so-called pictures of Jesus were "wrong." Once I quit believing in the church, I also ditched belief in everything else, but have no explanation for my clear past life memories, or multiple lives. I even looked up the details of some of the more recent ones, and the details I remembered about the incidents were accurate. So now I'm someone who has suspended some disbelief but still rejects Christianity in general.
Noise pollution
birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
I get it. I used to play base and keyboard in rock bands, and lost most of my hearing. When I was reduced to reading lips, I decided I wanted to hear again. That was in the 1990s, I think. Soon after deciding that, I was coming down the mountain when I heard a loud thudding sound behind me..sounded like footsteps on the pathway. I was terrified, whipped around..but nobody was there. I could also hear this loud rushing sound, like water in a pump. I finally realized I was hearing my heart beat and the blood rushing in my veins. I tried to block the sound, and when I reached the house, and my kids started to talk to me, I covered my ears and told them to stop shouting. I then turned down the TV to a noise level I could tolerate. Then I noticed they were all staring at me. Finally, my daughter said that now they couldn't hear the TV at all. I had to wear ear plugs for years, and still do, even here in Thailand, when I'm riding public transportation, to block the engine noise. But when I lived on our Morehead farm, even when I was out roaming the wooded hills, I was tormented by the roar of passing trucks on the interstate, three miles away! I could hear everything..like a wall of noise, even at night. That's one BIG plus about living in Songkhla, Thailand..blessed peace.

birdingnut comments on Jan 31, 2018:
No pets at the moment, but had plenty all my life otherwise. I grew up in Haiti and rode my little Haitian mustang stallion, Lightning, constantly. I treated him as a person, as did everyone else, apparently. Once, someone came to tell me that our mission Bible school's (outdoor, roof-only, raised cement foundation) cafeteria was selling homemade ice cream. I was riding Lightning at the time (without a saddle or bridle, as usual), so rode straight over there, and up the steep steps onto the cafeteria floor, slid off and started pushing to the front of the crowd to buy a cup of ice cream. I noticed Lightning's pricked ears nearby..he was also politely pushing through the crowd to the front of the counter, where someone bought him his own cup of ice cream. When I returned to eat at the long wooden picnic tables with my Haitian friends, someone dumped Lightning's ice cream on the table, where he joined us, delicately licking his off the table top. Nobody objected, or seemed to notice, or care, that one of the crowd of friends at the table was a horse, LOL! When we were done, I slipped up on his back again, we rode down the steps and took off again.

Luckily, in elementary school this wasn't an issue since boys typically sent their friends to ask my friends if I liked them or not. Were you the popular type in high school or more the keep to yourself type?
birdingnut comments on Jan 30, 2018:
I grew up on a mission in Haiti, returning to the US every five years for one year. Our mission school was tiny..one or two kids per grade, and we did the CA Calvert Correspondence course. We started school in Oct. and were done before Easter, only went to school for half a day, no homework, but had usually completed our course work by Christmas, so the missionaries, who had to have college degrees to be on that mission, would take turns teaching us their college courses. To their annoyance, we learned masters courses as quickly as anything else. I didn't believe the courses were really college level until I started attending Asbury College and found I'd done the identical work, written papers on the same subjects while in middle school in Haiti. I didn't have to study for two years, since I'd already studied it all! I did study anyway, though..couldn't stop reading all the books in the school library since books were precious in Haiti. When I was fifteen, I attended Jessamine County high school in eastern KY, and was shocked at how silly it all was. The teachers liked to blather on about nothing, when everything we needed to know was already in the text books, insisting on keeping us all captive and boring us, then assigning us homework as we were leaving! I thought they were all stupid. Eventually, I gave up trying to learn anything and joined my fellow classmates in pinging people with a pea shooter when the teacher turned her back. Well, at least, I fought back, if hit by a paper wad.
Are the Millenials right and we judge them too harshly?

I'm proud of them, actually. Link: 20% of millennials identify as LGBTQ, according to new GLAAD study https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/20-percent-millennials-lgbtq-glaad-study_us_58dd140be4b05eae031d8f9c?ncid=engmodushpmg00000004
