It takes more than an Atheist to over throw over obiedience authority of Religion.
brentan comments on Dec 19, 2019:
I think the problem with that lies in the cyclical form of nature where we keep moving from liberalism to conservatism and back. We probably do that because we are incapable of getting the balance right so we keep correcting the mistakes of one system by a return to the mistakes of the other and on and on.

brentan comments on Dec 18, 2019:
One of the interesting features of the Bible is that it doesn't make its main characters out to be flawless heroes. They are very human and the stories around them show how they can pay for their mistakes. One example is Jacob who cheated his brother out of his inheritance and found out the pain suck trickery inflicted when it was done to him by his uncle. I'm not sure there is any prohibition on lieing in the Bible. The prohibition on bearing false witness seems to belong in a judicial setting.

brentan comments on Dec 17, 2019:
Here's a scriptural verse that covers a range of lifestyles judged deserving of eternal death: Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.…(1 Corinthians 6:9) There's more like that in the Bible but gays seem to be the perennial scapegoat in Christian land.

Genetic Behavior
brentan comments on Dec 15, 2019:
Here's a bit of info on DNA and genes: The DNA molecule has two important properties: It can make copies of itself. If you pull the two strands apart, each can be used to make the other one (and a new DNA molecule). It can carry information. The order of the bases along a strand is a code - a code for making proteins. Genes A gene is a length of DNA that codes for a specific protein. So, for example, one gene will code for the protein insulin, which is important role in helping your body to control the amount of sugar in your blood. Genes are the basic unit of genetics. Human beings have 20,000 to 25,000 genes. These genes account for only about 3 per cent of our DNA. The function of the remaining 97 per cent is still not clear, although scientists think it may have something to do with controlling the genes. So all we know for sure is DNA makes amino acids to make proteins. We have no idea if or how the different parts of the body from proteins or the other 97% of DNA. It's a belief.

I don't know what he meant. I was told when I was a JW that perfection means completeness and it seems to be true because I've heard from other sources too. I guess that meaning makes sense in the context of being a Christian. I'm not sure how to relate it to ordinary life.

Yes indeed. My old club - the JWs - hated third level education. It was accepted, as indeed it is in scripture, that 'not many wise ones' enter the religion: Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. I was reared a Roman Catholic so I can relate to the guilt instilled in us from childhood. So then I myself with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.  Now that's relief!

Why We Need to Lose Religion to Save America
brentan comments on Dec 11, 2019:
"To slow the decay, many right-wing political and religious leaders and their followers are demanding a “return” to the foundation of American virtue, which they believe to be the Bible and Christian doctrine." I can't help thinking the foundation of American virtue is a myth. Leaving that aside, American society is in a bad way. I see it as a crisis of meaning; meaning that used to keep some kind of lid on our worst excesses. The only alternative to religious values seems to be humanitarian but they seem to be just the province of educated upper middle class people.
