I really like good English. I would read Joseph Conrad books even if they had no story. I'm Irish so I'm raised on lots of travesties of the English language. Many of them are very funny. I think it mostly has to do with lower income people getting a very bad education. I read enough to know how language aspires to express complex ideas and inspires through communication. I think it's criminal that poor people can be robbed of a share in this level of consciousness. Using 'axe' instead of 'ask' sounds bad but not being able to 'axe' the right questions is worse.

We must be careful not to make the same mistakes as the religious groups. We have the same tendency to make doctrines and glorify people. We also shouldn't become smug or self-satisfied and feel contempt for the non-believers. It is good to see atheist groups becoming charity conscious. I guess they can be fairly accused of not wanting the religious organisations to have a monopoly on virtue but it is a fine thing to see and I doubt competing with religion is not the only reason. Some religious groups find little reason to take an interest in ecology because they believe the earth is meant to be destroyed by human greed and then saved by Christ. The atheist community can highlight the problems and communicate ways to improve the earth's condition.

John Vervaeke on the necessary merger of science and religion: [youtube.com]
brentan comments on Dec 5, 2019:
There is an opinion out there that we have been on the road to nihilism ever since the Greeks started philosophising. That opinion stretches to say we are now suffering the worst of the negativity involved in rationality and materialism. That’s where our new batch of intellectuals on the Internet come in. My feeling about the different approaches used by these guys is that while Peterson tracks the human imagination through the centuries, Vervaeke breaks down out thought processes into the nuts and bolts of thinking. I’ve watched 46 lectures in the series so far and my conclusion is that proper thinking is how to awaken from the meaning crisis and John covers the huge amount of ground where wrong paths can be taken. I really like his talks with religious thinkers on the Internet – Jonathan Pageau, Mary Kochan and Sevilla King, even if Sevilla is really focused on Pirsig’s take on Eastern philosophy. So will proper thinking solve the problem and give back meaning in our lives? Or will we be forced to consider a return to spiritual thinking and the community of religion? Time will tell but I feel very strongly that our left-hemisphere ways of thinking have led us into a blind alley and we desperately need a way out.

Even as a youngster, I always wanted to stay clean down there. In a family of six boys, it seemed very odd indeed that anyone might ask for anything more than toilet tissue. But I never felt ‘right’ without more protection. When in my late teens, I finally got my mother to consider purchasing serious hygienic products for me. I liked the security of the pad but the tampon had a little ‘je ne sais pas’ that felt good inside. When I went to college and met more people outside the family circle, I discovered that pads and tampons were for women and my need for inner cleanliness called for different solutions. I still sometimes blush at my innocence but I must admit I miss the tampons.

That was good. I enjoyed the fairly recent spate of TV programs that linked autism to brilliance. Monk comes to mind. There was a movie with Claire Danes telling the story of an autistic women who studied cattle and set up new more humane ways of slaughtering them. It is really good to see the amount of videos available on the workings of the autistic mind and the value non-neurotypical people can add to society. This and the continued study of the brain and how it works will open up great understanding for anyone who wants to value the differences in people.

That’s a nice change from all these silly cartoons saying religious people are mad. I think that we developed the ability to create scenarios in our mind so as play out different eventualities in our minds. This means that we wouldn’t die from every bad idea we tried out. This ability to imagine has become more sophisticated through the progress of evolution and gradually was able to create the concept of intangibles like god, heaven etc. I got this idea from one of Jordan Peterson’s videos.

Some Christians have seriously lost their way. They don't understand their own scriptures anymore, such as 'my (Christ's) kingdom is no part of this world', 'be in the world but no part of it' and 'be in subjection to the secular authorities'. They have a gospel that frees them from political concerns and allows them to grow their own spirituality as they wait on their Messiah to return and bring in his new kingdom. I think this wish to do Christ's work for him would be called presumptuousness in the Bible.

Socrates thought that was everything. Jesus, who I don’t think was a real person, taught love was the meaning of life. Even if Jesus is fictional, it’s a fine way to think while we work out the details.
